Waiting for a Breakup Every Day – CH49

Confession

Chapter 49: Confession

“I don’t want to act in Qi Sheng’s film anymore. Otherwise, if I go back to the set, I’ll just get messed with by your beloved again. And I want to terminate my contract with the company—immediately, right now.” Jiang Yu didn’t mince words and seized the chance to state his demands.

“Fine. I’ll have Ji Xu withdrawn. You two won’t see each other on set anymore.” Han Cheng replied cheerfully, completely twisting Jiang Yu’s meaning.

“It’s me who’s quitting. I don’t want to act. Me.” Jiang Yu emphasized again.

“Alright, I got it.” Han Cheng’s phone rang. After glancing at it, he smiled and said, “You rest well. You don’t need to worry about the crew. I’ll head out first.”

“I’m not worried—I want to quit!” Jiang Yu shouted at Han Cheng’s retreating back.

Han Cheng left without turning his head. When the door closed, Jiang Yu rolled his eyes so hard they almost flipped into the back of his skull.
Damn bastard—drawing a circle to curse you, may your ears truly be deaf.

Jiang Yu decided he was staying in the hospital. He refused to believe Han Cheng would actually carry him to the set to film. As long as he terminated the contract quickly, this bastard wouldn’t be able to control him anymore.

“Wang Huan, find me a wheelchair. I’m going to the company to terminate the contract,” Jiang Yu said impatiently, struggling to sit up—only for the sharp pain in his waist to force him back onto the bed.

“My dear Brother Yu, please don’t torture yourself.” Wang Huan panicked and went to get Dr. Zhang, uneasy.

Dr. Zhang came to check him over, found nothing serious, and again urged Jiang Yu to rest properly. Jiang Yu pinched his own waist and could only give up.

Lying in the hospital, bored out of his mind, Jiang Yu passed the time scrolling on his phone. When his eyes got tired, he switched to watching TV.

Eat, sleep; sleep, eat. Over the past few days, Jiang Yu had visibly put on some weight. When Wang Huan said he’d gained weight, Jiang Yu didn’t believe it—until Wang Huan showed him daily photos. Comparing them after a week, the weight gain was obvious.

Losing weight was painful. Jiang Yu had already cut back on food, and when he got hungry, he ate fruit to stave it off. His weight still wouldn’t go down, but as long as he didn’t gain more, he was satisfied.

[Ji Xu kidnapped; kidnappers demand a ten-billion-yuan ransom from Han Cheng.]

On TV, the gossip news suddenly dropped a bombshell. Jiang Yu tossed aside the apple he was halfway through and stared at the screen.

“It’s reported that last night, after filming, Ji Xu was forcibly taken on his way back to the hotel. His assistant, makeup artist, and other staff were all attacked and seriously injured; they are currently in critical condition in the hospital.

According to staff who have regained consciousness, the kidnappers all wore masks, making their faces impossible to see. Four men wielded baseball bats, striking hard and targeting the head, seemingly indifferent to human life.

Police speculate the kidnappers may be a group of desperate criminals. If mishandled, they could kill to silence witnesses. Ji Xu’s life is in serious danger.”

His life was in danger?!

When Jiang Yu first heard that Ji Xu had been kidnapped, his immediate reaction was schadenfreude—serves him right for kicking his waist and causing a second injury.

But hearing that Ji Xu’s life was at risk, Jiang Yu’s feelings grew complicated. He and Ji Xu hadn’t reached the point where he wished the other dead. Maybe Ji Xu would love to see him dead—but Jiang Yu didn’t harbor that level of hatred toward Ji Xu.

Tsk tsk, they all had it coming. Who told him to flaunt his relationship with Han Cheng so openly? Everyone knows both their families are rich. And those kidnappers really dared to bite off more than they could chew—demanding a ten-billion ransom. Ten billion in cash could probably crush someone to death.

Ji Xu’s kidnapping instantly set the entire entertainment industry ablaze. It stayed on the trending searches for three straight days, and every kind of news—late-night, morning, nationwide broadcasts—covered it.

It wasn’t that Ji Xu was especially famous; it was the ten-billion ransom that got everyone boiling. Nearly the whole country was watching to see how it would end.

