Surgical Risks

Chapter 55: Surgical Risks

Jiang Rong hadn’t stayed overnight in the dorm at night for a long time. It wasn’t that he felt uncomfortable—he usually came back at noon to nap, and all his necessities were there—but it simply wasn’t as convenient as being at home.

Lying on a bed barely over a meter wide still felt a little unfamiliar.

When he lived at home, after showering at night he would wait for He Siming on a two-meter-wide bed. But today, he sat on the narrow dorm bed, watching He Siming walk back and forth below. They had only lived together for two or three months, yet he had already developed such a strong sense of dependence on home.

Or rather, it wasn’t the house he depended on.

It was He Siming.

His feelings for He Siming seemed to be growing deeper and deeper.

When He Siming finished washing up and came back, he saw Jiang Rong sitting on the simple bed, hugging his blanket, his gaze following He Siming’s movements.

Yao Shule and Li Yizhou were already lying on their beds, playing on their phones.

He Siming glanced at them, then walked over to Jiang Rong’s bed.
“Not sleeping yet?”

Jiang Rong was always obedient in front of He Siming.
“I can’t fall asleep yet.”

He Siming smiled and asked, “Didn’t you rest in the dorm at noon too? Why can’t you sleep at night?”

Jiang Rong felt embarrassed to say that he was used to sleeping while cuddling with He Siming at night—he had grown accustomed to his embrace. Not being able to sleep together tonight probably meant he would fall asleep more slowly. But he didn’t want to let He Siming get smug, so he didn’t say it.

“I’m just not used to it yet,” Jiang Rong said.

He Siming was about to say something when the lights suddenly went out.

Jiang Rong had been away from the dorm for a long time and had forgotten that the school turned off the lights at night. He froze for a moment.

He Siming reached out and tugged Jiang Rong’s hand, squeezing his palm gently.
“Go to sleep.”

“Mm,” Jiang Rong responded and lay down, but He Siming was still holding his hand, not letting go right away.

He wanted to fall asleep quickly, but Yao Shule suddenly switched into late-night chat mode.

“Suddenly realized, we haven’t all been together like this in 519 for a long time. Rongrong, when are you having the surgery?”

In the darkness, voices sounded especially clear.

Jiang Rong didn’t avoid the topic of surgery. He even felt a bit of anticipation about the baby’s arrival.

“The exact time still needs to be discussed with the doctor. Pr—probably July?” He almost said the due date.

Yao Shule was always enthusiastic, and he genuinely cared about Jiang Rong.
“That’s perfect—it’s summer vacation then. I won’t go home for the summer. I’ll go to the hospital to take care of you.”

“No need,” He Siming said. “I’ll take care of him.”

“That won’t do,” Yao Shule said. “I’m Rongrong’s best friend. God He, don’t take everything on yourself. That’s exhausting.”

He Siming: “…”
His wife was giving birth to his baby—being tired was something he had to bear.

“Let’s talk about it when the time comes,” Jiang Rong said. “The date isn’t fixed yet. The surgery time might change.”

His body was different from others’, and the baby was growing faster than normal. It might not be July—there was a chance it would be earlier.

“Anyway, if you need us, just say the word,” Li Yizhou said.

“Exactly,” Yao Shule echoed.

“Okay,” Jiang Rong replied. “If I need help, I’ll tell you.”

“By the way,” Yao Shule said, “our dorm has never really done late-night chats. Do you know what people usually talk about during night chats?”

“Games, of course!” Li Yizhou said.

“Don’t even start,” Yao Shule replied. “You haven’t even reached King rank this season.”

“Isn’t that because you’re bad?” Li Yizhou shot back.

“Don’t interrupt,” Yao Shule said. “Let me look it up! Got it—something you three might all face in the future. I definitely won’t.”

“What topic?” Li Yizhou asked.

“What kind of wife you’ll marry in the future. You know who I’m most curious about?” Yao Shule said.

Li Yizhou laughed. “God He, of course. By the way, God He, have you ever had a girlfriend?”

