Chapter 57
In the afternoon at kindergarten, Tang Rong excitedly shared with the children in class how he had lost a tail-wrestling match to the little snow leopard, with a clear undertone of my leopard is super amazing in his voice.
It made Bai Tu’s blood boil with excitement. He was already impatient to compete with the little snow leopard himself.
Bai Tu said, “Little Rong, when you come to my house as a guest next weekend, bring the little snow leopard too.”
Tang Rong said, “Okay!”
Then Bai Tu turned to Shen Muhan, who was standing nearby. “Little Han-brother, are you free next weekend? You can come to my house with little Rong. We can all wrestle tails with the little snow leopard together.”
After the arm-wrestling incident, Bai Tu and Shen Muhan had grown much closer.
The little snow leopard himself, Shen Muhan: “…We’ll see when the time comes. It’s still early.”
That was true.
There were still nearly two weeks left—almost half a month.
No need to rush.
The other three children also really wanted to meet offline, but Luo Yue and Luo Xing were following their mother on an off-world film shoot and weren’t on the capital planet. They said they’d ask their dad to buy some postcards from that planet tonight and mail them over. Qi Fu was also off-world with his parents on business, so he wasn’t on the capital planet either. He probably wouldn’t be back until the end of the year, and said he’d bring back local specialty food for everyone when he returned.
So the children all made an early promise to have an offline gathering at the end of the year.
…
Before school ended, Shen Muhan once again couldn’t help pulling Tang Rong out into the classroom courtyard to whisper privately with him.
Shen Muhan said, “Little Rong, I… have a friend who, for unavoidable reasons, lied to another friend about something. Recently he’s wanted to come clean, but he’s afraid the other person will get angry. If it were you, would you forgive a friend who lied to you?”
Last time, he had only indirectly asked little Rong how he would feel if someone did something that made him angry. This time, he was more specific—specific enough to say it was about having lied to him.
The system was practically dying of laughter.
If its host were fourteen this year instead of four, he definitely wouldn’t believe this so-called friend story.
But the four-year-old little cub not only believed it, he also started thinking seriously about it.
After a while, the little cub answered, “I really hate people who lie to me. If it were me, I wouldn’t forgive that friend easily.”
Back on the garbage planet, there had once been a neighbor who kept lying to him, saying Grandma was only raising him so she could sell him later. A little child like him could be sold for several thousand star coins, especially a pretty child like him. After being sold, the buyer might even break his legs and make him beg on the streets for pity money, turning him into a tool for earning money.
Because of that lie, Tang Rong had been on edge for a very long time. Every time Grandma tried to hold him, he cried. It wasn’t until Grandma finally figured out the reason and exposed the neighbor’s lie that the fear inside him truly disappeared.
That neighbor had been a rough middle-aged man who always sat outside smoking and often beat his wife and children too. Grandma was old, and Tang Rong had been too young, so they didn’t dare rip things apart with that neighbor or openly clash with him. They could only pretend nothing had happened and continue maintaining the surface appearance of neighborly relations.
That was exactly why Tang Rong especially hated being lied to.
When he heard that, Shen Muhan’s world was struck by a bolt from the blue.
He had wanted to say more, but then Tang Rong added, “Lying is really bad. Little Han-brother should stay away from that friend.”
Shen Muhan: “…Mm.”
He had originally wanted to joke and ask, What if it were me who lied to you? But now he no longer dared.
…
After school, when Tang Rong got home, the baby bottle he had bought for the little snow leopard in the livestream finally arrived.
It had shipped from a warehouse on a farther-away planet, so it arrived rather late.
The butler had already told him ahead of time that after opening the package, he had to wash and sterilize the bottle first.
The moment school ended, Tang Rong stepped out of the learning pod, carried the little snow leopard with him, and went to get the little baby bottle, planning to make a bottle of milk himself and feed it to the little snow leopard.
For some reason, the little snow leopard seemed listless that evening. Its tail drooped, it had no energy at all, and its body was all soft, as though it had no bones.
Unlike before, it didn’t take the initiative to rub against the little cub’s cheeks or curl its little tail around his wrist.
Right now, the little snow leopard’s mind was full of only one sentence:
“I really hate people who lie to me.”
Full of worry, the little snow leopard bit down on its own tail and kept gnawing on it in a compulsive sort of way.
Tang Rong was busy making the milk and didn’t notice that something was a little off. After setting the little snow leopard down on the sofa, he went to wash his hands and get the bottle ready.
The butler, however, carefully noticed that something wasn’t right. He came over to the sofa and quietly asked, “What’s wrong? Is some part of your body uncomfortable?”
