Chapter 47
The little snow leopard’s sudden flash of inspiration came from a few episodes of the cartoon it had recently watched together with Tang Rong.
One of those episodes was about a group of fluffy little animals gathered together playing Truth or Dare. Truth wasn’t especially interesting, but if someone picked Dare, then the others could order that person to do something.
Another episode was about the little animals sharing special cards they had drawn themselves—gift cards, snack cards, errand cards, hug cards… each card could be used once.
The little snow leopard thought that if Xiao Rong lost and picked Dare, then it would make him draw an Anger-Free Card for it.
That way, when the day came for Xiao Rong to learn that the little snow leopard was actually Shen Muhan, it could pull out that Anger-Free Card and use it to win Xiao Rong’s forgiveness.
Once it thought of it, it acted right away!
That very night, the little snow leopard secretly slipped into the bathroom, sat on the closed lid of the smart toilet, and quickly downloaded a Truth or Dare app onto its optical brain.
Once the download was done, it lifted a paw and skillfully pressed the flush button again, then returned to the bedroom with its tail in its mouth and curled up beside Tang Rong’s pillow.
The next day, once they arrived in class, Tang Rong cheerfully shared with the other children the little dress he had bought for the little snow leopard.
That morning, Butler Uncle had checked the delivery tracking for him. The package had shipped from a warehouse on the neighboring planet, had already arrived safely on the main planet this morning, and was now on its way to the house. It would arrive today.
All the little children were excited, except Shen Muhan.
The moment he thought about how, once the dress arrived today, Xiao Rong would put it on the little snow leopard, take photos, and then bring those photos to class tomorrow to show this entire group of little children, Shen Muhan felt an overwhelming urge to transfer schools together with Tang Rong.
In order to end this topic, Shen Muhan suddenly spoke up. “Does everyone want to play Truth or Dare?”
At once, every child’s attention was drawn over.
Tang Rong had only recently seen the rules of Truth or Dare in the cartoon, so he wasn’t unfamiliar with it. The moment Shen Muhan brought it up, his interest was strongly stirred, and he immediately said, “I want to play.”
Shen Muhan opened the game he had downloaded onto his optical brain the night before, and after giving a simple explanation to the children who didn’t know what it was, he won everyone’s unanimous approval.
So Teacher Tangyuan rearranged all the chairs into a circle, placing the Truth or Dare screen in the middle to make the game easier.
There were several ways to play Truth or Dare—
The first method was to spin for only one person. Whoever the spinner landed on would choose Truth or Dare, then continue by drawing a slip that told them what truth to answer or what dare to carry out.
The second method was for everyone to spin in turn. Whoever got selected would make a choice, and then the spinner could, within reason, order them to answer a truth or do a dare.
Actually, the first mode was more suitable for little children. But in order to get an Anger-Free Card from Tang Rong, Shen Muhan selfishly chose the second mode instead.
The second mode came with certain risks too. There weren’t many children in the class, but it was still possible to have terrible luck and never land on Xiao Rong at all.
If his luck really was that bad, then there was nothing he could do.
Shen Muhan was the one who had proposed the game, and the other children all listened to him, so Teacher Tangyuan didn’t say anything.
In the first round, Shen Muhan spun first. While the virtual pointer was spinning, Shen Muhan silently prayed in his heart—
Please land on Xiao Rong, please land on Xiao Rong, please land on Xiao Rong…
Unfortunately, things went against his wishes. The pointer eventually stopped right in front of Bai Tu.
Bai Tu instinctively bit his lower lip. On his very first time playing the game, he was already picked, so naturally he felt somewhat wronged and uneasy. Still, he softly said, “I choose Truth.”
He absolutely did not want the scary little boy to order him to do some dare.
Shen Muhan had no real interest in him and casually asked, “Do you like your dad more or your mom more?”
Bai Tu blinked, completely stumped by the question. He thought about it for over a full minute, and his eyes grew so anxious they almost turned red.
