Chapter 42: Soaked Through
Ying Kongtu had just been about to close the door, change into outdoor clothes, and go up the mountain to check on the pigs.
The door of the guest room next door opened, and Wen Zhongshan’s tall figure appeared outside. “Kongtu?”
“Did I wake you?” Ying Kongtu glanced back at him and said hurriedly, “Go back to sleep. I’m going up the mountain to check on the pigs.”
Wen Zhongshan said, “I’ll go with you.”
“Better not. You don’t have suitable clothes. On such a cold, rainy day, you might catch a cold if you go out.”
“I…” Wen Zhongshan hesitated for a moment.
Ying Kongtu thought he was going to say something like he would go back and change, and was just about to persuade him, only to hear him say, “Can I borrow your clothes?”
Ying Kongtu’s eyes widened slightly.
Wen Zhongshan said hesitantly, “Autumn and winter clothes are looser. I should be able to wear them.”
Wen Zhongshan’s attitude was quite firm. He was not the sort of person who would knowingly let Ying Kongtu go up the mountain alone in such violent wind and rain.
Ying Kongtu thought it over, then stopped trying to dissuade him. Instead, he went back to his room, opened the wardrobe, and quickly grabbed a set of outdoor shell clothing.
“This set is fairly large. Try it.” Ying Kongtu hurriedly stuffed it into his hands. “I’ll change too.”
Ying Kongtu changed into a full set of outdoor gear and met Wen Zhongshan, who had also changed into a full set of outdoor gear, in the living room.
“Here, a hat.” Ying Kongtu gave Wen Zhongshan a hat, then stuffed a raincoat into his hands. “It’s inconvenient to carry umbrellas. We’ll wear raincoats up. Put on a hat. After checking on the pigs, we’ll also have to patrol the mountain and rule out geological hazards.”
Wen Zhongshan agreed solemnly. “All right.”
He quickly put everything on.
Ying Kongtu reached out and pushed Jingwei’s furry backside, shoving it and Dart farther inside. “The wind and rain are too strong. Don’t come out. Stay obediently at home.”
The two little fellows squeezed toward the outside. “Awooo!”
Ying Kongtu grabbed Dart by the scruff, supported its bottom, picked it up, and put it into the room. “At a time like this, staying obediently at home is already a huge help.”
Soon, Ying Kongtu took a high-powered flashlight and led Wen Zhongshan up the mountain.
A winter rainy night was extremely dark.
Even the high-powered flashlight’s beam was quickly swallowed up once it shone out. It could not illuminate very far at all.
Ying Kongtu wrapped his raincoat tightly around himself and led the way ahead.
Wen Zhongshan followed silently behind him, but he kept paying attention to Ying Kongtu’s steps, ready at any moment to reach out and steady him.
The rain was heavy, and the wind was strong too.
The raindrops struck their faces, quickly soaking their faces and parts of their clothes.
Even though they were wearing full protective gear, the journey was still this difficult. It was easy to imagine how hard the pigs on the mountain must be having it.
Ying Kongtu could not help quickening his pace.
Those were the seven pigs that had once cost him all his wealth. They were also the seven pigs he had raised for more than half a year and finally gotten to the half-grown stage.
When they were nearly at the mountain, Ying Kongtu suddenly stopped and listened carefully.
Wen Zhongshan asked, “What is it?”
“Xian Niao and Tiaozhu seem to be there.” Ying Kongtu said, “I heard their voices.”
Wen Zhongshan said, “They must have seen the rain and gone to protect the pigs.”
The rain tonight was truly too heavy. Even now, the raindrops hitting their heads still went thud, thud, like a child pounding them with fists.
Ying Kongtu pressed his lips together and continued climbing upward.
Wuchuan Mountain was right behind his house. Usually, it took only five or six minutes to reach the place where the pigs were kept.
Tonight, it was raining and the night was dark. Ying Kongtu felt that the climb was exceptionally difficult.
After much effort, they finally arrived outside the pigpen. Ying Kongtu immediately saw two pairs of glowing animal eyes.
“Tiaozhu! Xian Niao!” Ying Kongtu recognized them at once. “You really are here!”
“Awooo!” Xian Niao responded.
