Chapter 76: Dreams, Distance, and Fire
After that day, Gu Tang spent several nights in a row dreaming that Young Master Gu was pinning him down and kissing him.
The Young Master Gu in his dreams was no longer as restrained as before.
There was no mask on his face anymore, and Gu Tang could not push him away.
He held him down with overwhelming strength.
He kissed him until he could not catch his breath.
Every time Gu Tang woke up, his chest was heaving violently, and his whole head felt hot and stuffy, as though a little wisp of steam might rise from the top of it.
Once he finally calmed down, the more he thought about it, the more embarrassed he became. The only thing he could do was cover his burning cheeks and roll around on the bed, whining softly to himself.
[Host, are you being crushed by a ghost in your sleep?]
Gu Tang: “…Shut up!”
The system ruining the mood was nothing new, and Gu Tang had long since gotten used to it. What he had not expected was that Young Master Gu also seemed to be acting as though nothing had happened.
As if what happened that night had been nothing more than one of his own dreams.
Young Master Gu had gone back to normal. In fact, the aura around him felt even colder than before, enough to make people instinctively keep their distance.
That coldness was not directed at Gu Tang, though.
Actually, even though Young Master Gu wore the same expressionless cold face every day, he was taking even more meticulous care of Gu Tang than before.
It was so excessive that if Gu Tang had not insisted on feeding himself, the other boy probably would have spooned every meal into his mouth.
Yet even though the two of them were together almost all day, Young Master Gu never kissed him again.
He did not even hold his hand anymore.
“…”
Gu Tang gloomily realized that it seemed he was the only one heating up all by himself.
[Men are like that. The moment they get what they want, they stop treasuring it!]
[I already told you not to trust the male lead, but you wouldn’t listen…]
The system kept lecturing him in his head.
Gu Tang disagreed. “Nian-Nian isn’t that kind of person.”
[Just keep spoiling him. One day you’ll be the one crying.]
The system was starting to forget what it had originally been created for and had instead become like a resentful mother who wished her child had more sense.
Seeing its host look as though his soul had been hooked away by the male lead was just unbearable to watch.
[Then tell me, why has he suddenly become so cold to you?]
Gu Tang could not answer.
He was confused too. He had no idea what Young Master Gu was thinking.
Could it be that one kiss really made him lose interest?
Or had Young Master Gu simply woken up the next morning, regained his senses, and decided they were unsuitable?
“What are you spacing out over?”
Gu Qinian lightly tapped the desk with the barrel of his pen and asked the distracted boy, “Why aren’t you finished yet? Is there a problem you can’t solve?”
Gu Tang snapped back to attention and quickly shook his head. “No!”
Gu Qinian tilted his head and looked at the big problem Gu Tang had just finished. The answer itself was not wrong, but the working steps were long, chaotic, and much more complicated than Gu Tang’s usual style.
“…”
After a brief silence, Gu Qinian still said nothing about it. He only said calmly, “Keep going. Time yourself.”
Gu Tang inexplicably felt his mood sink. He gave a soft “oh” and lowered his head to continue the worksheet.
The two of them were deskmates, but lately it felt as though the Chu River and Han border had formed between them.
Not even their elbows brushed anymore.
Young Master Gu’s elbow joints were like polished cold jade, hard and turned outward toward him, as though pushing him away.
Completely different from before, when he would casually grab Gu Tang’s hand and play with it…
Gu Tang’s thoughts drifted again.
Tap.
Gu Qinian set his pen down.
“?” Gu Tang froze.
Young Master Gu turned to look at him. His sharp, dark eyes fixed on him. “Gu Tang.”
Being called by name so suddenly, Gu Tang answered instinctively, “Mm?”
“What are you thinking about?”
Young Master Gu’s eyes were black and bottomless, as though they could see right through him.
Gu Tang’s cheeks flushed at once, and he stammered, “Nothing…”
At this point, evening self-study was nearly over.
Most of the students had already gone home. Only a few boarders remained in the classroom finishing homework, and the students on duty were busy cleaning.
No one noticed the two boys seated at the back of the fourth row.
The innocent boy’s face was red, and even though he thought he was hiding it well, his expression had already written his feelings all over it.
Gu Qinian lowered his eyes and asked quietly, “Is it something you can’t say?”
“No!”
