All The Furry Creatures In The Beast World Are Farming With Me – CH2

Chapter 2

Lang Shuo was able to accept his new identity so quickly for two reasons. The first was the instinct he had felt upon waking—the certainty that this body was truly his. The second was that he had no attachment whatsoever to his previous life.

He wanted to live, but most of his previous life had only ever left him exhausted. Comparing the two lives, his current one actually felt more comfortable.

In his previous life, Lang Shuo had not been his parents’ biological child. After his adoptive parents adopted him, they had a pair of twins of their own and stopped caring about him from then on.

Lang Shuo had started working part-time to earn money at a young age, but he never stayed in one place for very long. Every time he learned a skill, he changed jobs. From middle school to university, he had basically worked every part-time job available around each of his schools.

Lang Shuo had no intention of stealing business from those bosses. It was just that, deep down, he always felt uneasy. He could not even sleep well. He constantly felt that he had not mastered enough skills, and only by continually learning new things could he feel at ease.

From the moment he got his first job, Lang Shuo wished he could split one day into two and use both. Years passed, and many memories had already grown blurry. But now, he was like a bystander, experiencing his life all over again, and observing it even more carefully. The skills buried deep in his memories became familiar once more, as if he had learned them only yesterday.

In his dream, Lang Shuo realized something. These skills might not have been particularly useful in his previous life. After all, everyone had a phone, and a quick search could bring up anything. There was no such thing as a secret recipe. But in this primitive society with its backward development, things were completely different. Every single skill would have a chance to be useful.

At the edge of the Snow Wolf Tribe’s territory.

The strongest group of members in the tribe—the hunting party—was chasing a herd of horned beasts.

Horned beasts were one of the common prey animals on the Beast God Continent and were widely distributed. They ran especially fast and required tremendous endurance to hunt. The hunters had to keep chasing them until the herd’s stamina was exhausted. Once a horned beast could no longer keep up and broke away from the group, the hunting party would surround and capture the isolated prey.

For a large hunting party, catching horned beasts was not difficult. But the Snow Wolf Tribe had just lost a group of warriors, so their usual hunting methods were no longer suitable. On top of that, they were not yet familiar with their new territory. Today’s hunt took much longer than usual. It was not until the sun was at its shortest that the herd’s speed finally began to slow.

The members in beast form gradually closed in on the prey. The wolf closest to the chief looked toward him, waiting for his command.

There were more than a dozen horned beasts in this herd. Three slower ones had already fallen behind the group ahead. They first had to decide which one to catch, separate the chosen horned beast from the others, and then capture it.

Choosing prey had always been the duty of the tribe’s experienced and courageous beastmen. After the previous chief passed away, this responsibility fell to Lang Yu.

Lang Yu ignored the two smaller ones and finally chose a larger male horned beast. This one had twisted its foot while running. Otherwise, a horned beast of this size would not have fallen behind. Such an opportunity was rare.

They had chased the herd too far. This place was too close to another tribe, so they could not stay for long. They could only catch one. Horned beasts varied greatly in size. The herd they had chased today was medium-sized, and a larger one would be enough to feed everyone in the tribe. With ice and snow everywhere, any meat they could not finish could be hung up and stored for a long time.

Only with a steady supply of food could the injured members of the tribe recover faster.

Lang Yu gave a signal in the direction of the prey. The entire team immediately took their positions and worked together, quickly separating the target from the herd with flawless coordination.

The hunting grounds were too far away. By the time the hunting party returned to the tribe with their prey, the sky had already darkened.

Several fires had been lit at the cave entrance in preparation for roasting food. They were also meant to deter any primitive beasts that might be lurking nearby. Where there was prey, there were primitive beasts, especially in territory that had not previously been occupied by any tribe. Even though they had yet to see primitive beasts in this area, no one dared lower their guard.

Lang Yu handed the prey to Lang Nuo and told him to take people to handle it. Then he walked toward the cave.