Both his dad and mom treated him especially, especially well. He loved them both very much. If he had to answer which one he liked more, that was far too hard.
Shen Muhan: “…”
Shen Muhan: “Saying you like both is fine too. Next.”
The redness around Bai Tu’s eyes finally stopped there and didn’t deepen.
Next was Tang Rong. He lifted his little hand and touched the screen, and the virtual pointer began spinning quickly.
Under several pairs of watchful eyes, the pointer gradually slowed down and finally stopped in front of Shen Muhan.
Shen Muhan hadn’t expected that he wouldn’t be the one to spin Tang Rong, but would instead be chosen by Tang Rong.
Shen Muhan said, “I choose Dare.”
He didn’t mind whatever dare Tang Rong might assign him. It probably wouldn’t be anything too difficult.
And besides, if he chose Dare, then when it was his turn to land on Tang Rong later, Tang Rong would also be more willing to choose Dare.
Tang Rong thought for a few seconds, then his eyes lit up. “Do a few little snow leopard calls.”
Shen Muhan: “…”
That really wasn’t difficult for him. Probably no one in the room was better at little snow leopard sounds than he was.
But… it was so embarrassing.
In little snow leopard form, he could meow and call out as much as he wanted. But once he was in human form, he found it strangely difficult to open his mouth.
Under several direct stares, Shen Muhan swallowed a few times, steeled himself, and finally let out a tiny little sound, quiet as a mosquito:
“Meowu.”
“A little louder. I couldn’t hear you clearly,” Tang Rong said, not because he wanted to make things difficult for him, but because the sound really had been too soft. He genuinely couldn’t hear it.
To Tang Rong, little snow leopard sounds were especially cute, and he himself had even imitated them on the first day of school during introductions, so he had no way of understanding Shen Muhan’s embarrassment.
“Meowu.” Shen Muhan raised the volume a little.
“A little louder.”
“Meowu.” Shen Muhan’s ears turned red.
At last, Tang Rong was satisfied.
Then it was the next child’s turn.
…
A whole round later, it came back to Shen Muhan. Once again, he silently prayed in his heart—please land on Xiao Rong.
The pointer gradually slowed, and under the watch of several warm gazes, it stopped in front of Bai Tu once again.
Shen Muhan: “…”
Bai Tu: “…”
Bai Tu trembled and once again spoke in a small voice. “I choose Truth.”
Shen Muhan took a deep breath. Not wanting to waste time, he deliberately went easy on him. “What’s your favorite food?”
“Carrots!” Bai Tu answered, instantly relieved.
When it was Tang Rong’s turn again, this time he didn’t land on Shen Muhan, but on Luo Xing instead.
Luo Xing chose Truth.
Tang Rong thought for a moment, then asked, “What’s the thing that makes you the most nervous?”
Luo Xing didn’t hesitate at all and answered, “Xiao Mi getting spayed.”
Xiao Mi was the name of the cat they kept at home.
At once, Shen Muhan had a very bad premonition.
Sure enough, Tang Rong blinked and asked curiously, “What is spaying?”
Luo Xing immediately began explaining what spaying was, why it was done, and when it should be done.
After listening, Tang Rong nodded thoughtfully and said, “When Baby grows up, I’ll get him neutered too.”
Shen Muhan: “…”
He knew it.
The system, silently watching, was laughing so hard it nearly passed out. Luckily it had muted itself in advance, or the host probably would have been startled by its laughter.
And so, until school ended and the game was forced to stop, Shen Muhan’s mood remained at a very low point.
Not only had he failed to land on Tang Rong even once and get the Anger-Free Card he wanted, he had also dug so many holes for himself.
Seeing that school was almost over, Shen Muhan steeled himself, took the initiative to hold Tang Rong’s little hand, and led him out into the yard beyond the classroom.
Tang Rong obediently let himself be led along. Looking at him in confusion, he asked, “Big Brother Xiao Han, what’s wrong?”