Gu Tang’s ears burned hot, and he shook his head so hard he looked like a little bobblehead.
A tiny sense of tension rose inside him too.
Young Master Gu wasn’t about to do something in the classroom, was he?
As it turned out, he had thought too much.
Gu Qinian only said calmly, “Good. Then keep working.”
After that, he turned back to his own paper.
He was stricter than the class representative.
Gu Tang: “…”
Hmph, he was even worse than Zhou the Taskmaster!
Back when Gu Tang had wanted to participate in the school sports meet and run the 3000 meters, Young Master Gu had trained him in exactly the same cold and ruthless way.
The result had actually been pretty good.
He had won third place in the 3000-meter race.
So Young Master Gu’s training methods were clearly effective, but did he really have to be this cold…
Before Gu Tang could think any further, a startled cry suddenly sounded from the side.
“Ah! My glasses—”
Duan Zhengyu, who was cleaning on duty, lowered his head and his glasses slipped off his face. He reached for them, but because he could not see clearly, he accidentally stepped into the dustpan. His center of gravity wobbled, and he pitched forward.
Unfortunately, his hand landed squarely on Gu Tang’s shoulder.
Gu Tang was pushed sideways and fell straight into Young Master Gu’s arms.
Gu Tang: “!!!”
Little Glasses finally managed to steady himself and panicked. “Sorry, sorry…”
“They’re over there.”
Gu Qinian’s voice remained calm.
Without his glasses, Duan Zhengyu turned forty-five degrees in the direction of the voice. “Sorry, sorry!”
Gu Tang, still sprawled in Young Master Gu’s arms, felt the arm around his back tighten.
“It’s fine.”
Gu Qinian’s tone remained indifferent. “Your glasses are at your nine o’clock. Bend down and you’ll get them.”
Duan Zhengyu put his glasses back on and looked toward them. Seeing that he had pushed Gu Tang straight into Gu Qinian’s arms and that Gu Tang had not even sat up yet, he asked worriedly, “Is Tangtang okay?”
“He’s fine.”
Gu Qinian’s tone remained cool. “Go finish your work.”
As he spoke, he still did not lower the arm he had around Gu Tang’s back.
Duan Zhengyu felt that the way the two of them looked was a little strange, but he could not quite pinpoint why. He just answered “Oh, oh,” then turned and went back to cleaning.
He was not even a boarder.
The sooner he finished, the sooner he could go home.
“…”
Gu Tang could feel that the hand on his back was extremely restrained. Although it held him close, the hand itself was clenched into a fist and was not really touching him fully.
In this position, all he had to do was raise his head and he would be facing the other boy’s chin.
Gu Tang felt embarrassed and did not dare move.
Seeing the boy lie there obediently and motionless in his arms, Gu Qinian pressed his lips together, then helped him sit upright. “Keep working.”
Gu Tang: “?”
…That was it?
How cold.
Forget kissing him—even a hug would have been something!
Gu Tang felt a little upset. He turned away with a pout and went back to his worksheet.
The system had been right!
Young Master Gu really was the type who stopped cherishing something once he had gotten it!
It was only homework—what was so hard about that?
He would finish everything in minutes and show him!
Gu Tang bent his head over the desk and attacked the worksheets furiously. The pen scratched loudly across the paper as he completed one sheet after another, like a desperate warrior.
Meanwhile, Gu Qinian kept the hand that had touched Gu Tang’s shoulder lowered at his side and quietly rubbed his fingertips together…
Gu Tang got so absorbed in doing problems that he blasted through three entire worksheets in one go.
Only when he finally felt tired and lifted his head to stretch his neck did he realize that the whole classroom was empty.
Only he and Young Master Gu were left.
“What time is it…”
Gu Tang stretched lazily.
He had not even expected the cold and aloof Young Master Gu to check the time for him, so he glanced at the wall clock himself and saw it was almost half past ten. So he called out to the big block of ice next to him.
“Nian-Nian, let’s go back to the dorm.”
The “block of ice” suddenly called his name without warning. “Gu Tang.”
Gu Tang turned to him. “What?”
Gu Qinian’s eyes were no longer as cold as they had been moments ago. The corners of his narrow eyes relaxed, and there was even a trace of gentleness and helplessness in them. “Are you angry?”
Gu Tang: “?”
He absolutely was not!
