Chapter 126: N City
Without a word, Lin Xiao drew his long blade. A faint golden shimmer instantly enveloped the steel, honing the edge to a lethal sharpness.
Like a furious lion that had been caged for far too long, he charged straight at the mutated groundhog. His strikes were wide and sweeping, driven by a reckless, self-destructive momentum.
He paid no attention to the flying debris kicked up by the creature’s claws, nor did he bother dodging the earthen spikes that grazed past him; his gaze was locked entirely on the beast before him. His Metal ability granted the blade terrifying cutting power, repeatedly shattering the creature’s earthen armor and carving deep wounds into its flesh. Even when sharp rocks and raking claws tore several bloody gashes across his own arms and shoulders, he fought on as if completely numb to the pain.
“Lin Xiao! Watch it and dodge!” Chu Yang shouted in alarm, stunned by the reckless assault.
Lin Xiao acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing, only pressing his offensive with greater ferocity.
Finally, taking advantage of the split second when Jiang Jue’s lightning bolt paralyzed the creature, Lin Xiao let out a guttural roar and leaped into the air. His blade, wrapped in blazing golden light, cleaved brutally into the beast’s neck, nearly severing its head in a single blow.
With a choked wail, the mutated groundhog crashed heavily onto the asphalt, twitched twice, and went still.
The battle was over. Lin Xiao leaned heavily on his blade, panting for breath. A deep cut on his arm was steadily oozing blood, but he merely glanced at it with complete indifference.
Lin Weiwei was the first to rush forward, her face full of frantic distress. “Brother Lin! You’re bleeding! Does it hurt?…” Reaching out, she tried to inspect the wound.
The moment Lin Xiao had been injured, Su Mubai had instinctively taken two quick steps forward, his brow knit tight with worry. But Lin Weiwei’s sudden arrival and anxious fussing acted like an invisible wall, snapping him back to reality. His steps halted abruptly. Without a word, he took a quiet half-step back and turned his gaze away.
Chu Yang and the others quickly gathered around.
Looking at the bleeding wound on Lin Xiao’s arm and his pale face, Chu Yang clicked his tongue in exasperation. “Old Lin, you’re being way too reckless! Is it bad?”
Lin Xiao shook his head, but his eyes involuntarily bypassed Lin Weiwei, searching for the quiet figure of Su Mubai.
Noticing the direction of his gaze, Chu Yang called out immediately, “Little Bai! Come over and take a look at Old Lin’s arm!”
Lin Weiwei was still clutching Lin Xiao’s sleeve.
Frowning in irritation, Chu Yang snapped, “Lin Weiwei, move aside and let Little Bai treat the wound, will you? Don’t block the way.”
Lin Weiwei’s face turned pale. Biting her lip, she reluctantly released Lin Xiao’s arm and stepped to the side.
Only then did Su Mubai walk over. Looking down at the bleeding laceration, he remained completely silent as a gentle white light coalesced at his fingertips.
The soothing energy of his healing power covered the cut. The bleeding stopped instantly, and the raw flesh knit together, forming a clean scab right before their eyes.
“It’s done,” Su Mubai said in an even, detached voice. Withdrawing his hand, he turned to walk back to the vehicle.
“Little Bai, I—” Lin Xiao panicked, instinctively reaching out to catch his wrist.
Su Mubai seemed to anticipate the move. Shifting his arm slightly, he smoothly dodged the grasp without leaving a trace. Without sparing Lin Xiao a single glance, he walked back to the car with measured steps.
Lin Xiao’s hand hung frozen in mid-air before slowly curling into a tight, trembling fist and dropping limply to his side.
All the strength seemed to drain out of him in an instant. His shoulders slumped, his gaze turning dull and lifeless—looking just like a large dog abandoned by its master, lost and utterly defeated.
Nearby, Wang Qiang had already dug out the crystal core from the beast’s skull. It was an earthy-yellow, peak second-order Earth-type core.
Grinning, he held it out to Jiang Jue. “Boss, here it is.”
Jiang Jue glanced at it but didn’t take it. “It’s an Earth-type core. Keep it and absorb it; it will help strengthen your ability.”
Wang Qiang didn’t stand on ceremony and accepted it happily. “Thanks, Boss! Next time I find a good one for your elements, it’s all yours!”
Jiang Jue looked around at the team, his gaze lingering on the silent Lin Xiao and the impassive Su Mubai, before speaking in a low, commanding voice: “Pack up the gear and take a short breather. We’re picking up the pace. If nothing delays us, we should reach N City by late afternoon.”
“N City?!” Chu Yang’s eyes lit up instantly. The heavy, stifling gloom of the past few days seemed to scatter at the news. “Thank goodness, we’re finally here! This whole trek has been exhausting. Let’s hurry! Once we’re inside the base, the first thing I’m doing is taking a long, hot shower and sleeping for a whole day!”
Everyone’s spirits lifted visibly.
N City Base was the final destination they had pushed toward for so long.
With hope within reach, the convoy set off again, traveling at a noticeably faster speed.
At dusk, as the setting sun painted the horizon in fiery crimson and gold, the towering outline of a massive perimeter wall came into view. Built from thick reinforced concrete and heavy timber, it stood firm against the evening sky.
“That’s N City Base…” Li Yu whispered against the window, her eyes wide with awe and relief.
“It’s so tall… That wall looks even more imposing than an ancient fortress,” Jiang Lin added softly, her voice filled with the quiet emotion of finally reaching sanctuary.
Every eye remained glued to the approaching stronghold.
The engines let out a deep, steady roar as the drivers pressed down on the gas, speeding toward the massive city gates.
Before long, the convoy pulled up to the entrance.
Guarding the gate were four sentries in matching dark-gray uniforms, their backs straight, standard-issue rifles held ready, and sharp eyes scanning every newcomer. Further inside, a young man wearing glasses sat behind a simple wooden desk, diligently logging entries into a ledger.
A line of seven or eight survivor groups waited ahead of them—mostly small squads of three to five, along with a handful of lone wanderers. Every face was worn down by the brutal journey, eyes clouded with deep wariness and exhaustion.
When it was Jiang Jue’s turn, a guard captain in his forties with a trimmed beard and a scar near his eye strode over.
His sharp gaze swept across the group, pausing briefly on the bulging packs carried by Chu Yang and Lin Xiao. When he spoke, his voice was steady and carried unquestionable authority: “First time here? Base regulations require an entry toll per head: ten first-order crystal cores per person, or an equivalent value in food, medicine, or purified water. If you can’t pay, turn around now. Don’t hold up the line.”
Hearing the price, Chu Yang muttered inwardly, Ten cores each? That’s practically highway robbery.
Yet looking around, he noticed the survivors ahead were paying without a fuss—some quietly counting out cores, others handing over a small sack of rice or a bottle of antibiotics. No one complained, and no one tried to haggle; there was only a quiet, resigned acceptance.
“We’ll pay with crystal cores,” Jiang Jue answered calmly, his expression entirely unreadable.
Chu Yang didn’t waste any time. Opening his backpack—covertly retrieving the items from his spatial dimension—he pulled out a heavy cloth pouch in plain view of the guards.
Untying the cord, he revealed a bag packed to the brim with glittering, multi-colored crystal cores.