This wasn’t the first time Shen Muhan had taken him out into the yard to whisper privately, so Tang Rong was more or less used to it already. He just didn’t know what it was about this time.
Shen Muhan hesitantly said, “If… if I did something that made you unhappy and made you angry, what would happen?”
Tang Rong looked at him in complete confusion, not understanding why he was suddenly bringing this up.
He didn’t ask any questions back, only quickly shook his head and answered, “You wouldn’t.”
Big Brother Xiao Han wouldn’t do anything to make him unhappy or angry. Even if he did do something wrong, that was okay too. No one never made mistakes.
“I won’t get angry at Big Brother Xiao Han.”
The heart Shen Muhan had been holding high was gently set down a little. He knew that Xiao Rong probably just couldn’t imagine him doing something that would truly make him angry. Once he actually learned the truth, maybe he really would stop talking to him forever.
Shen Muhan was anxious to death inside, but he had no solution. He could only brazenly push further and say, “Really? Then draw me an Anger-Free Card.”
That was the real reason he had brought Tang Rong out here.
Since he hadn’t managed to get it through Truth or Dare, he would just ask for it directly.
Tang Rong blinked and said, “Okay.”
Right in front of Shen Muhan, Tang Rong opened his optical brain, tapped it a few times, and a sheet of paper and a pen instantly appeared in his hand.
Everything inside the virtual classroom was simulated. Teacher Tangyuan had already taught them how to use the optical brain to get simple stationery and how to save the things they created.
So Tang Rong immediately lowered his head and began drawing on the paper.
Very quickly, Shen Muhan received the piece of paper.
On it was a chibi little snow leopard head, while on the back were the childish, carefully copied words: Anger-Free Card.
He had drawn the snow leopard head because writing only a few words by themselves felt too plain, and since they both liked little snow leopards, he had added it on the side.
“Is this okay?” Tang Rong’s eyes curved like little crescent moons.
Shen Muhan gave a muffled hum, tightened his grip on the paper slightly, and looked away. “Okay.”
Every learning pod came with an inventory, similar to a backpack in a holographic game, where you could store anything you wanted.
Shen Muhan immediately put the Anger-Free Card away into it, then once again took Tang Rong’s little hand, led him back into the classroom, said goodbye to the teacher, and requested to log out of the learning pod.
The other children in the class had already left, especially the Luo Yue and Luo Xing twins, who were rushing eagerly home to watch Jiuwei’s livestream.
Only the two of them were left, having gone out to whisper secrets.
Shen Muhan still left the learning pod before Tang Rong did.
The little snow leopard inside the pod opened its glacier-blue eyes, light and clear like icebergs at sea. With a nimble leap, it quickly came to its little nest, curled itself up there, rested its head on its fluffy tail, and looked toward Tang Rong’s learning pod, its thoughts still fixed on the image of that Anger-Free Card.
If it had known things would go this smoothly… it never would have gone through all the trouble of trying to make Truth or Dare work. It could have just asked Xiao Rong directly.
If anyone asked, the answer was simple—it regretted it immensely.
A few seconds later, the little child inside the learning pod slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he did after coming out of the pod, as always, was walk straight over to the nest, pick up his little snow leopard, and pet it for a while.
The little snow leopard vented its feelings with several aggrieved little “meowu meowu” cries in his arms.
Still, making sounds in the little snow leopard’s body felt much more comfortable. It was so much more natural than making noises in a human body.
Tang Rong only assumed that it had simply missed him too much, so he kissed the fluffy little head a few more times while carrying the little snow leopard out of the study. As he did, he asked the butler, “Uncle, how old is Baby? What day was he born? When can he be neutered?”
Big Sister Xiao Xing had said that after neutering, some illnesses could be avoided and the animal might even live longer.
Even though Baby was still little and only a snow leopard cub now, Tang Rong knew that many animals didn’t live as long as humans did. He hoped Baby could stay with him for a longer time.