“I want to touch you, and I want to kiss you too.”
Young Master Gu’s face was still expressionless, but the words he said made Gu Tang’s heart pound and his face flush.
At once Gu Tang’s face turned bright red, and he nervously looked around. “We’re still in the classroom! What are you saying?!”
“But we already agreed we would wait until after the college entrance exams before dating.”
Gu Qinian looked at him seriously. “A promise should be kept, shouldn’t it?”
Gu Tang blinked.
What did that mean?
Was Young Master Gu explaining himself to him?
He seemed to be trying to tell Gu Tang why he had been acting so distant lately.
“If I get too close, it’ll be very hard to hold back.”
Gu Qinian reached out and rubbed the fluffy top of the boy’s head. “Sorry. I made you worry.”
“I didn’t…”
Gu Tang averted his gaze and protested weakly.
Gu Qinian did not expose him. He only curved his lips slightly and graciously said, “Mm. Then I’m the one who overthought things. You’ve been studying very seriously the whole time.”
“…”
Gu Tang felt as though there might be something wrong with him.
All it took was getting his head patted, and his heart would race again.
Completely unaware that the look on his face had already betrayed him, he stubbornly said, “Of course. I want to get into Hua University.”
Young Master Gu’s own goal was Hua University, the top university in the country.
Even at a school with such strong academics as Jiang City No. 1 High, the number of students admitted to Hua University every year could be counted on two hands.
That alone showed how difficult it was to get in.
A long time ago, Gu Tang had never been especially interested in these hypercompetitive schools. He had only wanted to get into some art college and spend university life in a relaxed, carefree way.
But now he had changed.
Not because he suddenly wanted to become a grinder.
Rather, there was now a fire burning inside him.
In his previous life, because he had been hospitalized for so long, he had wasted everything. His life had been dull and meaningless. But this time, he genuinely wanted to see how far he could go and how high he could reach.
Just like that 3000-meter race at the school sports meet.
Training had been hard, but after he endured it and looked back afterward, all he remembered was how beautiful it had been.
Even if he had never placed, it would have been fine.
As long as Young Master Gu had been there with him through those little fragments of life, that would already have been enough.
The college entrance exam was the same.
As the future heir of the Gu family, Young Master Gu could easily have skipped it without consequence, yet he still chose to walk through this part of life with him and make it complete.
So why should Gu Tang back down?
Once he had sorted out his thoughts, he lifted his face. “I want to get into the same university as Nian-Nian.”
The boy’s round eyes shone brightly, full of determination.
Gu Qinian ruffled his hair. “Mm. Let’s work hard together.”
“Let’s do it!”
Gu Tang was suddenly filled with fighting spirit. He packed up two more worksheets to take back to the dorm and do after showering.
Then his hand was caught by Young Master Gu.
“You wrote a lot today. You’ve already exceeded the plan.”
“Let me hold your hand for a while so you can relax.”
Gu Tang curved his eyes. “Okay.”
Young Master Gu really was worthy of becoming the future head of the Gu family.
His self-control was incredibly strong.
Gu Tang had not noticed it before, but once he paid closer attention, he realized that sometimes Young Master Gu clearly wanted to get close to him, yet forced himself to stop.
At times like those, even though there was no expression on his face, the tips of his ears would flush bright red.
It was… absurdly innocent.
Once Gu Tang noticed that, his playful side took over.
As long as their study goals for the day were finished, he would seize every chance to tease him and even pinch those bright red ears with delight.
It was only after he realized that Young Master Gu had started taking cold showers frequently that Gu Tang settled down.
What if he caught a cold from always showering in cold water?
This was his Nian-Nian. Gu Tang would feel bad.
As the college entrance exam drew closer, time became tighter and tighter.
Gu Tang became busy too and no longer had the spare energy to keep thinking about his issues with Young Master Gu.
Hua University was a comprehensive university, but it also had art-related majors.
Young Master Gu gathered all the relevant information for him and suggested that he take the special admission exams for the arts departments.
Getting into a good school was important, but if he could not choose a major he liked, then the next four years would not be enjoyable at all.
Gu Tang loved art, and he had obvious talent for it. He sat for both the Fine Arts and Music special admissions exams at Hua University.
The results were half expected.
Gu Tang achieved very strong scores.
The other half, however, came as a surprise.