Tang Rong was only a short distance away, so the butler didn’t use the honorific form he usually did.
The little snow leopard paused its tail-chewing for a few seconds, shook its little head, and then continued gnawing.
There was no use telling them anyway. They could all just wait together to coax little Rong later and beg for his forgiveness.
The milk powder came in small packets, and the water dispenser had already been adjusted to the proper temperature. Tang Rong quickly returned with a freshly made bottle of milk.
Seeing this, the butler didn’t ask further questions. He just thought he would ask again later.
Tang Rong picked up the little bottle, lifted the little snow leopard into his arms, and cradled it like a little baby with its tummy facing upward, nestled in against him. With one hand, he took the little tail out of its mouth, then brought the bottle to its lips.
“Baby, drink your milk.”
The little snow leopard obediently latched onto it and suckled a few times.
At this hour, it had already been a little hungry to begin with, and after just a few sucks, the little snow leopard couldn’t stop anymore. It ended up draining the whole bottle in one go.
This was Tang Rong’s first time feeding milk to a fluffy little animal, and the experience felt especially fresh and exciting. His eyes sparkled as he watched it suck on the nipple, his mood unbelievably good.
“Does baby want more?”
Seeing how much the little cub seemed to enjoy watching it drink milk, and not being quite full yet himself, the little snow leopard gave a little “miwu” of agreement and sucked a couple more times at the now-empty bottle.
Tang Rong immediately went off and made another bottle of milk for him.
The butler had originally wanted to stop him, thinking that this much milk in one day was already enough. After all, they both drank a cup of milk every morning, which meant the little snow leopard had already had two servings today if this one were included. But seeing that the little snow leopard looked much more energetic after drinking the milk, he thought it over and ultimately said nothing.
Breaking the rules once in a while and drinking a little extra wasn’t a big deal.
And so Tang Rong fed the little snow leopard a second bottle.
It wasn’t until Tang Rong was preparing to make a third bottle that the butler finally stepped in and stopped him.
“It’s time to eat.”
That was right—dinner still hadn’t happened yet.
Tang Rong obediently set down the bottle and went with the little snow leopard to the dining room to eat.
After dinner, the butler observed that the little snow leopard really did seem much more energetic. Maybe before, it had simply been in a bad mood, and being fed milk by little Rong had cheered it up.
Children’s emotions came quickly and left quickly too, so there was no need to worry too much.
After dinner, as usual, the butler went out into the courtyard to tend to the flowers and plants and at the same time digest his meal.
But instead of immediately taking the little snow leopard out for a walk, Tang Rong picked up the little baby bottle again and made another bottle of milk for the little snow leopard.
Once you fed milk to a fluffy little creature even a single time, it became addictive.
By now, after two bottles of milk and dinner, the little snow leopard was already somewhat overfull. But seeing how expectant the little cub looked, he hesitated and still obediently latched onto the nipple again, finishing off a third bottle too.
In Tang Rong’s mind, milk was a very, very good thing. Little cubs who got to drink milk were especially happy. Deep down, he didn’t really have a concept of too much milk being bad for the body, and besides, the little snow leopard was so cooperative and willing to drink it, without showing any resistance at all.
Just as Tang Rong was preparing a fourth bottle, the system finally spoke up:
[Um… Host, isn’t this a bit too much milk? Wouldn’t it be bad for the body? Maybe wait until tomorrow to feed more?]
The system knew that for an ordinary fluffy little animal, drinking this much milk definitely wouldn’t be okay. But when it came to spirit forms, it wasn’t too sure. Since the little snow leopard seemed so willing to drink it, maybe it wasn’t a problem?
Still, its experience far exceeded that of a four-year-old cub, and it knew the principle that too much of anything was bad. It was better not to feed quite that much.
Hearing that, Tang Rong clutched the little bottle and thought it over. It really did seem like he might have fed a little too much. Although he still hadn’t had enough of the experience, he was also afraid of harming the little snow leopard’s health, so he set the bottle down and came back empty-handed.
The little snow leopard was sitting curled up on the sofa, tightly biting its own tail, and looked at Tang Rong as he approached. Seeing that he wasn’t holding the baby bottle anymore, it quietly let out a sigh of relief in its heart.
Tang Rong directly picked him up into his arms.
With that movement of being lifted, and the jostling of his body, the little snow leopard—who had been biting its tail to suppress the discomfort in its stomach—couldn’t hold it in any longer and suddenly threw up with a loud wah.
…
A few seconds later, the butler, who was still tending the flowers and plants in the courtyard, heard a little cub’s panicked cry.
“Uncle… wuwu, baby… baby threw up… wuwuwu, baby is sick…”
