Chapter 1: Becoming a Dragon
When a person was unlucky, even drinking cold water could get stuck in their teeth.
Lu Ao strode forward at full speed. Behind him came the sounds of beer bottles being smashed, curses flying, and people panting heavily.
Shouts rang out from behind him.
“Over there! He went that way!”
“Chase him!”
“Damn it, is that brat running a convenience store or is he a long-distance runner?!”
“Hurry up! There’s a river over there. He won’t be able to get away!”
“Long Dick, circle around and block him from that side! Messy Hair, you go over there! Hah— I don’t believe we can’t catch that brat today—”
Lu Ao heard them clearly from up ahead. His strides grew even longer as he tried his hardest to break through the encirclement.
He was not afraid of thugs.
Nor was he afraid of drunkards.
But more than a dozen drunk thugs chasing after him all at once—no matter how good he was at fighting, this was still somewhat troublesome.
These people were loan sharks coming to collect a debt.
He had not borrowed any money.
The one who borrowed the money was a man who had just gone on a blind date with him.
That man had told people that Lu Ao was his boyfriend.
Anyone with half a brain would not believe such clumsy bragging.
But the thugs believed it, because he had money.
He owned a house locally and also had a small convenience store.
Compared with ordinary people, he could already be considered well-off.
There was no reasoning with drunk thugs like these. If they really caught up to him and a fight broke out, whether they beat him badly or he beat them badly, neither outcome was something he wanted to see.
Before running out, Lu Ao had already called the police. On the late-night street after eleven, he could faintly hear the sound of police sirens.
Lu Ao relaxed slightly. He only needed to run for another three to five minutes and hold out until the police arrived.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Still, people kept closing in on him from every direction.
Lu Ao ran through the darkness in long strides, gradually beginning to pant hard.
The thugs refused to give up. Lu Ao had lived in this city for nearly ten years, but this was the first time he realized there were so many thugs here, like a tide that came endlessly, wave after wave.
Bang—
In the darkness, a beer bottle smashed at Lu Ao’s feet.
Then came the second. The third…
The crackling sounds were like hailstones falling.
The beer bottles shattered, shards flying everywhere. Lu Ao stumbled, twisting his ankle, and at the same time, a sharp pain came from the back of his neck.
His back and neck were sticky. He had probably been cut.
A smug voice came from behind him on the left.
“Fuck, you really can run! If you’ve got the guts, keep running!”
Lu Ao gritted his teeth and ran even faster, like a nimble deer.
He ran forward madly. The thugs behind him charged after him, excited noises coming from their mouths, as though they were hunting.
The police sirens grew closer and closer.
Before Lu Ao could even breathe a sigh of relief, a rough, hoarse voice slurred from behind him, “Don’t—don’t be scared. There are only two or three cops over there. They won’t dare come over!”
Lu Ao did not know if it was his imagination, but although the sirens kept sounding, they truly did not seem to be getting any closer.
His heart sank.
That rough voice shouted again, “What the hell are you afraid of?! Go! None of you are even fourteen yet!”
At some point, Lu Ao’s forehead had been cut open by a shard. Blood flowed down, soaking through his eyebrow and spreading straight to the corner of his eye.
Everything before him was blood-red.
After an unknown amount of time, he was chased all the way to the riverside.
The thugs behind him shouted viciously as they closed in.
“Damn it, keep running!”
Lu Ao did not hesitate for even a second. He grabbed the railing and vaulted straight into the river.
His body leaped through the air, then entered the water with agile grace. With a few strokes of his arms, he quickly swam toward the middle of the river.
He had grown up in a fishing village when he was young. His swimming ability could not be considered excellent, but it was still much better than the average person’s.
Tonight’s situation was so serious. Even if the police could not come over for the moment, they would soon call in special police.
He only needed to hide in the water for a while.
“Fuck, he really jumped!”
The voice came from above the water. Lu Ao was underwater, and his ears were filled with the gurgling sound of currents, so he could not hear clearly. He could only make out the anger and frustration in that voice.
A bad feeling suddenly rose in his heart, and he instinctively dove a little deeper.
The next instant, a beer bottle was thrown into the river with a heavy splash.
Very soon, beer bottles, stones, pavement bricks, and all sorts of random objects were hurled forcefully into the river.
In the darkness, Lu Ao could not hear clearly, but he felt that the places where these things fell were not far from him.
His heart sank, and he had no choice but to swim toward the middle of the river.
The moat in their city was like most moats. Its water quality could not be called good. Most of the time, it was dark and murky, carrying a fishy smell.
