Chapter 133: House Hunting 2
Xiao Chen caught their expressions and instantly realized that the first unit had failed to impress them. He chimed in smoothly, “Do you feel the floor plan isn’t quite right? No problem at all—we have even better options available! That one is only considered a medium-sized unit in this district. Why don’t I take you over to see the large villa on the west side? It’s far more grand, with nearly double the square footage!”
Chu Yang and Jiang Jue exchanged a quick look, and Chu Yang nodded. “Alright, let’s go check out the larger one.”
Xiao Chen’s bright smile never wavered, but inside, his excitement surged. Judging by their discerning eyes and demanding standards, this group was genuinely capable of buying!
He hurriedly led them back outside. “Right this way, please! The property is just a short walk down the lane. It’ll give you a great chance to take in the surroundings of the estate.”
The group strolled along the clean stone path.
Passing a villa that was modest in size but situated in a remarkably quiet corner, Wang Qiang let out a soft gasp and pointed toward it. “Look at that one over there. The perimeter wall is unusually thick and built up quite high. It looks really solid.”
Everyone turned their eyes in that direction.
The house wasn’t particularly massive, but its outer wall had clearly been heavily reinforced. Constructed from thick, dark-gray stone, it rose at least a meter higher than the neighboring properties, with the faint outline of defensive wire netting visible along the top rim.
Even more striking was the roof: nearly the entire sloped surface was covered in dark blue solar panels, gleaming faintly under the sunlight.
“Wow, that’s impressive!” Li Yu exclaimed. “With all those solar panels installed, they never have to worry about power outages. Ever since the apocalypse hit, the main grid has been completely dead. Having a setup like that makes daily life so much easier.”
Jiang Lin nodded in full agreement. “Definitely. Having reliable electricity saves so much trouble and keeps everything running smoothly. The owner of that place was really thinking ahead.”
Chu Yang’s eyes sparkled as he looked at the roof. Turning to Jiang Jue, he said, “Brother Jiang, that’s a great idea! Once we settle in and get the chance, we should go scavenging for some solar panels and small generators. If we mount them on our own roof, having power will make life so much more comfortable.”
The post-apocalyptic weather was notoriously volatile and extreme. When winter struck, temperatures plummeted dozens of degrees below freezing, while the summers brought suffocating, unbearable heatwaves. Having dependable electricity for heating or air conditioning was practically a luxury.
Looking at the eager light in Chu Yang’s eyes, the corner of Jiang Jue’s mouth lifted in a soft, subtle smile. “Alright. Noted. Whenever we head out for supply runs in the future, we’ll keep an eye out for solar equipment.”
Walking beside them, Xiao Chen smiled and added, “You have a great eye, sir! Very few people in the base have managed to set up their own independent power grids—they’re mostly top-tier mercenary squads or figures with serious connections. Solar panels are always high-priority items on scavenging bounties.”
Chatting as they walked, the group soon arrived before an imposing villa that occupied a significantly larger plot of land.
Even the entrance was entirely different, featuring a heavy, ornate wrought-iron gate finished in black. Through the intricate ironwork, a vast front courtyard spread out before them.
The yard was neatly paved with flat stone slabs. Although the flower beds in the corners held only withered stalks, the overall layout felt open, spacious, and dignified. Along the perimeter wall stood a sturdy brick-built outdoor barbecue grill.
“Man, this yard is fantastic!” Wang Qiang’s eyes lit up as he took in the space. “We could get some skewers going, grill out here in the yard, and have an amazing time!”
Xiao Chen pulled out another ring of keys, his voice rising with enthusiasm as he unlocked the gate. “Everyone, this property is truly exceptional! It’s one of the finest layouts in all of Emerald Mountain Court, with over eight hundred square meters of living space! It has three above-ground floors, plus a full basement that serves as a private garage and storage vault.
“From what I heard, the original owner was a high-ranking official before the fall, who spared no expense in designing this place as his dream home. The materials used were the absolute best on the market. They even added specialized alloy framing and acoustic insulation into the walls—sturdy, highly secure, soundproof, warm in the winter, and cool in the summer!
“It’s just a shame that early on in the crisis… well, the owner didn’t make it. The house has sat vacant ever since, but the base has kept it in pristine condition.”
The gate swung open, and the group stepped through the courtyard and into the villa, immediately greeted by a striking sense of open grandeur.
The first floor featured a soaring double-height ceiling. Though the massive crystal chandelier hung unlit, its intricate frame remained breathtaking, and natural sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, filling the space with warm brilliance.
The adjacent dining area had more than enough room for a long banquet table seating over a dozen people.
The kitchen was split into separate Chinese and Western cooking zones. While the power was currently off, the recessed outlets and dedicated plumbing for built-in appliances were all intact.
“This living room… isn’t it almost too huge?” Li Yu couldn’t help whispering in awe. “My voice practically echoes in here.”
Jiang Lin agreed with a nod. “The dining room is massive too. With all of us eating together, we’ll never have to worry about bumping elbows again.”
Beyond the main living, dining, and kitchen areas, the first floor housed a guest bedroom with an en-suite bath, as well as another slightly smaller bedroom tucked past the curve of the staircase.
Ascending the graceful spiral staircase to the second floor, they reached a semi-open central lounge. Adding a couple of plush sofas and a coffee table would turn it into a wonderfully cozy relaxation area.
To the left lay two expansive south-facing master suites, each boasting a large walk-in closet, plenty of natural sunlight, and a modern bathroom with separate wet and dry zones.
“I love this room!” Lin Weiwei fell in love with the suite with the private balcony at first glance, unable to hide the fond longing in her eyes.
To the right were two more well-proportioned bedrooms. One was exceptionally large, seemingly created by merging two standard rooms into one. Alongside the spacious sleeping area, walk-in closet, and lavish bathroom featuring a high-end whirlpool tub, it even connected directly to a private fitness room equipped with stationary exercise gear.
“Now this is a proper setup!” Wang Qiang slapped his thigh in delight. “A place to sleep and train all in one—super convenient!”
Young Zhao Yu had already been scampering eagerly between the empty rooms, shouting in delight, “It’s so huge!”
The third floor was a world of its own. It had fewer bedrooms, but each placed a heavy emphasis on total privacy and comfort, featuring wide outdoor terraces or curved viewing balconies. From up there, one enjoyed an unobstructed, sweeping view across the entire villa district and the sprawling base beyond.
“This terrace is incredible!” Li Yu leaned against the railing of a curved balcony, pointing out the view to Jiang Lin. “Imagine sitting out here in the evening, enjoying the cool breeze and watching the stars. How amazing would that be?”
Chu Yang toured the property thoroughly, inspecting every corner, and found himself completely satisfied.
The villa had an abundance of rooms, well-defined functional zones, and ample space. He had initially worried that a single house might feel cramped for a group of their size.
As it turned out, not only would it comfortably house all eleven of them, but there would still be plenty of room to spare.
A broad smile broke across Chu Yang’s face. Turning toward Jiang Jue, he waited eagerly to hear his thoughts.
Yet while Jiang Jue had inspected every room with the same meticulous care, his expression remained perfectly calm and unreadable throughout, showing none of the obvious excitement or satisfaction displayed by the others.
On the contrary, as his dark, measured gaze swept across the sprawling communal halls and the endless row of bedrooms, a faint, almost imperceptible trace of cool detachment flickered in his eyes.
