Chapter 86
Wei Cheng and Yi Qi had no choice but to throw aside their crossbows and switch to rifles, firing into the zombie horde that kept closing in.
When he heard the roar of an engine behind them, Yi Qi shouted while shooting, “Chengcheng, get Guanguan into the car first!”
The white car screeched to a stop beside them, revealing Shen Uncle’s pale, anxious face.
“Chengcheng! Get in!”
Wei Cheng glanced at Yi Qi, who was still covering him and Guanguan, then yanked open the door and shoved the already-awake-and-terrified Guanguan into the back seat.
“Brother…” Guanguan had long since been scared awake. His little pale face still had tear tracks on it.
“Don’t be afraid.”
Just as Wei Cheng was about to get in, he looked up and saw something. His brows instantly drew tight.
The next second, he slammed the car door shut, spun around, and shot down a zombie that had been trying to sneak up behind Yi Qi.
The distant Yi Qi was startled out of his skin and flashed him a thumbs-up.
But in the instant Wei Cheng turned back around, more and more zombies lunged toward him.
For the moment, he couldn’t get into the car.
From inside, Shen Zheng shouted while shooting, “Chengcheng, Yi Qi, get under—”
Before he could finish, a zombie suddenly lunged in through the driver’s side window.
Shen Zheng was just about to fire, but at that exact moment his pistol jammed!
“Shit!”
The usually gentle Shen Zheng actually cursed. What terrible luck today!
Gritting his teeth, he swung the butt of the gun straight into the zombie’s face. The zombie let out a tortured howl as black blood, rotting flesh, and shattered eyeballs splattered everywhere.
At the same time, several zombies howled and slammed their fists against the back door.
Not good!
Shen Zheng immediately locked the doors.
Guanguan clutched a glowing star-shaped keychain tightly in his little hands. His face was taut, and he was trembling as he cried, “Help Brother… Uncle…”
“Guanguan, don’t be scared!”
Shen Zheng was breathing hard, hands shaking as he swapped magazines.
Wei Cheng dodged a claw swipe coming straight at him, kicked a zombie charging at him to the ground, then rolled cleanly under the car.
On the other side, Yi Qi fired a cold shot and then quickly dove under the sightseeing car as well.
But one zombie after another tried to crawl beneath the vehicle to tear into their flesh.
Wei Cheng kept shooting left and right. Then his gaze landed on the increasingly open space to the right, and a way out formed in his mind.
There were ready-made gasoline bottles in the basement. He could first toss out some fresh meat from the safety house fridge. The zombies would swarm toward the smell. He could use that moment to get into the car. Then he and Shen Uncle could drive over to cover Yi Uncle as he got in. After that, they could use the gasoline bottles to cover their escape…
Suddenly, not far away, an ear-splitting blast of fireworks and firecrackers exploded into the air.
The entire parking lot seemed to shake three times.
The zombies stopped attacking all at once. The three of them under and around the car also went completely still, lowering their guns.
The horde slowly rose from the ground and staggered toward the source of the huge noise.
The fireworks only got louder. They never stopped.
Under the car, Wei Cheng closed his eyes briefly, pressing the gun to his chest, but he did not move for a long time.
It was the “mascots” from the amusement park who had helped them.
Why had those people slashed their tires, yet now helped them?
What exactly were “they” plotting?
“Chengcheng?”
Yi Qi’s trembling voice came from above him.
“I’m fine.”
He reached out a hand, and Yi Qi quickly hauled him out.
Yi Qi was covered in blood. He gripped Wei Cheng’s shoulders just as hard, looking him over from top to bottom to see if he’d been hurt anywhere.
When he confirmed the boy was all right, he let out a heavy breath of relief.
“It’s good you’re okay. Good. Let’s go home.”
As soon as Shen Zheng saw the two of them get in, he floored the accelerator and shot straight through the parking barrier toward the direction opposite the fireworks.
At the top floor of the Mouse Colorful Children’s Theme Hotel, a long-haired woman in a red dress lowered her night-vision binoculars.
“Sister Qing.”
The sound of high heels in the night felt eerily hollow and sharp.
“They’ve left Shiguang Amusement Park.”
The woman delivering the message glanced at Sister Qing’s back and asked in confusion, “Don’t you hate men the most? Why did you save them?”
The woman said coldly, “I just thought that cute little girl was kind of pitiful.”
“The little…”
The messenger blinked. She clearly remembered the surveillance report saying there had been two little boys and two disgusting men.
It was true that the younger child was said to be adorable, with soft little woolly curls.
As for the gender… better not tell Sister Qing.
“Did you get in touch with President Qin from Highland Shelter?”
“We did.”
The messenger paused.
“They said 3,000 liters of gasoline can only be exchanged for four guns and eighty rounds.”
Sister Qing folded her arms and let out a cold laugh.
“What shamelessness. The moment his revenge was taken, he forgot his own damn name. When Watcher Community raided his home before, who was it that delivered supplies to him?”
“Watcher Community was badly weakened. Right now, in all of Yu City, only the Thirteenth United Cannery and Highland Shelter have the most guns.”
The messenger hesitated.
“Why not just commission hunters from one of those two bases to deal with it?”
“Men are useless. If men were reliable, pigs could climb trees!”
Sister Qing tapped the white railing lightly with her red-painted nails, eyes fierce.
“Those foreigners stole our children. I’m going to cut their heads off with my own hands.”
Then she paused, as if recalling something.
“Did you send someone to follow those people?”
Of course she could tell it was a little boy, held tightly in the arms of a slightly older child.
But the way those three had risked their lives protecting the child—and the courage they’d shown—had made her feel that maybe those two men weren’t as selfish, disgusting, and vicious as the others.
