Chapter 63: Extra — The Mochi Family (1)
Si Jingce and Yanyan rested for more than a full month.
Their livestream rooms were completely quiet, yet people still checked in daily, waiting for their return. Meanwhile, the internet had been set ablaze by Si Jingce’s engagement announcement post—everyone rushed to imitate it… showing off their own cute pets paired with jewelry.
Yanyan had already seen all kinds of posts online—birds wearing rings like crowns, cats and dogs with their owners’ gold bracelets hanging from their legs.
There were even people who dressed up their pet rocks with accessories, sticking little eyes onto them and laying them neatly in their “nests,” wrapped layer after layer in necklaces…
Yanyan immediately said he wanted a rock too. That evening, while they were out for a walk, the little pearl bird squatted by a flower bed, carefully picked his “precious rock,” washed it clean, and placed it in his bird nest. Whenever he had time, he would turn into a bird and hug the rock to sleep.
At first, it felt novel. But later, he found the rock too cold—sleeping in his big boyfriend’s arms was much more comfortable—so he left the rock in the nest.
He even asked Si Jingce to dig up another rock to keep it company.
So during this month of rest, aside from handling engagement matters, Si Jingce was also busy knitting new clothes… for one bird and two rocks in the house.
…
When it came to the engagement, Si Jingce ran into a problem.
Whether engagement or wedding, both required the presence of both families.
But Yanyan’s parents were still birds—they hadn’t turned human…
Even if they couldn’t attend the ceremony, Yanyan hadn’t seen his parents in a long time.
Si Jingce reached into the nest and scooped up the still-sleeping bird. “Yanyan, do you want to see your parents?”
The pearl bird, feathers all messy from sleep: “Chirp chirp chirp?”
Did Mom make something tasty again?
Now that they could communicate freely, there was no need for Yanyan to turn human just to talk.
“Not that,” Si Jingce smoothed his feathers. “Your bird parents.”
Then he saw the little bird freeze in his palm.
Pearl finches are usually separated from their parents at about one month old. Even then, they’re only in different cages, and sometimes the mother bird would still come over to feed Yanyan.
Then one day, when Yanyan woke up, he saw his parents being stuffed into a black cloth bag and sold away.
The little bird fell silent. He quietly flew back into his nest.
That night, Yanyan burrowed into the blanket and hugged Si Jingce. “Brother, I want to see my parents… and my brothers and sisters too.”
After being apart for so long, his parents might not even recognize him anymore—but he still wanted to try.
At the very least, he wanted to tell them that he was no longer just a little bird… he could become human now!
Si Jingce kissed him. “Alright. How many siblings do you have?”
“There were four eggs in our nest, including me. Two older brothers and one older sister.” Yanyan grinned. “Even though I hatched last, I grew the biggest!”
From birth, Yanyan had been stronger than the others—and better at grabbing food.
Si Jingce nodded. “Are we only looking for siblings from your nest? Do you want to find others too?”
Yanyan paused. “…Let’s not.”
If they tried to find all of them, who knew how long it would take.
After confirming the goal, Si Jingce began gathering clues from Yanyan.
The bird parents had been taken away by a little girl. The two older brothers were sold together to a doctor… only the sister’s whereabouts were unknown.
The entire nest consisted of beautiful beige “penguin pearl finches.”
He immediately posted a “lost bird” notice on Weibo. It attracted quite a bit of attention, and netizens helped repost it. Soon enough, someone actually came to the door.
Yanyan’s former owner.
When the doorbell rang, Si Jingce happened to be busy in the kitchen, so Yanyan went to open the door.
The person stood there holding a bunch of bags, staring blankly at the unfamiliar boy in front of him.
“Hello.” The former owner snapped out of it and greeted him politely. “Does Si Jingce still live here?”
Bang—
The door slammed shut so hard the house number trembled. The former owner heard the boy shout at the top of his lungs:
“Brother! The bird trafficker is here!”
Former owner: …?
Si Jingce came out of the kitchen to see Yanyan gesturing wildly. “That bird seller—the trafficker—came to the door!”
“Brother,” Yanyan said seriously, “let’s take him down together.”
Yanyan clearly disliked his former owner. After all, every day he woke up watching his family get sold away. Even when he was delivered, his cage was broken, and there wasn’t even food in the dish.
Si Jingce stepped in front of him, ready to send the man away—but then realized that if they wanted to find Yanyan’s parents, asking this person might be the fastest way…
“Go inside first,” Si Jingce said, pushing Yanyan into the room. “I’ll ask him about your family.”
Ah… that actually makes sense.
Yanyan didn’t rush to chase the bird trafficker away. He walked into the room with three backward glances, leaving a crack in the door to secretly peek outside.
The former owner stood at the door, stubbornly pressing the doorbell. On the fifth press, the door finally opened.
Si Jingce said impatiently, “We agreed you wouldn’t come disturb us again. What are you here for now?”
