Chapter 10: It’s a Dragon
Lu Ao could not take the full sixteen-thousand-plus yuan from selling the giant grouper. Forty-five percent still had to be deducted as tax.
After tax, Lu Ao only received 9,284 yuan.
This income looked pretty good, but in truth, he had really risked his life for it.
Lin Manzhang and the others were all fishermen. They understood better than anyone how dangerous fishing could be.
Lu Ao treated them to lunch at a nearby hotel, but they did not choose expensive dishes. They only picked some mid-to-low-priced food.
When Lu Ao saw the menu, warmth flashed through his eyes, and he took the initiative to order several pricier signature dishes.
After the meal, Lu Ao was going to part ways with them. “I’ll go to the county town first to pick up my vehicle, then buy some groceries. I won’t go back with you.”
Lin Manzhang quickly asked, “How are you getting there? Why don’t I drive you?”
“No need. Didn’t Sister-in-law tell you to go home early? You still have vegetables to plant. I’ll take the bus.”
Seeing that he refused, Lin Manzhang did not insist. He nodded and said, “That works too. Then we’ll head back first. Be careful. The vegetable seedlings your sister-in-law bought for you have already been put at home. When you go back later, stop by my house and pick them up.”
“Didn’t we agree you’d come to my place for dinner tonight? You can bring them over then.”
“Next time. Fishing isn’t easy for you either. We already ate your meal at noon, so forget about tonight. We’ll fish together another time.”
Lu Ao nodded. “That works.”
The tricycle Lu Ao had ordered had only had its canopy added today. Lu Ao hurried to the county town, paid the remaining balance, tested the vehicle, then went straight to the market to buy groceries before driving it home.
He was not too familiar with tricycles, and the road conditions on the township roads were not exactly good.
He drove slowly the whole way. By the time he returned to the village, it was already past seven.
The sky had gone dark, leaving only an indistinct streak of sunset glow at the horizon.
Since it was too late, Lu Ao did not detour to Linwu Village to disturb Lin Manzhang and the others.
He drove straight home.
As Lu Ao drove, the wind brushed against his face, feeling extremely pleasant.
That pleasantness came to an abrupt stop when he discovered a person standing at the entrance of his house.
That person wore a white shirt, a white T-shirt, and even white pants. His face was especially fair and handsome.
A timid person who saw him at first glance would probably be scared stiff.
Lu Ao raised his head and met his eyes. That person curved his eyes slightly at him. His aura seemed very gentle, but Lu Ao clearly sensed danger behind that gentleness.
Song Zhou was also looking at Lu Ao—the A-level dangerous individual marked by their Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency.
Lu Ao looked extraordinarily handsome. Even sitting on an agricultural tricycle, he looked as if he were filming a blockbuster, his legs appearing especially long.
He even looked rather cool.
Song Zhou smiled. “Lu Ao, hello. I’m Song Zhou.”
Song Zhou?
Lu Ao sized up this man whose name sounded rather appetizing and nodded. “Hello.”
“Let me introduce myself.” Song Zhou smiled gently. “I’m the person in charge of the China branch of the Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency. This morning, we sensed fluctuations from your side, so I came over to take a look.”
The Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency had detected this fluctuation for quite some time, but had never been able to fully locate it. Only today had they traced it to its source.
Lu Ao frowned slightly. When he was fishing this morning, he had lost control and turned back into a lizard. The other party was probably talking about that.
Lu Ao stared at Song Zhou, his expression unreadable.
Song Zhou asked good-temperedly, “May I come in so we can talk in detail? There seem to be quite a lot of mosquitoes.”
Bullshit. No matter how many mosquitoes there were, not a single one dared come within three meters of Song Zhou.
Lu Ao’s excellent eyesight saw this perfectly clearly. After a pause, he still said, “Wait a moment.”
He got out of the vehicle, unlocked the door, pushed open both doors, gestured for Song Zhou to go in first, then drove the vehicle inside.