Lu Ao had never come here to swim, let alone come here at night for a wild swim.
He swam a few meters, then surfaced to breathe.
The moment he showed himself, beer bottles, bricks, and other things came smashing after him.
The current was flowing very fast. His attention was focused on dodging the bricks, and he did not expect a sudden rush of water to surge over. In an instant, he was swept far away.
?!!
Lu Ao was dragged along by the current until his head spun.
The greatest taboo in swimming was losing rhythm.
This unexpected accident threw his limbs into disorder, and then he was directly caught by an undercurrent and dragged toward the bottom of the river.
Fuck!
Lu Ao knew he had run into serious trouble.
He tried hard to calm down and adjust his movements.
It was useless.
He had already exhausted all his strength while being chased. Now, wrapped in a heavy, icy undercurrent that was dragging him down toward the bottom of the river, he could not break free at all.
Lu Ao desperately swam toward the surface, but human strength had its limits. He truly could not withstand the power of nature.
Within a few minutes, he unwillingly spat out a string of bubbles and was completely dragged to the riverbed.
Their city was near the sea. The river carried Lu Ao along in a mighty rush, surging toward the ocean.
Perhaps because this sudden disaster was simply too unjust, Lu Ao could not swallow that breath of resentment even in death. He held on, and somehow, he actually persisted in the river for more than ten minutes without dying completely.
The river water silently merged into the ocean currents.
Lu Ao was washed to some unknown distance, and he had no idea how much time had passed.
When he became conscious again, it was already broad daylight.
He seemed to be floating underwater.
The water was very clear. Through the surface, he could directly see the blue sky and white clouds above.
What was astonishing was that although he was completely submerged in the water, he did not feel suffocated at all.
He was a little dazed. According to his own guess, under such complicated hydrological conditions, he definitely should not have survived. He did not know what kind of miracle had happened, but he had actually been given the chance to open his eyes again.
Lu Ao subconsciously spat out a bubble and began struggling, desperately paddling with both hands.
Wait.
Something was wrong.
Lu Ao widened his eyes and looked ahead.
Very quickly, he discovered two claws.
What he was using to paddle was not his hands, but two short little claws!
They were really especially short, not even as long as his forearm.
The claws were very strange. The tips were sharp, and the limbs were covered in scales. They looked like the claws of a lizard.
Lu Ao completely panicked.
He thrashed hard in the water, turning his head to try to see what he looked like.
Claws. A spine. A tail.
There were also scales on his body. The scales seemed to have a jade-like texture, cool, faintly translucent, and dark green.
They looked extremely beautiful.
But no matter how beautiful they were, they were still non-human.
He had been nearly 1.8 meters tall, with long legs and a good figure. Yet after jumping into a river and waking up again, he had actually turned into a four-legged lizard?!
What did four-legged lizards eat?
Surely they did not eat bugs, right?
As Lu Ao struggled upward toward the surface, uncontrollable thoughts flew wildly through his mind.
Although his claws were short, they were surprisingly useful. Before long, he reached the surface.
He stretched his head above the water.
Very soon, he saw the blue sky and white clouds, and he also saw a deserted island nearby.
A deserted island made entirely of stone.
Lu Ao did not often go out to sea, so he did not know where this place was.
He moved his eyeballs, observing his surroundings, and discovered that this sea area was especially calm.
It was not the time for the tide to rise or fall yet, and the waves on the sea were very small.
Looking all around, he could not see a single boat.
He did not even know whether he was still on Earth.
Lu Ao breathed a sigh of relief.
Even if he was no longer on Earth, this was still better than appearing directly in front of humans.
Somewhat exhausted, he slowly climbed onto the island along the rocks.
He was truly tired. The blazing sun warmed his back, and at that moment, he almost wanted to ignore everything and just collapse on the stone to sleep.
Fortunately, his reason returned.
Forcing himself to stay alert, he crawled around the island once.
This island was not big. Its longest stretch was only thirty or forty meters, and its widest point was only twenty or thirty meters.
There were several puddles on the island, while many oysters and all sorts of sea snails grew on the stone walls.
Oysters could be eaten raw, and many sea snails could be eaten raw as well.
Only after Lu Ao saw food did he realize that he had long been starving.
He no longer cared about his mysophobia and crawled over with his claws to look for snails.
The sea snails here were not large. He did not recognize many types of snails, only managing to identify a few blackish-brown spicy snails.
There were not many of these snails. Gathered together on the ground, they only amounted to about a handful.
