Chapter 89
In the apocalypse, women often suffered more malice and persecution than men. The women in question had taken Rose Hotel inside Sunlight World Amusement Park as their base. They had gathered most of the supplies from the amusement park, Dehui Mall, and several of the largest nearby gas stations. Their base only accepted women, while children of either sex were allowed in. Boys, however, would be expelled from Rose Garden Base once they came of age. Many of the women there were young, while others were pitiful women abandoned by their husbands or other family members.
Chen Fangshun said evenly, “When my wife died, my son escaped from that gas station group on his own and was rescued by the women of Rose Garden. But later, he and the other children were taken away by the disciples of the Doomsday Saints. I brought my son’s photo to Sunlight World Amusement Park, and that was when they told me what had happened. So I came to the church as their undercover man, and I did my best to protect the imprisoned children too.”
Wei Cheng suddenly recalled what Lin Xiangfeng and the others had said before: there was a child in the basement who called the man delivering food “Dad” and kept asking him when they could go home to find Mom…
So those two people were Chen Fangshun and his son.
Wei Cheng studied him in silence. “If they’re so capable, why would they cooperate with a little farm like ours?”
“They don’t have many guns or bullets, but the number of members they’ve taken in keeps growing. The fewer guns they have, the less they can guarantee everyone’s safety.” Chen Fangshun said, “Highland Shelter and the Canning Factory both covet Rose Garden’s abundant supplies and fuel, so they constantly ask for outrageous prices, forcing those women to trade huge amounts of supplies for very little ammunition and very few guns. And I also know your farm’s resources are no worse than any other base’s. You just have too few people, and your overall strength is weaker.”
Wei Cheng asked again, “As far as I know, Sunlight World Amusement Park and the church are very far apart. How do you communicate?”
“Rose Garden has a team staying at a roadside motel thirty kilometers from the church, waiting for a chance to save people,” Chen Fangshun said. “Most of them are the mothers or sisters of those children. When I search for the Son of God, I make contact with them.”
Then he added, “You saved me twice. I, Chen Fangshun, repay kindness. I won’t betray you.”
Wei Cheng fell into brief thought.
There were too many wounded on the farm. This time, the Doomsday Saints would definitely send even more people to attack.
With the manpower they currently had, they truly were not their match.
But could Chen Fangshun and those women really be trusted?
He had already confirmed that the ones who had slashed their tires at Sunlight World Amusement Park and then helped them out were people from Rose Garden.
Their actions had been so inconsistent. Could they really be trusted and worked with?
Wei Cheng spoke with practiced calm, using a light tone to shift the weight of the conversation. “The reason our farm has survived until now definitely isn’t because of just a few guns and some ammunition. Even if we’re weaker right now, heavy weaponry speaks for itself. No matter how many Doomsday Saints come, we can wipe them out. It’s only a matter of how long it takes. But if they want to rely on our weapons to save people, then let us see sincerity and value first.”
Chen Fangshun stared at him. This was the second time he had heard the words “value” from this child.
A child like this was born calm, and also born cold.
His lips twitched. “What do you want them to do?”
When Chen Fangshun returned to the church, an old man with graying hair glanced at him. “Where’s Xiao Ma?”
Chen Fangshun said indifferently, “He was bitten by a zombie. I killed him.”
The old man’s face showed no emotion. He traced a cross over his chest. “He has gone ahead to serve our Lord.”
Chen Fangshun’s mouth twitched. He thought to himself that his son was dead, and yet this man was still this crazed.
A bunch of lunatics indeed.
He passed a flower bed and arrived at the kitchen. Inside, several middle-aged women were skinning sheep with numb expressions and chopping sheep heads.
“I’m here to get the goat milk for the children.”
One of the women glanced at him blandly and handed him a crate of bottled goat milk.
Carrying the crate, Chen Fangshun headed to an underground room beneath the open ground behind the church. The glass bottles clinked together crisply.
Two green-eyed men in black robes stood guard at the basement entrance.
Feeling his way down the stairs in the dark, he heard the faint breathing of children inside.