Ying Kongtu quickly walked into the pigpen.
Brick or stone pigpens could not be built on the mountain, so he had only put up a shed. Though there was waterproof cloth above it, and the pigpen also had a door, once the wind and rain grew stronger, rainwater still blew into the pigpen.
The herd of pigs had shrunk into a corner, trembling from the cold.
The wolf king Xian Niao and Tiaozhu were blocking a spot slightly farther outside, shielding the pig herd from the wind and rain.
Ying Kongtu reached out and stroked Tiaozhu’s head, then Xian Niao’s. He could clearly feel the raindrops on their downy fur.
“You’ve really worked hard.” Ying Kongtu felt both relieved and heartbroken. He used his sleeve to wipe the rainwater from their heads. “Did you come over as soon as it started raining?”
Tiaozhu said, “Meow-aow.”
“We’re here now. You two rest.” As Ying Kongtu spoke, he gently pushed them inward.
After Tiaozhu and Xian Niao moved aside, Ying Kongtu raised the flashlight and shone it around.
He usually kept the place too tidy. There were no miscellaneous objects here at all. Now that he wanted to find something to block the rain, there was nothing available.
Ying Kongtu looked around, then took a machete from the corner of the pig shed. “Let’s go cut down two trees to block it.”
Wen Zhongshan said, “I’ll hold the flashlight.”
The two of them went into the forest in the middle of the night to cut trees.
Even under these conditions, Ying Kongtu still chose carefully. Using renewal felling, he selected two stone oaks of relatively poor quality and cut them down.
Ying Kongtu was extremely strong. When anxious, he could cut down a tree as thick as a bowl with three chops.
It took him less than five minutes to cut down both trees.
Thankfully, there was no one on the mountain in the middle of the night. Otherwise, hearing the sound of trees being chopped would have frightened them half to death.
Wen Zhongshan and Ying Kongtu each dragged one tree back.
Both trees had large crowns.
The two dragged the trees to the entrance of the pig shed and blocked it. The pig shed was immediately sealed tightly. The wind could not get in, and neither could the rain.
“All right.” Ying Kongtu breathed a sigh of relief and said to Tiaozhu and Xian Niao, “You two make do here for the night. Once the rain stops, go back to the shrine?”
He had touched them just now. Tiaozhu and Xian Niao had not really been drenched. Only some water droplets blown over by the wind had clung to their downy fur, so they should not be cold.
“Meow-aow.”
“Awooo.”
Tiaozhu and Xian Niao both agreed.
“Then we’ll go patrol the mountain first.” Ying Kongtu stroked them one by one. “Thank you for your hard work.”
Wen Zhongshan followed behind Ying Kongtu.
Ying Kongtu moved the tree crown aside, and the two walked out.
Through the curtain of rain, Ying Kongtu looked at the pitch-black mountain and said softly, “The six mountains under my name are patrolled every day. I’m certain there’s no risk of landslides there. The nearby mountains are another matter. Let’s first check the mountains with people living below them.”
Wen Zhongshan asked, “Which way do we go?”
“First, this way.” Ying Kongtu pointed in a direction. “There’s a small village at the foot of that mountain, and some elderly people still live there.”
Such heavy winter rain was far too rare.
After a long drought, the mountain body suddenly absorbed so much rain. It was easy for trouble to happen.
The two made a round.
Most of the nearby mountains were maintained quite well. Only when Ying Kongtu and Wen Zhongshan reached Xuyan Mountain, which was slightly farther away, did Ying Kongtu sense that behind a certain household, the risk of a landslide was quite high.
That household had been built against the mountain, and part of the mountain body had been dug away with an excavator.
Now that there was too much rain, the incomplete mountain body was not very stable.
At this point, Ying Kongtu had no time to be polite and directly called Pei Lejiu.
The rain was too heavy this time, and Pei Lejiu was also on duty.
As soon as he heard Ying Kongtu report the danger, he immediately said, “I’ll call someone to evacuate them right away.”
Ying Kongtu said, “All right. We’ll wait here for a while.”
“Thank you for your trouble.” Pei Lejiu said gravely, “I’ll come over immediately too.”
Ying Kongtu said, “Be careful.”
