Chapter 170: Using the Item
In the other tent, Mu Lantu whispered an ultra-quiet reply for Wen Yushu:
“Overcome by lust.”
Xu Huazhang quickly covered his mouth. “Naughty.”
The quarrel next door was still going on. It seemed they had forgotten there were outsiders nearby.
“You’re always yelling at me! It’s Mom who’s being unreasonable!” Deng Zhiqi pressed aggressively. “Mom, don’t you like reasoning so much? Then tell me—what was I thinking?”
Mu Lantu felt deep sympathy for Deng Tianyu and his wife. Better to have given birth to a roast pork bun than to him.
“I’m being unreasonable? You only dare shout at me because I’m your mother!” Wen Yushu was so furious that she became calm instead. “Since you keep pressing, I’ll answer you. Xuanxuan, come here, let Mama cover your ears. Deng Zhiqi, listen carefully…”
“Yushu!” Deng Tianyu was alarmed.
“Dad, let her say it!” Deng Zhiqi insisted.
“Hah.” Wen Yushu sneered coldly. “For the sake of a girl, you—Deng Zhiqi—were willing to risk your father, your mother, and your sister dying in a car crash just so she could get in the car! Overcome by lust, blinded by desire! Did you hear me clearly? How did I give birth to such a heartless, ungrateful creature?”
The reasoning was correct, but the words were harsh. Mu Lantu thought to himself, This isn’t good.
“Aaah—I didn’t! I didn’t!” Deng Zhiqi shouted, storming out of the tent.
Xu Huazhang lifted the flap, flicked a pebble, and struck Deng Zhiqi down.
He collapsed on the ground, unconscious.
Xu Huazhang strode over and hauled him up.
“Zhiqi!”
Wen Yushu and Deng Tianyu rushed out together.
“He’s fine. I sealed his pressure point.”
“Thank you, Mr. Xu.”
They brought Deng Zhiqi back into the tent.
“You too,” Deng Tianyu scolded his wife. “Why argue with a child? He’s just immature. You have to teach him patiently.”
Wen Yushu shook her head. “Sigh, I wasn’t arguing. It’s because we’ve neglected him too much. I don’t know when he became like this. I believe he didn’t truly mean to harm us when he grabbed the steering wheel, but his actions showed that to get what he wants, nothing else matters to him.
If a person can’t control his own desires, one day, he’ll be controlled by them. You saw it just now—no matter how many times we gave him a way to step down, did he take it? He thought he was in the right.
This isn’t just about saving face. We’re his parents, we can indulge him, but once we’re gone, who else will? If we keep giving him leeway, I’m afraid he’ll never wake up!”
Deng Tianyu understood her good intentions. “I know you’re right. Once we reach the capital, I’ll talk to him properly.”
At last, peace returned next door.
Mu Lantu never expected that a dungeon mission would get him entangled in such a profound topic as parenting. Honestly, unbelievable.
He and Xu Huazhang took turns keeping watch, then woke the Deng family at six in the morning.
Deng Zhiqi was still sulking, face full of shame. When he tried to run off again, Xu Huazhang, at Deng Tianyu’s request, locked him in the car and sealed his acupoint.
After breakfast, they set out immediately.
Deng Zhiqi refused to eat in protest. No one else cared. Missing one meal wouldn’t kill him.
Mu Lantu used the sleeping incense again.
There was another tough battle ahead. Better to keep everyone quiet.
Xu Huazhang said, “Baby, the highway entrance is just up ahead.”
When the car reached the entrance, they didn’t even need to get close to see that the toll station had been smashed, a three- to four-meter-high mound of dirt blocking the road. An excavator stood arrogantly in the middle.
The soil was still damp.
They must have dug it overnight.
Mu Lantu smelled conspiracy.
“Blue camp’s doing? They don’t want us on the highway.”
Xu Huazhang wasn’t surprised. “If it were me, I’d do the same—force the Red camp to take provincial roads instead, passing through towns and villages. With the zombie hordes and tricky terrain, it’d be easy to wipe them out completely.”
Mu Lantu stayed calm. “Our ‘master key’—can it work on the excavator?”
“Xiao Yuntian’s business card. A permanent item that can open any lock in the dungeon world. No cooldown.” Xu Huazhang repeated the description. “An excavator’s ignition lock is still a lock. So yes.”
“Let’s go.” Mu Lantu strode forward with absolute confidence.
“Baby, do you even know how to drive an excavator?” Xu Huazhang raised the killer question.
Mu Lantu froze. “…I’ll find out by trying.”
“I do.” Xu Huazhang’s steady voice carried a hint of pride.
Mu Lantu looked doubtful. “Really?”
Xu Huazhang ruffled his hair. “Read more books.”
Mu Lantu wanted to kick him. Who else would read such niche manuals?
Xu Huazhang kissed him lightly, appeasing. “My bad, I’m not that good either. But we don’t need to clear everything—just open a path. Push, ram, flatten—it all works.”