The butler was so stunned by the question that he genuinely suspected his ears had malfunctioned.
Neutering? …Neutering the little crown prince?
…What???
The butler’s gaze shifted downward and unexpectedly met the little snow leopard’s pair of ice-blue eyes filled with grievance.
Butler: “…”
The butler immediately guessed that Tang Rong must have learned something at kindergarten—perhaps another child’s little pet had been neutered—and was now applying it directly to his own little snow leopard.
He gave a light cough and smoothly changed the subject. “Baby is still little. No need to rush things like that. The package you bought yesterday has arrived. Uncle already brought it to the house for you, so hurry and open it.”
Tang Rong’s attention was successfully diverted. Immediately, he ran over excitedly with the little snow leopard in his arms and eagerly tore the package open.
This was something he had been looking forward to all day long.
After the shock of the whole neutering matter, the little snow leopard now no longer had any temper left to spare for this little dress.
Since it was already here, there was no way it wasn’t going to be worn.
The little dress was blue and white, decorated with a bit of semi-transparent lace, giving it a very fairy-tale-like design.
Tang Rong immediately lifted the little snow leopard into his arms, put the little dress on it, and then tied the matching bow accessory onto its fluffy tail.
The little snow leopard tapped the tail now weighed down by the big bow and wore a face full of complete life despair.
“Baby looks so pretty.” Tang Rong praised him while setting him down on the sofa, kneeling on the carpet in front of it and taking lots and lots of photos, absolutely delighted.
Originally, the little snow leopard had planned that once the dress was put on, after just a little while it would pretend to be uncomfortable and wriggle free from it. That way, it would both satisfy Xiao Rong’s wish to dress it up and also cut off the possibility of him ever dressing it in this kind of thing again. But after seeing the little child’s smiling face so close in front of him, for some reason, all of that resistance suddenly drained away.
If it made Xiao Rong this happy… then it would reluctantly sacrifice itself a little.
Anyway, once Xiao Rong found out that the little snow leopard was Shen Muhan, he wouldn’t dress it up like this anymore.
For just this final stretch of time, it could endure a Xiao Humiliation and cooperate. It wasn’t the end of the world.
But who would have guessed that after taking pictures and videos for a while, Tang Rong suddenly placed a video call to Snow Leopard Auntie from his friends list.
The moment the little snow leopard saw his own mother appear on the other end of the screen, it froze into stone.
Han Zhi first stared blankly for a few seconds, and then, once she fully realized what she was seeing, directly burst into a smile she couldn’t control.
Afraid of scaring Xiao Rong, she leaned the sunglass-covered part of her face closer to the optical brain screen so her laughter, which had nearly turned into a full-body shake, wouldn’t be too obvious.
Th-this little thing in the dress and the bow… was actually her son?!
Truthfully, Han Zhi had once entertained the idea of putting her son into a little dress too. Since he had been small and not very likely to remember things clearly, there wouldn’t have been any real harm in playing around a little—especially if it had been in his fluffy spirit-form state.
Unfortunately, her son had matured too early and refused no matter what.
Who would have thought that this old, long-dead wish would suddenly come true one day so unexpectedly?
As expected of Xiao Rong.
On the surface, her son looked as though he was trying to woo someone—sending flower crowns, sending rings—but in reality, her son had long since been tamed into something closer to a little puppy. He was obedient to an astonishing degree.
What a pity her husband had been busy lately and was again tied up with official work tonight, so he couldn’t immediately share this sight with her.
Han Zhi quickly snapped several screenshots and sent them separately to her husband and to Tang Rong’s father.
The reason for sending them to the former was naturally just to share.
The reason for sending them to the latter was so he could see just how his little child had his son wrapped around his finger, and maybe tone down a bit of that vinegar-like jealousy and sense of crisis.
