This scene terrified all the pearl finches. They even abandoned the food on the ground, flapping their little wings as they scattered in all directions.

He knew this chick was just making things up.

Just as he was about to lecture him, Bird Dad suddenly nudged Yan Yan. “Then how did you meet him? Can you tell Dad?”

“It’s a long story,” Yan Yan summarized. “I was sent by a bad owner to big brother’s house… he was human back then. He kept me, then I suddenly turned into a human too. After a lot of things happened, we got together.”

“But dreams are the opposite of reality,” Zhima said. “In real life, a brahminy kite is a predator. It’s not your partner—if you go, you’ll die.”

Before he could figure out how, Si Jingce came to him first.

One morning, Bird Mom heard movement outside. She quickly shielded the chicks until it went quiet, then sent Bird Dad to investigate.

Bird Dad peeked out—and called back, “Come look!”

The birds crowded out—and froze.

At their entrance lay three large lotus leaves, filled with all kinds of seeds. Every single seed had been washed clean and dried, making them easy to eat.

Nearby, other birds—sparrows and finches—stood watching, too afraid to approach.

“What’s going on?” Bird Mom asked.

“That big bird brought them,” another finch said. “A sparrow asked—it said this is a betrothal gift.”

Betrothal gift?

None of the birds understood.

The sparrow added, “It said this is only a small portion. There’s more it hasn’t brought yet.”

The birds whispered among themselves.

“Whatever it is, it brought a lot of food…”
“This is mine!”

“It’s mine!” Yan Yan shouted, rushing forward.

Bird Dad stopped him. “Don’t be so reckless—what if it’s poisoned?”

Before he finished, the other chicks had already buried themselves in the seeds, eating happily.

Bird Dad: …

“Don’t eat randomly!” he rushed to pull them back—but Yan Yan had already dashed out.

Bird Mom tried a few seeds. “Seems fine.”

She glanced at Yan Yan.

Could what he said be true?

That he met this bird-turned-human in a dream and fell in love?

She hesitated, then said, “Move the seeds inside first. We’ll talk later.”

It was a massive job. If not eaten quickly, they’d sprout.

Yan Yan eagerly joined in, sneaking bites as he worked. Soon, their nest was filled.

After asking Yan Yan, Bird Dad even shared some with neighboring birds.

A feast for all.

Yan Yan wanted to slip away—but Tangyuan kept a close eye on him.

After thinking, he decided to leave a message.

His gaze fell on the lotus leaf.

Since few birds could read, he flew over and pecked out a line—

Don’t hide tomorrow. Come find me!

Then added—

Yan Yan loves you!

After finishing, Tangyuan thought he was just playing and started pecking too.

A bird nudged Yan Yan and pointed. “He’s still watching you!”

Yan Yan looked—and sure enough, the kite was hiding in the bushes, peeking.

Big brother!

Without hesitation, Yan Yan flew toward him.

Tangyuan panicked and chased after him. “Ahhh! Come quick—the rebellious phase is back!”

“What?!” Bird Dad turned—and saw Yan Yan flying away. “Come back!”

A whole flock chased after him.

Soon, they saw Yan Yan reach the kite.

To them, it was a massive predator.

Its head tilted slightly, eyes scanning the trembling birds. Instinct froze them in place.

But the recently molted pearl finch showed no fear—he flew straight toward it.

In every bird’s mind flashed one thought—

It’s over.

They couldn’t bear to look.

But in the next second—

Yan Yan dove straight into the kite’s soft white chest feathers, disappearing completely.

The kite was startled, glanced at the others, and awkwardly stepped back.

The little bird fell out—but immediately rushed forward again, burrowing into the feathers once more.
