All The Furry Creatures In The Beast World Are Farming With Me – CH5

Chapter 5

Snow wolves were only one branch of the wolf race. Wolf beastmen were divided by color into many races, including black wolves, brown wolves, gray wolves, and more.

In the beginning, wolves of different colors lived in different regions. For example, the Snow Wolf Tribe had lived in a place that was cold all year round. Their name did not simply refer to their snow-white fur, but also to the long snow season in the area where they lived.

Later, beastmen migrated everywhere, changing their places of residence again and again. Many Snow Wolf tribes had gone through several rounds of territorial changes and no longer remained fixed in one place. Their tribe was the same.

The various tribes occasionally exchanged supplies. Beastmen of the same race were generally closer than beastmen of different races and were more familiar with one another.

As the tribe chief, Lang Yu knew more about those outside tribes than the other beastmen did.

Although they all belonged to the wolf race, each wolf race had different characteristics. Snow wolves were smaller than other wolf races. Even Lang Shi, the largest in their tribe, would only be considered medium-sized in many wolf tribes.

In the place where the Snow Wolf Race had originally lived, there had been many large prey animals. When they did not have the advantage in size, relying on brute force was inefficient. On top of that, snow wolf cubs were born in small numbers, and their tribes had fewer people than other races. So when hunting, they usually improved their success rate and reduced casualties through methods such as luring and ambushing.

Later, even after changing territories, everyone still continued using the old hunting methods. After being passed down generation after generation, many new tactics were also developed according to terrain and other factors.

Some wolf races were different. Some relied purely on endurance, while others used their size advantage to charge straight in. The most famous were the black wolves. Their way of doing things was completely opposite from the Snow Wolf Race. Whether hunting or fighting, they were famously fierce. Minor injuries were not worth mentioning, and major injuries were left to fate.

It was said that no matter the tribe, as long as there were many black wolves in it, the surrounding tribes would not dare provoke them. Everyone feared being targeted by the grudge-holding Black Wolf Race and having them come looking for group fights whenever they had nothing better to do.

Aside from the Black Wolf Race, no race could endure fighting every few days. Not only did black wolves not tire of it, they only grew more ferocious the more they fought. Some black wolves even deliberately picked fights with primitive bodies around their tribe to practice.

Lang Yu had seen black wolves fight other beastmen at the market before. They were extremely fierce.

Thinking of this, Lang Yu reminded his younger brother, “If you see black wolves in the future, remember to stay far away from them.”

Lang Shuo said, “Huh?”

Lang Shuo did not understand how the topic had shifted to black wolves. Weren’t they just talking about cubs?

Lang Yu patiently explained, “The Black Wolf Race really likes fighting. Ever since they were little, they fought before eating. Whoever won ate first, and whoever lost ate leftovers. After growing up, they also look for people to fight at the slightest excuse.”

Black wolves loved fighting both within and outside their tribe. The only difference was that when facing their own tribe members, they would show mercy and not kill them.

Half-dead did not count as dead.

Lang Shuo was filled with solemn respect. Immediately afterward, he felt fortunate.

Luckily, he was a snow wolf. The cubs in their tribe were not as competitive as those in the Black Wolf Tribe either. If he had transmigrated into some black wolf tribe, he would have had only one ending: starving to death.

Lang Shuo knew himself very well. With his current combat ability, he would not even get to eat leftovers in the Black Wolf Race.

Lang Shuo promised his brother, “Don’t worry, Brother. If I see them, I’ll definitely stay very far away so I don’t get caught in the crossfire.”

For some reason, his memories of the migration were extremely blurry. But looking at everyone’s injuries, he could tell just how dangerous it had been. It was many times bloodier than the nature documentaries he had watched in his previous life. After all, the truly cruel scenes in videos would be cut out, but reality would not.

Lang Yu trusted his younger brother very much. Hearing this promise, he knew there was no need to worry.

Lang Shuo did not take the matter of the Black Wolf Race to heart either. He continued discussing the cubs’ food with Lang Yun.

Wolves changed teeth around the age of eight. Before changing teeth, whether they could transform into human form or not, cubs could only eat soft food. Right now, all these cubs stayed together. For convenience, the food they were given was all the same.

Lang Shuo discussed it with Lang Yun. “How about using the stone pot next time? Add less water, then serve the meat and soup together for the cubs.”

This would also let them replenish some fluids. When Lang Shuo heard that the cubs had vomited, he remembered something. Cubs were prone to diarrhea after drinking water, so the tribe generally did not specifically call cubs over to drink. They only gave them a little water when the cubs themselves said they were thirsty.

