Chapter 99
Yu Zhi took a sip of water, then fished two candies out of his pocket. He popped one into his own mouth and stuffed the other into Lu Liming’s hand.
“Liming,” he said lazily, “if the sky falls, the tall ones will hold it up.”
It had nothing to do with the two of them anyway.
Lu Liming only had a healing ability.
As for Yu Zhi—aside from not having to eat, drink, or use the bathroom, he only had that unspeakable ability. At best, he could protect himself.
“If the sky really falls and I’m the one holding it up,” Lu Liming muttered while tearing open the wrapper, “then everyone might as well just wait to die together.”
He chewed the candy and glanced at the livestream comments.
[User “Light Returns” suggests you kill him while he’s off guard and tips 10 universal coins.]
[User “Interdimensional Otaku” thinks he’s selfish and lazy and hopes you switch allegiance.]
[User “The Long March” believes he has a pure heart and advises you to stay by his side.]
Seeing several comments cursing Yu Zhi and telling him to kill him, Lu Liming bit down hard and shattered the candy between his teeth.
You don’t know shit, he thought.
Brother Yu is just sharp-tongued and soft-hearted. Says one thing, does another.
Back in H City, he’d said saving him was just for an apartment in B City. But now he hadn’t mentioned it once.
Every time they ran into a pollution source instance, Brother Yu was the first to say he was running—yet every time, he was the one who solved it and saved everyone.
And with Fu Suxi—that lunatic—Brother Yu hadn’t killed him or crippled him. He’d just… humiliated him a little.
“Letting people die without saving them”… he probably just couldn’t explain it yet.
Lu Liming crunched and swallowed the candy whole.
“Okay, Brother Yu,” he said.
“If you’re not saving them, then I won’t either.”
Yu Zhi: “……”
“Bang—”
Another gunshot. Another body dropped.
At noon, the sun hung high, warm light pouring into the combat building. But the spacious first-floor hall felt shrouded in invisible gloom. The air was heavy, suffocating.
Among those waiting for interrogation, a shorter man quietly edged backward, trying to slip away.
The next second, a large hand appeared out of nowhere, clamped around his throat, and yanked him out of the crowd.
Click—
A bullet was chambered. The dark muzzle aimed straight at his brow.
Fu Suxi pulled the trigger.
Just before the bullet pierced the man’s forehead, it abruptly stopped midair—then twisted, redirected by an invisible force, and shot toward Fu Suxi instead.
Fu Suxi tilted his head instantly. The bullet grazed his cheek and embedded in the wall behind him.
In an instant, every armed soldier present aimed their guns at the man. Red targeting dots covered his entire face.
Knowing he had a metal-type ability and could control bullets, the soldiers didn’t fire recklessly. They waited for Fu Suxi’s order.
Fu Suxi lifted a hand and touched the scratch on his cheek.
He smiled silently.
Before he changed expression, several others had already paled—especially the man’s teammates, captain, and close friends.
Lin Xiangyuan was one of them. He stared in disbelief. “Tang Gang! You—you—”
Tang Gang stared at Fu Suxi and suddenly burst into laughter.
“I’m doing this for humanity’s future!”
“You’re all wrong! The Operations Bureau is gravely mistaken—haha!”
“Today it’s me. Tomorrow it’ll be you!”
“Yu You, covering my mouth won’t help! Sooner or later everyone will know that pollution sources are—”
Before he could finish, a gun barrel was shoved into his mouth.
Fu Suxi pulled the trigger.
“Bang—”
“Bang—”
“Bang—”
“Bang—”
He emptied the entire magazine and casually tossed the pistol aside.
Without sparing the corpse a glance, he turned to the soldiers.
“Next time this happens, shoot immediately.”
“Continue.”
A phone rang, breaking the suffocating silence.
Fu Suxi paused and looked over. He Hanhai had taken out his phone.
Seeing the caller ID, Fu Suxi said flatly, “Mine.”
He Hanhai blinked. “Huh? This is my phone.”
Fu Suxi: “…… My call.”
Realizing, He Hanhai hurriedly handed it over.
Fu Suxi gestured for Shang Yu to take over temporarily and walked outside to answer.
