Robbing Food

Chapter 16: Robbing Food

A vicious glint flashed in Wang Rui’s eyes as he licked his chapped lips. “He’s the one! That fat guy looks like an easy target. Get your gear—we’re moving right now!”

The three grabbed their prepared weapons: Zhao Dayong clutched a solid iron rod, while Li Wen gripped a heavy kitchen knife.

As they crept past Jiang Jue’s closed door, they instinctively lightened their steps, tiptoeing down the hallway and out into the stairwell.

Reaching the fifth floor, Li Wen tapped lightly on the target’s door, but absolute silence answered from within.

Knock, knock, knock!

He banged harder. The sharp, heavy thuds sounded deafening in the dead silence of the corridor, yet the apartment remained as still as a grave.

Li Wen frowned, turning back to Wang Rui with a hushed whisper. “What now? The guy’s definitely in there. He’s just playing dead and refusing to open up.”

Zhao Dayong’s eyes shifted slyly, and he leaned into Wang Rui’s ear. “Brother Rui, why not have Zhao Youning give it a shot? A woman’s voice is soft, and she looks completely harmless. It won’t set off any alarms. She might just trick him into opening the door.”

Wang Rui considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Fine. Let’s do that.”

The three hurried down to the fourth floor and stopped outside Zhao Youning’s apartment.

Wang Rui tapped gently on the wood, keeping his voice low. “Youning, it’s me. Open up.”

The door cracked open, and Zhao Youning poked her head out warily, her face pale in the dim light. “Brother Rui? It’s so late—is something wrong?”

“We need a favor,” Wang Rui said, leaning into the gap. “Go upstairs and knock on that fat guy’s door on the fifth floor. Tell him you’re sick and need help. The second he unlocks it, just step out of the way.”

Zhao Youning took in the wild, eager look in their eyes, then caught sight of the iron pipe and cleaver in their hands. Realizing what they were planning, her expression turned sour. “Wait… you’re going to rob the guy upstairs? I’m not doing that! It’s way too dangerous!”

“Relax.” Wang Rui rested a heavy hand on her shoulder. His tone was smooth, but his grip tightened with an unmistakable edge. “You’ve got three grown men backing you up. What could possibly happen? Once we get the haul, we’ll make sure you get your cut. I promise you won’t starve.”

Zhao Dayong chimed in, prodding her further. “Exactly. In a world like this, dying from a zombie bite is death, and starving to death is just as bad. We might as well take a shot. Think about it—does sitting here with an empty stomach feel good?”

Zhao Youning bit her lip, torn with anxiety.

Yet, feeling the hollow, gnawing ache in her gut, her desperate hunger ultimately won out. She gave a small nod. “A-Alright… but you have to keep me safe.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve got your back,” Wang Rui said, giving his chest a confident pat with a smug grin.

The four made their way back up to the fifth floor.

Zhao Youning smoothed down her clothes, subtly tugging her neckline a bit lower. Taking a steadying breath, she plastered on a frail, helpless expression and called out in a soft, trembling voice, “Big brother… could you please open up? I’m feeling really sick and my head is spinning. Can you please help me?”

With a soft creak, the lock turned, and the door opened a narrow crack.

A plump young man peeked out, his eyes darting suspiciously across the empty landing. “Who are you? I… I don’t know you, and I can’t help. You should find someone else…”

At that exact second, Wang Rui charged from the shadows, throwing his entire weight into the door!

Caught completely unprepared, the young man was knocked backward, crashing hard onto his rear against the freezing concrete floor with a gasp of pain.

“What are you doing?!” the young man shrieked in terror, scrambling backward on all fours, pure dread in his eyes. “This is breaking and entering! I’m calling the police! Get out of my house!”

“Call the police?” Wang Rui sneered. With a sharp whoosh, a bright, crackling fireball erupted above his palm, casting an eerie, dancing orange glow across his face. “Go ahead and call! See if there are any cops left alive to save you! If you know what’s good for you, stay down and shut your mouth. We’re only here for the food—we won’t hurt you if you behave!”

The young man’s face went completely bloodless. His lips trembled violently as he backed away, stammering, “Y-You… this is robbery… it’s against the law…”

“Save your breath!” Zhao Dayong shoved the trembling man aside and immediately began tearing through the apartment.

“Brother Rui! We hit the jackpot!” Before long, Zhao Dayong hauled an entire unopened box of instant noodles from beneath the bed, his voice cracking with pure excitement. “A whole damn case! Who knew this fat bastard had this much stashed away!”

Li Wen quickly turned up five bags of sliced sandwich bread in the closet, alongside several vacuum-sealed packs of braised eggs.

Wang Rui raided the kitchen cabinets, pulling out four tins of canned meat, a dozen assorted bottled drinks, and two packs of smoked sausages from the bottom of the fridge, a broad, greedy grin spreading across his face.

“No! That’s all the food I have left!” Seeing his entire stockpile uncovered, the young man lost his mind. His eyes went bloodshot as he lunged forward, locking his arms tightly around Zhao Dayong’s leg. “I beg you, leave me something! Please, don’t leave me to starve!”

Li Wen stepped in and tried to wrench his fingers free, but the young man found a surge of desperate strength, his nails clawing so hard they dug into Zhao Dayong’s trousers.

