Chapter 13: Hypocrisy and Arrogance
Before they reached the palace, the communicator inside the car suddenly chimed.
Shi Sheng could tell that the person speaking seemed to be Alried.
“Marshal, urgent military intelligence.”
Elaine looked at the report that followed, and his brows and eyes darkened.
It was military confidential information, so Shi Sheng consciously turned his head away. Before long, however, he heard Elaine report a set of coordinates to the communicator:
“Send an aircraft over.”
Then a hand gently landed on the top of his head.
Shi Sheng felt as if an electric current had rushed through his entire body. He instinctively turned back to look at the Alpha, his amber eyes widening slightly like a puppy’s.
Whenever he showed an expression like this, Elaine’s heart always softened so much that it hardly seemed like his own.
“Sorry.” Shi Sheng heard the Empire’s guardian deity apologize to him. “I need to leave for a while. Can I have Izel accompany you inside first?”
Shi Sheng could not help feeling a little disappointed. Every moment he spent with Elaine felt like something he had gained for free, and who knew whether he would ever have another chance to attend a ball with him next time.
But he also knew that the Empire could not do without Elaine.
Elaine was a hero.
He smiled and shook his head, then used his voice device to pop up an emoji of a puppy making a heart.
“It, is, fine.”
“Elaine, does, not, need, to, apologize.”
In that instant, Elaine almost could not control his hand. He wanted to press down on the back of the Omega’s neck and trap him in his arms.
But he did not want to be an Alpha who offended Shi Sheng.
Elaine quietly suppressed the impulse in his heart and calmly contacted Izel. “Come over.”
Before getting out of the car, he reached out and adjusted Shi Sheng’s anti-bite collar.
“There’s an alarm inside this.” Elaine lowered his voice. Shi Sheng felt his breath lightly brush over his skin, making him unable to help trembling.
“If you run into trouble, remember to use it.” Elaine’s tone gave people a great sense of security. “I will come immediately.”
Shi Sheng felt a little overwhelmed by the favor and quickly waved his hands.
“Not, trouble.”
He meant that he did not want to trouble Elaine, but Elaine was drawn in by the Omega’s puppy-like eyes and, for once, felt a trace of teasing interest.
“Mm, I’m not trouble.” Elaine curved the corner of his lips. “This is what your Alpha should do.”
Shi Sheng’s face instantly turned red, and he waved his hands even more frantically.
Alried’s urging voice sounded inside the car. “Marshal, it’s time to go.”
Elaine withdrew the smile from his eyes and lowered his head to look at Shi Sheng. “I’ll be back soon.”
Shi Sheng nodded and waved at Elaine.
The Alpha’s back disappeared into the wind. Shi Sheng was dazed for a while, until Izel bent down and got into the car.
Izel’s face still carried a smile that did not reach his eyes. “What bad timing, little Shi Yi.”
Shi Sheng pressed his lips together and used his voice device to greet him.
“Relax. Big Brother told me to protect you, so naturally I’ll do my duty.” Izel’s scumbag-like tone really was easy to make Omegas’ hearts move—except for Shi Sheng.
[They’re both brothers, but Izel is nowhere near as easy to get along with as Elaine.]
Izel: ?
What nonsense was this little Omega talking about?
[He’s going to the palace with me now, so what about Noah? Doesn’t that give Noah plenty of chances to meet the crown prince?]
[No, the problem has to be solved at the source. Noah can’t be allowed to meet the crown prince. What if the crown prince really helps him deal with the Carlos family?]
The smile on Izel’s lips paused slightly.
[Mm, I must keep a close eye on Noah later! I can’t let him find a chance to go to the back garden.]
[Hopefully Ji Sui and Lowell have some awareness and don’t come bother me.]
Listening to Shi Sheng’s muttering thoughts, Izel’s eyes flashed as he seemed to ponder something.
Looking at the figures walking in through the garden entrance, Ji Sui’s face once again showed a smile.
Even though their reputation was not good, every member of the Carlos family was still someone who attracted attention whenever they appeared.
As the younger brother of the Empire’s Marshal, Izel had charmed countless Omegas in the capital with his outstanding appearance and affectionate, gentle personality.
But at the same time, they also knew that marrying into the Carlos family was not a good thing.
Besides, no one had ever truly gained Izel’s favor.
Thus, these Omegas had reached a consensus—Izel belonged to everyone.
As for which dance partner Izel would bring in, the Omegas had been discussing it endlessly beforehand.
At this moment, they looked at the Omega beside the blond nobleman. That person’s photos had already been circulated countless times on the Star Network.
For Shi Yi’s first ball after marrying into the Carlos family, Thanatos had actually only asked his younger brother to bring him in!
“Look at the distance between Izel and Shi Yi. It’s wider than the galaxy.”
“It must be Thanatos… ah, no, it must be Lord Elaine’s instruction. Who would want to bring an Omega from a political marriage to a ball?”
“Poor Izel, losing a desired dance partner just like that.”
“It’s my first time seeing Shi Yi. He is very pretty, but he doesn’t look very happy.”
“Nonsense. If I married into the Carlos family, I’d look even more dead than him.”
Shi Sheng listened to everyone’s discussions, lowered his eyes, and treated all these voices as wind passing by his ears.
[Hmph, you’re the one who looks dead. I’ve touched Elaine’s abs. I’m not dead at all.]
Izel: “…Excuse me for a moment.”
Shi Sheng came back to his senses, but before he could respond, all he saw was Izel’s hurriedly departing back.
He followed the direction and saw Noah’s figure flash by.
It seemed the other party had taken the opportunity to slip away.