The reason cubs became ill after drinking water was simple. The water beastmen drank was raw water. Even when the weather was cold and the water needed to be warmed, they would only heat it to room temperature. They would not deliberately boil it and then let it cool.

Thinking of this, Lang Shuo brought up boiling water as well. “Next time, boil the water until it rolls, then pour it into bamboo tubes. Let it cool for a while before giving it to the cubs. That way, the cubs won’t get sick from drinking water. Especially the two cubs with indigestion—they need to drink more water today.”

Those two cubs had vomited everything they had eaten last night. If they were not even given a little water, they would only feel worse.

Hearing Lang Shuo’s words, Lang Yun did not answer immediately. Instead, she waited for Lang Yu to decide.

The tribe’s stone pot had belonged to the old priest. When they left their previous territory, the items they could bring were limited. The stone pot was the heaviest among them. It was a naturally formed large stone that could hold a lot of water. In the past, the tribe only used the stone pot to boil medicinal herbs when a member was injured.

Lang Yu also hesitated.

In the past, a priest’s belongings were supposed to be handed down to the next priest. But when the old priest passed away, he had not chosen a successor. In the end, the items he left behind were temporarily managed by Lang Yu.

The journey had been too dangerous, and too many members of the tribe had been injured. All the medicinal herbs had been used up. Otherwise, they would not have only let Lang Shuo drink water and eat meat these past two days. Among the old priest’s belongings, only that stone pot remained. Logically speaking, it should not be taken out until a new priest appeared in the tribe.

But…

Lang Yu’s gaze paused on Lang Shuo and the cubs for a long while.

Lang Yu had never heard the idea that water had to be boiled until it rolled so cubs would not get sick. But since Lang Shuo said it, he was willing to try. Just like yesterday’s roasted meat, it had not cost the members anything, yet they had gained a delicious meal.

Moreover, the tribe currently had no new priest. The stone pot would only sit there unused. If they had medicine, they could still use it to brew medicine for Lang Shuo. But now, even that only function was gone. It would be better to follow what Lang Shuo said.

The cubs could not go without drinking water forever. Yet they were prone to illness when they drank water. This was a problem that troubled every beastman who cared for cubs.

Back in their previous territory, the cubs’ mothers would be given extra food. But food had been insufficient on the road, and there had been nothing extra to distribute. All the cubs in the tribe had been weaned, including a few that were less than a year old.

They could not go on like this. The cubs could not keep avoiding water, and every time they were given water was a challenge. Perhaps Lang Shuo’s method really would work.

After thinking it over, Lang Yu finally said to Lang Yun, “Take it and use it.”

With Lang Yu’s approval, Lang Yun called outside and summoned Lang Nuo over to help.

Lang Nuo was a few months younger than Lang Shuo and was also in the sub-adult stage. His shoulder was a little injured, but he had been hurt earlier, so he was almost healed now. These past few days, Lang Nuo and the other sub-adults of similar age had been eager to join the hunt, but Lang Yu had pressed them back down. They had only just arrived here. Hunting was already harder than before. If they added sub-adults participating in hunts for the first time, the difficulty would only increase.

Lang Nuo was at an age where he could not sit still. Hearing Lang Yun’s voice, he happily ran in. But when he heard that they were moving the stone pot, his face wrinkled into a ball.

“You’re boiling medicine? Doesn’t the tribe have no medicine left?”

As he spoke, he looked toward Lang Shuo with a trace of sympathy in his eyes.

When Lang Nuo had first been injured, the tribe still had medicine. He and two other injured members had drunk a pot together. After drinking it, he had only one thought: no wonder everyone said they were cured after drinking medicine.

At the time, he could only lie on his stomach while talking to people, yet he had loudly shouted at Lang Yun that he did not hurt anymore and did not need medicine. But the wound on his back was blatantly there. In the end, he had been forced to drink it for three days.

Medicinal herbs were precious. Every bit used meant a bit less. The tribe only used them for members with serious injuries. Right now, the only severely injured member in the tribe was Lang Shuo, so the medicine was definitely for him.

Thinking that the other would soon have to drink an entire pot of strange-tasting medicine by himself, the sympathy in Lang Nuo’s eyes nearly overflowed.

Lang Shuo had originally been waiting for the siblings Lang Yun and Lang Nuo to move the stone pot over so he could personally see its size and thickness. But before he saw the stone pot, he first saw Lang Nuo looking at him with a face full of sympathy.

Lang Shuo: “???”

What was wrong with him?