But the operculums on the snails were tightly closed. With his current short little claws, there was no way for him to directly eat the meat inside unless he bit through the shells along with them.
Lu Ao did not know whether his current teeth could directly bite these snails apart.
He stared at the snails for a while, and for some reason, he did not really want to try. These snails were too hard. If he were still human, biting them would be enough to chip his teeth.
The snails were right here, visible but unreachable. Lu Ao thought for a while, then slowly went to find a stone. With great difficulty, he brought his short little claws together and picked up a rock beside him that was even bigger than a soccer ball.
He had originally thought that with his short little body, picking it up would be extremely difficult.
The truth, however, was completely beyond his expectations. Holding the stone, he felt that it was light and airy, as if it took no effort at all.
The stone fell under the force of gravity, and the snails were smashed to pieces with ease.
There was nothing wrong with the stone. Since it could smash the snails into pulp, it had to be very heavy.
It was his strength that had increased.
Lu Ao stared seriously at the snails beneath his claws.
The snails under the rock had already been smashed into a mess and were completely inedible.
Lu Ao stared at them for a while, then switched to a lighter stone and gave another snail a gentle tap.
With a crack, the snail split open.
Like a human cracking sunflower seeds, he pawed open the broken snail shell, revealing the plump snail meat inside.
Lu Ao only ate the meat.
The snails produced by this natural sea area were delicious and rich.
His sensitive sense of taste fully analyzed the texture and flavor of the sea snails. The plump snail meat was extremely juicy, and its fresh, rich flavor filled the tip of his tongue, making him want to swallow his tongue along with it.
Lu Ao cracked open one snail with each strike of the stone. Very soon, he had opened and eaten that small pile of snails.
Seeing only a pile of snail shells and viscera left by his feet, he was still unsatisfied. His stomach had only just been awakened, and the feeling of finally tasting something delicious only to have nothing left to eat was extremely uncomfortable.
He stared at his short little claws and thought for a moment. Then, with difficulty, he brought them together again, picked up the stone, and went to smash oysters.
The process of smashing oysters was much easier than he had imagined.
His short little claws were unexpectedly nimble, and his strength was great as well. Smashing oysters was one strike per oyster, and he soon cracked open a large pile.
This island stood alone overseas. Who knew how long it had been since humans last came here? Or perhaps there were no humans in this world at all.
Without human disturbance, these oysters had grown large, plump, and beautiful.
Lu Ao easily knocked down a pile of them, each one larger than his palm had been when he was human.
With so many oysters, he slowly moved his hind legs, fastidiously went to the sea to rinse his front claws, then came back to open the oysters.
He did not need a knife to open oysters at all. The thin, sharp tips of his claws were the best knife. With one stab and one pry, the oyster shell opened, revealing the thick flesh inside.
The oyster meat he had opened was still contracting. When he gently shook the shell, the fat, slightly yellowish meat inside also trembled.
He lowered his head and took a big slurp. The fresh, delicious juices burst open, filling his entire mouth with the flavor of oyster meat. The abundant juice quickly eased his thirst.
He narrowed his eyes in satisfaction. The sunlight cast his shadow onto the ground, where his long, delicate eyelashes could faintly be seen.
Lu Ao thought somewhat strangely that this lizard version of himself seemed to be rather graceful-looking.
After eating and drinking his fill, sleepiness overcame him, so he found a corner and went to sleep.
For the next two days, he spent his time eating and sleeping.
After turning into a lizard, he had absolutely no intention of trying to return to the human world.
He did not even have the desire to explore beyond the island.
He was very strong and could swim quite fast. If he wanted to eat snails, he ate snails. If he wanted to eat fish, he ate fish. If he wanted to eat oysters, he ate oysters.
He felt that something might have gone wrong with him psychologically. Now, he could not summon any energy for anything. Every day, he only did three things: wake up and look for food, eat, and lie down to sleep.
Just these three things had already consumed all his energy.
Instinctively, he felt that he should do something, but every time he thought about the fact that he was a lizard, he felt dejected and only wanted to empty his mind for the time being.
Two days passed just like that.
The weather was also good that day. The sunlight was brilliant, shining so brightly that everything looked white and glaring.
Lu Ao was half daydreaming and half dozing. He was sleeping comfortably when he suddenly heard the sound of a motor. It came into his ears with a “putt-putt-putt,” accompanied by a rumbling noise.
He was jolted awake at once and raised his head alertly, his dark green eyes turning.
Very quickly, he discovered that a boat carrying people was heading toward this deserted island from afar.
Lu Ao: “?!!!”
Wasn’t this world supposed to have no humans?!
