Chapter 89: The Zombie Siege
At last, the steel gates were shut. After a massive steel bolt, fifty centimeters thick, was slid into place, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“Who are you people?” the soldiers of the Northwest Base asked about the origins of Zhan Yun’s group.
“We’re from the Southern Base. I have urgent matters to discuss with your leadership. May I ask where your base’s commander is?”
The reputation of the Southern Base—famed for developing detoxifying agents and ability-enhancing drugs—was well known at the Northwest Base. They also knew that their leaders had dispatched a team to the Southern Base to request aid. What they hadn’t expected was that the Southern Base would send so few people—and that this group even included women and children.
Still, since they were from the Southern Base, they couldn’t be treated lightly. The soldier straightened and said solemnly, “Please follow me.”
Zhan Yun instructed the others to wait where they were, then followed the soldier up onto the city wall.
On the wall, Zhan Yun met the middle-aged officer who had earlier given the order to open the gates. His name was Zheng Yaohua, a major, and he was currently the highest-ranking commander of the Northwest Base.
Zhan Yun briefly explained their background and expressed their willingness to help the Northwest Base resist this wave of the zombie tide.
“Although I’m very grateful that your base is willing to lend us a hand at such a critical moment,” Zheng Yaohua said, standing atop the wall and casting a subtle glance at Su Ruizhe and the others below, “please forgive my bluntness—but is this really all the people you have?”
Zhan Yun smiled faintly, unconcerned by the skepticism in Zheng Yaohua’s words. “We are an elite team dispatched by the Southern Base. Don’t let appearances fool you—every one of them is an ability user of Level Two or above. My partner and I are both Level Three.”
Zheng Yaohua: …
He honestly didn’t know whether to marvel at the overwhelming strength of Zhan Yun’s team, or complain about Zhan Yun still managing to show off his relationship at a time like this.
“So what do you plan to do? How do you need us to cooperate?” Zheng Yaohua asked. He did have some faith in their strength; otherwise, this team wouldn’t have been able to break through the zombie encirclement and enter the base.
“You’ll use your firearms to draw the zombies’ attention. All attack-type ability users in the base should take to the walls to fight. My team will find a way to locate the leader and kill it.” As the saying goes, capture the bandits by first capturing their chief. To break the deadlock of a zombie siege wasn’t actually that difficult—kill the leading Level Four zombie, and with no new zombies being drawn in, the horde would naturally be worn down and eliminated.
“The leader?! Zombies have leaders?!” Zheng Yaohua asked in disbelief.
“That’s right. High-level zombies can command lower-level ones. We suspect that the one orchestrating this siege is that Level Four zombie.”
At the mention of a Level Four zombie, Zheng Yaohua’s expression changed drastically. The only Level Three ability user their base had once possessed had been killed by a Level Four zombie.
“That’s a Level Four zombie! Are you sure you can handle it? We’ve already lost a Level Three ability user to it!”
“Whether we can or not, we have to try,” Zhan Yun said calmly. “We not only have detoxifying agents and ability-enhancing drugs, but my partner’s ability is rather special. He can weaponize plants, transforming them into a unique kind of weapon that can deal massive damage to zombies.”
“Then we’ll be counting on you,” Zheng Yaohua said. At this point, he could only treat a dead horse as if it were alive. With tens of thousands of zombies already surrounding the base, it was death either way—better to listen to them and take a gamble. Perhaps there was still a slim chance of survival.
“Alright.”
Zheng Yaohua immediately issued orders for all machine gunners and artillery crews to prepare for combat, and requisitioned every registered attack-type ability user in the base to man the city walls.
“Roar—roar—roar!” Outside the base, waves of zombie howls rose and fell. The zombies crowded beneath the walls, clawing and pounding at them in a frenzy, trying to smash through the thick fortifications so they could rush inside and gorge themselves on food.
Some of the zombies at the back grew impatient, climbing over those in front and leaping upward. A few even came close to snagging the top of the wall with their claws.
“Open fire! Fire immediately!” The terrifying sight made the soldiers defending the walls gasp in fear, and they shouted the order at once.
Gunfire erupted in rapid succession, and the artillery began bombarding the densest clusters of zombies, but the results were minimal.
All earth-type ability users in the base were gathered to reinforce the walls, to prevent them from collapsing under the incessant pounding and ramming of tens of thousands of zombies.
Fire-type ability users continuously hurled fireballs into the horde. Because zombies were heavily decomposed, their bodies were often coated in a layer of corpse oil. When fireballs struck them, they ignited instantly. Zombies felt no pain and didn’t know to beat out the flames on their bodies, so many were burned to death just like that.