These children had not seen sunlight in months. They stayed in this damp basement every day, and they were already close to failing.
“Dad…” A frail little hand rested on Chen Fangshun’s shoe.
“Xiaoming.” Chen Fangshun handed a warm bottle of goat milk to Chen Xiaoming. “Drink it. It tastes good.”
“Dad, when can I see Mom?”
Chen Xiaoming had gone dull in the head.
Now he only knew how to say that one sentence.
A few more children woke up, shuffling over like little mice. “Uncle, when will our moms come save us?”
“Uncle, when is my dad coming?”
—
Wei Cheng ran quickly up the mountain with Guanguan in tow, the two dogs racing after them.
Suddenly, he heard the staggering footsteps of a zombie near his ear.
He shot an arrow from his hand crossbow straight into its forehead, and the zombie dropped lightly to the ground.
Only after they had run into the mountain and confirmed there was nothing strange around them did the Twisty Car appear again.
Wei Cheng pressed the start button and said anxiously, “We have to get back to the farm quickly.”
There were only six people left on the farm, at most. Ying Hui and the others were average shots, and Aunt Su Min still had to look after Uncle Dali. Uncle Shen and Uncle Yi alone simply could not handle it all.
“Brother, Yang Guizhi caught lots of little children!” Guanguan held his little Ultraman toddler gun, nodding sleepily. “Guanguan… Guanguan’s gonna shoot her!”
Yang Guizhi?
Foreign devil. When had this kid overheard adult conversation again?
Wei Cheng adjusted the child’s mask and gently rubbed his head. “Go to sleep.”
Guanguan’s eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and finally his little neck drooped as he fell asleep.
But even then, his hand still tightly gripped the pistol with the safety on.
Wei Cheng had to work at it for a while before he could pry it free, thinking that this little fat kid really had quite the grip.
A normal car would take five or six hours to get from the church back to Wushan. Guanguan’s little car only needed four. No matter what, they would reach the farm before the Doomsday Saints and would have time to prepare an ambush.
As time passed, Wei Cheng counted the bullets and weapons in storage.
Browning heavy machine gun: 1
Scorpion pistols: 10
AK-47 rifles: 10
Standard sniper rifle: 1
Silenced sniper rifle: 1
Flamethrowers: 2
There were 1,000 boxes of 9mm ammunition left, and 300 boxes of 7.62mm sniper ammunition.
A single 9mm round cost 1.5 yuan. One box held 100 rounds. After a moment’s thought, he bought 2,000 more boxes, spending 300 coins.
The heavy machine gun ammunition was also running low. This type was 12.7×99mm; a single bullet cost about 50 yuan, and one box held 100 rounds. Since his twist coins were limited, he only bought 200 boxes, spending 1,000 coins.
One twist coin equaled 1,000 yuan…
Wei Cheng moved swiftly over the control panel, gritting his teeth as he bought a second heavy machine gun from the firearms section.
One heavy machine gun cost 15,000 coins. The bullets cost another 1,300. Their twist coin balance instantly dropped from 22,830 to 6,530, but their safe house stockpile rose from 668 to 1,075.
That was a huge step closer to upgrading the intermediate form to 2,000.
At least when this mission was done, there would be a reward and more coins. No matter how he looked at it, they weren’t losing out.
Yi Qi and Shen Zheng had never expected Wei Cheng to come back so soon. They had assumed Chengcheng would take Guanguan into the safe house to rest for the night before returning.
The opening in the wall was pushed open, and Yi Qi took the heavy little watermelon child into his arms. “Asleep.”
“Yeah, he fell asleep in the car.” Wei Cheng looked at them. “The Doomsday Saints will be here in an hour. We have to get ready right now.”
Shen Zheng couldn’t help raising his voice. “What?”
“The one who led Lin Xiangfeng and the others to the farm was Chen Fangshun.” Wei Cheng gave them the short version, quickly explaining what had happened.
Then he said, “I’m taking Guanguan into the safe house first. Uncle Shen, come with me. Uncle Yi, gather everyone who isn’t injured and bring them to Uncle Shen’s cabin.”