The moment the call connected, Ji Yangqiu’s hoarse, exhausted voice exploded through.
“I just got out of a twenty-hour meeting. I argued my lungs out, but it’s settled.”
“Headquarters confirmed: for now, we focus on eliminating pollution sources. No purification actions.”
“There’s just one problem. Since the system publicly released global purification progress, it must have another goal—”
“Who cares,” Fu Suxi cut in coldly.
Ji Yangqiu hesitated. “You sure we shouldn’t pursue both elimination and purification?”
“Purification doesn’t work,” Fu Suxi said. “At least not now.”
Ji Yangqiu’s voice sharpened. “How do you know? What did you find out?”
Fu Suxi lit a cigarette. “I did find something.”
“I found out you told Yu You about the system. And about me.”
Ji Yangqiu: “???”
“That’s slander!”
After a brief back-and-forth, Ji Yangqiu finally asked seriously, “Do you know what Meteorite Biotech is planning?”
Fu Suxi answered bluntly.
“They want humans to coexist with pollutants and pollution sources.”
Silence.
Then both men spoke at the same time.
“They’ll move on S City.”
“They’ll move on S City.”
Ji Yangqiu’s vision darkened. “They’ll use S City as a testing ground. So what’s your plan? Killing all those moles—does that even help? Actually… you’re provoking them on purpose, aren’t you?”
Fu Suxi neither confirmed nor denied it.
Before hanging up, he said quietly:
“Ji Yangqiu. Someone has to die.”
“You can’t save everyone.”
The interrogation lasted four full days.
No one was spared—not even cafeteria staff.
Anyone who tried to avoid interrogation was shot on sight.
By the end, the entire branch had witnessed Fu Suxi’s mercilessness. They’d also noticed his unstable mental state—the worse his mood, the harsher his methods.
No one dared linger near him.
If they saw Fu Suxi, they detoured.
If they saw Yu Zhi, they detoured even faster.
Yu Zhi had become tightly linked to Fu Suxi’s mood swings.
Meanwhile, Lu Liming somehow became one of the most popular people in the bureau.
He was cheerful, generous with universal coins, and—most importantly—as Yu Zhi’s ex-boyfriend, he was still alive after being targeted by Fu Suxi.
Some even went to him asking for survival tips.
“Liming,” one ability user asked while being treated, “why aren’t you afraid of Minister Yu?”
Lu Liming shrugged. “With Brother Yu around, what’s there to fear?”
“But he doesn’t ask Brother Yu before hitting people!”
Lu Liming thought about it.
“Brother Yu did mention a strategy.”
The man leaned forward eagerly. “What is it?”
Lu Liming nodded solemnly.
“Die gloriously.”
“…What?”
Lu Liming translated helpfully, “I think Brother Yu means: do everything with the resolve to die! If you’re not afraid of death, what’s there to fear? If you’re not scared of dying, why fear Minister Yu?”
The man left the observation room in a daze.
Five words echoed in his mind:
Resolve to die.
Meanwhile, somewhere in S City—
“How many are dead?”
“Besides me, three survived.”
“The item has been brought in. Do we know Yu You’s schedule?”
“Tomorrow, Minister Yu will likely take him to the Wall Gate. Minister Yu is very wary of parasitic pollutants.”
A woman laughed softly. “He’s smart.”
A shadow crouched by the window murmured, “Like brother, like brother.”
She twitched her lips. “When you got beaten before, was it your ribs or your brain that got damaged?”
Seeing the excitement flickering in his eyes, she frowned. “You’re still thinking about that?”
He recalled Yu Zhi’s scent, his body temperature. His heart pounded uncontrollably.
“What makes him special,” the shadow said with a distorted smile, “is how much he makes you want to r*pe him.”
“…I’m leaving,” the woman said flatly. “You continue.”
The next morning—
Yu Zhi yawned as Fu Suxi escorted him into an armored vehicle headed toward the Wall Gate.
The driver and Lin Xiangyuan in the passenger seat were chatting quietly at first. Then their voices grew louder.
“Brother Lin, what’s there to be afraid of?”
“Worst case, we die! If the sky falls, we all die together!”
Yu Zhi: “???”
Why does that sound so familiar?
