Chapter 91: Crisis Resolved
However, a powerful beam of light shone down from atop the city wall. The group turned around and saw little Yu Dongdong climbing onto a stool that Zheng Yaohua had ordered someone to bring over. Standing on tiptoe, he struggled to hold up the somewhat heavy high-powered flashlight, using its beam to indicate the direction in which the Level-Four zombie was fleeing.
“Well done!” Zheng Jiahe laughed loudly. He hefted the massive stone in his hands and swept it viciously through the zombies surging in from all sides. After taking the ability-enhancing potion, his strength was boundless—any zombie struck by the stone had every bone in its body shattered, instantly losing all combat capability.
With a momentum like a lone warrior holding off ten thousand foes, Zheng Jiahe carved a bloody path through the densely packed zombie horde, charging straight toward the direction Dongdong had illuminated.
Wu Jing did not hesitate either and followed close behind. She transformed into mist, allowing her to move effortlessly through the mass of zombies. Guided by the beam of light, she quickly locked onto the legless Level-Four zombie.
“Roar—roar—roar!”
Sensing danger as the humans closed in again, the Level-Four zombie let out another shrill scream. Several zombies gathered around it once more burst with red light in their eyes.
But Cheng Qi and Cheng Jiao’s wind blades and electric arcs arrived at the same instant, harvesting the lives of those zombies before they could self-destruct.
“ROAR—ROAR—ROAR!!!!”
The Level-Four zombie fled again, shrieking incessantly. Wherever it passed, zombies’ eyes began to glow red.
No matter how fast Cheng Qi and Cheng Jiao were, they couldn’t deal with so many zombies at once. Some still managed to explode.
The massive shockwaves from the explosions forced the group back again, but Song Chengshu raised a water barrier in time, blocking all the impact. No one was injured.
Wu Jing’s mist-formed body, however, was blown apart once more. By the time she re-formed, the Level-Four zombie had vanished yet again.
Still, none of them were worried—because atop the city wall, they still had their secret weapon, capable of locking onto the Level-Four zombie.
This was the first time Yu Dongdong had used his psychic ability for such a long duration. The color had drained from his little face, and beads of sweat slowly appeared on his forehead, yet he clenched his teeth and persevered. With his small arms, he held the flashlight tightly, guiding the older brothers to the Level-Four zombie’s position.
Once again, they gave chase.
The Level-Four zombie, having lost both legs and relying solely on its arms to move, possessed no other means of attack beyond its voice. Realizing it had been locked onto yet again, it panicked.
At the same time, it noticed the white beam that kept tracking it. Keenly, it realized that its position was being exposed again and again because of that light.
“Roar—roar—roar!”
It screamed, drawing more zombies to block its pursuers, while using their cover to glance toward the city wall.
Its blood-red eyes fixed on that small, thin figure.
“ROAR!!!”
With a long, drawn-out shriek, a tall zombie suddenly appeared from nowhere and charged toward the city wall, its eyes blazing with dangerous red light.
The soldiers atop the wall had been closely watching the battle below and knew all too well that zombies with glowing red eyes would self-destruct. Zheng Yaohua immediately gave the order for all shooters to concentrate fire on that zombie!
However, it turned out to be an evolved zombie. Not only was it incredibly fast, but a layer of stone-like armor gradually formed over its body—exactly like what Zhang Shuoliang had done earlier.
The pea bullets Su Ruizhe had provided could shatter that stone shell, but they couldn’t kill it outright.
In the blink of an eye, the evolved zombie had reached the base of the wall. Its entire head was now enveloped in red light—moments away from exploding.
“Dongdong!!!”
At the sight of the red-glowing zombie, the group no longer cared about the Level-Four zombie. They immediately turned and sprinted toward the city wall.
They had to kill it before it self-destructed! It was an evolved zombie—if its crystal core exploded, the blast would be several times more powerful than that of an ordinary zombie! If it went off, not only Yu Dongdong, but even the city wall itself could be blown apart!
Yet their speed was still no match for the evolved zombie. The red glow spread across its entire body—it was about to explode…
Suddenly, a black blur streaked through the air and lunged straight onto the evolved zombie’s head.
The next instant, the red light on the zombie abruptly went out.
Zhan Yun’s team: ???
The Northwest Base’s people: ???
What just happened? What on earth was that?
All they saw was the evolved zombie’s head bursting apart in an instant, followed by its body collapsing stiffly to the ground. Beyond that, they saw nothing. Everyone was utterly baffled.
“Meow~”
A soft kitten’s cry rang out. Looking down, they saw a palm-sized kitten rapidly climbing up the city wall. Its tiny paws were like steel grappling hooks, easily digging into the hard surface of the wall, moving across the towering structure as if on level ground.
