Doomsday Grocery Store – CH285

Chapter 285

??Looking at the boy flying mid-air, the giant suddenly glanced at the hand he was using to strike the barrier. He raised it and made a gesture.

The boy was about the same size as his palm—so tiny.

Because the boy had flown high enough, the giant could clearly see his delicate and adorable features, his chubby round face, and even his clothes, which were exquisitely made and radiated a kind of cuteness the giant had never encountered before.

“Little guy, of course I can see you,” the giant said, his tone softening.

However, due to the vast difference in size, the words still echoed like a low hum in Tang Yu’an and Zhou Qi’s ears.

Tang Yu’an covered his ears before saying, “Sorry, we didn’t know this was your territory. We were just trying to protect ourselves.”

The giant nodded. “That makes sense. You’re so tiny—other animals could swallow you up in one bite. But…”

His gaze fell on the fence by the riverbank.

“Your companion was really rude!” he said. “Ten purple moons ago, I noticed them. I tried talking to them, but they completely ignored me!”

Tang Yu’an blinked.

In this alternate realm, there were some phenomena not found in the original world—for instance, the moon turned purple once a month.

Looks like people in this world use “purple moons” to keep track of time…

But when the giant said “companion,” did he mean—

“Do you mean this?” Tang Yu’an took out a construction robot.

“Yes! That rude little guy!” the giant said angrily.

Tang Yu’an explained, “It’s a robot, not a real living being, so it couldn’t respond to you. I apologize on its behalf.”

“Robot?”

The giant blinked in confusion. “What species is that?”

Clearly, he was dressed in animal skins and was unfamiliar with this kind of technology from a scientific civilization.

Tang Yu’an wasn’t quite sure how to explain it, so he simply said, “It can only build things, not communicate. But domestic service robots can.”

He flew back to the ground and pulled out an unused domestic robot, enlarging it to its maximum height of two meters, then programmed it.

As he worked, the giant set down his fish and sat to watch. Eventually, he even lay on his stomach, propping up his chin and tilting his head with a smile—it looked like he was watching a cat wash its face with its paw.

Zhou Qi: “…”

Being stared at by a giant like that, even with a protective barrier in place, still gave him chills.

Tang Yu’an, busy programming the robot, didn’t seem to notice.

Soon, the robot activated.

“Hello, I’m happy to serve you!”

Hearing the robotic voice, the giant’s eyes lit up. “Wow! It finally spoke! What’s it saying?”

“Language not recognized. Initiating learning mode… Please speak to me more—it will help me better understand the new language.”

Tang Yu’an and Zhou Qi were only able to communicate with the giant thanks to a translation pack purchased from the system, which the robot didn’t have.

So Tang Yu’an had to translate for it.

“Alright then, this little guy is kinda interesting too,” the giant finally forgave the construction robot’s earlier rudeness.

Then, curious, Tang Yu’an asked, “Mr. Giant, how were you able to see us? This barrier has a cloaking function. You shouldn’t have been able to detect us.”

He had checked the control panel earlier—the dimensional house was indeed in “closed” mode, so the fact that the giant could see them was very strange.

If this had been earlier, he probably wouldn’t have asked. But now he figured there was no harm in being direct.

It might even help them explore this world better.

The giant laughed heartily and said, “Of course I can see you! Don’t you know? Humans are the darlings of the earth—these little illusions don’t work on us at all!”

His laughter thundered like a storm, and both Tang Yu’an and Zhou Qi instinctively covered their ears.

They weren’t sure about everything yet, but one thing was clear—the giant didn’t think of himself as a “giant,” which implied… in this world, all humans were this size?

This really was a high-magic realm!

“Mr. Giant, then do you know powerful magic?” Tang Yu’an asked curiously.

“Magic? You mean the abilities used by magical beasts?” The giant shook his head. “No, humans can’t use that.”

“Oh… I see.”

Perhaps noticing Tang Yu’an’s disappointment, the giant hurriedly added, “Even though I can’t use it, magical beasts can’t use their abilities on me either—their powers are ineffective against me!”

Tang Yu’an’s eyes widened. “Their abilities don’t work on you?”

“Exactly!”

Seeing the tiny boy’s surprise, the giant looked pleased. He pointed at a fish beside him and said, “This kind of swordfish can generate electricity, but it doesn’t affect me at all.”

So, was he completely immune to psionic or energy-based attacks?

Tang Yu’an thought of the Purple-Red Dream Pillow and couldn’t help glancing at Zhou Qi.

Did that mean Zhou Qi’s abilities would also be useless against the giant?

Zhou Qi frowned. After a moment of thought, he said, “I don’t believe it—unless you let me try it.”

The giant looked him over and asked, “You can use magical beast abilities?”

Zhou Qi nodded.

The giant crossed his arms and rubbed his chin. “Then you must not be human. But how come you look exactly like one? What kind of creature are you really?”

“Are you trying to change the subject?” Zhou Qi asked.

“Of course not!” the giant replied. “Go ahead—if you want to test it, I’m ready.”

So, Zhou Qi directly cast an Ice Spell at the giant.