Wang Rui’s gaze turned icy. Stepping up, he drove a heavy kick straight into the young man’s shoulder. The blow landed with a sickening thud, forcing a choked groan from the man, yet his grip never loosened.

“Let go!” Wang Rui barked, his voice turning savage.

The young man cried out in agony, but refused to yield. Instead, he strained his vocal cords and screamed at the top of his lungs, “Help! Robbery! Murder!”

“Damn it! You’re asking for it!” Wang Rui snapped, completely losing his temper. The flames in his palm flared with intense, scorching heat as he lunged forward, threatening to press the fire straight into the man’s flesh.

The young man flinched, but blind survival instinct and the desperation to protect his food gave him a final burst of reckless courage. Shifting his grip, he wrapped both arms around Wang Rui’s leg instead. “I’ll kill you! Give me back my food!”

Seeing this, Zhao Dayong cursed, raised the heavy iron rod, and brought it slamming down onto the young man’s spine.

With a dull crack, the man screamed in agony, his body shaking violently, yet his arms remained locked around Wang Rui like iron bands.

Li Wen joined in, using the heavy handle of the kitchen knife to batter the man’s shoulders and forearms.

“My food… my rations…” the young man sobbed through the beating, a dark trickle of blood leaking from the corner of his mouth and dripping down his chin with his tears. “I saved that scrap by scrap… it’s my life…”

Trapped in place, the throbbing pain in his shin and the man’s relentless wailing drove Wang Rui into a frantic, humiliated fury. He roared at Zhao Dayong, “Hit his head! Knock him out so he lets go!”

Zhao Dayong stared at the blood-smeared, sweat-soaked head and hesitated for a fraction of a second. But catching the murderous glare in Wang Rui’s eyes, he steeled himself and swung the iron pipe with all his might!

Crack!

The young man let out a faint, choked whimper as the strength finally drained from his arms. He slumped limply to the floor, his lips still trembling in an incoherent mumble: “My food… give it back…”

Fresh blood seeped from his fractured temple, running down his pale cheek and pooling into a dark stain on the floor. His half-open eyes grew unfocused, though his fingers still twitched faintly, as if desperately trying to grasp at something that was no longer there.

Wang Rui kicked the limp hand away in disgust. Snorting coldly, he hoisted the bulging backpack onto his shoulder and tested its weight, a satisfied smirk returning to his face. “Solid haul. Let’s move!”

Carrying their loot, the three turned and walked out the door without sparing another glance at the dying man on the floor.

Behind them, only the faint, ragged wheezing of the fading young man echoed through the empty apartment.

Standing out in the hall, Zhao Youning had listened to every blow and scream. Her stomach twisted into knots, and her hands clenched tightly in her pockets.

Yet, remembering the dizzying pangs of hunger she had suffered, she swallowed hard, burying her guilt beneath cold survival instincts.

Seeing the three emerge with heavy packs, she stepped forward immediately and caught Wang Rui’s sleeve, her eyes locked eagerly onto the bags. “Brother Rui, you promised me my share.”

Wang Rui paused, looking down at her with a knowing grin as he patted her shoulder with casual familiarity. “Don’t worry, you’ll get what was promised. Dayong, hand her a few packs of noodles.”

Zhao Dayong unzipped the pack with clear reluctance. Looking at the neatly stacked noodles inside, a pained look crossed his face. After dawdling for a few seconds, he slowly pulled out three packets and thrust them over, grumbling, “Here, take ’em.”

Zhao Youning took the food, her mind calculating instantly: even if she rationed this strictly, it wouldn’t last more than a few days.

Her gaze drifted back to the open bag in Zhao Dayong’s hands. Beyond the rows of noodles, she could see the distinct shapes of canned meats and sausages.

Pouting playfully, she leaned in, pressing her chest against Wang Rui’s arm as she spoke in a soft, sultry purr: “Brother Rui~ this tiny bit is barely enough to keep me going~ I’m so weak from hunger I can hardly walk…” She blinked up at him with wide, innocent eyes. “How about… we go sit in my room right now?…”

Feeling the soft warmth against his side, a fresh spark of lust flared in Wang Rui’s chest. He waved a dismissive hand at Zhao Dayong. “Give her two more.”

Zhao Dayong stood his ground, scowling with open resentment. “Brother Rui, there are three of us to feed, plus whatever you give her. This stash won’t last long if we keep giving it away…”

“I said give them to her, so do it!” Wang Rui snapped, glaring sharply with a tone that brooked no argument.

Zhao Dayong had no choice but to dig into the bag again. Looking between the instant noodles and the bread, he hesitated—noodles were far more filling and substantial, while bread went quickly.

Unwilling to part with the noodles, he reached in, grabbed two loaves of sliced bread, and shoved them roughly into Zhao Youning’s arms. “No more noodles. That’s all you’re getting—take it or leave it.”

Zhao Youning looked at the bread in her hands, tempted to push for more. But noticing the faint impatience creeping into Wang Rui’s expression, she quickly smoothed her features into a dazzling smile, knowing when to stop. “Thank you, Brother Rui~ You really treat me the best! I’ll go get everything ready inside. Come over whenever you’re ready~”

Giving his hand a playful squeeze and tossing him a lingering, seductive glance, she turned and swayed her hips gracefully back into her apartment.

Behind her, Zhao Dayong and Li Wen exchanged a look, curling their lips in pure, undisguised contempt.