Rumor had it that the teachers from Hua University’s Fine Arts and Music departments had practically come to blows over who got to claim one especially talented student.
Gu Tang knew nothing about that.
Privately, he had already decided that if he passed both special admissions, he was more inclined toward Fine Arts.
The first reason was that he loved drawing—especially drawing Young Master Gu. The second was that Hua University’s Fine Arts building was right next to the Finance and Management building.
That would make it very convenient for him to go find Nian-Nian in the future.
By June, the weather had grown steadily hotter.
As one of the official exam sites for the national college entrance exam that year, Jiang City No. 1 High not only hosted its own senior students, but also many students from other schools.
The last exam ended.
Gu Tang was like a little bird newly out of the nest, flapping his invisible wings as he flew out of the exam hall.
At first glance he spotted the figure standing in the distance beside the flower bed.
Young Master Gu truly upheld his top-student persona. Even during the college entrance exam, he had handed in his paper early and come over to wait outside Gu Tang’s hall.
Gu Qinian was tall, with broad shoulders, a slim waist, and long legs. His face was striking enough to attract anyone’s attention. His features were so perfect and sculpted that he hardly looked real, more like some male lead modeled out of a game. Even just standing there, he drew countless sideways glances.
The students of Jiang City No. 1 High were used to seeing the student council president and knew his temperament. Normally they would never dare provoke him.
But today there were also many students from other schools, and the exam had just ended.
Some girls boldly went up to ask for his contact information.
Gu Tang saw Young Master Gu wave them off, his gaze still fixed in Gu Tang’s direction, a trace of irritation surfacing in his eyes.
Feeling mischievous, Gu Tang deliberately stayed where he was and did not move.
At last, Gu Qinian could take no more. He mouthed silently: Come here.
“Hehe—”
Gu Tang burst out laughing, then flapped his nonexistent little wings and flew toward him.
He launched himself right into Young Master Gu’s broad embrace.
The next second, both his feet left the ground.
Then he felt a little tickle at the top of his head.
It seemed that Young Master Gu had kissed the crown of it.
Gu Tang felt a little shy and twisted awkwardly. “It’s hot out. I’m sweaty.”
“Is that so?”
As if to confirm it, Gu Qinian kissed him a few more times. “No. You smell nice.”
He was not saying it just to be nice.
The boy carried the scent of fresh grass after rain, mixed with a faint sweetness. He truly smelled good.
That only made Gu Tang more embarrassed. He pushed lightly against the hard chest in front of him. “There are so many people around!”
“Let them look.”
Young Master Gu’s tone remained flat, but Gu Tang could hear that he was in an excellent mood, so he stopped resisting and let him do as he pleased.
That image of the two of them hugging under the tree was posted to the campus forum that very same day.
“Is this something my eyes are allowed to witness?!”
“My youth is complete—I knew the CP I shipped was real, sob sob…”
“Nonsense, it’s obviously pure brotherly affection!”
“The person upstairs needs glasses. No matter how you look at it, there isn’t a shred of brotherly affection there!”
“Stop dreaming. How could the student council president possibly be dating?”
“Who cares? He’s already graduated!”
…
Some people may have left the world of the school, but their legends still lingered everywhere within it.
No matter how much the campus forum argued, neither Gu Tang nor Gu Qinian saw any of it.
All their student council duties had already been officially handed over to the next group.
The student council president and publicity minister both stepped down at the same time and were jokingly referred to as “the immortals retiring into seclusion.”
The only one who really cared about the forum was the King of Gossip himself, Zhu Xu. “Ah, not being able to read the forum anymore is so lonely!”
A few of them were packing their luggage in the dorm.
Hearing that, Xie Qian looked up. “Why are you lonely?”
Zhu Xu hugged himself dramatically. “Because from now on no one will be able to witness the legendary stories I leave behind…”
“? Legendary stories? You?”
Xie Qian curled his lip in disdain and went back to packing.
Zhu Xu floated over to Gu Tang and Gu Qinian, holding an imaginary microphone up in front of them. “Let the longest-serving student council president and publicity minister in school history tell us—do you feel even a tiny bit sentimental?”
“No.”
Gu Qinian was utterly cold.
Zhu Xu pouted. “President, you’re heartless.”
Then he turned with great expectation toward Gu Tang. “Tangtang definitely feels emotional inside!”