When he arrived at Director Wang’s cabin, he saw that Mingming, Xiaotiao, and Xiaoyue were all awake, their little faces full of anxiety, though each of them was holding either a crossbow or a pistol.
By now, all of those children knew how to use guns and bows to some degree.
Su Min was there too, gritting her teeth. “These foreigners have gone too far!”
“Aunt Su Min, go back and look after Uncle Dali,” Director Wang said with a sigh.
Su Min shook her head, her phoenix eyes red. “When the nest is overturned, no egg survives. If the farm is gone, how can Dali recover in peace?”
Ge Fei and Xiao Zhu exchanged a glance, and Xiao Zhu spoke hesitantly. “Brother Yi, Brother Shen, we…”
Shen Zheng frowned. “What? Are you feeling sick?”
Xiao Zhu lowered his head and shook it.
Ge Fei spoke up. “If we already know those people are coming to attack the farm, then shouldn’t we run? Why are we staying here to defend it?”
Ying Hui was incredulous. “Are you crazy? The farm is our home. How can you just abandon it?”
“But you know full well we’re no match for those foreigners!” Ge Fei burst out. “They have more people than us, and no fewer weapons. Right now, we’re a bunch of old people, weak people, sick people, and wounded people. Other than running, what else can we do? Stay here and wait to die?”
Yi Qi’s face turned ugly. “We can’t leave now. Dali is unconscious and feverish, and Xiangfeng, Zhaobin, and Xiao Li are all running fevers too. If they get moved, their wounds are likely to split open and bleed badly.”
Xiao Zhu’s lips trembled, his gaze drifting. “The injured can’t go, sure… but can’t the healthy ones leave? Do we all have to stay behind and die together before it counts as loyalty?”
Ying Hui was furious. “What kind of nonsense is that? Yesterday, I could understand you freezing up and not charging in. But Uncle Dali and Xiangfeng and the others got hurt trying to protect the farm. If we run now, are we just leaving them here to die?”
“Then if we stay, won’t we die too?” Ge Fei shouted back, his eyes red. “Xiao Zhu and I aren’t good shots. If we charge forward, it’s suicide! Xiangfeng and Zhaobin did charge forward, and what happened? Fever, unconsciousness—maybe crippled for life!”
The cabin fell silent.
Wei Cheng, who had remained quiet the whole time, finally swept his gaze across them all and said, “Everyone has the right to choose. Whether you chose to stay when things were easy, or choose to leave now that danger has come, I can understand either.”
Because human nature always sought gain and avoided harm.
No one should ever imagine they could see through a person at one glance.
Ge Fei shut his eyes. “I’m sorry. I want to live. I want to leave.”
Xiao Zhu lowered his head and cried. “I… I want to leave too.”
Ying Hui was so angry he jerked his head sharply aside.
Wei Cheng said, “Anyone else wants to leave?”
No one answered.
“Uncle Yi, give them two pistols and fifty rounds each. Pack some canned food and instant noodles for them too. See them out of the farm.”
Ge Fei and Xiao Zhu jerked their heads up. They had never expected they would still be given guns and food…
Wei Cheng looked straight into their eyes. “Once you leave, you can never come back. Go.”
Yi Qi led the two boys out of the cabin, both of them hanging their heads.
“Our numbers are even smaller now…” Ying Hui rubbed his buzz cut. “What do we do?”
Shen Zheng clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Having fewer people doesn’t mean we can’t win.”
He already knew about the second heavy machine gun in Chengcheng’s possession, but he and Yi Qi had agreed that the weapon situation should be explained by them.
He looked at Chengcheng, then spread a rough sketch of the farm out on the table. “Actually, the farm has two heavy machine guns.”
The moment those words were spoken, Aunt Su Min, Ying Hui, and the others all looked startled.
One heavy machine gun alone was already incredibly rare. There were two? In that case, maybe they really did have a chance.
“Su Min, in a moment go get ammunition from Yi Qi. The heavy machine gun on the watchtower will be yours.”