The two of them were like a rehearsed duo, and Jiang Rong listened with a grin.

He Siming, who rarely joined in, finally spoke:
“I’ve never had a girlfriend.”

That immediately got them excited—this was first-hand gossip.

“Then what kind of partner would you marry in the future?” Yao Shule asked.

“Whoever gets married first is an idiot,” Li Yizhou said. “Such a great youth—how can you get married so early? God He is definitely focused on building his career.”

He Siming: “…”
He would gladly be that idiot.

Jiang Rong was smiling to himself.

Yao Shule still wanted an answer from He Siming.
“God He, hurry up and say it, or I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”

“If my partner is willing,” He Siming said, “I’d get married immediately.”

Jiang Rong quietly pulled the blanket higher. “…”

Yao Shule hadn’t expected such a sincere answer.
“Who’s your partner? Is there something we’re not allowed to know?”

He Siming rested his hands behind his head and laughed.
“Jiang Rong.”

“Cut it out,” Yao Shule said.

“Hahaha!” Li Yizhou laughed.

Jiang Rong: “…”
He had been a little nervous for a moment, but the two of them didn’t believe it at all and thought He Siming was just joking.

But… would he marry He Siming?

He subconsciously touched his belly. The baby was already there—marriage suddenly felt like the natural next step. But…

As they chatted, he grew sleepy. He really was exhausted today.

Yao Shule was still asking Jiang Rong about when he had his first girlfriend, but there was no response.

“Huh? Rongrong already fell asleep?” Yao Shule said. “I still wanted to ask about his girlfriend.”

The late-night chat in Dorm 519 ended early with Jiang Rong falling asleep.

The next morning.

When Jiang Rong woke up, he felt uncomfortable—he was cold.

He thought it might be because the school’s heating had been turned off and the dorm temperature had dropped.

Yao Shule and Li Yizhou rarely managed to get up this early, and the three of them went to the cafeteria together.

Jiang Rong looked listless the entire way. The smell of the meat sauce in Li Yizhou’s mixed noodles made him nauseous.

Thinking Jiang Rong hadn’t slept well, He Siming got him a bowl of porridge and some light side dishes.

Jiang Rong ate a few bites and then stopped.

He Siming didn’t think much of it, assuming it was just lingering morning sickness.

After two classes, Jiang Rong felt even colder. He was wearing the same thick sweater and coat as yesterday.

When he lacked pheromones, his body would feel slightly warm—not like this.

As soon as class ended, He Siming was called out into the hallway by the teacher to discuss something.

By the third class, Jiang Rong was still enduring it. His head started to spin. Yao Shule and Lin Nana’s voices chatting about forum gossip echoed in his ears.

His head felt so dizzy.

He propped his head up with his hand, but it was still spinning.

He tried to lift his hand to tap Yao Shule, only to realize he had no strength at all. With a dull thud, he collapsed onto the desk.

No one noticed at first.

It wasn’t until class resumed that Yao Shule tried to wake Jiang Rong and realized he was lying there asleep. Jiang Rong was always diligent in class and kept a regular schedule—he never slept during breaks.

“Rongrong, class is starting. Wake up.” Yao Shule shook him twice, but he didn’t wake up.

Something felt wrong. Yao Shule touched his forehead.
“Oh my god—you’ve got a fever!” He turned and shouted, “Li Yizhou, Jiang Rong fainted! Take him to the infirmary, quick!”

The surrounding students heard the commotion.

Li Yizhou stood up immediately, and together they supported Jiang Rong. Jiang Rong was semi-conscious, but his head was spinning badly, his whole body weak, as if all the blood had been drained from him.

He had only recently become an Omega, and this was his first pregnancy—he had no experience at all. It felt awful.

“I’ll carry him to the infirmary,” Li Yizhou said. “Help me support him.”

Just then, He Siming happened to walk over and heard someone say that a student had fainted. He saw Yao Shule and others helping Jiang Rong up, preparing to let Li Yizhou carry him.

