Chapter 173: Like a Campus Drama
The moment they walked out of the “exam room,” Xu Huazhang asked with certainty, “Baby, 100 points?”
“100.” Mu Lantu’s answer was casual. With such a simple paper, scoring full marks was just standard procedure.
A sweet strawberry ice cream appeared in front of him.
“Reward.” Xu Huazhang smiled.
In Mu Lantu’s heart, a tiny version of himself leapt with joy. Who wouldn’t love a reward? He took the ice cream and bit into it—cold, fresh, sweet.
“You too, 100.”
“100. Let’s head back to the dorm.”
The two of them scooters, hand in hand, gliding toward the dorms at an easy pace. Their movements were steady, leisurely—like a pair of lovers ice-skating romantically together.
Along the way, groups of students chatted excitedly about the evening’s exam.
Mu Lantu overheard them.
Many believed that from now on, every evening self-study session would be like this—just an exam. As long as they completed a paper within an hour, regardless of right or wrong, they would receive a guaranteed 100 gold coins. In other words, even if they didn’t do a single dungeon task, they could still earn 100 gold coins daily. That amount was enough for daily living expenses—so they could just slack off!
Lights out was at 10 p.m.
That meant only one hour between the end of evening self-study and lights out—a tight schedule.
Back in the dorm, Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang washed up first. Dirty clothes could be washed by hand, or they could purchase laundry service from the smartwatch’s supermarket—5 gold coins per item. The price was fair: wash, dry, and done in an instant.
There were new faces in the dorm.
The beds of erased roommates had been reassigned to new students filling in for Class 2.
Li Kaige sat at his desk, wolfing down a boxed meal with two meat dishes—braised pork and spicy chicken leg, both with strong aromas. Beside the meal sat an open bottle of cola.
Qi Tianlu was surprised. “Li Kaige, eating well, huh? Struck it rich?”
“Heh-heh!” Li Kaige beamed, swallowing his food and taking a huge gulp of cola before saying loudly, “Didn’t I just take the exam? I scribbled answers at random and got 0 points, but I still earned 100 gold coins! So I treated myself! With 100 gold coins a day, I can live just fine. Guess I’m the lucky fool type! Hahaha! Sure, you guys earn more, but tsk—too much work!”
The others looked at him with unreadable expressions.
Qi Tianlu frowned. “So you’re assuming every evening self-study from now on will be an exam like today’s?”
“Isn’t it obvious? Of course!” Li Kaige glanced smugly around. “Brother Qi, why not slack off with me? Missions are too dangerous, seriously!”
“That’s only your guess. I don’t think we should be too optimistic,” Qi Tianlu advised gently.
Carrying his toiletries, Song Bochao walked toward the bathroom. “First and second period were both petrology, but the dungeon content was completely different.”
“You guys are overthinking!” Li Kaige’s smile faltered. Ignoring the unease building in his chest, he kept shoveling food into his mouth. But the braised pork and spicy chicken, delicious moments ago, now tasted like wax—flavorless and heavy.
*
Sunset, sunrise. A new day began.
Mu Lantu woke to the alarm, birds chirping cheerfully outside, tricking him into thinking he was back in a normal campus.
Xu Huazhang looked at his lover lying still with open eyes. “Baby?”
Mu Lantu stretched lazily. “Getting up now.”
Students seemed in better spirits today, since there were fewer classes: only third and fourth periods in the morning, and fifth and sixth in the afternoon.
7:00 a.m.—morning exercises began.
Task: Finish in the top 22 of a 5000-meter run. Rejecting means expulsion from Infinite University—no punishment, no reward. If no choice is made within 30 seconds, acceptance is automatic.
Reward for success: 1 credit, minimum 100 gold coins.
Punishment for failure: Death (10 credits can cancel one erasure; no further explanation will be given).
[Accept][Reject]
Mu Lantu immediately noticed the change: the clause “10 credits can cancel one erasure.”
It didn’t reassure him—rather, it made danger smell stronger. Perhaps dungeon difficulty would rise from now on.
After accepting, Mu Lantu found himself on a standard circular track.
This wasn’t Infinite University’s playground. Behind the starting line, numbered lanes stretched from 1 to 11, each with four players lined up.
Mu Lantu stood in lane 3, second position.
Surrounded by others, he stayed alert.
A flat, emotionless voice announced overhead: “This track is 1000 meters per lap. Ready—go!”