More importantly, they had guns.
This wasn’t some foreign country. In their country, not everyone could legally carry firearms. So where had those guns come from, and how many did they have?
The messenger answered confidently, “Don’t worry. I sent Xiao Qiu to follow them.”
By dawn, a group of sharp-looking women in red came running over.
“We lost them!”
Xiao Qiu said in frustration, “They headed straight into the mountains after leaving the city. The mountain road was dead quiet. We were afraid of spooking them, so we didn’t dare follow too closely. After a while, we thought we heard brakes. By the time we got there, the car was there—but the people were gone!”
…
Shen Zheng was a veteran driver.
He had sensed long ago that someone was tailing them.
Once they left the city, he intentionally drove up into the mountain road. The moment they spotted a barren, shadowy forest, the four of them abandoned the car without hesitation.
Wei Cheng immediately summoned the Twisty Car, turned on invisibility and every defensive function, and sped away with everyone inside.
An hour later, the invisibility ran out.
After that, they switched to the safety house’s little truck and sped along the mountain road.
By the time they finally made it back to Wuqing Mountain, the exhaustion in their bodies vanished as their nerves shot taut again.
The farm had been attacked.
Even from far away, they could smell the thick stench of blood.
The truck stopped at the farm gate. Corpses were scattered all around the wall. The steel wall itself had a huge dent in it, as though someone had slammed a battering log against it.
The four of them all went pale.
“Baby’s home! Grandpa, Brother! Uncles!”
Guanguan was so anxious tears nearly burst from his eyes.
Then the steel gate moved with a heavy groan.
Two ragged boys ran out from inside.
“Uncle Yi! Uncle Shen! Y-you’re finally back!”
“Ying Hui!”
Yi Qi jumped down from the driver’s seat.
“What happened? The farm was attacked? Who did it?!”
Ying Hui was filthy and disheveled, his clothes covered in blood and grime. He choked on his tears as he said, “It was—it was those foreigners! Not long after you left, they left some spooky recorder on the mountain and kept chanting about handing over the Son of God. We went all over looking for them with Uncle Sun, but couldn’t find a trace. We were on full alert all day yesterday—no one dared sleep, no one dared rest. Sure enough, once it got dark, a group of masked hunters attacked the farm. They were strong, and there were just too many of them. A few still managed to break into the farm…”
Wei Cheng tightened, voice sharp. “Who was hurt?”
Ying Hui wiped at his tears, sobbing. “Zhao Bin got shot in the arm. Xiao Li got hit in the shoulder… Xiangfeng’s leg was injured. And Uncle Sun… Uncle Sun got bitten by a hunter who turned into a zombie.”
Wei Cheng jolted. “When was he bitten? Where?”
“Just now, while we were cleaning up the bodies. The bite was on his left hand…”
Ying Hui slammed his own head with his fist, crying so hard he could barely breathe.
“He got bitten saving me! I should die! I’m the one who should die!”
Wei Cheng exchanged a look with Yi Qi. Without another word, the two of them rushed into the farm.
Shen Zheng lifted Guanguan into the truck and patted Ying Hui on the shoulder, suppressing his own grief as he tried to comfort him.
“Don’t cry anymore. What you need to do now is close the gate, protect the farm, and protect Uncle Sun’s wife and daughter.”
Ying Hui cried and nodded.
The truck drove into the farm, and the steel gate slammed shut behind them.
Outside one of the small cabins in the core zone, a group of the truly old, weak, injured, and children had gathered.
Su Min was crying her heart out, pounding on the wooden door.
“Sun Dali! Open the door! Open the damn door!”
Xiaoyue was buried in her mother’s arms, sobbing.
“Dad, Dad, don’t die! Dad, I want Dad…”
Someone suddenly cried out, “Brother Chengcheng is back!”
It was like an injection of strength. Everyone turned toward them at once, faces full of desperate hope.
“Chengcheng!”
“Guanguan!”
“Uncle Shen! Uncle Yi!”
Director Wang, limping, caught Guanguan as he threw himself over.
“Guanguan’s fine. Don’t be scared. Don’t cry.”
Guanguan’s eyes were red.
“Where’s Uncle Sun?”
Director Wang opened his mouth, then could only close his eyes and let out a sigh.
Wei Cheng knocked lightly on the wooden door.
“Uncle Dali, open the door.”
From inside came Sun Dali’s calm voice.
“Chengcheng, Uncle was bitten. I can’t come out now.”
“You’re all good people. Take care of Xiaoyue and Aunt Su Min for me…”
Wei Cheng’s face changed sharply.
“Yi Uncle, kick the door!”
Yi Qi kicked the wooden door open in one strike.
Sun Dali’s hand holding the gun at his throat trembled.
Xiaoyue tried to run in, but Director Wang grabbed her.
“Dad!”
Sun Dali’s eyes were red. He gritted his teeth and roared, “Close the door!”
He didn’t want his wife and daughter to watch him shoot himself.
Yi Qi lifted both hands and slowly approached.
“Dali, don’t do anything rash. Give me the gun.”
Sun Dali shouted, “I was bitten by a zombie! I’m going to turn into one any minute now! Can’t you at least let me leave a decent image in front of Xiaoyue?”
“All right, I’ll close the door…”
Yi Qi stepped back once, then suddenly spun around and slammed into Sun Dali’s left arm. His already injured hand gave out, and the gun hit the floor with a crack.
Yi Qi pinned him against the table. Then, after carefully checking the fingers on the bitten hand and studying the wound, his eyes lit up.
“There’s still hope!”
Sun Dali struggled, tears streaming down his face.
“Don’t let me destroy the farm!”