The house Lu Ao lived in now had been built by his parents more than ten years ago.
Many people in their village were like this. Whether or not they could afford to buy a house in the city, they had to build one back in their hometown.
One reason was for face, and the other was to secure a residential plot.
Song Zhou looked over the small courtyard.
It was a typical rural house, two small floors high. The exterior wall was covered with white ceramic tiles. The first floor had a courtyard, the second floor had a balcony, and several windows were fitted with anti-theft bars.
The basic structure of this house was no different from the others.
And yet, once one entered, there was still a very great difference to be felt.
This house was very quiet and secluded.
Aside from Lu Ao and the ingredients in the kitchen, there was no second kind of animal.
The plants growing in one corner of the courtyard and on the rooftop, however, were unusually lush. Even the weeds were full of vitality, green and fresh enough to drip.
Song Zhou observed silently for a while, then withdrew his gaze.
Lu Ao opened the living room door and gestured for Song Zhou to enter.
Lu Ao’s home was also very clean and tidy, without the slightest dirty or messy atmosphere of a single man.
Song Zhou sat on the sofa. Lu Ao went to get the thermos and cups to make tea for him. Every step of receiving a guest was very normal.
The two sat down.
Lu Ao asked directly, “Does this Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency of yours have any proof?”
“Mm?” Song Zhou raised his head. “What?”
“Proof of identity.” Lu Ao frowned. “It’s not as if whatever you say automatically becomes true.”
Song Zhou found this interesting. It was his first time encountering someone who asked this.
He thought for a moment. “Does this count?”
As he spoke, he tapped the hot tea Lu Ao had just served him.
The hot tea instantly turned into ice, expanding above the rim of the cup. Even from a distance, Lu Ao could feel the chill.
Lu Ao frowned slightly, staring at the cup in front of him.
Song Zhou lightly tapped the cup again, and the ice that had been giving off cold air instantly turned back into hot water, still steaming white. The ice turned into hot water, fell back into the cup, and carried faint ripples.
Lu Ao’s pupils shrank slightly.
He pressed his lips together and did not ask anything else.
There was no use asking. The other party’s combat strength was enough to crush him.
Song Zhou withdrew his hand and said, “I came to find you this time because you fused with dragon bloodline. You can no longer be considered human, so I came to register you.”
Lu Ao shifted his gaze to Song Zhou’s face and caught the second key point. “Dragon?”
Song Zhou nodded. “Yes, dragon. You’re very lucky. You’ve become the only dragon in this plane.”
Lu Ao’s heart gave a rapid thump. “Not a lizard?”
“What?” Song Zhou thought he had misheard. Clear surprise appeared on his face. “Lizard?”
“Nothing. You mean I’ve become a dragon?”
Song Zhou reacted, looking a little amused. “Yes. You fused with a young dragon. You are now a dragon.”
“Then what about my original body?”
“It was ‘eaten.’” Seeing his face pale, Song Zhou explained, “Not eaten in the literal sense. It means your dragon body absorbed the genes of your human body. The two combined together, and the human part is now simply one part of you.”
Lu Ao understood. “Are there any aftereffects?”
“For now, we don’t know.”
Lu Ao looked at him.
Song Zhou spread his hands and said, “You are the only example. In all the time I’ve been conscious and alive, this is the first time I’ve heard of a human and dragon being compatible. We originally thought dragons had already gone extinct in this plane.”
Lu Ao was not familiar with him and did not intend to ask more. He changed the topic. “Aside from registering with your Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency, what else do I need to do?”
“Nothing for now. Just register.” Song Zhou said, “We are a very broad organization. If you run into difficulties, you can come to us.”
“Alternative police?”
“More or less. You can understand us as a semi-official organization. If something happens, coming to us will be much more convenient than looking for others. However, some matters require fees to handle.”
Song Zhou took out his phone. “We can add each other on WeChat and exchange phone numbers.”