Some players sprinted. Others launched surprise attacks.
Killing intent came from behind. Mu Lantu, as if with eyes on the back of his head, caught the attacker’s wrist. The dagger gleamed in the sun before his counter forced the wrist backward 360 degrees—the blade plunged into the attacker’s own side.
“Ahhh!” The man screamed, blood and tears spilling, collapsing.
Mu Lantu released smoothly and dashed ahead.
Behind him, others still fought.
He didn’t rush into the lead, keeping an eye on the track—worried about hidden traps.
The runner in front crossed the 300-meter mark without incident. Only then did Mu Lantu pump his arms and accelerate.
For others, completing 5000 meters might require pacing—slow then fast—but not for him. He trusted his stamina to maintain high speed throughout.
Players muttered as he overtook them one after another, calling him an idiot while secretly waiting to watch him collapse.
But what happened shattered their expectations: Mu Lantu ran lap after lap at 500–600 meters per minute, completing all five laps at that pace, crossing the finish line first!
A monster!
And every time someone tried to block or attack him, he counter-killed them.
Attack others, and you must accept the risk of death.
“Congratulations, player, for completing the task. Reward: 1 credit, 600 gold coins.”
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang exchanged smiles.
“600.”
“600.”
“Back to the dorm?” Xu Huazhang asked.
“Yeah. Nothing else to see out here.” Mu Lantu spun his scooter in two lazy circles. “I just hope the weekend comes quickly. Will Infinite University give us a break? Let us off campus? Big Baby, do you want to check out the library?”
The library was the only possible place for relaxation.
So far, no one had reported anything about it—not even Song Bochao had intel. The only explanation was that no one had ventured inside yet.
Xu Huazhang, knowing his lover was stifled, wrapped an arm around his waist. “Let’s build up more before going.”
Ten credits for one chance to cancel death—that was their lifeline.
Mu Lantu didn’t object. “Fine, we’ll take it slow.”
On the way back, he glanced at the distant Earth Sciences and Engineering building and mused, “What would happen if we went into a classroom when no classes are scheduled?”
“I’ll take you to try later,” Xu Huazhang promised indulgently.
Mu Lantu turned, grinning wide. Xu Huazhang always accepted every whim of his. With such a partner, what more could one ask for?
He squeezed Xu Huazhang’s hand and produced two lollipops.
Together they slid down the wide tree-lined path, hand in hand, lollipops in their mouths. A sweet sight in Infinite University, like a scene straight out of a campus romance drama.
Kong Tingxue stood by the roadside, watching their retreating figures. Her calm face silently revealed her inner thoughts. To witness such sweetness here—wasn’t it also a kind of comfort for the soul?
On another avenue, Zhao Yuanzhou stared at Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang, torn. Why did fate bring Mu Lantu here? To chase was impossible; to let go felt unbearable. In eighteen years, this was the first time he had been moved.
Good family, strong academics, happy home—always the model child. He had never felt dissatisfied with life. But now, fate felt cruel.
Fang Menglei said coldly, “Forget him. If you keep dwelling on this, one day you’ll lose control. It’ll get you killed.”
Zhao Yuanzhou stayed silent.
That day, Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang cleared all four dungeon tasks smoothly.
After sixth period, it was only 4 p.m.—too early for dinner.
They returned to the dorm.
With extra free time, Song Bochao finished reviewing manuscripts—36 in total—and handed them over.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang double-checked, accepting 33 of them.
As agreed, Mu Lantu owed Song Bochao 660 gold coins. He and Xu Huazhang each transferred 330.
But gold coins were devaluing fast. Mu Lantu sighed inwardly.
“This… isn’t it too much?” Song Bochao was startled. “Even though you said made-up dungeons are fine if logical, 20 gold coins per piece still feels high. How about this—10 coins for the fabricated ones?”
Xu Huazhang gave him an approving look. This man was indeed worth befriending.
Mu Lantu studied him, saw the sincerity, and laughed. “No need. Keep it 20 per piece—but we’ll set a limit. Fake-to-real ratio, one to ten.”
Song Bochao felt like Mu Lantu was playing a much bigger game, but it wasn’t his place to pry.
“Alright. Then thank you both for your support!”
“You’re welcome.” Mu Lantu added, “From now on, let’s exchange every two days. That way, neither of us will feel rushed.”