Kou Dehai posted a photo of Qi Sheng looking utterly miserable. With both Jiang Yu and Ji Xu in trouble, and Han Cheng refusing to replace the actor, Qi Sheng’s film could only be put on hold. The National Day release slot was definitely out of reach.

Jiang Yu silently sympathized with Qi Sheng for three seconds. There wasn’t anything else he could help with anyway.

Perhaps the impact of the incident was too great, or perhaps Han Cheng spared no effort in the rescue—after three days, Ji Xu was saved.

From the footage released by the media, aside from being a bit dirty, Ji Xu didn’t seem to have suffered any serious injuries.

The kidnappers were also caught. What surprised Jiang Yu was that the kidnapper turned out to be someone he knew—Zhuang Da.

Just a short while ago, Zhuang Da had joined forces with Han Cheng to take down his own older brother, Zhuang Feng, and had taken over Zhuang Feng’s group. It had only been a few months, yet he’d already fallen out with Han Cheng, kidnapped Han Cheng’s beloved, and become a kidnapper.

“It must be because Han Cheng is terrible as a person—otherwise Zhuang Da wouldn’t have turned on him,” Jiang Yu thought, full of prejudice.

Jiang Yu looked up Zhuang Da’s company and was shocked to discover that the legal representative and majority shareholder had already become Han Cheng.

Everything clicked instantly. He’d stolen the man’s company—no wonder Zhuang Da went crazy, kidnapped Ji Xu, and demanded a ten-billion ransom.

Sure enough, Han Cheng’s character really was questionable.

Jiang Yu also felt a lingering sense of fear. Luckily, he and Han Cheng had already broken up. If Han Cheng hadn’t confirmed things with Ji Xu yet, and hadn’t broken up with him, Jiang Yu thought a bit narcissistically that maybe he would have been the one kidnapped.

Just as he was feeling relieved, Han Cheng walked in carrying a huge bouquet of red roses. This bastard usually dressed more stylishly than celebrities; today it was obvious he’d made an effort too, though his complexion wasn’t great. The dark circles under his eyes were heavy, and his lips were a little pale.

It was clear that rescuing Ji Xu had taken a great deal out of him.

Han Cheng smiled gently and easily, placed the big bouquet beside Jiang Yu, then leaned down lightly and hugged him, his voice filled with the relief of having finally relaxed:
“Finally, I can hold you.”

What did that mean? Why did he want to hold him? He’d just rescued his beloved and now he was here hugging him—this guy was still as scummy as ever.

Was Ji Xu hurt, and he couldn’t hold it in anymore, so he came to harass him again? Jiang Yu speculated about Han Cheng’s motives. He didn’t want to be a third party again and reached out, trying to push Han Cheng away.

Han Cheng didn’t insist. He followed Jiang Yu’s push and straightened up.

Jiang Yu was about to sneer and say something sarcastic when he suddenly saw the undisguised deep affection in Han Cheng’s eyes. He raised an eyebrow in surprise, the words stuck in his throat.

What exactly was wrong with this guy? What was he trying to do with that face full of tenderness?

Han Cheng stood up and reached out, touching Jiang Yu’s face. His fingers brushed lightly against his skin, the slightly cool temperature sending shivers up Jiang Yu’s scalp.

Today’s Han Cheng was far too strange.

“Is Ji Xu okay?” The touch was far too intimate. Jiang Yu tried to use Ji Xu’s name to remind Han Cheng that they had already broken up.

“He’s fine. Don’t mention him right now.” Even Ji Xu couldn’t block Han Cheng’s closeness. The bastard leaned over Jiang Yu again, hugging him, his cheek rubbing against Jiang Yu’s.

Jiang Yu pushed a few times without success and continued to use Ji Xu to remind him,“Why aren’t you staying with Ji Xu? He was just rescued—he must be really scared.”

Han Cheng seemed to sigh by his ear. He got up from Jiang Yu, picked up the roses by the bedside, pulled out one, and handed the rest to Wang Huan. “Find a vase and put them in water.”

Wang Huan took the flowers and went out to look for a vase, not coming back for a long time—clearly leaving the two of them some private space.