Su Min nodded. “Alright.”
“The other heavy machine gun will be hidden over by the outer wall, and Yi Qi will man that one.” Shen Zheng tapped the sketch. “Director Wang, you’ll carry the flamethrower and stay in ambush here. Chengcheng will set up the sniper rifle at this position by the core zone. They almost broke into the core zone yesterday. Ying Hui, you’re coming with me. Everyone needs to bring their walkie-talkies.”
“Understood!”
Shen Zheng’s sleeve was tugged. When he looked down, he met Mingming’s bright, clear eyes.
Mingming signed: Uncle Shen, you said my shooting had gotten pretty good. I can go with you too!
Shen Zheng paused and glanced at Wei Cheng, then at Director Wang.
Director Wang thought for a moment. “If Mingming wants to go, then let him go.”
Mingming lit up at once: I definitely won’t hold the uncles and Chengcheng back!
Wang Xiaotiao clearly wanted to go too, but the child was still too jumpy and not steady enough. He would have to wait until he was older.
The children were left behind inside the core zone. Everyone else wore grim expressions and ran quickly to their assigned positions.
Gray Cub was shut inside the safe house. The black dog remained by his brother’s side.
Wei Cheng adjusted the sniper rifle, meticulously calibrating the scope.
Time ticked by. The farm lay in darkness. All he could hear was his own heartbeat and breathing.
Then Aunt Su Min’s calm voice came through: “They’re here.”
A sniper rifle was mounted on the wall of the core zone, and on the map in Wei Cheng’s sight appeared a dense cluster of little red dots.
“How many?”
Su Min answered, “Around sixty.”
Exactly the same number shown on the map.
Wei Cheng said, “I estimate the front and side of the farm have the largest numbers. Uncle Yi and Uncle Shen will cover the front. Grandfather, take Mingming and use fire at the pit traps by the wall. Aunt Su Min and Brother Ying Hui will handle the rear.”
“Received!”
The people hidden in different places responded at once.
Wei Cheng’s eyes remained locked on the rapidly approaching red dots. Together with Su Min on the watchtower, he gave the command at the exact same time:
“Open fire!”
The instant those dots crossed into the two-hundred-meter range of the farm’s steel wall, the heavy machine gun mounted by Yi Qi on the wall erupted in flame, lighting up half the sky.
Before the approaching men even had time to react, a storm of thick, long rounds tore out. The heads of the first ten or so men exploded instantly, blood mist and limbs flying everywhere.
Terrified screams broke out beyond the wall.
Yi Qi kept firing, the recoil making even his cheeks shake. “Come on then! I’ll shred every last one of you foreign bastards!”
The men outside shouted something in guttural foreign speech and quickly scattered in every direction. That made it impossible for the heavy machine gun to mow them down in one sweep.
More and more of them tried to take out Yi Qi behind the wall. A hail of bullets slammed into the steel wall, showering sparks.
Their firepower was no worse than the farm’s. They were even carrying rare shotguns.
The pellets sprayed across the wall like water from an irrigation pipe, pinning Yi Qi and Shen Zheng down so completely they could barely lift their heads and could only take cover.
Shen Zheng dropped back heavily against the steel wall, panting hard, while deafening gunfire hammered behind him so fiercely it sent pain jolting through his back.
“Old man, a few of them are crawling under the wall! They’re heading your way with Mingming!” Yi Qi stuck his head up for a look, but could no longer see many enemies. Realizing something, he barked, “Xiao Zheng, go!”
Shen Zheng braced himself against the pain. “Got it!”
He raced down the ladder.
A dozen or so tall, highly trained men managed to hook grapples onto the farm wall and climb. But the moment they made it up, they discovered that just inside the wall was a deep trench. Two men jumped in first and were skewered through the waist and hips by tall upright blades, blood spraying everywhere.
The men behind them panicked and leapt back out. But four or five others were still fearless. Relying on their height and long legs, they vaulted down in one jump—only to be met by a blast of scorching flame.
They were swallowed whole by fire, their screams filling the air.
