Chapter 130: Entering the City
Time passed quickly.
By the time Chu Yang felt he had absorbed most of the energy from the crystal cores in his hands, the sky outside was already beginning to lighten.
He tossed the exhausted, ash-like remnants of the cores onto the floor, stood up from his sleeping mat, and stretched vigorously, his joints popping with faint, satisfying cracks.
“I can’t believe the whole night passed just like that…” he muttered to himself, turning around to rap his knuckles against the partition wall. “Brother Jiang, are you awake?”
“I’m up,” Jiang Jue’s voice came through immediately—calm, steady, and without a trace of morning grogginess. “Are you awake as well? How was your night?”
“It was alright, just way too cramped. My whole body feels stiff from sleeping on the floor,” Chu Yang complained lightly. “What about you?”
“About the same,” Jiang Jue replied simply. “Just resting to conserve strength.”
As the two talked through the thin concrete wall, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed down the corridor.
A young guard, looking to be in his early twenties, walked over holding an electronic keycard. Stopping in front of Jiang Jue’s cell, he swiped the card against the scanner with a sharp beep.
With a soft mechanical click, the heavy iron door popped open a crack.
“Alright, you’re free to come out now,” the young guard said. His voice was crisp and professional, noticeably friendlier than the inspectors from the night before. “Once everyone has gathered, I’ll escort you into the city.”
Jiang Jue nodded and stepped out of the narrow cell. Rolling his slightly stiff shoulders, his gaze instinctively turned toward Chu Yang’s doorway.
The guard moved quickly, swiping his card to unlock Chu Yang’s door as well.
Chu Yang darted out of the cramped space immediately, letting out an exaggerated sigh of relief. “Ah! Finally out! That place was so suffocating and uncomfortable!” With a natural step, he moved to stand right beside Jiang Jue.
Jiang Jue raised a hand and habitually ruffled the messy fringe across Chu Yang’s forehead. Feeling the soft strands beneath his fingertips, his tone softened without him even realizing it. “Was it that bad? Once we find a place to settle down later, you can take a nice hot shower and catch up on your sleep, alright?”
“Definitely!” Chu Yang nodded vigorously, though his brow remained furrowed in distaste. “It was awful. That place is barely fit for humans…”
By then, the others had begun emerging from their respective cubicles one after another.
Su Mubai straightened his collar—which wasn’t even wrinkled—his expression perfectly calm and composed.
Lin Xiao stepped out with a deep scowl, clearly just as dissatisfied with the miserable conditions.
Wang Qiang, Li Yu, and Jiang Lin appeared shortly after, while young Zhao Yu rubbed his sleepy eyes, clearly not fully awake yet.
Lin Weiwei was the last to come out.
Unable to fight off her exhaustion during the night, she had eventually collapsed asleep on the bare concrete. But between the filthy floor and the foul smell, her rest had been thoroughly miserable. Waking up now, she felt as though she were covered in a rancid, sour stench, her hair clinging in greasy strands against her cheeks.
Looking up, she saw Chu Yang laughing and chatting warmly with Jiang Jue just a short distance away, looking refreshed and full of energy. A flash of deep resentment and bitter unwillingness flared uncontrollably in her eyes.
Chu Yang had been smiling, but out of the corner of his eye, he caught the venomous glare before she had time to pull it back.
The easy grin remained on his face, yet a sharp, cold chill flickered deep within his eyes. Turning his head back without acknowledging her, he continued talking to Jiang Jue as if Lin Weiwei were nothing more than insignificant background noise.
The young guard was well aware of how formidable this newcomer group was, so he treated them with great courtesy and a smooth, talkative charm. “Brothers, you can just call me Little Zhang. I’ll be guiding you into the city to get you settled. Why don’t we head over to retrieve your vehicles first? They were parked in the public garage under dedicated supervision last night, so don’t worry—nothing will be missing or damaged.”
The group followed Little Zhang to a spacious garage located near the base’s outer perimeter.
Sure enough, their two off-road vehicles were parked there, completely intact—their large RV having already been stored safely inside Chu Yang’s spatial dimension before entering the city. Aside from the original layer of road dust and old combat scratches, there was no fresh damage to the frames.
Everyone climbed into their respective cars. Chu Yang and Jiang Jue rode up front in the escort vehicle driven by Little Zhang to lead the way, and the small convoy slowly rolled deeper into the base.
The sheer scale of N City Base was immense.
The outer rim consisted of defensive barricades, temporary barracks, and quarantine sectors that had been hastily built or reinforced after the outbreak, giving it a somewhat crude and chaotic appearance.
Yet as the vehicles drove further inward, the surroundings changed noticeably.
The closer they got to the center, the more the city’s pre-apocalyptic structure had been preserved.
N City had originally been a sprawling metropolis with wide arterial boulevards and towering high-rises lining both sides. Although the exterior walls of many buildings bore battle scars and the streets were not as pristine as they once had been, the underlying urban grid and functional layout remained remarkably clear. Shops were open for business along the sidewalks, and a steady flow of pedestrians and vehicles moved along the avenues, showing a distinct sense of order and vitality maintained amidst the post-apocalyptic ruin.
Sitting in the back seat, Chu Yang watched the scenery outside with keen interest, taking the chance to strike up a conversation with their driver. “Brother Little Zhang, how does the leadership work around here? The base looks massive—who’s actually calling the shots?”
Behind the wheel, Little Zhang proved more than happy to explain. “Our N City Base is currently managed and maintained by three major factions.
“The largest, naturally, is the military government. They control the main armed forces, as well as a significant portion of the food and material reserves, keeping general order and manning the outer perimeter defenses.
“The second faction is a powerful coalition of civilian mercenary squads and Ability User groups, led by Master Chen of the ‘Blazing Fire Society.’ They’re extremely strong and handle most of the dangerous scavenging runs and threat-clearing missions outside the walls, giving them a huge amount of influence.
“Lastly, there’s a relatively low-key but vital group called the ‘Reconstruction Committee.’ It’s made up of former municipal officials, engineers, and technical experts. They handle the day-to-day administration, infrastructure projects, and technological recovery inside the base.”
“I see… sounds pretty intricate,” Chu Yang said, nodding thoughtfully. “If we want to find a decent place to settle down, where should we go?”
“Ah, you asked the right guy!” Little Zhang smiled, glancing at Chu Yang through the rearview mirror. “Housing in the base is tight, but there’s a dedicated hall for handling all of that. A capable team like yours definitely shouldn’t be squeezing into communal dorms or flimsy prefab shacks with ordinary refugees. I’ll take you straight to the Settlement Trading Center. You can rent or buy properties there—they have everything from upscale apartments to standalone villas. It all just comes down to what you need and… well, what you can afford to pay.”
As they spoke, the convoy pulled up in front of a newly built, orderly five-story building.
Armed sentries were stationed at the main entrance. While the foot traffic moving in and out wasn’t heavy, the people were well-dressed, with a noticeable presence of capable Ability Users among them.
Little Zhang led the group inside with practiced familiarity, guiding them into a large hall that resembled a modern real estate trading center.
Clerks sat behind partitioned service windows, while a massive, color-coded map of the base’s residential sectors hung prominently across the main wall.