“Actually, not really.”
After giving that honest answer, Gu Tang turned and looked at Young Master Gu with a smile in his eyes.
He and Young Master Gu did not have to separate, so what was there to feel sad about?
Gu Qinian thought exactly the same.
Now that he had already obtained the most precious treasure, he barely had time to be happy—where would there be room left for sorrow?
Zhu Xu: “…”
“No, seriously, what are you two always staring at each other for?!”
“You’ve already been looking at each other for over ten years and you still aren’t sick of it. When you go home, the two of you will still have each other, but after graduation the rest of us will be scattered all over the place. The least you could do is look at me and Xie Qian a little more!”
Zhu Xu complained miserably.
How was it that now that graduation had come, he was the only one feeling sour and sentimental?
Those two heartless people knew nothing except how to keep shoveling dog food straight into his mouth!
Xie Qian came over too. “Zhu Xu is right. University only lasts four years, but the six of us lived together for six years. That’s no shallow kind of fate.”
Zhu Xu exclaimed, “A dog actually managed to spit out ivory for once!”
The smile on Xie Qian’s face instantly froze.
On the very last day before leaving the dorm, the two of them got into another fight.
Gu Tang hurriedly pulled them apart. “Alright, alright, stop fighting. How about we gather everyone and go celebrate together?”
Xie Qian was still grabbing Zhu Xu by the neck. “I want hotpot.”
Gu Tang answered at once, “Fine fine fine.”
Zhu Xu was still prying at Xie Qian’s fingers around his neck when he suddenly smiled shyly. “Can I bring family?”
Gu Tang: “???”
“I really didn’t expect this! You actually have a girlfriend!”
When Zhu Xu showed up with two girls, everyone’s faces immediately lit up with gossip.
Zhu Xu gave an awkward little cough and, for once acting seriously, introduced them. “This is my girlfriend, Yu Xinxin. And the one beside her is her best friend, Zhang Xiaoya.”
“Hello.”
Gu Tang politely greeted the two girls.
They were eating hotpot in one of the Gu family’s private clubs. The fruit platters were already prepared, but Gu Tang had extra fresh coconuts brought over too so that each girl could have one to drink and cool off with.
Xie Qian jumped up and hooked an arm around Zhu Xu’s neck. “Confess honestly! When did this start? Are you even our brother anymore? You didn’t say a word!”
Zhu Xu scratched his nose. “It’s been a year. Speaking of which, Gu Qinian was actually our matchmaker.”
Gu Qinian & Gu Tang: “?”
Everyone else: “???”
When it came to telling the story of his love life, Zhu Xu’s huge booming voice shrank into a little mosquito hum. He muttered shyly, “Xinxin is from No. 5 High. She came to watch Gu Qinian’s basketball game in the second year of high school, got lost on our campus, and I was the one who showed her the way…”
The whole time he spoke, Yu Xinxin stared at him without blinking.
Judging purely by the way she looked at him, one would have thought Zhu Xu was some unparalleled handsome heartthrob.
Then Zhu Xu suddenly remembered something and turned to grab Yu Xinxin’s hand. “But you’re not allowed to like Gu Qinian anymore, okay!”
Yu Xinxin nodded. “Mm. I only like you.”
“Hehe.”
Zhu Xu scratched his head and smiled with simple, honest delight.
Gu Tang sighed warmly, “They’re so sweet.”
Gu Qinian reached up and stroked his hair, thinking: We’re not any worse.
Xie Qian looked at the two deskmates who were forever touching each other, then at Zhu Xu, who had secretly been in a relationship for a whole year while pretending to suffer dog food with the rest of them, and suddenly felt lonelier than ever. He immediately threw himself into Song Chen’s arms. “Brother Song, look at them!”
Song Chen patted his head. “You’ll have one too someday.”
Duan Zhengyu adjusted his glasses. “I don’t understand any of you. What’s so interesting about dating? Is it more interesting than mathematics?”
Xie Qian turned grief into appetite and dumped several trays of meat into the pot. “There’s no explaining it to a math maniac like you!”
Fang Chi, however, actually agreed with Little Glasses. “I think dating is still less interesting than being Tangtang’s assistant.”
At that, he looked at Gu Tang with hopeful eyes. “Tangtang, when are you going to act again? Can you take me with you?”