The kitten held an orange-red crystal core in its mouth. The core still emitted a faint red glow, but the light quickly dimmed—until it vanished completely.
The people of the Northwest Base stared in disbelief. Had this tiny kitten just killed that zombie?!
The kitten soon climbed onto the wall, retracted its sharp claws, and leapt lightly onto its little owner’s foot. Clutching his clothes, it climbed up onto Yu Dongdong’s shoulder.
The kitten rubbed its head against Dongdong’s cheek, then proudly deposited the crystal core into his hand.
“Thank you, Xiao Hei,” Yu Dongdong said, dimples appearing on his small face as he nuzzled the kitten’s head in return.
“Meow~”
Xiao Hei let out a soft, satisfied sound, narrowed its eyes, and settled into the hollow of Dongdong’s neck, not moving again.
Good heavens! That cat actually belongs to this little kid?!
This team from the Southern Base is downright monstrous! Not only is everyone a high-level ability user—even a four- or five-year-old child has abilities—and the combat power of the cat he raises is stronger than all of them combined…
The people of the Northwest Base felt both joy and sorrow. Joy, because the team sent from the Southern Base was clearly incredibly powerful, meaning they might truly have a slim chance of survival this time. Sorrow, because… their base of over a hundred thousand people couldn’t even compare to a single cat.
Yu Dongdong raised the high-powered flashlight once more, locking onto the Level-Four zombie’s position again.
“Hmph! Let’s see where you can run now!” Zheng Jiahe swung his massive stone and charged toward the Level-Four zombie at full stride.
“ROAR—ROAR—ROAR!!!!!!!!”
Sensing an overwhelming danger, the Level-Four zombie unleashed an extremely sharp scream, reaching at least 140 decibels.
This time, not only did the surrounding zombies’ eyes glow red—even its own eyes did as well.
A Level-Four zombie on the brink of advancing to Level Five self-destructing, combined with numerous ordinary zombies exploding at the same time—the resulting blast would likely rival a missile.
“Kill it!!”
Everyone unleashed their abilities toward the Level-Four zombie as if energy cost nothing, but shielded by other zombies, they still couldn’t hit its small, low-profile body.
At last, Wu Jing could no longer stand by. She manifested her physical form, grabbed a sharp stone from the ground, and stabbed fiercely toward the Level-Four zombie’s head.
Unfortunately, the bone strength of a Level-Four zombie was far beyond that of ordinary zombies. If it had been Zheng Jiahe, he might have injured it—but Wu Jing had no advantage in strength. That strike didn’t even pierce the zombie’s scalp.
The Level-Four zombie seemed further stimulated. Its shriek rose several more octaves, and the red light spread even faster.
At that extremely critical moment, a not-very-pleasant flute sound suddenly came from somewhere unknown. It was neither piercing nor shrill, but long and lingering—yet it forcefully suppressed the Level-Four zombie’s scream.
The Level-Four zombie was like a chicken whose neck had been grabbed—its shrill scream cut off abruptly, and only a faint wheezing sound could barely escape its throat…
The defenses Zhang Shuoliang had previously built for Zhan Yun and Su Ruizhe had already been shattered. Zhan Yun was holding a purplish-red flute in his hand—the tuneless flute sound had come from him. Beside Su Ruizhe, a beige corn cannon had appeared at some point, its long barrel aimed straight at the Level-Four zombie.
The piercing screams from the Level-Four zombie had filled Su Ruizhe with an intense sense of danger. Having recovered a little strength, he ignored his body’s weakness and swallowed another bottle of ability-enhancing potion, forcing all the power within him to erupt. Only then did he manage to create that flute transformed from a beet, as well as the corn cannon.
“Everyone, get back!” Su Ruizhe shouted. Then he pressed the firing button. With a deafening boom, the Level-Four zombie and all the zombies around it were blasted into flying ash.
With the Level-Four zombie gone and its scream no longer triggering them, the remaining zombies’ self-detonations immediately stopped, and they became scattered and disorganized.
From then on, without a high-level zombie to command them, no new zombies would be drawn in. The horde—already mostly slaughtered by Zhan Yun’s team—no longer posed a real threat, and under the concentrated fire of the Northwest Base, it was quickly wiped out.
The crisis facing the Northwest Base was finally resolved.
However, after killing the Level-Four zombie, everyone in Zhan Yun’s team fell into a state of extreme exhaustion due to the aftereffects of the ability potions. Only Su Ruizhe kept using plant-based weapons to suppress the zombies that tried to pounce on them.
Zheng Yaohua immediately dispatched dozens of ability users out of the city to provide support, and at last managed to escort them back into the base without a single injury.
Although the members of Zhan Yun’s team were all carried back, barely able to stand, the people of the Northwest Base still looked at them with eyes full of reverence and admiration.
