Chapter 54: My Wife Sent Me Away
After standing under cold water for half the night, the result was a high fever that would not go down.
Shen Chi lay half-dead on the bed. His hair was still wet, but he no longer had the strength to blow it dry. The fact that he had managed to change into clean clothes and crawl onto the bed already made him feel amazing.
The system was so anxious it spun in circles. Looking at his usually fair face now burning red, his lively eyes having lost all their energy and unable to open, and his breathing obstructed because of the illness so that he could only part his lips slightly, the system had never seen him like this before. It called out to him several times in a row, but unfortunately, there was no response.
[Shen Chi, don’t fall asleep!]
[If you sleep through this, the two of us are both finished!]
[If there’s really no other way, call an ambulance! Don’t feel sorry for the money at a time like this.]
[Shen Chi? Can you hear me?]
…
The nonstop nagging in his head made Shen Chi furrow his beautiful brows. Looking weak, he still could not help complaining, “You’re so noisy.”
The system was delighted. [Human, you’re alive again?!]
Shen Chi said, “What time is it?”
He struggled to open his eyes, but his gaze could not focus. The curtains had not been drawn, and sunlight seemed to be spilling in from outside, golden and bright. But he could not tell clearly and feared he was hallucinating.
The system hurriedly said, [Eight o’clock! Human, you were unconscious for two hours. You scared me to death.]
Shen Chi’s hand slid weakly around beside him a few times. At last, he found his phone. In his current condition, he probably could not go to work today. As a corporate slave, in order to keep his job, he still had to ask for leave in advance.
Originally, as Lu Chenzhou’s personal secretary, he could directly ask his boss for leave. But right now, he did not want to see Lu Chenzhou, much less hear his voice. He was afraid he would lose control of himself. That feeling of losing control was absolutely terrible. In the end, he chose to avoid him.
There were not many people in his contacts. Very soon, he found someone familiar—Secretary Xu.
Secretary Xu could be considered half his teacher. From the moment he started working, she had wholeheartedly guided him. But this high fever had exceeded his expectations. The instant the call connected, his vision went black. Before he could even speak, he fainted again.
On the other end of the phone, Secretary Xu said hello for a long while but received no response. Her first reaction was not that Secretary Shen had accidentally dialed the call, but that something had happened to him.
Holding her large pregnant belly, she rushed to the HR department in a flurry under Special Assistant Zhou’s puzzled gaze.
“Give me Secretary Shen’s home address! Hurry, right now!”
HR was curious while pulling up the file. “Eh? Secretary Xu, did something happen?”
Secretary Xu did not speak. After getting the address, she was about to leave, but just as she reached the door, she almost ran into Lu Chenzhou head-on.
He looked as if he had not slept all night. A few traces of exhaustion appeared on his usually handsome face. Only those eyes remained as sharp as ever.
Behind him, Special Assistant Zhou arrived late, panting from running. “President Lu, wait for me.”
After sending Shen Chi away last night, Lu Chenzhou had not only lost control because his wife did not like him, becoming irritated, but also felt a faint unease. Today, he had deliberately come to the company early. Normally, the staff in the secretary office always arrived before him, but today, unexpectedly, aside from a few assistants, all his secretaries were missing.
Secretary Xu’s absence could be overlooked, but the most important thing was that he did not see Shen Chi.
For one instant, he was even worried that Ji Yanzhi’s crow’s mouth had hit the mark and that Shen Chi was going to resign. Fortunately, Special Assistant Zhou timely said that Secretary Xu had run off in a hurry.
Lu Chenzhou immediately sensed that something was wrong. He called Shen Chi, but it would not go through. It was always engaged. In the end, when he saw the phone in Secretary Xu’s hand, his eyes darkened, and he directly snatched it.
“Secretary Xu, have the procurement department buy you a new phone. Now, you can return to your post.” After saying that, he took the phone and ran off.
In all her years of work, this was Secretary Xu’s first time seeing President Lu lose composure like this. But if he took the phone, at least give her SIM card back!
Special Assistant Zhou said, “Secretary Xu, don’t ask for it back. You won’t get it. Come on, let’s pick out the newest model, with more storage and a higher price. No need to save money for President Lu. Anyway, all he has left is money.”
Secretary Xu: …
—
The door to Shen Chi’s little shabby room was tightly locked. Lu Chenzhou knocked so hard it banged loudly, yet there was no movement inside.
Under his tense expression, Lu Chenzhou began to worry. “Shen Chi, if you don’t answer, I’m kicking the door down.”
After saying that, he did not wait even a second longer. He lifted his foot and kicked the door open.
The room was the same as last time, tidied very cleanly. Aside from that, there was also a faint fruit scent. For a moment, Lu Chenzhou could not distinguish it, nor was he in the mood to. Frowning, he quickly went to the bedroom, and then he saw Shen Chi curled up weakly into a small ball.
Lu Chenzhou could clearly see the bite marks on the back of his neck. After a night, the bite marks that should have almost recovered after he had applied ointment were now in a miserable state.
The skin that should have been fair was red and swollen. Along with the overlapping bite marks, it was a shocking sight.
Lu Chenzhou’s pupils suddenly shrank. The hostility around him vanished completely, replaced by endless regret and heartache. “Shen Chi?”
The moment his cool fingers touched him, the scorching body temperature immediately made his expression change.
Lu Chenzhou instantly pulled Shen Chi into his arms. “Shen Chi? You have a fever.”
He picked Shen Chi up and wanted to take him to the hospital, but Shen Chi, who had originally been unconscious, suddenly gained a thread of clarity because of his arrival.
Although he had stood under cold water for half the night, reducing the Alpha’s pheromones in his body to the lowest level, he had, after all, only been temporarily marked yesterday. Even if he resisted, instinct still existed.
The bitter scent of gunpowder appeared and slightly eased the pain after being marked. Beneath his thin eyelids, Shen Chi’s eyes moved.
“Shen Chi? Don’t be afraid. I’ll take you to the hospital right away.”
The moment he heard “hospital,” Secretary Shen, who had originally been obediently lying in his arms, suddenly began to struggle. His struggle was very weak. There was no need to use any force; one hand would be enough to suppress him. But Lu Chenzhou could not bear to do so. He let Shen Chi’s soft hand hit his face. In fact, in order to hear his murmurs clearly, he even leaned his face closer.
“…Not going… hospital.”
Lu Chenzhou had never coaxed anyone in his life. He could only carefully hold him and ask, “Why? Shen Chi, you’re sick.”
He tried to reason with him, but under the high fever, Shen Chi suddenly became fragile. His eyes grew moist, and clear tears suddenly slid down from the reddened corners of his eyes.
One tear.
Lu Chenzhou almost went mad.
“Okay, we won’t go to the hospital.” He surrendered instantly. “Don’t move around. I’ll have Ji Yanzhi come over.”
Even while burning with fever, Shen Chi still did not forget the out-of-control version of himself from yesterday. That extremely unfamiliar self made him reject Lu Chenzhou. When he vaguely realized that Lu Chenzhou was holding him, he began struggling again.
“You… go…”
Lu Chenzhou lowered his head and let him hit his face. After listening for a long while, he finally heard that one sentence.
He was telling him to get lost.
“You’re telling me to leave? Then who do you want to come?”
“That damned partner of yours?”
“She doesn’t even know you’re sick!”
He spoke angrily, his expression fierce, but by the time he roared to the end, he somehow felt wronged too.
“I’m not leaving.”