This was something he had done every day for the past few days: the first thing he did after returning to the tribe was check on his younger brother.

Lang Shuo had been unconscious for three days. If he continued sleeping like this, even if he eventually woke up, he would be weaker than before.

On the Beast God Continent, where the weak were prey to the strong, even with him protecting him, a fragile beastman would have a very difficult life.

At the thought, Lang Yu’s heart sank, and he could not help quickening his pace.

But before Lang Yu reached the cave entrance, a familiar figure blocked his path.

“Shuo just fell asleep. Don’t go in now. You’ll wake him,” Lang Yun said in a low voice.

Injured beastmen needed proper rest. Aside from eating, they basically spent the rest of their time sleeping so they could recover faster. When the wounded were asleep, no one would disturb them, and everyone would lower their voices to avoid affecting their rest.

Hearing that his younger brother had already woken up, the heart Lang Yu had been holding in suspense finally settled by more than half. He was just about to ask for the details when he suddenly heard a strange sound coming from inside the cave.

The voice sounded like Lang Shuo’s, but the tone was something they had never heard before. It felt unfamiliar, with an odd little quality to it.

In an instant, both cousins were startled.

The next moment, they rushed into the cave at the same time.

Lang Yu was faster and reached the cave entrance first. But when he saw the scene inside, he froze in confusion.

Inside the crude cave, Lang Shuo was struggling to half-turn on his side to avoid pressing on his wounds while facing as much as possible toward the cubs. His uninjured hand stretched out from beneath the animal hide, his index finger curled, and his lips moved slightly as he made a series of strange sounds.

“Pspsps—”

Lang Yu: “???”

Lang Yu rushed to his brother’s side in a few strides, his face full of worry. “Shuo, where does it hurt?”

Wolves had an extremely high tolerance for pain. In Lang Yu’s memory, his younger brother had never made such a strange sound before. His wounds must be hurting terribly.

At that moment, Lang Yu wished all of his brother’s injuries could be transferred to him instead. His body was stronger than his brother’s. If the same injuries were on him, they definitely would not hurt this badly. His cries would not even change like that.

Lang Shuo: “…”

He had only dreamed of his previous life. After studying through the dream, he had woken up feeling somewhat tired, and he cherished this second chance at life even more. He had simply wanted to call a cub over to pet it, ease his heavy mood, and relax a little.

Who would have thought he would fail to summon a cub and summon a strange young man instead?

Well, not exactly a stranger.

When he saw the other person, fragments of memory awakened. Lang Shuo quickly remembered that this was his older brother, Lang Yu, the current chief of the Snow Wolf Tribe. He was twenty-three this year, around the same age as Lang Shuo’s roommate in his previous life.

Lang Yu looked seventy percent similar to Lang Shuo from his previous life. Perhaps because he was chief, Lang Yu seemed more serious. But when facing him, he was not serious at all. He was very gentle.

Seeing him, Lang Shuo felt a wave of grievance rise from somewhere deep inside his heart.

But after struggling alone since childhood, Lang Shuo quickly suppressed that abnormal feeling. His expression returned to normal. No longer wearing the obsessed look he had when facing fluffy creatures, he politely shook his head.

“I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt anymore. Brother, you’re back? You’re not injured, are you?”

Seeing the change in Lang Shuo’s expression, Lang Yu felt a little disappointed. But when he heard his words, that disappointment instantly turned into surprise.

His younger brother had said so many words in one breath.

Lang Yu could hardly conceal the excitement in his heart. He raised his hand and rubbed his brother’s head, doing his best to answer calmly.

“Mm, I’m back. We caught a horned beast today. We’ll be able to eat soon.”

Lang Yu sighed inwardly. His younger brother was definitely lying to him. If it did not hurt terribly, how could even his voice have changed? That sound had made him want to ignore everything and appear at his brother’s side immediately.

Lang Shuo had no idea what his brother was thinking.