However, before the psionic energy could even reach the giant, Zhou Qi could already feel the ice power dissipate.

Unwilling to accept this, he tried again with fire, earth, wood, and metal attributes—but without exception, each lost effectiveness the moment they got near the giant.

Even trying to manipulate the ground to sink beneath the giant’s feet didn’t work, as the earth element couldn’t get close to him at all, let alone extend under his body.

The giant chuckled, a smug expression spreading across his face.

In the end, Zhou Qi had no choice but to stop.

He furrowed his brows deeply, his expression growing solemn. He had thought himself to have developed a respectable level of power, yet everything failed when it came to the giant?

If they were to ever encounter another giant in this world—one with hostile intent—wouldn’t that put them in serious danger?

Thankfully, the very first giant they met in this world happened to be this simple-minded, easygoing one…

“See? I wasn’t bluffing!” the giant said, now sitting cross-legged and leaning in to study Zhou Qi. “But you, little guy—your powers are kinda special!”

Tang Yu’an and Zhou Qi both perked up their ears.

Could this giant possibly have some insight about the spirit bug inside Zhou Qi?

“This is the first time I’ve ever seen a creature use so many elemental abilities! How did you do it?”

At that, Zhou Qi sighed inwardly.

So, the giant didn’t know anything…

Then Tang Yu’an said, “Mr. Giant, I have some other abilities—can I try them on you?”

Ah, that’s right. Aside from psionics, they also had system items.

The giant waved a huge hand. “Go ahead—use whatever tricks you’ve got!”

First up was the cat teaser wand.

“Jingle jingle—jingle jingle—”

Unfortunately, other than once again flashing that “overwhelmed by cuteness” expression, the giant had no special reaction.

Since the cat wand didn’t work, there was no need to try the dog frisbee or the mousetrap either.

“That little stick is really cute. Why’d you put it away?” the giant couldn’t help but ask when he saw Tang Yu’an stow the wand.

“It’s nothing. I just brought out the wrong item.”

Tang Yu’an then reached a hand past the protective barrier. “Can I shake your hand?”

He was wearing elegant, pristine white swan gloves, which made his hands look refined and delicate.

The giant quickly wiped his hand on his clothes until he felt it was clean, then extended a single finger.

Tang Yu’an hugged his fingertip and tested it gently. He noticed—

The swan gloves seemed to be working?

His eyes lit up, and his courage soared.

“Mr. Giant, can you sit still? I want to see if I can lift you.”

Maybe that would let him gauge the upper limit of the gloves’ power?

The giant burst out laughing.

“Lift me? You’re quite the little jokester, aren’t you?”

“I’m not joking. I’m not sure if it’ll work either, so I need to try.”

“All right, give it a shot.”

Zhou Qi instinctively grabbed Tang Yu’an’s arm. The giant couldn’t enter the protective barrier, so Tang Yu’an would have to go outside…

“It’s okay. I think we can trust Mr. Giant.”

Hearing this, Zhou Qi had no choice but to let go—though he watched nervously from the side.

Tang Yu’an stepped outside the barrier.

The giant remained sitting cross-legged. Tang Yu’an’s height barely reached above his knee—it was an adorably mismatched sight!

Then, the little boy in elegant white gloves reached out both hands, bent down, and touched the giant’s knee.

The giant had been watching him with a smile—until a powerful force suddenly surged through his body.

Boom—!

Tang Yu’an didn’t manage to lift him… but he did flip the giant over!

The giant’s eyes widened in disbelief as he stared up at the sky. By the time he sat up again, the adorable little one had already run back behind the transparent barrier.

“Little guy, how’d you do that?” the giant asked in astonishment. “Did you just flip me over?”

Tang Yu’an nodded. “Seems like it. You’re not hurt, are you?”

“Of course not!” The giant looked Tang Yu’an up and down, still unable to resist saying, “Where on earth did you get all that strength?”

Tang Yu’an grinned. “I have another special power too.”

“Oh? What kind of power?”

“One that makes people laugh.”

“You mean, like telling jokes?”

Tang Yu’an shook his head. “Nope—more like a power that makes people laugh uncontrollably. They keep laughing for a long time. I’m not sure if it’ll work on you, though.”

That immediately piqued the giant’s interest.

“Come on then, let’s try it!” he said. “I want to see what this ability’s all about.”

Zhou Qi couldn’t help but give him a “you’re very brave” kind of look.

“I’m going to try it now, okay?” Tang Yu’an confirmed again.

The giant nodded. “Bring it on!”

So, Tang Yu’an took out a Joy Marble and, using remote item control, lightly tapped it against the giant.

The moment contact was made, Zhou Qi grabbed Tang Yu’an and flew them both back to the floating bridge.

The giant looked up at them in confusion just as they took off, wondering why they were running away—until he suddenly felt his mouth curl upward against his will.

“HAHAHAHA—HAHAHAHAHA—!”

Soon, the riverbank echoed with the giant’s uncontrollable laughter—no matter how he tried to hold it back, he simply couldn’t stop.