He Siming immediately pushed aside the students who wanted to help.

“Li Yizhou, move!”

His blood felt like it was rushing backward. He didn’t know why Jiang Rong had fainted, but he knew they needed to go to the hospital—now.

Li Yizhou was about to say that he could carry him just fine, when he saw He Siming already scoop Jiang Rong up in his arms and rush out of the classroom.

Yao Shule and Li Yizhou followed quickly. The other students were stunned.

“Where are you taking Jiang Rong?” Yao Shule asked.

“The infirmary,” He Siming said, forcing himself to stay calm. “Li Yizhou, go to the infirmary now and find the old Chinese medicine doctor. Tell him Dr. Liu’s special patient has fainted.”

“Got it, I’ll go right now!” Li Yizhou ran off immediately.

Yao Shule asked again, “Why did he suddenly faint?”

“I don’t know,” He Siming said, his entire body tense.

He ran while holding Jiang Rong, and Yao Shule realized he couldn’t even keep up.

A passerby, seeing the pale-faced campus heartthrob rushing to the infirmary with someone in his arms, even recorded a video.

When they reached the infirmary, the old Chinese medicine doctor and Li Yizhou were already waiting at the door.

“Put him on the bed first,” the doctor said.

He Siming gently laid Jiang Rong down. Jiang Rong’s brow was tightly furrowed.

The doctor quickly made a diagnosis.
“He has a fever—38.5 degrees Celsius. His situation is special. Start with physical cooling. I’ll put a fever patch on him. You, kid, wipe his body.”

“I can help wipe him too,” Yao Shule said.

He Siming’s face was extremely grim.
“No need. You go back to class.”

The old doctor knew the two students probably didn’t know the specifics—after all, it involved a male pregnancy—so he helped He Siming usher them out.

“Too many people crowding here isn’t good. The air won’t circulate, and it’s bad for the patient’s breathing.”

“If you need us later, make sure you call,” Yao Shule said.

Seeing that He Siming was even more anxious than they were, the two of them felt reassured and returned to class.

After they left, He Siming followed the doctor’s instructions and helped Jiang Rong cool down physically.

The doctor brought warm water for him to wipe Jiang Rong’s body.

“During pregnancy, you have to pay close attention to temperature changes. His immunity is definitely lower than normal. Make sure he stays warm. After you finish wiping him, I’ll give him two acupuncture needles—his fever will go down faster.”

“Thank you, Elder Liu,” He Siming said, his nerves easing slightly.

The doctor checked Jiang Rong’s pulse again.
“Does he usually monitor his blood sugar? It’s definitely a bit low today.”

“We usually measure it at home,” He Siming said. “But he stayed in the dorm last night and didn’t check it this morning.”

“I can tell he’s been physically fatigued lately,” the doctor said. “But his pulse is smooth and strong—the fetus is healthy.”

“He does regular prenatal checkups,” He Siming said. “Dr. Liu said the baby is developing very well.”

“I know,” the doctor said. “She mentioned the surgery to me the past couple of days. Has she not had time to tell you about it yet?”

Seeing the doctor’s serious expression, He Siming asked, “Is there a problem?”

“There’s no final conclusion yet,” the doctor said. “But it should be related to his body structure. I don’t know the exact details either.”

He Siming nodded to show he understood.

He was still extremely nervous—his hands trembled as he wiped Jiang Rong’s body.

He had been fine last night. How did he end up with a fever this morning?

“Don’t be nervous,” the doctor said. “Fever during pregnancy is common. His case isn’t severe.”

“But he fainted,” He Siming said.

“Did he eat breakfast?” the doctor asked.

“He had a few sips of porridge.”

“That’s basically skipping breakfast,” the doctor said. “His blood sugar dropped. No matter what, he has to eat something in the future.”

“I’ll make sure of it,” He Siming said.

The doctor brought two bottles of glucose and had He Siming feed them to Jiang Rong.