Gu Tang scratched his head. “Uh, I don’t have plans for that right now.”
Fang Chi: “Wuu…”
To comfort him, Gu Tang personally picked out a piece of tripe from the pot and was about to put it in his bowl—
only for Young Master Gu to intercept it.
Gu Qinian said, “I haven’t even eaten anything you’ve cooked. Why should he get it first?”
Seeing that Fang Chi looked like he was about to cry, Gu Tang smacked Young Master Gu lightly. “You don’t even like tripe. Give it to him.”
Gu Qinian: “……”
Right in front of everyone, Young Master Gu calmly ate the piece of tripe Gu Tang had been holding in his chopsticks.
Fang Chi: “Wuu wuu wuu…”
Gu Tang hurriedly comforted him. “I’ll get you another one.”
Gu Qinian: “You’re not allowed.”
In an instant, the private room descended into chaos.
“Speaking of which, Xiaoya is your fan!”
Zhu Xu pointed at his girlfriend’s best friend and told Gu Tang.
Everyone felt awkward with the servers lingering nearby, so they had all been sent away and were now serving themselves.
Gu Tang was in the middle of putting more ingredients into the pot when he heard that and looked up. “Ah, really?”
The moment Zhang Xiaoya saw him look over, she nodded like mad. “Yes yes yes, Little Ninth, I like you so much!”
It had been a very long time since anyone had called him “Little Ninth.”
Gu Tang smiled shyly. “Thank you.”
But the excitement on Zhang Xiaoya’s face suddenly froze when she met the gaze of the person sitting beside him.
How strange!
Even though it was June and the height of summer, she suddenly felt cold from head to toe.
As if she had been frozen stiff in her seat!
Zhang Xiaoya: The person next to Little Ninth is terrifying…
“The alcohol’s here!”
Someone called out. The servers brought in a tray of drinks in various colors, and the two girls even had cocktails specially made for them.
Now that everyone was an adult, there was nothing wrong with drinking a little with hotpot.
But Gu Tang had already had one drunken experience and did not dare drink again.
“Drink this.”
Gu Qinian had separately ordered him a bottle of fresh juice. He carefully wiped down the crystal glass, poured a full one, and held it to Gu Tang’s lips.
Gu Tang did not stand on ceremony at all. With both his hands busy cooking things in the hotpot, he simply drank from the glass as Young Master Gu held it.
Then he smiled brightly. “Strawberry juice! I love it!”
“I know you do.”
Gu Qinian knew Gu Tang’s tastes inside out, and seeing that the boy’s hands were too busy to hold a drink, he simply fed him one sip at a time.
Zhang Xiaoya happened to see all of this.
In that instant she completely forgot how terrifying he had seemed earlier, and her eyes began sparkling wildly. So doting! So ship-worthy!!!
As they kept eating, people started getting drunk one by one.
Zhu Xu held his girlfriend and began to cry dramatically. “After we all go to university, we won’t be in the same city anymore, and us brothers won’t get to see each other every day. You all have to miss me!”
“We will…”
Xie Qian had gotten drunk too and had buried himself in Song Chen’s arms. He still had enough awareness left to answer Zhu Xu.
Little Glasses drank until his face turned bright red, then produced a Rubik’s cube from somewhere and click click click solved it, holding it proudly in his palm.
Fang Chi was drunk as well and clapped for him, giving him a big thumbs-up. “Amazing!”
After praising Little Glasses, Fang Chi turned his head and looked around in confusion. “…Eh, where’s our Tangtang, little director?”
Gu Tang and Gu Qinian had disappeared at some point.
Zhang Xiaoya had just gone to the restroom, and on the way back she was still sighing to herself, “As expected of a Gu family private club—even the bathroom is luxurious…”
If it were not for the blessing of Little Ninth, she would never have set foot in a place like this!
The Gu family’s private club was gorgeous.
Roman-style decor, sculpted columns, even a balcony…
Zhang Xiaoya passed by a few steps, then suddenly backed up again.
In disbelief, she rubbed her eyes.
What had she just seen?!
In the gentle moonlight, two overlapping shadows stretched long across the white marble balcony.
In a dim corner where the light was weak, the taller, straighter boy had the smaller one pressed against the balcony railing. One head was bent down, the other neck tilted upward.
Like two swans crossing necks in a kiss.
