Chapter 51: This Thing Is So Hard to Deal With
Her body dragged roughly across the frozen, gravel-strewn snow; sharp, burning pain flared along her cheeks, forehead, and arms as several bloody gashes opened in an instant.
The freezing gale forced snow and ice into her nose and mouth, choking her until she could barely draw a breath.
Hanging upside down, the blood rushed violently to her head, making her dizzy and setting off a throbbing ache behind her temples.
The world spun inverted before her eyes. Through her blurred vision, all she could see was the grotesque trunk drawing terrifyingly closer, accompanied by a suffocating, bone-deep dread of death.
Terror seized her heart with an icy grip. Every calculating scheme she had harbored was instantly thrown to the winds, leaving behind only the raw, instinctual urge to survive.
Parting her cracked, bleeding lips, she screamed desperately toward the front: “Chu Yang——!! Save me——!!! Chu Yang, help me, hurry——!!! I don’t want to die! Save me——!!!”
Chu Yang had just severed an ambushing branch with a Spatial Blade to shield Su Mubai. At the sound of the desperate shriek, he whipped his head around, catching the exact moment Jiang Lin was caught and hauled away by the tendrils after shoving the young boy to safety.
There was no time to think; saving a life came first!
“Brother Jiang! Cover me!” Chu Yang shouted, kicking off the hard snow and sprinting toward the spot where Jiang Lin was being dragged.
At the same time, he slashed his hands forward, sending invisible, razor-sharp Spatial Blades cutting through the air toward the thick bough coiled around her!
Splat! Splat!
The first Spatial Blade carved a deep notch into the wood, sending a spray of thick, dark green sap into the snowdrifts.
The severed limb writhed violently in response, its dragging speed suddenly accelerating!
A second Spatial Blade struck the exact same groove immediately after!
With a sharp, resounding crack, the resilient branch finally snapped in two!
Carried forward by pure momentum, the severed length skidded a short distance through the snow before grinding to a halt with Jiang Lin attached.
Jiang Lin tumbled into the snowbank, feeling as though every bone in her body had been jarred out of place. She coughed up a spray of blood mixed with icy slush, her clothes smeared in dirty mud and foul-smelling green sap, leaving her completely disheveled.
Lifting her head, she stared in petrified horror at the remaining boughs thrashing nearby. Paralyzed with fear, she couldn’t even move a finger, completely forgetting to scramble to her feet and run.
Chu Yang closed the distance in a few rapid strides. Seeing her frozen in place, he couldn’t hold back a roar: “What are you spacing out for?! You’re about to lose your life—get up and run!”
Even as he shouted, he unleashed two more Spatial Blades, slicing clean through a pair of thinner tendrils that were whipping toward them to clear an open path.
His shout jolted Jiang Lin back to reality. Her survival instinct finally overcame the paralyzing terror; she scrambled onto all fours, ignoring the burning scrapes across her skin, and stumbled frantically toward the relative safety of the refugees behind them.
“Damn it, this monster is way tougher than those zombies!” Nearby, Lin Xiao finally managed to shatter the branch coiled around his weapon using raw brute force coupled with his Metal Ability enhancement. He leaned heavily on his knees, panting for breath as he shouted, “Its hide is way too thick! And its regenerative ability is insane!” Around the deep gashes he had carved into the wood, the rough bark was already wriggling, knitting itself back together at a visible pace.
“Focus your attacks on the main trunk! That’s the core!” Jiang Jue’s voice rang out, steady and calm.
Arcs of bright electricity crackled around his frame. He had already neutralized several waves of charging boughs with lightning bolts, yet new tendrils seemed to sprout without end.
A sharp, ruthless light flared in Jiang Jue’s eyes. Holding nothing back, he drew his hands together in front of his chest. Blinding blue-white lightning converged and compressed between his palms, emitting an ear-piercing, crackling whine that charged the surrounding air with static tension.