Jiang Rong remained groggy, but he no longer felt cold—just weak.

When he opened his eyes, he saw He Siming sitting by the bed, his face terrible, as if he was about to cry.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jiang Rong asked.

He Siming’s voice was hoarse.
“Why aren’t you asking what’s wrong with you?”

“I think I had a fever,” Jiang Rong said.

“Yes,” He Siming replied. “You had a fever—and low blood sugar.”

“I feel a bit better now,” Jiang Rong said.

“Elder Liu gave you acupuncture and a fever patch, and I wiped you down,” He Siming said. “If your fever hadn’t gone down, I would’ve—”

“You would’ve what?” Jiang Rong asked.

He Siming took a breath.
“Spanked you.”

Jiang Rong could tell he was trying to lighten the mood, but his expression wasn’t relaxed at all. With what little strength he had, he reached out and held He Siming’s hand.

Softly, he said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t take good care of my body and made you worry.”

Seeing him like this, how could He Siming still be angry? Yet he stubbornly said, “I wasn’t worried at all.”

Jiang Rong smiled faintly and sat up on the hospital bed.
“Can we go home now?”

He Siming held his shoulders.
“Elder Liu said your fever has gone down. We can go straight home. Let’s go.”

He had truly been terrified today.

From the day he met Jiang Rong, he only knew that Jiang Rong suffered from pheromone issues. He had seen him uncomfortable before, but that was a physiological need. This time was real illness, and He Siming blamed himself.

They should have gone home last night. The school heating had been shut off—at home, they could have turned on the floor heating.

He buried those emotions. After they got home, Jiang Rong could only rest in bed, while He Siming silently went to prepare food.

Jiang Rong reported his safety in the group chat, and everyone expressed concern.

He hadn’t expected that fainting would bring so much care from his classmates. Compared to his original world, he felt even more warmth here.

He was just feeling especially miserable today.

Before pregnancy, he had never experienced low blood sugar. After getting pregnant—starting from that hiking trip—it had become easy for him to develop hypoglycemia.

He Siming made him a light lunch. Not long after eating, Jiang Rong fell asleep.

He Siming went nowhere that afternoon and stayed home guarding him.

He was still worried about what Elder Liu had mentioned in the morning regarding the surgery. With no conclusion yet, his heart was in turmoil.

When he called Xu Mingzhuo, his hands were trembling.

“Uncle,” He Siming said, “Jiang Rong had a fever today.”

“Is he okay now?” Xu Mingzhuo asked.

“The fever’s gone. Thankfully, Elder Liu was at the infirmary,” He Siming said. “He told me the surgery might need further discussion. What’s going on?”

“I know about this,” Xu Mingzhuo said. “We are indeed discussing the surgery, and we didn’t intend to hide it from you. After very careful study, the specialists found that his reproductive cavity is different from a normal person’s. Others only need a cesarean section, but he has an additional reproductive cavity protecting the uterus. How to open that cavity is the issue. Dr. Liu and the experts have never encountered this before, and there may be risks during surgery.”

He Siming frowned deeply.
“Why did they say before that the reproductive cavity was normal, but now say it’s dangerous?”

“Because the fetus was too small to see it clearly before,” Xu Mingzhuo said. “Now that it’s grown, the reproductive cavity is obvious—it’s like a protective shell.”

“How big is the risk?” He Siming asked.

“There could be massive bleeding during surgery,” Xu Mingzhuo said.

All the blood in He Siming’s body seemed to freeze.

He knew what massive bleeding meant.

It meant a risk of death.

When Jiang Rong woke up, he had regained much of his strength. Not seeing He Siming in the bedroom, he found him in the living room instead.

He Siming was sitting there with his elbows on his knees, his head buried in his hands.

Hearing Jiang Rong come out, He Siming looked up at him, his eyes rimmed red.

Jiang Rong didn’t know what was wrong, but he stepped forward and hugged him anyway.

“He Siming,” he asked softly, “what’s wrong?”
