Chapter 33: Two Men Walk in Through the Restaurant Entrance
Two men walked in through the restaurant entrance wearing the standard uniforms of Revival Base, drenched in foul sweat.
Su Han recognized them; they were part of the entourage that had escorted Cheng Ruoyan when she brought them back to the base.
He ducked his head slightly to keep from being recognized.
The men took their seats and lavishly ordered a whole table full of dishes. Before long, several more teammates trickled in from outside, quickly crowding the modest eatery to capacity.
“I’m dead on my feet. Let’s shovel this down and go crash. I spent the whole damn day at the wheel without closing my eyes once. Fuck, when you’re that tired, you just have to power through—didn’t even have a smoke to keep me awake.”
“Didn’t the haul we brought back include cigarettes? Why don’t you put in a request with Miss Cheng for a couple of cartons?”
“Fat chance. There were only a few cartons in the first place.” The man cast a wary glance toward the entrance and pitched his voice low. “With an addiction as heavy as Cheng Gaolang’s, you think he’d leave any for us?”
“Aiya, at best he’s just a pack mule. So what if his spatial dimension can carry a lot? In the end, doesn’t he still have to spit every single scrap back out?”
The men joked and bantered freely, entirely unconcerned about being overheard.
Hearing Cheng Gaolang’s name, Su Han held his breath even more carefully.
Over the past few days, he had poked around for intel. As the sole spatial ability user in Revival Base, Cheng Gaolang was something of a celebrity. Yet owing to the delicate nature of a spatial power, he was never entrusted with true authority.
After all, no leader with half a brain would leave their lifeline tucked inside someone else’s personal void.
Consequently, Cheng Gaolang was treated more like a zero-weight pack mule. Every item he tucked away into his space was meticulously inventoried, and he was required to cough up the exact tally down to the letter.
“Where’s Cheng Gaolang anyway? Headed back to report in?”
“Probably having a reunion with his family, who knows.” The man waved a dismissive hand.
Learning that Cheng Gaolang wasn’t here, Su Han instantly lost interest in eavesdropping.
Picking up his chopsticks, he shoveled several heaps of food into his mouth, chewing vigorously to finish quickly and clear out.
He had barely taken two bites when a heavy weight dropped onto his shoulder.
Startled, Su Han looked back—right into Shen Chengyin’s darkly clouded gaze.
His cheeks bulging with food, he mumbled around a full mouth, “Shen Chengyin? Wha’s up?”
A faint, ambiguous smirk tugged at the corner of the man’s lips. Leaning down, he brought his mouth close to Su Han’s ear:
“I hear I have erectile dysfunction?”
“And that I ran through the streets stark naked?”
“A swindler who cons people into fake marriages and breaks hearts?”
Su Han’s eyes went round as saucers, his spine snapping rigidly upright in sheer terror.
Averting his gaze in a panic, he played dumb. “What are you talking about? Where did you hear such crazy rumors? I—I totally believe you aren’t that kind of person…”
The soldiers at the neighboring table had caught onto the commotion by now, turning around with amused grins to enjoy the show.
“Why don’t you come back with me and explain it?” Shen Chengyin’s smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Su Han forced himself to swallow the mouthful of food, a sheen of grease glistening at the corner of his lips.
“We can always talk about this later! Haha, I actually have an urgent errand to run right now—hey, hey, hey! What do you think you’re doing?!”
Wasting no more breath, the man seized Su Han by the arm with one hand, hooked his other arm around the boy’s waist, and in two swift motions hoisted him squarely over his shoulder.
The world flipped violently upside down, and the food Su Han had just choked down nearly came rushing right back up.
Shen Chengyin strode toward the door, his hard shoulder digging brutally into Su Han’s gut and churning his stomach into knots.
Behind them, the soldiers broke into raucous applause, letting out a chorus of rowdy whistles.
Draped helplessly over Shen Chengyin’s back, Su Han pounded on the man’s shoulders, breaking out in a cold sweat of pure panic.
Finished. It was all fucking over!
“Wait, Shen Chengyin, hear me out! …Those—those are all lies! Someone in the base must be jealous of your good looks and spread slander! It really had nothing to do with me—!”