One green-eyed man, his back engulfed in flames, rolled on the ground in agony. Through the fire, he spotted Director Wang and, fighting through the pain, drew his pistol and fired at him.
Director Wang stumbled aside. The bullet grazed his arm, and the force of it knocked him to the ground.
“Grandfather!”
Mingming, startled, raised his crossbow and shot at the man. But because he was so nervous, the arrow only struck the man in the shoulder.
“The Son of God.”
Like a burning devil, the man ignored the pain and lunged for Mingming with manic excitement.
Mingming’s eyes went wide. In his heart he screamed: Grandfather!
But the expected pain never came. A black dog flew in front of his chest.
Little Apricot!
The green-eyed devil suddenly shuddered and collapsed backward.
A bullet had pierced his brow.
From the walkie-talkie on Mingming’s chest came Chengcheng’s voice: “Mingming, you were very brave. Grandfather’s hurt. I’ll cover you. Help him back to the core zone, now.”
Mingming, trembling all over, got to his feet, his eyes unnaturally bright.
He stroked the black dog and thought silently: Little Apricot, thank you for saving me!
The black dog only flicked its tail and ran toward the farm’s core zone.
Director Wang was old, after all. That fall had left him unable to rise.
Luckily Shen Zheng had just finished off those men who were trying to vault over the wall.
“Director Wang! Mingming! Are you alright?”
Director Wang’s face was deathly pale. He clutched his wound and gasped, “I’m… fine…”
Shen Zheng helped him up. “I’m taking you back to the core zone.”
But Mingming signed something rapidly and then ran off before anyone could stop him: I’m going to protect Uncle Yi!
“Mingming!”
Director Wang pressed down on Shen Zheng’s hand. Exhausted, he said, “Let him go. In the apocalypse, children can only grow up this way…”
Wei Cheng, who had been guarding the main gate of the core zone the whole time, suddenly frowned.
A cluster of non-blinking red dots was moving toward the back of the farm.
So many zombies? They were coming from all directions, scattered and converging, as if drawn here purely by the gunfire.
He set down the sniper rifle and raced toward the rear of the core zone.
Ying Hui, already there, looked startled to see him. “Chengcheng, it’s almost over! Why are you here?”
Wei Cheng had no way to explain. “Aunt Su Min, don’t let your guard down.”
At that moment, Su Min shouted in shock, “There are so many! So many zombies in the trees!”
On the map, the non-blinking red dots gathered together in a dense writhing cluster.
Like a mass of snail eggs, pulsing and disgusting.
The shattered corpses of the Doomsday Saints had become a stimulant for the zombie horde.
Where had these zombies come from? How long had they been watching?
Then a single shrill zombie howl tore through the air. The zombies stopped feeding. Countless hands slammed against the steel wall. The ground trembled. The wall itself shuddered.
Ying Hui and Wei Cheng stared in shock.
While humans had been fighting each other for resources, the zombies had quietly evolved.
In his previous life, he had never once heard of zombies obeying commands.
Wei Cheng fixed his eyes on the one zombie that was different.
It was small, severely decayed, and in life had probably only been fourteen or fifteen. But its eyes were pitch-black, its skull grotesquely enlarged, and its arms far too long. It looked like something out of a science-fiction horror film.
The zombie threw back its head and howled again. Every zombie stopped using its hands to strike the steel wall and instead began hurling its own body against it.
Some were so rotten they smashed themselves apart, yet still kept ramming with whatever remained, until only their hard skulls were left.
Wei Cheng fired. A shell pinged crisply out of the rifle. He gritted his teeth. “Stop staring and shoot!”
Ying Hui spun around, scrambled up the ladder, and began firing wildly with his rifle.
At the main gate, Shen Zheng shouted urgently, “There are zombies here too! They’re hitting the gate!”
“Don’t panic! Just kill them all!” Yi Qi abruptly swung the heavy machine gun toward them, blasting the zombie pack into pieces.
Su Min, not to be outdone, chased the strange zombie with her fire.