Lu Ao’s expression nearly cracked. In his heart, he felt a strange sense of disconnection. The topic was obviously so mysterious, but the contact method was so ordinary.
While he was still stunned, Song Zhou lightly took his phone, added himself on WeChat, saved his own number into Lu Ao’s phone, then called himself with it.
“All done.” Song Zhou returned the phone to him. “I’ll send you a website. It’s the official forum of our Extraordinary Personnel Supervision Agency. Browse it more often, and you’ll quickly understand what we do.”
Lu Ao’s mind was a mess, and he instinctively nodded.
Song Zhou then flipped his hand, and from who knew where, produced a small syringe. “May I draw a little blood? We need to do a simple identification.”
Lu Ao looked at him, his eyes full of suspicion.
Song Zhou smiled. “When we encounter ordinary extraordinary people, we usually just go straight to drawing blood. But after all, you are the only dragon. Would you like to do it yourself?”
Lu Ao did not move. Song Zhou added, “My combat strength should be much higher than yours.”
Lu Ao did not doubt this.
He was already tall enough, now at 1.85 meters, but Song Zhou was still half a head taller than him. Even though he was dressed neatly and looked refined and handsome, he still carried an aura that said he was not someone to provoke.
Lu Ao’s eyelashes half-lowered. He did not want to provoke this person.
He took the syringe and hesitated for a moment.
Seeing that he was not moving, Song Zhou suddenly said, “Pardon me.”
Before Lu Ao could react, Song Zhou had already taken the syringe from his hand, lightly held his wrist, and neatly drew a tube of blood.
Song Zhou moved extremely quickly. Lu Ao only felt as if his hand had been bitten by a mosquito, and the warmth of Song Zhou’s palm still lingered on his wrist, but the blood draw was already over.
Song Zhou flipped his hand again, and the syringe disappeared. His eyes curved. “I really don’t mean any harm. This is just a necessary procedure. Some extraordinary individuals can change their forms, which causes great trouble for the supervision agency. So the agency has a rule: every newly collected individual must have blood taken. If anything happens, it will be easier to lock onto their identity in time.”
Lu Ao nodded. “I understand. Are there any other procedures?”
“Not for now.”
Lu Ao stood up. “I’ll see you out.”
This was him sending the guest away. Song Zhou had a very good temper and did not mind. He also stood up. “Then, goodbye.”
Lu Ao had just been about to see him out of the courtyard when, unexpectedly, after Song Zhou left the living room, he smiled, and his figure blurred before Lu Ao’s eyes, directly disappearing.
A very non-human way of leaving.
Lu Ao frowned.
A long while later, he went over to clean up the cup Song Zhou had used.
The tea in the cup was still scalding hot, much hotter than his own cup.
He took the cup to the kitchen to wash it, and along the way, took ingredients from the fridge and made himself a rich pot of noodles.
After eating, he returned to his room, closed the windows, drew the curtains, and took off his clothes.
He concentrated and thought carefully.
A moment later, his chest grew hot. His whole body shrank, and the clothes on him slipped down. He had already turned into a small lizar—dragon.
Lu Ao faced the full-length mirror.
He had always thought he was a lizard before. In reality, he was much longer and more slender than a lizard. The distance between his front claws and back claws was greater, and his body was also rounder and smoother.
The biggest difference was his head.
As long as someone could see his appearance, no one would think he was a lizard.
His appearance was very similar to a traditional Chinese dragon—his eyes were large, long whiskers grew by his mouth, and two small jade-colored dragon horns like deer antlers rose from his forehead.
He blinked, and the lizar—dragon in the mirror blinked too, looking extremely adorable.
It seemed he really was a dragon, no doubt about it.
Lu Ao had avoided facing it for so long. He had not expected this to be the result.
He observed himself in the mirror for a long while, then changed back into human form.
A person with long legs, a tall body, and smooth muscle lines.