Holding that single red rose, Han Cheng presented it to Jiang Yu and asked with deep feeling, “Can I pursue you again?”

Jiang Yu’s head was full of question marks. What on earth was this man trying to do?

Stuffing the flower into Jiang Yu’s hand, Han Cheng said, “I never wanted to break up with you. I can explain.”

Then Han Cheng told Jiang Yu everything he’d done during this period.

After Han Cheng and Zhuang Da worked together to bring down Zhuang Feng, Zhuang Da took over the company and continued cooperating with Han Cheng.

But Han Cheng soon discovered that Zhuang Da was even more unhinged than his brother. Several young celebrities had been ruined by him, left with lifelong disabilities.

Han Cheng also discovered that Zhuang Da was secretly inquiring about the Han family, even bribing several high-level executives within the Han Group.

The Zhuang and Han families were roughly equal in power. In such large families, with so many people, it was impossible for everyone to be spotless—no family like that could withstand scrutiny.

Zhuang Da investigating the Han family clearly meant no good. Han Cheng didn’t make a fuss about it and began investigating the Zhuang family in turn.

Fortunately, Han Cheng found evidence of the Zhuang family’s crimes before Zhuang Da did. But considering that Zhuang Da was even more unhinged than Zhuang Feng and had no bottom line at all…

Han Cheng was afraid Zhuang Da would hurt Jiang Yu. That was why he broke up with Jiang Yu and openly flaunted his relationship with Ji Xu—the Ji family could protect Ji Xu well.

Han Cheng struck first. The Zhuang family suffered heavy losses and had no choice but to sacrifice Zhuang Da to protect the rest of the family. As expected, Zhuang Da retaliated by kidnapping Ji Xu to threaten Han Cheng.

The Han and Ji families had long been prepared, but it still took three days to rescue Ji Xu.

Han Cheng swallowed up Zhuang Da’s assets, and with several key members of the Zhuang family going down, their power shrank drastically.

Zhuang Da was also imprisoned for the kidnapping. The Zhuang family no longer posed a threat. When Han Cheng rescued Ji Xu, he explained everything clearly to him, then rushed off impatiently to find Jiang Yu.

Jiang Yu listened, completely dumbfounded. He only paid attention to the entertainment industry and never followed political affairs, so he hadn’t known that in recent days, news about a certain powerful figure with the surname Zhuang being brought down had caused such a huge stir.

“I’ve always had Wang Huan take photos of you. During this time, I’ve relied on your photos to ease how much I miss you,” Han Cheng said, showing Jiang Yu the pictures on his phone.

Jiang Yu never would have guessed that Wang Huan—the guy with thick eyebrows and honest-looking eyes—hadn’t been taking photos of him every day to document his weight gain, but to show them to Han Cheng.

“Jiang Yu, it’s been six years. I’m already used to having you by my side. I don’t know whether this is love, but during this time I’ve become certain that I can’t live without you. I used to be a bastard. I never even imagined I’d fall for you. I think I’ve fallen in love with you. Can you give me a chance? Let’s be together properly.”

Han Cheng’s sudden confession startled Jiang Yu a little. Because of his long-standing distrust of Han Cheng, hearing this confession didn’t bring him much happiness.

He had just heard about Han Cheng’s clashes with Zhuang Da. Although Han Cheng glossed over it with a few light sentences, it wasn’t hard to imagine how many schemes and intrigues were involved.

Jiang Yu even wondered whether it was only because Ji Xu had been kidnapped once that Han Cheng now wanted to start over with him, letting him replace Ji Xu.

If there were another kidnapping in the future, he would become the kidnappers’ first target—and then Han Cheng wouldn’t even need to rescue anyone.

Once doubt takes root, it doesn’t stop growing. Looking at Han Cheng’s deeply affectionate expression, Jiang Yu realized that in six years he had never once seen Han Cheng look like this. It felt far too unreal.

The more he thought about it, the more suspicious he became. Jiang Yu stayed silent, not wanting to respond to Han Cheng’s confession at all.

Han Cheng waited full of hope for Jiang Yu’s answer, but Jiang Yu’s increasingly doubtful expression extinguished that hope.

