Stock Up For Natural Disasters And Cubs Survive – CH68

Chapter 68

Shen Zheng steadied himself and climbed down from the ladder. He said to Yi Qi, “Come on, let’s find Chengcheng first.”

They knocked on the main gate of the core zone, and hurried footsteps quickly sounded from inside.

Director Wang opened the door, worry written all over his face. “Mr. Shen, Mr. Yi, how is it outside?”

“Director, let’s go in and talk,” Yi Qi said grimly.

Shen Zheng then told everyone exactly what was happening outside.

Yi Qi cursed, “It must have been Chen Fangshun who sold us out! If it weren’t for the fact that he had a wife and kid, and women and children can’t survive more than a few days in the apocalypse…”

“Calm down. Now’s not the time for that.” Shen Zheng patted Yi Qi on the shoulder. “What we need to do now is kill back the zombies. The steel wall is strong, but if we let them keep pushing at it for too long, it’ll still be dangerous.”

Wei Cheng fell silent for a moment, then said, “Director Grandpa, your legs aren’t good. Climbing high would be dangerous. Stay in the core zone and look after the kids. I’ll go out with the two uncles.”

Director Wang nodded. “All right!”

Wei Cheng returned to the wooden cabin, slung his gun bag over his back, and then carried the still-sleeping Guanguan out.

The child was so sleepy he couldn’t open his eyes. His little chubby legs bounced weakly. “Brother, time for breakfash…”

He was completely sleep-dazed.

Wei Cheng pressed his cheek gently to Guanguan’s warm little face and said softly, “Go back to sleep. It’s not morning yet. When you wake up, Brother will bake egg tarts for you.”

Even in his sleep, the child’s mouth curved into a little crescent moon smile.

Outside the door, Director Wang took Guanguan and urged, “Chengcheng, be careful. Stay far away from those zombies…”

“Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ll protect myself.”

Wei Cheng said, “If Guanguan wakes up in the middle of the night and can’t find me, he might cry. Grandpa, just call Little Apricot into the room. If Guanguan sees Little Apricot, he won’t cry.”

Director Wang nodded repeatedly. “All right, all right, Grandpa remembers.”

Wei Cheng looked at the two uncles beside him, both carrying gun cases and ammo bags, and said, “Let’s go.”

After leaving the core zone, he said quickly, “Outside the farm there’s nothing but forest and empty roads. How could a thousand zombies suddenly attack the base? Where did these zombies come from, and what attracted or drove them here? Someone planned this for a long time.”

“We were being watched a long time ago. Someone herded these zombies here.”

Yi Qi said, “Could it be Red Hair’s father from Guardwatch Community coming for revenge?”

Wei Cheng answered without hesitation, “No.”

He wanted to say that he knew Guardwatch Community’s style. They relied on their stocked weapon stores and were arrogant and domineering by nature. If they really had found the killer of their son, the first thing to arrive would have been a large group of well-equipped hunters.

But this time, the mastermind clearly lacked weapons and wanted to use the zombie horde to seize the base.

Maybe it was one of those small groups he had encountered in his previous life.

By the time they reached the barbed-wire area near the farm, the low growls of the zombies and the pounding and slamming against the steel wall made their scalps go numb.

All those sounds mixed together were as irritating as the buzzing of tens of thousands of mosquitoes.

Psychologically, it created enormous pressure.

The three of them opened the wire fence, pulled off the steel spike strips, and quickly secured the long ladder against the wall.

Wei Cheng opened the black gun bag and handed helmets to the two uncles. “Put the helmets on. Keep your bodies hidden below the wall as much as possible. Don’t expose too much. I think someone is watching all of this from the mountain.”

Zombies nearby, hunters outside.

The two men couldn’t help but grow tense and cautious. “Got it! Be careful!”

The three put on their helmets, fastened their night-vision goggles, hoisted two assault rifles and the gun bag, and rapidly climbed the ladder.

Even after all these months, seeing zombies again still disgusted Wei Cheng.

The zombies no longer looked human.

They had no hair left, their bodies were covered in foul-smelling rotten flesh, and their faces were covered with barnacle-like blotches.

Suppressing his nausea, Wei Cheng aimed at one zombie that was madly bashing its head against the steel wall like a wild boar.

One gunshot. Its head burst open, spraying dark sludge, flesh, and maggots in every direction.

Gunfire rang out one after another.

The dense zombie horde was all drawn toward them, roaring and rushing forward in a writhing mass, but what awaited those walking corpses were only cold, merciless bullets.

His still-young fingers were going numb from the recoil of the gun, yet there wasn’t a trace of retreat or fear on his face. His eyes were sharp as he raised the rifle and sprayed bullets into the zombies below the wall.

From pitch-dark night to the first light of dawn, zombie blood and flesh flew everywhere. One after another, they fell, until corpses piled like mountains.

At that moment, the figures hidden in the forest finally moved.

Someone said with excitement and delight, “Brother Zheng Hui, they really do have a lot of bullets! After killing that many zombies, there’s still gunfire. That snitch didn’t lie to us!”

The leader was a dark-faced man with bulging chest muscles, looking more like a fitness trainer than anything else.

He tossed the binoculars to the person beside him, pinched out the cigarette in his palm, and said hoarsely, “This base is ours now.”

More than a dozen men behind him broke into jeers and cheers full of confidence.

