Chapter 6
Xia Chenxi pushed Ye Xuan’s hand away.
“First of all, I don’t have a habit of biting people. Second, my special condition doesn’t mean the same thing will happen to you. Lastly, I don’t want another zombie corpse in this stinking space.”
Ye Xuan withdrew his hand resentfully and muttered in a low voice, “What if I can mutate like you and gain some special ability?”
Xia Chenxi snorted coldly. “If it were really that simple, would there still be so many neither-human-nor-ghost zombies outside?”
Ye Xuan stopped discussing this topic with Xia Chenxi. He could tell Xia Chenxi did not want to bite him. Besides, Xia Chenxi was right. If he got bitten, he would also have to bear unknown risks.
Right now, they should think about how to get out. It was almost dark.
As if seeing through Ye Xuan’s thoughts, Xia Chenxi said to him, “Don’t bother thinking about this fire door. It’s locked.”
Locked?
Ye Xuan suddenly remembered that they had come down from the west-side staircase, and the doors on the west side were usually locked.
Then how were they supposed to get out now? Did they have to run back upstairs and pass through layers of zombies again?
Ye Xuan felt the world spin for a moment. So all their effort just now had been for nothing.
Xia Chenxi was not as pessimistic as Ye Xuan. He walked over to the glass window fitted with anti-theft bars.
“We’ll get out from here.”
“No, this is tempered glass, and there are anti-theft bars too. Are you planning to tear it apart with your bare hands?”
“Just watch.”
Under Ye Xuan’s gaze, Xia Chenxi swiftly removed the glass window in a few moves, then forcibly bent the anti-theft bars open with his bare hands.
Ye Xuan widened his eyes, unable to believe what he had just seen.
Xia Chenxi was a monster, right?
“Stop standing there. Hurry and come out.” Xia Chenxi climbed out first and reached his hand toward Ye Xuan from the window.
With Xia Chenxi’s help, Ye Xuan climbed out as well.
They were now at the back of the dorm building. When the zombie outbreak first happened, a large number of zombies had surged into the dorm building, so there were almost no zombies at the back.
Xia Chenxi pointed at an electric scooter not far away with its key still inserted. Who knew which fleeing person had panicked so badly they had even forgotten to pull out the key.
He gestured for Ye Xuan to stand where he was and wait for him to ride the scooter over.
Ye Xuan’s nerves were stretched tight. He gripped the broom handle in his hand and watched Xia Chenxi.
The scooter was parked around the corner. Xia Chenxi tried to keep his movements as quiet as possible as he approached it. Outside, even if there were not thousands of zombies, there were at least hundreds. Once they made too much noise, it would not be something he and Ye Xuan could handle.
Fortunately, Xia Chenxi reached the electric scooter without any real danger. He swung a leg over it, twisted the handle, accelerated, and rode to Ye Xuan’s side.
Ye Xuan held Xia Chenxi’s shoulder and used the force to sit behind him.
“Hold on tight.”
Ye Xuan could not care about embarrassment now. He wrapped one arm around Xia Chenxi’s waist and abdomen. He had not expected that although Xia Chenxi looked thin, his waist and abdomen were extremely firm and powerful. The hard sensation beneath his palm told him that Xia Chenxi had abs.
He had no time to let his thoughts wander and focused his attention on their surroundings. A zombie could attack them at any moment.
Xia Chenxi twisted the handle all the way. The electric scooter was forcefully ridden by him with the imposing momentum of a motorcycle.
It was terrifying. If not for the hand wrapped around Xia Chenxi’s waist supporting him, Ye Xuan had reasonable suspicion that Xia Chenxi was trying to fling him off like a zombie.
It felt like experiencing a real-life version of The Fast and the Furious.
Xia Chenxi rode past the back of the dorm building and headed onto another small road.
“Where are we going?”
“The convenience store.”
The convenience store was indeed a very good choice. It was not far away, had abundant supplies inside, and compared with the dorm building, there were relatively fewer zombies there. It was the best possible destination.
This small road was under construction, so no one passed through it. From here, they could reach the back of the convenience store without directly clashing with those zombies.
Had Xia Chenxi already come up with this idea the moment he saw the electric scooter? Or had he had this idea from the moment they left the room, and this electric scooter was just an unexpected bonus in his plan?
Ye Xuan glanced toward Xia Chenxi, only to see him staring straight ahead, his lips pressed tightly together.
“What?”
Like someone caught doing something guilty, Ye Xuan withdrew his gaze. “Nothing.”
Under Xia Chenxi’s race-like way of riding, they soon arrived at the back of the convenience store.
Ye Xuan jumped off the scooter, and Xia Chenxi got off as well.
Even though they had fought their way here, they were still facing a huge difficulty. They had to go around from the back of the convenience store to the front door. Just from where he was standing, Ye Xuan could already see three zombies wandering back and forth.
For convenience, Xia Chenxi had thrown away the half piece of bed board. Right now, the two of them only had the broom handle in Ye Xuan’s hand as a weapon, and they had no idea how many zombies were waiting in front of the convenience store.
“I’ll draw them away. Find a chance to run into the convenience store.”
Before Ye Xuan could ask how he was going to draw them away, Xia Chenxi bounced back and forth between the walls, using astonishing arm strength to grab the edge and climb onto the roof.
This…
Ye Xuan stared, dumbfounded.
Then he saw Xia Chenxi sprint and leap onto another platform. Xia Chenxi took out his phone, fiddled with it a few times, and threw it hard into the distance. Melodious music sounded from far away. When the zombies heard it, they swarmed toward that direction like mad.
Seeing this, Ye Xuan immediately ran into the convenience store. He rushed straight to the stockroom, twisted the handle, but found that no matter what he did, the door would not open.
The door had been locked from the inside.
Ye Xuan was so anxious he could die. The zombies might break in at any moment. If this door did not open, he and Xia Chenxi would both die here.
He knocked on the door and asked, “Is anyone inside? Please open the door.”
No one responded.
Ye Xuan tried to ram the door open with his body.
Suddenly, music also started playing inside.
Ye Xuan stopped moving, a chill rising from the bottom of his heart. There was someone inside, but they refused to open the door. They even wanted to use the music to lure zombies over and have him and Xia Chenxi bitten to death.
Thud.
Xia Chenxi landed in front of the convenience store. Seeing Ye Xuan standing in front of the stockroom door, he said nothing.
Because of the music in the stockroom, Ye Xuan saw zombies already charging over.
He gave Xia Chenxi a bitter smile. They were going to die here.
After finally holding on and making it here from the dorm building, were they still unable to escape the fate of being bitten by zombies?
“You’re not dead yet. Why are you making such an ugly expression?”
Xia Chenxi mocked Ye Xuan, then turned around and strode toward the large truck. He grabbed the edge of the truck and, with unbelievable strength, moved the large truck inward, blocking the huge hole that had been smashed open by it.
The zombies gathered outside, scratching at the truck body. The sound was sharp and ear-piercing.
If not for Xia Chenxi, Ye Xuan would never have been able to make it here by himself. Xia Chenxi himself was already a miracle.
Xia Chenxi turned around and said coldly to Ye Xuan, “Don’t look at me with those disgusting eyes.”
Only then did Ye Xuan come back to his senses. He withdrew his gaze and coughed twice.
The music in the stockroom was still playing. Xia Chenxi walked to the door, and Ye Xuan turned on the flashlight behind him.
With just one punch, the door shattered into pieces.
Ye Xuan shone the flashlight inside. A thin, weak-looking man was curled up in the corner with a phone in his hand, staring in panic at these two unexpected intruders.