The former owner was also an online content creator, usually posting educational content about bird care. Before handing Yanyan over, Si Jingce had thought he was a very upright science popularizer.
But after talking with him, some of the ideas he expressed… truly made Si Jingce understand what it meant for someone to “collapse as a person.”
The former owner laughed awkwardly and lifted the bags in his hands. “I came for a follow-up visit, and to see Yanyan.”
As he spoke, he tried to step inside.
Si Jingce blocked the doorway completely. “Take your things back. If you have something to say, just say it.”
The bags were filled with bird nests and unknown bird feed. Yanyan didn’t need any of that anymore.
Seeing that Si Jingce truly wouldn’t let him in, the former owner had no choice but to stop.
“Ah, I saw your Weibo, so I came,” he said with a flattering smile. “You’re looking for Yanyan’s bird parents and the others from his nest, right?”
Si Jingce nodded.
The man cautiously asked, “Did something happen to Yanyan?”
“No.”
He visibly relaxed. “That’s good. I still have the contact info of the other buyers. If you need it, I can send it to you.”
Si Jingce gave him a suspicious look.
That generous?
The former owner took out his phone awkwardly. “Uh… maybe add me back first.”
Si Jingce added him again—and he really did send over all the contact details.
…Just like that?
“Oh, I also have photos of Yanyan when he was little. Want to see?”
He sent a picture.
It was Yanyan as a chick, together with his family.
Five or six pearl finches crowded into one nest. The two adult birds in front had clean feathers, carefully protecting their chicks.
The little birds hadn’t molted yet—round, fluffy, and grayish.
Si Jingce immediately picked out his boyfriend.
As expected—the biggest and prettiest one.
He couldn’t help but smile. “Do you have more photos or videos?”
“Yes!” the man nodded eagerly. “Lots of them.”
He sent several cute ones. Si Jingce looked through them one by one.
There was Yanyan squeezed on a branch with his siblings, mouths open waiting to be fed. Yanyan splashing around in a water dish. Yanyan buried in millet, eating happily.
Si Jingce thoroughly indulged himself.
“Yanyan’s parents were top quality—I paid a lot to get them. Their chicks all turned out beautiful too.”
The former owner smiled. “It’s just that this clutch wasn’t well socialized—especially Yanyan. Looks cute, but actually very fierce. The moment he saw people, he’d hide in the corner. Reach out a hand and he’d bite. Every buyer got pecked several times.”
Now Si Jingce finally understood why such a beautiful bird had trouble selling.
At the time, the man hadn’t mentioned Yanyan would bite. And afterward, Yanyan had always been well-behaved.
“Yanyan isn’t fierce,” Si Jingce said very blindly. “They just weren’t liked by him.”
The former owner, who had also been pecked badly before, fell silent for a moment, then agreed, “Right… that means you and Yanyan have fate. Such a fierce bird didn’t peck you.”
Si Jingce caught the key point. “So you knew Yanyan bites, and still told me to touch him back then?”
The former owner: “Uh… well…”
Seeing he had nothing to say, Si Jingce was ready to send him off.
But the man suddenly revealed his true purpose.
“I recently quit my job and moved back. Yanyan is a bird I really like… so I wanted to ask, can you return him to me?”
Si Jingce’s expression immediately darkened.
He had expected this. From the beginning, they had agreed the bird couldn’t be taken back.
“I bought Yanyan from you. I won’t return him.”
“I understand, I understand.” The man quickly transferred 400 yuan. “I’ll return the money and buy him back from you.”
“I know you’re reluctant—Yanyan is very popular now, has high commercial value. But I raised him after all…”
Si Jingce silently messaged security to come over. As he listened, he finally understood.
This person saw Yanyan become popular and regretted it—now he wanted to take him back to profit.
Four hundred yuan… to take his boyfriend away.
Even for a normal pet, that amount was nowhere near enough—let alone trying to openly take his fiancé.
He said calmly, “Do you have more photos of Yanyan as a chick?”
The former owner hurriedly sent everything he had left.
“That’s all. You can keep them as memories. If you really can’t bear it, I can compensate you with an even better pearl finch.”
The last photo showed Yanyan just after hatching—bald, eyes closed, looking like a tiny alien.
Si Jingce saved the final photo, quietly blocked and deleted him again, then pointed toward the door.
The man turned back, confused. “What do you mean? You’re keeping the bird in the hallway?”
No chirping… was it still sleeping?
Si Jingce said nothing, just kept pointing.
The man misunderstood. “You really keep the bird in the hallway? So you’re letting me take him back?”
As he spoke, he walked toward the corridor. The elevator opened—and security stepped out.
“Get lost,” Si Jingce said expressionlessly. “Don’t even think about taking my wife.”
Then he shut the door.
The security guards froze at that last sentence, their expressions instantly changing as they stared at the stranger.
Broad daylight—and someone’s trying to steal another man’s wife?!
The former owner’s eyes widened.
…What the hell?! Is this guy insane?!
“I only want your bird—I don’t want your wife!”