No one could dodge heavy machine gun rounds—but somehow, this zombie dodged several times. Half its body had already been blasted into rotten slurry, and still it kept screaming.
“If that thing doesn’t die, it’ll grind every one of us down,” Wei Cheng thought.
He said something quickly into the walkie-talkie. Both Su Min and Ying Hui replied at the same time, “Okay!”
A bullet screamed past the zombie’s flank, but the zombie seemed to feel nothing. It merely tilted its head and avoided it.
Ying Hui and Su Min poured on more fire. They stopped targeting the other zombies and focused entirely on this one.
Yet the creature finally seemed to sense the danger. Swinging its half-melted arm, it retreated and threw back its head to howl again—
Just then a bullet tore through its throat.
The next bullet struck its skull.
And still it did not fall. It kept trying to howl, and the sight of it was enough to make anyone’s scalp crawl.
Su Min could endure no more. She clenched the trigger and sent the heavy machine gun’s thick rounds crashing into the creature.
Blood and rotting flesh exploded everywhere.
At that very instant, the zombies battering the walls seemed to freeze.
Then they slowly resumed slapping at the steel with their hands. Some bent down and began sniffing at the fresh meat on the ground—broken arms and organs left behind by the Doomsday Saints.
Others started fighting over a severed leg and a pile of guts.
From disciplined zombie soldiers, they became once again the mindless undead the world was used to.
Without that leader, the zombies lost all coordinated threat. The rest became much easier to deal with.
The two heavy machine guns opened up at once. The gunfire gradually thinned, and then stopped.
The smell of blood, rot, and gunpowder burst into the sky together with the first light of dawn.
It was daybreak.
The steel walls were covered in bullet marks, palm-shaped dents, and streaks of blood.
No one on the farm looked particularly joyful about surviving the battle. They were exhausted, filthy with blood and sweat, and in their eyes was not triumph, but a huge and hollow confusion.
If zombies had really evolved intelligence, then what future did humanity even have?
The idea of a zombie king commanding hordes made one’s bones turn cold.
Humans killed humans. Zombies killed humans. How much farther could any of them go?
Wei Cheng wiped the blood from his face with his sleeve and said in a low voice, “Go back and rest for a while.”
Back in the core zone, there was at least one piece of good news.
After checking the injured, Yi Qi was overjoyed. “Their fevers are gone!”
“Xiao… Xiao Min…” Sun Dali had woken up, though his face was ghastly white.
Su Min tightly gripped his hand, eyes red. “Dali, you made it.”
Sun Dali looked around at the people on the farm and moved his lips weakly. “Where are Xiaoyue… and Guanguan?”
Su Min laughed through her tears. “The children are all fine. You just concentrate on recovering.”
Ying Hui also ran to the beds of Lin Xiangfeng and the others.
Yi Qi’s cabin had practically become the infirmary.
Lin Xiangfeng tilted his head. “Where are Xiao Fei and Brother Zhu?”
Ying Hui fell silent for a moment. “They left before the fight started.”
“What?” Zhao Bin struggled to sit up even though one leg was suspended.
Lin Xiangfeng held his chest and coughed. “How could they… they…”
“Enough, Xiangfeng, lie still,” Yi Qi said, patting his shoulder. “Everyone has the right to choose. We respect Ge Fei and Xiao Zhu’s choice. Focus on healing. The rest can wait.”
—
Shen Zheng and Yi Qi collected the weapons and put them away in Wei Cheng’s cabin.
“Chengcheng, are we really going to work with the people from Rose Garden?”
Wei Cheng shook his head. “We’re not just working with Rose Garden. We’re also working with the Thirteenth Union Canning Factory and Highland Shelter. Rose Garden sits on that much fuel and that many supplies. If they keep staying shut in and isolated, all they’ll do is attract more greed and more fighting. A single Watcher Community was already enough to make their lives miserable. Yet they held out until now. I think since the very start of the apocalypse, they were already cooperating with the Canning Factory and Highland Shelter. It’s just that after the Watcher Community weakened, those three sides couldn’t split the profits evenly, and Rose Garden ended up getting squeezed by the other two.”