Every attack-type ability user fought desperately, unleashing their powers at the zombie tide. With the city under siege, there was no breaking out—only by killing zombies relentlessly could they carve out a path to survival. Any moment of hesitation would mean certain death.
Strength-type and speed-type ability users wielded their favored cold weapons, standing atop the walls and engaging the zombies in close-quarters combat.
Zhan Yun ordered the rest of his team up onto the walls as well, joining the fight.
In an instant, the battlefield became ferociously intense.
Zhan Yun took a large bag of pea bullets from Su Ruizhe and handed it to Zheng Yaohua, instructing him to distribute them to the soldiers with the best marksmanship.
He told Zheng Yaohua that with these bullets, there was no need to aim for the head—hitting the body alone was enough to kill a zombie.
In addition, he advised them to prioritize zombies in the horde that were less decomposed and moved more nimbly. Those were likely evolved zombies, far more dangerous than ordinary ones and capable of causing greater damage to the city walls.
Zheng Yaohua took one look at the emerald-green bullets and instinctively knew they were anything but ordinary. After thanking him, he immediately had them handed out.
The effect of the pea bullets was almost instantaneous. Without needing to aim for the head, soldiers could kill zombies just by hitting their bodies, greatly increasing firing speed and accuracy.
“Dongdong, see if you can find a zombie that’s different from the others in the horde,” Zhan Yun said, assigning Yu Dongdong an extremely difficult task after arranging everything else.
Though Yu Dongdong was only a little over four years old, he was already a Level Two psychic-type ability user. His mental detection range extended to a hundred meters, just enough to cover most of the zombies.
“Okay,” Yu Dongdong nodded obediently.
“Now it’s our turn,” Zhan Yun said, looking at Su Ruizhe.
Su Ruizhe nodded lightly in response.
The two of them each took out a bottle of ability-enhancing drug and downed it in one gulp. Then, hand in hand, they jumped straight off the city wall.
“What are they doing?! Are they trying to get themselves killed?!” Everyone stared in shock at the pair’s astonishing move.
However, the instant Zhan Yun landed, he activated his gravity ability. Within a ten-meter radius centered on him, gravity increased twentyfold. All zombies caught in that range were instantly crushed into bloody pulp by the terrifying force.
Su Ruizhe, on the other hand, was completely unaffected by the gravity. He reached into the backpack on his back and pulled out a small yellow gourd. Holding it in his left hand, he swiftly transformed it into a large-caliber, earth-yellow firearm.
The next moment, Su Ruizhe pulled the trigger. The muzzle erupted with raging flames, incinerating all nearby zombies. The flames from the flamethrower were far more destructive than those of ordinary fire-type ability users—any zombie touched by the fire would be reduced to ash within five seconds.
With Zhan Yun’s absolute gravity preventing any zombies from approaching, and Su Ruizhe’s flame weapon delivering overwhelming firepower, the two formed the ultimate combination of absolute defense and absolute offense.
The sheer number of zombies was staggering. Finding a single Level Four zombie among tens of thousands was no easy task. The base’s ammunition was limited, as were the stamina and abilities of the ability users. Fighting a prolonged war of attrition against such numbers was the most foolish option possible.
That Level Four zombie was capable of commanding lower-level zombies, leading them to suspect it possessed a degree of intelligence—able to seek advantage and avoid danger. That was why it had been hiding within the horde, refusing to reveal itself.
They had forcibly boosted their abilities to Level Four using drugs precisely so they could kill as many zombies as possible in the shortest time, forcing that Level Four zombie to expose itself.
Their plan worked. Su Ruizhe sprayed flames into the horde while continuously throwing cherry bombs. With just the two of them, they killed nearly three thousand zombies in a mere ten minutes. The ground at their feet was carpeted with scorched ash and rolling crystal cores.
However, the enhancement from the ability drug only lasted half an hour, and once it wore off there would be serious side effects. They had to end this quickly and kill as many zombies as they could!
Sure enough, under their overwhelming assault, one zombie finally revealed a flaw.
Ordinary zombies had no intelligence; driven purely by instinct, they lunged and bit at prey without fear or avoidance. A Level Four zombie, however, was completely different.
It knew how to seek advantage and avoid danger. When all the other zombies surged forward, that single zombie quietly retreated a little…
In that instant, Yu Dongdong noticed the strange zombie and immediately passed the information to Zheng Jiahe, who was guarding him.
Zheng Jiahe was overjoyed and shouted down at once, “Brother Zhan, Xiao Zhe—we’ve found it!”