Ying Kongtu and Wen Zhongshan waited in the wind and rain for a while. Soon, nearby duty personnel came hurrying over with flashlights and raincoats.
When everyone saw that the rainwater flowing down the mountain had turned yellow, they knew there was indeed a risk of landslide. They immediately knocked on the door and woke up the household.
The family was woken in the middle of the night and still did not believe it.
Only after being persuaded for a while did they change clothes, briefly pack their things, and follow the duty personnel to the emergency shelter.
The duty personnel thanked Ying Kongtu and Wen Zhongshan, then told them to hurry back, since being outside late at night was dangerous.
The two agreed as well.
Ying Kongtu called Pei Lejiu back, then continued patrolling the mountain with Wen Zhongshan.
Wen Zhongshan was tall, had excellent stamina, and was reliable. The two of them patrolling the mountain together were much safer than an ordinary pair.
After roughly patrolling the mountains, the two returned home covered in mud and water, looking utterly disheveled. It was already past five in the morning.
Click.
Ying Kongtu turned on the light.
The light instantly illuminated the house, as though driving away the cold as well.
Ying Kongtu exhaled.
It really was too cold outside. Cold wind, cold rain—even he could hardly endure it.
“Meow.” Dart heard the movement and trotted out, sniffing Ying Kongtu and Wen Zhongshan. “Meow.”
“Awooo.” Jingwei followed behind, circling the two of them.
“Go back to your nest and sleep.” Ying Kongtu bent down and pushed Jingwei’s neck. “Hey, don’t lick. Careful, or you’ll get diarrhea.”
Ying Kongtu drove Dart and Jingwei, who were sniffing around nearby, back to rest. When he turned around and looked at Wen Zhongshan, Wen Zhongshan was looking this way.
Wen Zhongshan had just taken off his hat. His whole body was soaked, and his hair had been dampened into strands, like some kind of animal drenched by rain.
In this disheveled state, he looked unexpectedly young and extremely handsome, but he no longer carried that unapproachable air.
Ying Kongtu looked back at him. He had originally wanted to tell him to go take a shower, but his gaze paused.
“What is it?” Wen Zhongshan noticed Ying Kongtu’s gaze and asked softly.
“Wen Zhongshan.” Ying Kongtu called his full name, his eyes fixed on him. “You seem a little different today.”
“Because I got rained on?”
“No. Because you’re closer to me.” Ying Kongtu looked into his eyes, suddenly leaned forward, and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”
Wen Zhongshan’s eyes widened slightly at once.
After kissing him, Ying Kongtu smiled faintly and stepped back a little. “I’ll go get you some clothes.”
“Wait.”
Wen Zhongshan suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist.
Because they had spent half the night rushing around in winter rain, both of their hands were cold.
But after only a few seconds, Ying Kongtu felt the place where their skin touched grow warm.
Wen Zhongshan seemed to want to say something, but in the end, he still could not say it.
The two of them looked at each other from an extremely close distance.
In the end, Wen Zhongshan only leaned down slightly and placed a kiss on Ying Kongtu’s forehead.
Ying Kongtu did not refuse. He merely looked at him with a smile.
Wen Zhongshan slowly moved lower.
Their two slightly cool lips pressed together, turning into a scorching kiss.
Bang.
Ying Kongtu was pressed against the wall by Wen Zhongshan. Wen Zhongshan’s palm cupped the back of his head, so when he hit the wall, he hit it together with Wen Zhongshan’s hand.
When Ying Kongtu had kissed Wen Zhongshan, he had thought him pitiful and endearing.
Now, pressed down and kissed, Wen Zhongshan’s scorching body heat came through his slightly damp clothes. His muscles were hard, filled with the invasive presence of an adult man.
Ying Kongtu’s head was protected, but it was also controlled. His waist was held, his whole body pulled into the other man’s arms.
Between breaths, everything was Wen Zhongshan’s scent.
He had miscalculated.
Ying Kongtu was kissed until he was somewhat disheveled and could only wrap his arms around Wen Zhongshan’s shoulders.
He should not have only seen this man’s drenched, pitiful wolf-like appearance.
As expected of someone from the military.
He really knew how to seize an opportunity.