Shi Sheng felt Izel was a little pitiful. Izel wholeheartedly believed Noah was his white moonlight, chasing after him even at the ball.
So he did not mind Izel leaving him behind. In any case, Elaine would be back soon.
Shi Sheng encouraged himself in his heart for a while, pretending not to notice the curious gazes around him.
“…Xiao Yi.”
A gentle, worried voice sounded. Shi Sheng quickly raised his head and smiled.
But when he saw Ji Sui behind Mother Shi, he smiled and rolled his eyes in a way Mother Shi could not notice.
Mother Shi quickly walked over and grabbed his hand, looking him up and down. “My child, how are you?”
Shi Sheng took out his voice device. “Mother, I, am, very, well.”
Naturally, Mother Shi did not believe him. Her eyes reddened. “You’ve suffered.”
Shi Sheng wanted to say that he had not suffered, that Elaine was very gentle with him.
But before he could press the voice device, Ji Sui’s hypocritical voice had already sounded:
“Aunt, don’t worry. I think Xiao Yi’s complexion looks quite good. He must have only been too busy to send messages home.”
Shi Sheng expressionlessly lifted his eyes and glanced at him.
Mother Shi immediately became even more worried. “Is Elaine good to you? My poor child, how could that family be easy to get along with…”
With a slight force from his hand, Shi Sheng pressed down on his mother’s wrist and shook his head with a faint smile.
Ji Sui cried out in surprise, “Aunt, mind your words.”
Mother Shi hurriedly stopped speaking. Her eyes as she looked at Shi Sheng were tearful, and her face had also turned a little pale.
A nameless anger rose in Shi Sheng’s heart.
His mother had always been in poor health. Because of this, even before he entered the Carlos family and met Elaine, he had always comforted his mother and kept her from worrying.
Before this, after discovering the ugly affair between Ji Sui and Lowell, he had also hidden the truth for the sake of his mother’s health, only saying that he did not like Lowell.
But Ji Sui was pushing it too far. He had to keep intentionally or unintentionally making his mother worry, stepping right on Shi Sheng’s sore spot!
Shi Sheng’s gaze landed motionlessly on Ji Sui’s face. His usually obedient eyes became incomparably cold.
Ji Sui froze for a moment, feeling that this Shi Sheng was both familiar and unfamiliar.
“What’s wrong, Xiao Yi?” Ji Sui paused before smiling again. “Don’t be unhappy. Not having a dance partner isn’t a big deal. Why don’t I ask Lowell to dance the opening dance with you?”
Mother Shi’s expression froze slightly, and she looked at Shi Sheng with worry.
Shi Sheng’s brows and eyes moved. Suddenly, his eyes curved, revealing a smile.
He picked up his voice device and slowly pressed it.
“Thank you very much, but according to imperial etiquette, Lowell cannot be my dance partner.”
For some reason, this mechanical voice was especially smooth.
Ji Sui’s expression changed slightly.
Before this, he had been immersed in the joy of winning over Shi Sheng and had completely forgotten—
Shi Sheng’s current identity was the Marshal’s wife. According to the rules, as the son of a cabinet minister, Lowell had no qualifications to invite Shi Sheng to dance.
And as Lowell’s fiancé, Ji Sui should even perform a greeting salute to Shi Sheng according to etiquette.
Shi Sheng looked at Ji Sui with a smiling expression.
Ji Sui’s smile could no longer hold. Performing the salute was wrong, but not performing it was also wrong.
Just as they were stuck in this deadlock, an arrogant voice cut in.
“Xiao Sui, Shi Yi, what are you doing?”
Shi Sheng narrowed his eyes and did not respond.
The newcomer had already walked over quickly, wrapping an arm around Ji Sui’s shoulder. First, he glanced at Shi Sheng, then perfunctorily performed a junior’s greeting to Mother Shi.
“Auntie, sorry for interrupting.” But there was no apology in his tone.
In the past, because Father Shi had considered this Alpha as a match for Shi Sheng, Mother Shi had been somewhat ingratiating toward him for her child’s sake.
But Lowell did not think much of Shi Sheng. He preferred Shi Yi, who was dazzling and admired at the military academy, and Ji Sui, who was gentle and agreeable.
Shi Sheng looked at Lowell’s arrogant expression. The other party should know about the substitute marriage.
“Shi Yi, what are you doing? Making things difficult for Xiao Sui?” Lowell frowned tightly, practically questioning him.
Even with Mother Shi present, he did not restrain his attitude toward Shi Sheng.
Shi Sheng curved the corner of his lips and pressed his voice device.
“You came at just the right time, Lowell. Please demonstrate for your fiancé how to salute the Marshal’s wife.”
People around them had already been drawn over and were looking their way.
Lowell’s eyes darkened. He looked incredulous. “You want me to salute you?”
Mother Shi quickly held down Shi Sheng’s hand and shook her head.
In Mother Shi’s eyes, Lowell knew the secret of the substitute marriage, so they could not afford to offend him right now.
“Shi Yi.” Lowell suppressed his displeasure and deliberately emphasized the pronunciation of the name. “I think there’s no need for such tedious etiquette between our two families.”
The warning in those words was very obvious.
To be fair, this was indeed Shi Sheng’s weakness.
But that did not mean he had to keep tolerating Lowell and Ji Sui again and again.
Shi Sheng did not hear the whispers around him.
Not far away, Yu Mian, who had just entered, heard Lowell’s last sentence. His footsteps paused, and he crossed his arms to look over.
This guy was now a member of the Carlos family. What was he saying to another Alpha?
Shi Sheng emotionlessly curved his lips and was about to press the voice device again when another voice suddenly came from the entrance—
“His Royal Highness the Crown Prince has arrived!”