Shen Zheng nodded. “With the situation as it is now, we have no choice. We have to step in.”
“What exactly did you tell Chen Fangshun to say to them?”
Wei Cheng replied, “First, I told the women staying at the roadside motel to launch fake attacks on the church these next few days and draw the Doomsday Saints away. If they didn’t, there would have been even more attackers last night. At the very least, it buys us some breathing room.”
“Second, I told him the leader of Rose Garden has to come talk business with us in person. The meeting place will be at the border between Wushan and Linshui City.”
Shen Zheng raised an eyebrow. “The gas station where Chen Fangshun’s wife died?”
Wei Cheng nodded. “That’s the one.”
“When are we meeting?”
“The morning of the twenty-eighth.”
Yi Qi counted it out. “That’s three days from now.”
“Brother, where are you…”
Guanguan was sitting on the wooden cabinet bed, naked as the day he was born, rubbing his eyes and calling out, “Where’s brother…”
Wei Cheng hurried over. “I’m right here.”
Yi Qi burst out laughing. “Whose kid sleeps without even wearing underpants?”
Embarrassed, Guanguan scampered behind his brother and covered his own eyes. “No peeking! Nobody can look!”
Yi Qi laughed. “Alright, alright, we won’t look.”
Guanguan backed up into the blanket, plugging his nose with two fingers. “Brother, Uncle, why do you both smell weird?”
Wei Cheng sniffed his own clothes and caught the stench at once—a vile mix of blood and rotting corpses.
“We were fighting zombies yesterday.”
Guanguan bared his teeth. “And you still didn’t bring your Guanguan!”
Wei Cheng laughed. “You were long asleep yesterday. Even if I’d called you, you wouldn’t have woken up.”
“That’s true. When Baby sleeps, Baby turns into a little pig.” Guanguan propped up his chubby face with his hands and swung his feet. “But the Ultraman gun still hasn’t been used!”
“Don’t rush. It’ll get used in a couple of days.”
Three days later, Shen Zheng stayed behind to hold down the farm while the injured finally stabilized. Wei Cheng, Guanguan, Yi Qi, and Su Min headed for Linshui City’s gas station.
Several cars with no dust on them were parked nearby.
The moment the four of them stepped inside the station, they were stopped by two tall, beautiful women.
“No guns allowed.”
Yi Qi let out a soft laugh. “And what’s the logic behind that?”
One of the women replied, “Our Sister Qing said so. The sisters who harassed the Doomsday Saints these past few days got badly hurt. The sisters of Rose Garden may not share a surname, but we are blood-bound branches of the same flower. When they hurt, we hurt. Sister Qing will never again let our sisters be injured so easily.”
The other woman was far less polite. “You think you get all the advantages? Hand over the guns or leave. If the alliance falls apart, then so be it.”
Su Min was the first to hand hers over. “Take it.”
Yi Qi looked reluctant, but he still surrendered his pistol. “That’s all I’ve got.”
When they searched him, they found another pistol tucked at the back of his waist.
The beauty smacked him with the gun. “Not a single honest sentence ever comes out of a man’s mouth!”
Knowing he was in the wrong, Yi Qi didn’t dare say a word.
When it came to Wei Cheng and Guanguan, the women’s attitude softened a lot.
“Big sister, this is Guanguan’s Ultraman baby gun. Here.” Guanguan held out his weapon.
The woman picked it up, checked it over, and said, “A toy gun? Keep it, baby.”
Guanguan scratched his face. “Okay, then.”
He had told the truth, but big sister just didn’t believe him!
After the body search was over, they were finally allowed inside the station proper.
The room smelled stale and heavy, but because there were so many pretty girls inside, the dusty old gas station somehow felt bright.
A short-haired woman cleaning a gun drew both Wei Cheng’s and Guanguan’s attention.
Guanguan rubbed his eyes, rose on tiptoe to look closer, then rubbed them hard again.
In a tiny voice, he whispered:
“Little… Little Mei Teacher…”