Zheng Hui said, “We’re going down the mountain first. Liu Xian, leave two men here to keep watching from above and see exactly how many people they have.”

“Yes, boss.”

Zheng Hui took his men down the mountain. A few scattered zombies were still roaming in the woods, and as soon as they smelled fresh human flesh, they lunged at them.

A few of the newly recruited survivors, eager to show loyalty, drew their knives and chopped off the zombies’ heads.

At the foot of the mountain were parked four black sedans and one pickup truck.

Human remains were scattered across the ground.

That pickup truck was how they had lured the zombies over from the distant town.

Naturally, the truck bed had been filled with fresh human flesh.

They had begun setting up this whole trap a full month ago.

The night before the incident, their underlings had already laid out a trail of flesh leading all the way to that steel wall everyone coveted.

They had even drained the blood from a woman and splashed it all over the steel wall.

There had originally been a little boy too, but that little boy had managed to escape.

Still, with Linshui City crawling with zombies, where could a child like that possibly run to?

After the zombie horde finished eating the meat in the pickup, they would naturally keep following the smell of blood forward…

Zheng Hui yanked open a car door, and a man with bound hands and feet and injuries all over his body threw himself forward. “Where’s my wife? Where’s my son!”

Zheng Hui shoved the man down and snapped, “Shut up!”

Liu Xian was slick. He helped the man upright. “Come on now, Brother Shun, don’t make the boss angry.”

The man’s eyes were blazing, the corners of his mouth split with wounds. “Where’s my wife? Where’s my son? You fucking promised me—”

Zheng Hui grabbed his jaw and sneered. “I kept you alive because I liked the look of you. Don’t refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit. Tie him up properly and throw him in the pickup.”

Liu Xian hauled the man away. “Move. Hurry up.”

Suddenly, the man said, “Brother Liu, I… I’ve got a watch in my pocket…”

Liu Xian licked his lips. “The boss gave it to you?”

“No. My wife gave it to me.”

When Liu Xian felt around, he really did pull out a watch. His eyes lit up. “Damn, it’s a Longines.”

He smoothly slipped the watch into his own pocket.

Seeing that, the man suddenly remembered that he had once wanted to give that watch to the person who had helped his family of three.

There were two forks in the road near the farm—one leading to Wuqing City, one to Linshui City.

At the time, the three of them had wanted to head to the closer Linshui City.

But who could have expected that halfway there they would run into a gang blocking the road?

Those people had taken their car and supplies, then held his son by the throat and forced them to say where they had come from. He had been about to make up a lie, but his wife had been too afraid that their son would be hurt, and she had blurted out the farm’s location.

And she had even exaggerated how rich the farm was in supplies.

By the time he wanted to cut her off, it was already too late.

He understood this world too well.

The only good people left in all of Linshui City and Wuqing City were probably at that farm.

Once people like this found them, whether they told the truth or lied, they were doomed either way. How could his wife have been so stupid!

From that day on, he had never seen his wife or child again.

The man forced back his sobs and said softly, “Brother Liu, can you untie my hands? I… I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have cursed the boss.”

Liu Xian glanced at him, then reached out and untied the ropes. “That’s more like it. You need to go along with what the boss wants. The boss really likes you. And your wife said you know that farm well. In a couple of days, when we seize the base, you’d better help the boss a lot. Your wife and son are both waiting for you.”

The man nodded repeatedly. “I… I’ll definitely help the boss!”

He was shut into the dark pickup bed.

The whole place reeked of thick, nauseating blood.

The man closed his eyes.

His wife and child were probably dead already.

After driving for nearly an hour, the vehicles stopped at a large gas station in Linshui City.

A bunch of men got down laughing and joking. Liu Xian pulled open the pickup’s back door, and the cigarette hanging from his mouth dropped to the ground. “Where is he?!”

The others all crowded over. “Who’s missing?”

“Chen Fangshun is gone!”

Zheng Hui strode over and slammed open the truck bed. “I told you to tie him up properly. Did you fucking tie him or not?!”

Liu Xian instinctively touched the watch on his wrist and stiffened his chest. “Boss, I tied him! I really tied him!”

“If you tied him, then how the fuck is he gone?!” Zheng Hui roared.

The commotion outside brought the underlings running out of the gas station too.

Liu Xian dropped heavily to his knees and looked up in panic. “Boss, I really tied him! Believe me!”

Zheng Hui clenched his fists. Thinking that they would need manpower soon to seize the base, he forced himself to let it go.

But he was still furious. He kicked Liu Xian in the shoulder. “Then why aren’t you out looking for him yet?! If we want to take that base, we absolutely need this man!”

Liu Xian scrambled to his feet. “I’m going right now!”

Two cars sped away at once.

Zheng Hui was left with his anger lodged in his chest.

Just then, he heard the sound of another vehicle approaching.

He was just about to start swearing when an old black car screeched to a stop.

Some of his men were about to go intercept it with knives, but Zheng Hui stopped them with a hand. “No. Put your stuff away.”

A tall man stepped out of the car, clearly noticing the crowd gathered inside the gas station.

He knew the rules and immediately raised both hands. “Brother, can I trade you food for gasoline?”

Zheng Hui’s gaze fell on the man’s face, then shifted to the gaunt woman and little girl in the passenger seat.

He curled his lips into a smile. “Sure.”