“Chu Yang! Restrict its branches! Lin Xiao, prepare for a heavy strike!” Jiang Jue commanded.
“On it!” Chu Yang drew a deep breath, pushing his mental focus to its absolute peak.
Instead of throwing scattered blades, he expanded his spatial domain outward, enveloping the entire perimeter around the trunk of the Mutated Withered Tree.
Instantly, the wildly thrashing limbs entering the spatial field slowed down as if bogged down in an invisible mire. Their sweeping arcs warped and grew clumsy, their momentum heavily diminished.
“Now!” Jiang Jue barked, thrusting his open palms forward with devastating force!
“Lightning Storm · Detonate!”
A massive, dazzling pillar of lightning—far denser and thicker than anything he had summoned before—tore through the swirling blizzard like a spear of divine judgment. Carrying an aura of pure destruction, it slammed dead-center into the dark, gnarled trunk!
BOOM——!!!
A deafening roar erupted as the blinding lightning detonated. The towering mutated tree shook violently down to its roots; the section of trunk that took the direct hit charred black and cracked apart instantly, dark green sap erupting from the fissures like a geyser.
Most of its thrashing branches went limp, their violent flailing subdued in a matter of seconds.
“Take this!!” Seizing the opening, Lin Xiao charged forward with a battle cry. A dazzling metallic sheen covered his body as he poured all his strength and the refined edge of his Metal Ability into his long blade, slashing down violently into the cavernous crack blasted open by the lightning!
Crack-crunch!
The edge bit deep into the heartwood, cleaving through a full third of the massive trunk!
A silent, mental screech seemed to ripple out from the dying plant. Its remaining tendrils spasmed weakly before losing all vitality, collapsing limply into the snowbanks. The entire tree shriveled and withered at a visible speed, its sickly, dark bark fading into the lifeless gray of burnt charcoal.
The skirmish was over. The blizzard continued to howl around them, the air now thick with the scent of ozone, bitter cold, fresh blood, and the strange, sour stench of decomposing plant matter.
Chu Yang let out a long, heavy breath. The heavy drain on his mental energy left a sheen of fine sweat across his brow.
Lin Xiao planted his blade into the snow, leaning against the hilt as he caught his breath.
Su Mubai stepped forward immediately, a gentle white light glowing around his hands. He first tended to the deep bruises and minor muscle strains Lin Xiao had suffered while wrestling with the branches, then turned his gaze toward Chu Yang.
“I’m fine, just a bit worn out,” Chu Yang said with a dismissive wave, turning to inspect the lifeless trunk. “Was that thing a Tier 2 mutant as well? It felt so much harder to kill than an ordinary zombie.”
“Mutated plants generally possess far greater vitality and more concealed cores, making them much more troublesome to handle,” Jiang Jue said as he walked over, his breathing slightly shallow; summoning that full-power Lightning Storm had clearly drained a significant portion of his energy reserves.
Stepping up to the scorched remains of the trunk, Jiang Jue used the tip of his straight blade to probe the charred base. Brushing away the blackened splinters and drifting ash, he uncovered a smooth, dark-brown crystal about the size of a quail egg. Its surface was irregular, with faint, wood-like grain flowing subtly beneath the outer shell.
The survivors stood frozen in lingering dread, staring at the fallen bodies in the snow and the massive, charred corpse of the mutant tree with pale, terrified faces.
Supported by a middle-aged woman, Jiang Lin sat in a nearby snowbank, her sprained ankle roughly wrapped in a strip of cloth. She kept her head lowered, her damp hair falling forward to conceal her expression, though her frame still trembled with aftershocks of fear.
Su Mubai had witnessed her earlier act of courage. Walking over, he knelt beside her injured ankle, summoning a warm white glow from his palms to begin soothing the torn ligaments.
Jiang Lin lifted her head, meeting Su Mubai’s gentle gaze, and murmured softly, “Thank you.”
Su Mubai said nothing in return, simply focusing his full attention on channeling his healing power.