Afraid the person on the other side might not be able to see clearly, Tang Rong deliberately aimed the optical brain camera directly at the little snow leopard sitting primly on the sofa. After adjusting the angle a bit, he asked, “Auntie, doesn’t he look pretty?”
“He looks especially pretty,” Han Zhi said, doing her best to suppress her laughter. “Is this the only one?”
The camera was practically pressed right against the leopard’s face. The little snow leopard was already depressed enough inside, and now that its own mother had made such a pointed remark, it immediately pushed its head even closer to the lens. Seen from below, the angle made it look especially fierce, as if silently issuing a warning.
What did she mean, the only one? Was she trying to nudge Xiao Rong into buying more, or planning to buy some herself?
Unfortunately, no matter how hard it tried to look fierce, it was still just a little cub leopard. To the leopard mom on the other side, it only looked adorably fierce.
Still, Han Zhi knew better than to go too far. Her son had matured earlier than most and already had a fairly strong sense of gender. If he didn’t want it, forcing him wouldn’t be right.
“Yes, I only bought one. Once I earn lots and lots more money later, I’ll buy new ones for Baby,” Tang Rong’s voice sounded from off screen.
“Good,” Han Zhi said to herself. What a good little child. No wonder her son liked playing with him so much. It was very hard not to like a child like this.
Seeing that the little snow leopard had pressed itself too close to the camera, Tang Rong reached out and pulled it back a little.
The little snow leopard immediately flicked the tail trapped under the big bow, clearly not wanting to continue this display-like video call with his mother, and simply pounced straight into Tang Rong’s arms.
Tang Rong had no choice but to keep holding the little snow leopard while continuing the call with Auntie.
Suddenly thinking of something, Tang Rong asked, “Auntie, when is Baby’s birthday?”
Han Zhi replied, “January 22nd. It was in the middle of a snowy winter. He loves snow very much. When winter comes, you can take him outside to play in the snow. He isn’t afraid of the cold.”
“Meowu.” Hearing his mother finally say something sensible for once, the little snow leopard cried out as if in agreement.
A snow leopard wasn’t afraid of cold at all.
Winter was its favorite season, and snow was what it loved best. It could roll around in snow directly with no problem.
There was absolutely no need for it to wear this ridiculous clothing to stay warm.
Tang Rong naturally counted the little snow leopard’s birthday as January 22nd of this year.
If that was the case, then the little snow leopard was almost a full year old already. So why was it still so small…?
In his memory, kittens only a few months old were already as big as Baby. Baby was a snow leopard, much larger than a cat should be, yet he was almost one year old and still so tiny.
Worry immediately surfaced in Tang Rong’s eyes.
Han Zhi noticed his slightly furrowed brows and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Tang Rong answered honestly, voicing his thoughts. “Is there something wrong with Baby’s body?”
Han Zhi’s heart skipped a beat. “Y-you… do you know something now?”
They hadn’t really planned to keep hiding it from Xiao Rong much longer anyway, so she couldn’t be bothered to keep up the disguise too carefully now.
The little snow leopard nestled in his arms was also jolted, its heartbeat instantly speeding up.
Had Xiao Rong discovered something?
Tang Rong silently thought, just as I thought.
He knew this probably fell into the category of an inborn defect. Back on the junk planet, a neighboring family had a baby born prematurely. That baby had been even smaller than him and had always been sick, pitiful beyond words.
He had to take very good care of Baby.
Tang Rong’s voice drooped as he continued, “Baby’s body is so small, and he isn’t healthy either. Auntie, let’s wait a little longer before giving him the neutering surgery.”
He had asked about the little snow leopard’s birthday specifically so he could calculate the right time for the neutering surgery. Now that he knew the little snow leopard had health problems, it would be better to delay a non-urgent surgery like that.
As for why he didn’t directly give up the idea of neutering altogether—in his subconscious, surgery was something that could make living beings healthier. And Big Sister Xiao Xing had also said that cats got neutered so they could live longer.
Han Zhi: “…?” Huh???