Lang Shuo lowered his head and looked himself over. His arm had some injuries, but they were not serious. His leg was fixed and only waiting for the bone to heal on its own. The pain in his waist was already less obvious today, and it should recover in another couple of days. No matter how he looked at it, everything was developing in a good direction. There was no need to worry about his life, and there was nothing worth pitying.

In the end, Lang Yun’s reaction answered Lang Shuo’s confusion.

Lang Yun irritably raised a hand and smacked Lang Nuo. “No one’s making you drink medicine, so why are you frowning? Hurry up and move the stone pot out. We’re boiling water and making soup later.”

“Oh, oh, oh!”

Lang Nuo was satisfied as soon as he heard the first half of the sentence. As for the latter half—anything connected to the stone pot tasted awful.

Lang Shuo understood what had happened. Lang Nuo had misunderstood and thought they were taking out the stone pot to brew medicine for him.

Lang Shuo recalled for a moment. It seemed that he had drunk medicine before, a very long time ago. The memory was blurry. He only remembered that he had spat out more than he had swallowed, and after drinking it, his entire person had instantly sobered up. The bitterness lingered in his mouth for a long time.

Thinking of that terrible taste, Lang Shuo shivered.

Seeing his reaction, Lang Yu laughed again.

The old priest had been good in every way. He had been very kind and gentle, unlike the priests of other tribes who acted high and mighty. His only flaw was that the medicine he brewed tasted far too awful. He himself had once said that when he was young, it was because the medicine he brewed tasted so terrible that the chief of a large tribe targeted him, eventually forcing him to leave the tribe.

Thinking of the old priest, Lang Yu felt a little uncomfortable. In the end, he silently sighed and did not mention these things that would make everyone sad.

Lang Shuo did not know what Lang Yu was thinking. After greeting Lang Nuo, he began teaching Lang Yun how to cook food suitable for cubs.

Boiling water was simple. Without Lang Shuo saying anything, Lang Yun knew what to do: scrub the stone pot clean and fill it with water.

Making soup was a little more complicated. Throwing meat directly into the pot would indeed cook it, but it would take a long time, and the flavor would not be very good. To make the meat soup taste better, it needed to be processed a little. Lang Shuo asked Lang Yun to bring in the food the tribe currently had so he could take a look.

The hunting party was responsible for hunting. During other seasons, they might bring back some fruit in passing, but now it was snow season, so what the hunting party brought back was only meat. The gathering team, on the other hand, brought back a wider variety of food.

The prey the hunting party had caught yesterday was large. When they had a choice, wolves preferred meat, so these foods had not been touched. They planned to eat them after the meat was finished.

Lang Yun brought in a little of each kind. Lang Shuo examined them one by one.

There were some nuts that looked like pine nuts. Who knew which little hoarding animal’s granary they had raided? There were also some yams, red dates found from who knew where, and a few persimmons that were halfway dried.

The plants on the Beast World Continent were also very similar to those he had seen in his previous life. The difference was that these plants were all enlarged versions. For example, the red dates were almost the size of small apples. If he had not bitten into one to confirm the taste, he would not have dared believe dates could grow this large.

After looking around, Lang Shuo finally decided to make yam, red date, and sliced meat soup.

This dish was not difficult. They only had to cut the yams into pieces, remove the pits from the red dates, slice the meat thinly, and put everything into the pot to boil.

The tribe’s only seasoning was salt. Cubs did not need that much salt. On top of that, salt was one of the most precious items in the entire tribe, so Lang Shuo only told Lang Yun to add a little.

Even if he had not said it, Lang Yun would not have added much salt. She was merely a little curious about the method Lang Shuo described.

Their tribe gave cubs boiled food every day. Sometimes, they also boiled several ingredients together. Whether the food tasted good depended entirely on luck. Sometimes it was edible, and sometimes the flavor was strange.

Previously, for convenience, some member had put several types of food gathered that day together. As a result, foods that had originally tasted decent changed flavor after being cooked. In the end, everyone had forced themselves to eat it. Since then, when the tribe boiled food, they boiled meat and leafy vegetables separately.

The food Lang Shuo called yam was not a leafy vegetable. Lang Yun was not sure whether putting them together would taste good in the end.

In fact, beastmen had excellent appetites. Whether food tasted good or bad, they would force it down. As for cubs, they were even less picky. They did not have time to be picky either. After all, there was only so much food. If they did not eat in time, someone else would eat it after a short while.

But after eating delicious roasted meat last night, Lang Yun was a little worried. If the food they boiled turned out too unpleasant and no one wanted to eat it, that would be a waste.

Lang Yun voiced her concern, mentioned the previous incident, then asked Lang Shuo, “Shuo, are you sure these three should be boiled together?”

