Chapter 107: The Farmer and the Snake — Part One
The convoy continued heading north, but off-road vehicles were ultimately unsuited for traveling in such heavy snowfall. Before long, one of them stalled and broke down. With no other choice, Zhan Yun and the others could only transfer the seven weakened girls onto the snow cruiser.
They cleared out the beds in the rest area for the girls to sleep on, while they themselves squeezed into the storage room to rest. In any case, they should soon run into the Wan City troops heading south, at which point they could hand these girls over to them.
Considering that the girls had gone hungry for many days and were extremely weak, Su Ruizhe deliberately cooked some easily digestible plain rice porridge, added a bit of soy sauce and pork floss, and went with Cheng Jiao to deliver the food to them.
“Su Ruizhe…” Unexpectedly, the youngest of the girls actually recognized him.
“You are…?” Since his rebirth, Su Ruizhe’s entire heart had been focused on Zhan Yun alone. He generally didn’t pay much attention to women, so he had very little impression of this girl.
“I—I’m Xu Jiani!” The girl put on a pitiful expression.
At that, Su Ruizhe really did feel she looked somewhat familiar, but he just couldn’t recall who she was.
“Hey, Xiao Zhe, isn’t this that female classmate who came to the base before trying to claim kinship with you?” Cheng Jiao, with her good memory, recognized her immediately.
This girl was precisely that so-called “classmate” of Su Ruizhe whom they had met at the southern base before. Cheng Jiao hadn’t had a good impression of her at all. She’d run off crying afterward—how had she ended up at the Lin City base, and in such a state?
With Cheng Jiao’s reminder, Su Ruizhe also remembered. It was just that his experiences as a classmate with this girl belonged to a previous life as far as he was concerned. Too much time had passed, and since he didn’t pay attention to girls, his impression of Xu Jiani was very faint.
Still, they had been classmates after all. Su Ruizhe offered a few polite words of concern, then took two soft candies out of his pocket and gave them to her before leaving with Cheng Jiao.
The other girls looked at the candies in Xu Jiani’s hand with envy. They didn’t even remember how long it had been since they’d tasted sweets. Still, it was only a momentary envy; they soon looked away and continued drinking their porridge.
Xu Jiani carefully unwrapped the candy and put it into her mouth. The sweet flavor bloomed across her tongue. She slowly closed her eyes, hiding the darkness in their depths.
They spent the day traveling, and at night they casually found an open area to park and rest. That night, the ones on night watch were Zheng Jiahe, Cheng Jiao, and Su Ruizhe. None of the three could drive, so they rested during the day and took turns standing guard at night.
Cheng Jiao and Zheng Jiahe stayed in the driver’s cabin, while Su Ruizhe guarded the central aisle. After all, there were outsiders on the vehicle—being cautious was never wrong.
Cheng Jiao could chat with Zheng Jiahe, while Su Ruizhe, though alone in the aisle, wasn’t bored. He was holding a phone he’d borrowed from Zheng Jiahe, playing a plant-themed game, hoping to find more inspiration for using plants in combat. The game itself was quite fun, so he played happily with a power bank in hand.
In the middle of the night, Su Ruizhe heard extremely light footsteps and immediately became alert. He looked up and saw Xu Jiani supporting herself against the wall, her steps unsteady as she slowly made her way toward him.
She was wearing only a cotton slip nightdress, with a pair of disposable cotton hotel slippers on her feet. All of it had been collected earlier by Su Ruizhe from a supermarket—seven sets in seven colors, just right for the seven girls. The snow cruiser’s heating was sufficient, so even dressed so lightly, the girls wouldn’t feel cold.
Su Ruizhe put his phone back into his pocket, stood up, and walked toward Xu Jiani, asking softly, “Do you need something?”
“I came out to use the toilet. I’m a bit thirsty—do you have any water?” Xu Jiani asked weakly, her eyes glossy and moist.
“Yes. Wait a moment.” Su Ruizhe turned and went to the kitchen. The kitchen was very small, with little more than an induction cooktop and a few cabinets. He took out a bottle of mineral water from a low cabinet, then thought for a moment and grabbed a small bottle of Wahaha as well, handing both to Xu Jiani.
After all, they had been classmates. He hadn’t recognized her either time, which really was a bit awkward. And given what she had just gone through, Su Ruizhe felt he should take a bit more care of her. “Drink the Wahaha before you go back in.”
Su Ruizhe felt that since Xu Jiani was staying with the other six girls, treating her too specially wouldn’t be appropriate. That was why he wanted her to finish it here before going back. It was only a small bottle—just a few sips.
“Thank you…” A faint blush appeared on Xu Jiani’s delicate face as she took the Wahaha from Su Ruizhe, inserted the straw, and slowly drank.
The two of them stood facing each other. If neither spoke, the silence was rather awkward.
So Su Ruizhe asked how she had made it from the southern base to the Lin City base.
He shouldn’t have asked. As soon as he did, Xu Jiani began to cry softly.
After the apocalypse, Xu Jiani had depended on her father for survival. Her father registered at the base for a brick-carrying job, earning five work points a day. But just lodging for the two of them cost two work points. The food they could exchange for the remaining three points had to be shared between them, barely enough to keep them half full.
Even before reaching the southern base, they’d rarely eaten their fill. Her father doted on her and always gave her more food. On top of that, he had to work, and soon he collapsed from exhaustion.
Unable to continue working, her father had no choice but to move to the tent area. But the tent area was poorly managed. One night, someone actually snuck into her tent, covered her mouth, and…
Afterward, the man threw her a packet of biscuits. She didn’t dare tell her father and could only cry in secret. Later, as her father’s illness grew worse, she had no choice—just to survive, she could only do that kind of despicable work.
Because she was pretty, one man wanted to keep her. He was a strength-type ability user—tall, well-built, and not bad-looking—with a few underlings. Xu Jiani thought it over and became his woman.
But that man was also lazy and unwilling to work every day at the southern base. Hearing that the Lin City base treated ability users very well, he discussed it with his brothers and decided to go there.
After arriving at the Lin City base, she realized it was nothing like she’d imagined. The division between ability users and ordinary people was extremely clear. That man, as an ordinary strength-type ability user, lived like an emperor—as long as he obeyed the base boss, he could have whatever he wanted, whether food or women.
Xu Jiani had a delicate temperament and a sickly father in tow. The man quickly grew tired of her. After being abandoned, she could only return to that kind of work to make a living.
On the surface, she looked glamorous and beautiful, but in reality, her body was already ruined.
How could she possibly bring herself to say such a filthy past out loud…?
“What’s wrong? Don’t cry…” Seeing Xu Jiani suddenly burst into tears, Su Ruizhe was immediately at a loss.
Xu Jiani cried as she threw herself into Su Ruizhe’s arms, her arms coiling around him like a nimble snake.
“Thank you for saving me. Thank you for treating me so well. I have nothing to repay you with, so I can only…” She spoke softly, her breath fragrant. At some point, she had already slipped out of her nightdress. Now she was completely naked in Su Ruizhe’s arms.
“Y-you—you, let go!” Su Ruizhe reached out to push her away, but the slick skin beneath his palm startled him. In that moment, he didn’t even know where to put his hands.
“I know you’re an ability user now—you must look down on someone like me… But I have nothing else to repay you with…” As she spoke, she stretched her head forward, trying to kiss Su Ruizhe’s lips, one hand reaching toward his waistband.
“Don’t do this!” Su Ruizhe grabbed Xu Jiani’s wrist, anger flashing in his eyes.
At that moment, a furious shout suddenly rang out:
“What are you doing?!!!”