Han Cheng gave a bitter smile. It was all his own fault. He had treated Jiang Yu too badly before; it would probably be impossible for Jiang Yu to believe, in such a short time, that he had truly fallen in love.

But it didn’t matter. Time would reveal the truth of one’s heart. They still had a second six years, a third six years, even a lifetime to prove his love.

Han Cheng leaned over Jiang Yu again and bit his lips lightly in a wronged, aggrieved way, then said fiercely, “It’s fine if you don’t believe me right now. We’ve got a long road ahead. I’ll prove that I love you.

I take back the breakup. And don’t even think about terminating your contract with the company. I’ll make you a superstar. Jiang Yu, try to trust me, okay?”

“Can I say no?” Jiang Yu didn’t resist. He knew Han Cheng well—whether it was genuine love or simply wanting him as a substitute for Ji Xu, Han Cheng wasn’t going to let him go now.

“No.” Han Cheng refused with a wry smile, sealing Jiang Yu’s mouth that was always so sharp-tongued.

Sigh. He’d gotten happy for nothing—he was going to be fenced in by Han Cheng again.

Han Cheng meant what he said. Since he claimed he was going to pursue Jiang Yu again, he came every single day with a bouquet of roses, without fail.

Jiang Yu used to like roses very much. He used to think that all flowers that bloomed beautifully did so just to attract bees and butterflies—spineless things, really.

Only roses bloomed with thorns. Gorgeous and enchanting, yet not something just anyone could approach.

Just like himself. In the entertainment industry, he could shine brilliantly, but he wasn’t someone anyone could belittle or manipulate at will.

Later, Han Cheng plucked out his thorns and told him about many other thorny flowers—roses, wild roses, fan palms, thorn bamboo flowers, thorn fir flowers…

Han Cheng named so many thorny flowers that Jiang Yu realized he wasn’t unique after all. Thinking back to his hotheaded youth now, Jiang Yu felt embarrassed.

Besides flowers, Han Cheng had no idea where he’d learned those corny pick-up lines. Every day he came up with new ones to say to Jiang Yu.

“Baby, I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Oh.”

“You’re not going to ask me why? Because I’m too light to weigh down how much I miss you.”

“You weigh over one hundred thirty pounds.”

“Baby, today it’s either you die or I die.”

“I just mentioned your weight—it doesn’t mean you have to kill me.”

“You’re so cute I could die. I love you to death.”

“…”

“Baby, your package has arrived.”

“I didn’t buy anything.”

“My unrequited love has arrived.”

“…”

“Han Cheng, send a different flower tomorrow.”

“Sure. What kind of flowers do you like?”

“Foxtail grass.” Jiang Yu deliberately made things difficult. He really didn’t want to receive flowers anymore. The whole room reeked of roses, making his head ache.

“Baby, it’s already past foxtail grass season.”

“I don’t care. I want them.”

“Okay, okay. I promise I’ll bring them tomorrow.”

“And stop with the corny lines.”

“Then how am I supposed to express my love for you?”

“Love should be shown through actions, not just words.”

“Then I’ll tell you I love you a hundred times every day. Baby, I love you, I love you—”

“Shut up!”

“Alright. We’ll say it tonight instead.”

“…”

The next day, before Han Cheng even entered the room, Jiang Yu heard a sticky-sweet voice outside the door: “Baby, I’m here.”

Han Cheng came in holding a huge bouquet of fluffy, long flowers—red, purple, and green intertwined. From a distance, it actually looked pretty festive.

“Baby, here—foxtail grass.” Han Cheng stuffed the bouquet into Jiang Yu’s arms. Only then did Jiang Yu realize it was a very realistic bunch of fake flowers.

“Fake flowers? Is your heart fake too?” Jiang Yu finally found an excuse to start picking a fight.

“Baby, the flowering season for foxtail grass is already over. I can’t go against the laws of nature and get you real ones.

These flowers may be fake, but I specially flew to Jiangsu yesterday and commissioned a master of intangible cultural heritage velvet flowers to make them. This bouquet was really expensive.

If you keep them well, they can last a lifetime—just like my love for you, which will never change for a lifetime.”

“…” Bastard. So what if you’re rich?