Hearing the term “horned beast,” the image of one automatically appeared in his mind. It was similar to a modern deer, with many varieties. Small ones weighed a few dozen catties, while large ones could weigh over a thousand. Judging from Lang Yu’s good mood, the one they had caught today was probably not small.

It looked like the cubs could finally have a full meal today.

Once his mood relaxed, Lang Shuo also felt hungry. Beastmen had strong digestion and digested food quickly. The piece of jerky he had eaten in the morning had long since been digested.

But the next second, Lang Shuo remembered the terrible texture of that jerky. He immediately used what little strength he had left to grab Lang Yu’s hand and instructed, “Brother, cut the meat into small pieces. Skewer them on clean branches, then roast them slowly over the fire.”

Please, please don’t throw the whole piece of meat into the fire. That isn’t roasting meat. That’s wasting good food!

Lang Yu had not expected his brother to specifically bring up the matter of eating. But this request was very simple, so he immediately agreed. “All right.”

Roasting it slowly was fine. Now that his brother was awake, he would be willing to roast meat pieces all night if he had to.

After just a few sentences, the familiar sense of exhaustion swept over Lang Shuo again. He yawned, then emphasized once more, “The cut pieces should be about the same size, around two fingers wide. Turn the branches slowly. Don’t roast one spot for too long, or it’ll turn black.”

After saying that, he yawned again and could only tell Lang Yu that he wanted to sleep a little longer.

“All right,” Lang Yu answered. “Sleep. When you wake up, you can eat.”

Knowing that once his brother agreed, he would definitely do it, Lang Shuo finally closed his eyes in relief.

Judging from his current condition, the wounds on his body would not threaten his life. But before they healed, his energy was far below that of other beastmen. He needed enough sleep to recuperate.

Lang Shuo did not fight against his body’s instincts.

No matter what he wanted to do, the first step was to heal. Otherwise, in his current weak state, not only would he be unable to help, he would only become a burden to the tribe.

Lang Shuo knew himself very well. Right now, he was only slightly stronger than the cubs—and only in terms of strength. After all, the cubs could run around. He could not.

Of course, before falling into deep sleep, Lang Shuo did have one regret.

It would be even better if he could hug a cub while sleeping.

On such a cold day, sleeping with a warm fluffball in his arms would definitely be wonderfully cozy.

When Lang Shuo woke again, it was already completely dark outside. Only the firelight from the cave entrance shone in. But wolves had excellent night vision, so even at night, he could still see his surroundings clearly.

It was very lively outside.

This was the tribe’s first meal after settling down, and every member of the tribe was happy. Most beastmen were simple-minded. All they wanted was to be fed and warm. They would not remain sunk in grief forever. To the living beastmen, eating a full meal was something worth celebrating.

Night on the Beast God Continent was much colder than daytime. Even with a thick layer of animal hide covering him, Lang Shuo still felt a chill and could not help shivering.

Lang Yu, who had come to bring his brother food, saw this the moment he entered the cave. He immediately called for Lang Yun.

“Yun, light a fire over here.”

Before Lang Yun could answer, Lang Shuo shook his head and refused Lang Yu’s kindness.

“No need, Brother. Don’t light a fire. I’m cold because I haven’t eaten. I’ll warm up after eating.”

For safety, they had to block the cave entrance when resting at night, leaving at most a small gap. Before sleeping, everyone would put out all the fires outside the cave, leaving only one fire seed near the cave entrance in a sheltered spot, watched over by two beastmen taking turns.

This was a method passed down among the beastfolk. Many beastmen did not know why it had to be done, but Lang Shuo understood. A single fire seed produced little carbon monoxide and other waste gases. Since the cave entrance was not completely sealed, air could circulate and carry away those gases, so it would not affect the beastmen’s health.

But he was currently lying deeper inside the cave. If they lit a fire here, the air would not circulate, and the harmful gases in the cave would accumulate.

At night, the entire tribe had to rest in the cave. One more fire meant one more danger. He could withstand this bit of cold. There was no need to take such a huge risk just to warm up.