“Don’t worry. Cooking them this way won’t taste bad,” Lang Shuo nodded. “Peel the yam first. After cutting it, stew everything together. Once the water boils, remember to skim off the foam on top.”

Lang Shuo had made yam, red date, and sliced meat soup before when working part-time at a clay pot soup shop near his school. That shop specialized in all kinds of soups, with many different combinations. Now they were only changing the beef to horned beast meat. The taste would be a little different, but it would be far from unpleasant.

The reason the food the tribe had boiled together before had tasted wrong was that the ingredients had not been properly paired. Each plant had a different flavor. Beastmen liked convenience when cooking and had never carefully studied combinations. They simply threw everything into the pot at once. And unlike modern times, they did not have all kinds of seasonings, so of course the final result had not tasted good.

But when paired properly, it was completely different. Many ingredients, when placed together, could produce unexpected results.

Lang Yun was a very responsible beastman. Ever since they arrived here, she had been in charge of the cubs’ food. After hearing Lang Shuo explain the points to pay attention to, she went out to prepare the ingredients.

“Shuo, do you want to go outside and bask in the sun for a while?” Lang Yu asked his younger brother after Lang Yun left.

Lang Shuo’s eyes lit up, and he nodded like he was pounding garlic. “Yes, yes.”

Although he could not wander around freely, basking in the sun was still nice.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the fluffy creatures beside him. Lang Shuo shamelessly slipped in a selfish request. “Brother, let’s take the cubs out to bask in the sun too? It’s too stuffy in the cave.”

Lang Shuo was not lying. He suspected that the reason he and the cubs kept waking up, eating, and then getting sleepy in the cave was not only because their bodies needed rest, but also partly because they were lacking oxygen.

The entire cave was so large, yet it only had one entrance. At night, everyone slept together inside. One could imagine the air quality. The other members spent the day outside, so the feeling was not obvious to them. But aside from resolving his physical needs, he had been staying inside the cave the entire time, and it truly was stuffy.

In their original territory, the cubs had also been taken out to bask in the sun from time to time. Today, all the members of the hunting party were present. Even primitive beasts would not dare approach this area. Lang Yu agreed to Lang Shuo’s suggestion without hesitation.

“All right.”

Carrying Lang Shuo on his back to the cave entrance, Lang Yu spoke to several other members and told them to carry the cubs out.

Several members entered the cave to pick up cubs.

Lang Yu settled his younger brother and the cubs in a place outside the cave where there was no wind but where the sun could reach. A layer of dry grass was spread on the ground so the animal hide on Lang Shuo would not get dirty. Beside them was the fire, making it very warm. Incidentally, they could also watch Lang Yun cook.

The tribe ate two meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. However, only the evening meal gathered all the members together. The morning meal was more casual. Lang Yu had already divided it last night, giving each member a piece of meat. Whenever they wanted to eat, they could roast it themselves.

Aside from Lang Shuo, the other members had already finished breakfast. After asking him, Lang Yu took out a few meat skewers and placed them over the fire to roast slowly.

Lang Shuo adjusted to the sunlight, casually scooped up a cub, and placed it on his uninjured leg. After observing it for a moment, he discovered it happened to be the one that had bitten his tail yesterday.

With a strong sense of revenge, Lang Shuo tugged the cub’s fluffy little tail twice as punishment.

The cub was not afraid of people. Or perhaps it sensed that Lang Shuo held no malice. It was not scared at all and excitedly hugged his hand to gnaw on it.

A cub whose teeth had not fully grown did not hurt at all when it bit. Lang Shuo rubbed it several times. This cub was too small, soft everywhere, so Lang Shuo did not dare use too much strength. His movements were extremely careful.

He was playing with the cub when he felt something lightly rub against his leg.

Lang Shuo looked over.

It was another cub.

The cubs were much livelier outside the cave than inside. At this moment, half of the group of cubs was awake. Two members were specifically watching over them to prevent them from running around. This cub had been blocked twice over there and had changed direction, planning to “break through” from Lang Shuo’s side.

Lang Shuo showed no mercy and picked it up, placing it on his leg.

The cubs were small and could not see places higher than themselves. In the eyes of the other cubs, the cub just now had successfully escaped from this side.

Soon, Lang Shuo became the breakthrough point in the eyes of the cubs, and they all crawled toward him.

Lang Shuo did not refuse. Whenever one came, he picked it up.

When Lang Yu came over with the roasted meat, what he saw was his younger brother with cubs growing all over his legs. Two cubs had arrived late and were currently grabbing the animal hide on Lang Shuo’s body, huffing and puffing as they climbed upward.