Mu Lantu knew better than to argue further. He toyed with him a bit, then let it go.
“Fine. All yours.”
“Watch me.”
Xu Huazhang climbed onto the excavator. Sure enough, no key. He swiped Xiao Yuntian’s business card, and it roared to life.
Mu Lantu stepped back, watching as Xu Huazhang, awkward but steady, maneuvered it.
Within minutes, a four-meter-wide passage was carved out. The excavator shoved aside broken steel, glass, and concrete from the ruined toll station.
Mu Lantu grabbed a broom and swept up the glass shards to protect their tires.
Once on the highway, driving became much easier. Abandoned cars weren’t nearly as dense as Mu Lantu had feared.
The off-road vehicle sped smoothly forward. Mu Lantu opened the window to feel the wind—refreshing.
“Baby, close the window!”
He did so, puzzled. “What is it?”
“Bugs.”
Right then, two thumb-sized black insects slammed into the glass.
Mu Lantu clicked his tongue. Good thing he closed it in time. If they’d flown in, maybe even into his mouth… He shook his head, stopping the thought.
Adorable or not, no thanks.
Xu Huazhang placed a hand on his thigh and squeezed lightly.
“What’re you pinching me for?”
“Felt like it,” Xu Huazhang teased.
Mu Lantu thought: Just wait till we’re off the highway. I’ll pinch you back.
After over four hours of driving, the capital’s exit finally came into view.
In the distance loomed the towering walls of the capital base.
Once off the highway, the zombies thickened.
Both men loaded their pistols.
The Deng family remained fast asleep.
Mu Lantu steered into a quiet side street, pulling into the courtyard of a small hotel.
They cleared out the zombies and checked every room—no survivors.
“Baby, are we waiting here for Zhang Xinshuo’s team? For as long as it takes?” Xu Huazhang asked.
“Three days at most,” Mu Lantu said. “If they don’t arrive by then, it likely means they’re gone. Also… I’ve been wondering. Maybe the mission only requires one player from a camp to succeed for the whole camp to be considered successful? Otherwise, if only one person completed it and the rest all got erased, that’d be too harsh. Infinite University wouldn’t be so reckless. They value numbers—they wouldn’t just slaughter everyone.”
Xu Huazhang remained noncommittal. “That’s only your guess.”
“True. I wouldn’t risk it. If I’m wrong, then everyone else’s mission fails. That’d be absurd.” Mu Lantu sighed. The mission briefing really should’ve been clearer.
After finishing their sweep, they woke the Deng family.
“Wake up. We’ve reached the outskirts of the capital.”
Even Deng Zhiqi was roused. No chance of him sneaking away now—the hotel outside swarmed with zombies.
“So soon? We’re already at the capital?” Deng Tianyu was stunned.
Mu Lantu nodded. “This is a hotel. We cleared the zombies. You can go up to the rooftop to see.”
“I want to check.” Sensing he might be doubted, Deng Tianyu quickly added, “Not that I don’t trust you. It just feels unbelievable to arrive so fast.”
“No problem.”
Mu Lantu accompanied them up.
From the rooftop, Deng Tianyu spotted the massive sign of Capital Railway Station. At last, he believed.
“We really made it to the capital!”
“See? You doubter. How could it be fake?” Wen Yushu beamed. “Xiao Mu, don’t mind this old man.”
“Of course not,” Mu Lantu replied.
“Mama, so many zombies out there!” Deng Zhixuan hid behind Wen Yushu.
“Yes. Which is why you must never sneak out of the hotel, understand?” Wen Yushu reminded gently.
Zhixuan nodded obediently. “Mm, I understand.”
“When do we head to the base?” Deng Tianyu asked eagerly. The fortress of safety was right there—he couldn’t wait another minute.
“Not yet,” Mu Lantu explained. “As you saw, the zombies outside are many. Breaking through their siege won’t be easy. Today, we’ll rest here. Tomorrow, I’ll scout the situation, then we’ll make a proper plan.”
“Good. Thank you. Just be careful.” Deng Tianyu agreed readily.
That night passed uneventfully.
The next morning, after breakfast, Xu Huazhang stayed behind to protect the Dengs while Mu Lantu ventured out alone.
He loitered near the base all morning but found nothing unusual. Perhaps the Blue camp hadn’t arrived yet—or maybe they had another plan.
Back at the hotel, Deng Tianyu asked again.
“Too many zombies. Just us two, it’ll be hard to break through. Do you recall our three other teammates? We’ll wait for them here. More hands, more strength.”
Mu Lantu spoke honestly, but also to stall for time.
The Dengs, anxious as they were, had no choice but to wait.
Even Deng Zhiqi had run out of steam. He and Wen Yushu were locked in a cold war now.
Wen Yushu, fuming, thought: Once we’re inside the base, let’s see how I deal with you!