Besides, there were fragile cubs nearby. Sometimes, before the adults noticed anything, the cubs would already be suffocating.

Lang Yun, who had come over after hearing the call, looked at Lang Yu, then at Lang Shuo, using her eyes to ask Lang Yu whose order she should follow.

“Then we won’t light one,” Lang Yu said.

Under normal circumstances, Lang Yu was willing to prioritize his younger brother’s wishes. After all, his brother was younger than him and had to be coaxed.

Lang Shuo breathed a sigh of relief, glad that his brother was so easy to talk to. Then he looked at the meat skewers in Lang Yu’s hand.

Lang Yu was a good older brother. He really had listened to him and cut the meat into pieces before skewering and roasting it.

The Snow Wolf Tribe had excellent comprehension skills, especially Lang Yu as the chief. Lang Shuo had only said a few short sentences, and Lang Yu had led the tribe members in copying the method. Although their technique was still inexperienced and some parts had been burned, it was far from the skewers Lang Shuo had made when he worked part-time at a barbecue stall in his previous life.

Even so, they looked very appetizing.

They were far better than dry, tough, charred jerky.

Lang Shuo had originally only been a little hungry. But after smelling the aroma of meat, his stomach immediately began to growl.

Lang Yu helped him sit up and handed him a skewer.

Lang Shuo took a bite. As expected, it tasted much better than jerky. There should have been salt sprinkled on it, giving it a faint salty flavor. Before he knew it, he had finished one skewer.

Seeing him eat with such relish, Lang Yu casually found a place to sit. As he handed him another skewer, he searched for a topic to chat about with his brother.

“Everyone likes meat roasted this way. They all ate more than usual today.”

Even he had been unable to resist eating a few extra skewers earlier.

To Lang Yu, today was a special day. His younger brother had woken up and was willing to speak to them. Although he did not say much and spent most of his time listening to Lang Yu, this was completely different from before.

It was a good beginning.

Before today, many members of the tribe had thought Lang Shuo was a fool. Only Lang Yu had always believed that as long as he kept talking to his younger brother, one day, his brother would respond to him.

Today, he had finally waited long enough.

As Lang Shuo listened to him, he recalled a few things.

At present, in their tribe—perhaps even in most beastman tribes—there were only two ways to cook food.

The first, and most commonly used method, was to place it directly in the fire or beside the fire to roast. Once it was cooked, they used a stone knife to scrape off the charred layer on the surface before eating it. Sometimes, if food was too scarce, they could even skip that last step.

The advantage of roasting meat this way was that it was fast and could be done anywhere. As long as there was fire and food, they could roast it. The disadvantage was that the texture was terrible. Cubs that had not changed their teeth could not chew it, and even cubs that had changed their teeth had trouble biting through it. Only adult beastmen could eat it without changing expression.

The second method was boiling.

The tribe’s only stone pot was used to boil medicine, so food was generally not cooked in it.

The way beastmen boiled food was rather special. Before cooking, they would choose a place and dig a pit in the ground. They would line the bottom of the pit with animal hide to separate the food from the soil, then place water, chunks of meat, and other food inside the hide. After that, they would throw heated stones into the water, using the residual heat of the stones to warm the water and cook the food.

Boiled food was softer than roasted food and suitable for cubs to eat. For convenience, the members in charge of feeding the cubs would mash the cooked food before giving it to them. The finished product was the mush he had seen that morning.

In Lang Shuo’s eyes, both methods were far too crude.

Roasted meat had too much waste and a terrible texture.

As for the second method, even if the high temperature had a sterilizing effect, the sand and dirt that got mixed in were still there. Every so often, someone would bite down on a tiny stone.

Every bite came with a new “surprise.”

The more Lang Shuo thought about it, the more unacceptable it seemed.

Everything else could be put aside for now.

The food problem had to be solved.

He simply could not stand watching people ruin food like this right in front of him.
