As people age, small health issues tend to crop up.
This was true in this world as well.
After Jian Mo announced that anyone feeling unwell could come to him for a consultation, the cave they were temporarily residing in became busy, with barely a moment of emptiness during the day.
When Kuang Ning, who had been out trading cured meat, returned and saw the crowd gathered at Jian Mo’s place, he was astonished. Pulling aside a familiar sub-beastman, he asked, “Is Doctor Jian Mo really able to cure illnesses?”
“Of course.” The sub-beastman showed him his leg. “You know how my leg aches every winter? After Doctor Jian Mo applied some medicine over the past two days, it’s much better now.”
Kuang Ning looked at the faint traces of herbs still on the other’s leg. “It really worked? What did he ask for in return?”
“He said he wanted animal fur. I gave him two baskets of Tou Tou Beast fur, and he even returned one to me. So, it only cost me one basket.” The companion then suggested, “You’ve been dealing with that problem on your hand for ages. Why not take this chance to let Doctor Jian Mo take a look?”
Kuang Ning hesitated briefly. “Alright, I’ll go see him.”
Dragging his partner along, Kuang Ning went to Jian Mo’s temporary cave residence.
The once quiet and empty cave was now packed with people, making it hard for Kuang Ning to even squeeze inside.
In one corner of the cave, Wu Jiong was busy changing dressings for someone.
When Kuang Ning finally made his way in, greeting his tribesmen along the way, he called out, “Chief Wu Jiong.”
Wu Jiong nodded at him. “Doctor Jian Mo is inside.”
Inside, Jian Mo was holding a wooden needle, pricking a young sub-beastman’s finger.
Jian Mo had experienced this technique in his childhood when his grandmother used it to treat indigestion. Recently, he had started using it again, testing it on several children with good results.
In addition to this technique, Jian Mo had been experimenting with other treatments, learning and adapting as he went. While not all of them were guaranteed to work, they weren’t harmful, so he was willing to try.
Using boiled, disposable wooden needles, Jian Mo held the young sub-beastman’s finger steady. The child wanted to pull away but didn’t dare, tears streaming down his cheeks.
Seeing Kuang Ning, the young sub-beastman glanced up before turning back to Jian Mo. “Doctor Jian Mo, could you please be gentler?”
Jian Mo spoke kindly, “Alright, but you have to be brave and not struggle, okay? I’ll be done soon.”
The child nodded vigorously. “Doctor Jian Mo, please hurry!”
Jian Mo quickly pricked the joints of the child’s palm, releasing fluid and a few darkened drops of blood. After squeezing the area a little more, he said, “There, all done. What a brave little one.”
The young sub-beastman sighed with relief, breaking into a big smile.
Jian Mo removed his gloves and rummaged through a basket, pulling out three digestive pills wrapped in dried leaves. “Take one tonight, then one each tomorrow morning and evening. That should help a lot. Stick to light meals for the next two days, avoid eating too much meat, and especially stay away from cured meats.”
The child’s father nodded repeatedly. “Thank you, Doctor Jian Mo.”
Jian Mo patted the young one on the head and put his gloves back on. “You’re welcome. You can head back now.”
With no one else waiting, Kuang Ning sat down across from Jian Mo. “Doctor Jian Mo.”
Jian Mo smiled, his eyes crinkling. “You’re back?”
Kuang Ning nodded and then remarked, “I’ve only been gone a few days, and the tribe has changed so much.”
Jian Mo replied, “It’s not too different. So, what’s bothering you? Let me take a look.”
Rolling up his sleeve, Kuang Ning revealed, “For the past two years, I’ve been getting these bumps. They itch when I scratch, but otherwise, they’re fine.”
Jian Mo inspected his arm, noticing small red bumps with tiny dots at their tips. The arm also bore scratch marks, lines running across the skin.
Skin bumps could be symptomatic of many underlying issues, but diagnosing the cause was a challenge in this world, lacking the advanced testing available on Earth.
After examining it closely, Jian Mo asked, “You said this started two years ago. You didn’t have this before?”
Kuang Ning nodded repeatedly. “That’s right. It all began suddenly during the summer two years ago. At first, it spread in patches, even on my face. Later, it was mostly on my body, with only occasional outbreaks on my face. But it never fully went away.”
This could be due to hormonal changes or dietary triggers.
Jian Mo considered this. “Did you happen to find a new food around that time?”
Kuang Ning immediately perked up. “Yes! We found soft-spiked fruit. Could it be the fruit? But everyone else eats it without any problems. I’m the only one who gets these bumps after eating it.”
Jian Mo explained, “Everyone reacts differently. You might be allergic to this fruit. Do you still eat it now?”
Kuang Ning looked slightly embarrassed. “The fruit’s husk is great for removing gaminess—it makes boiled meat taste really good.”
Jian Mo nodded. “Then it’s likely the fruit. Stop eating it for now and see how it goes.”
Kuang Ning asked hesitantly, “That’s it?”
Jian Mo smiled. “It’s worth a try. We’ll see how our luck holds.”
He then handed Kuang Ning a piece of soap wrapped in leaves. “In the meantime, if you bathe, use this. Wet it, rub it onto your skin, and scrub. Afterward, rinse thoroughly with clean water.”
Kuang Ning accepted it. “Alright, will do. Doctor Jian Mo, do I need to give you anything in return?”
Jian Mo looked up and smiled. “Just two small pieces of cured meat. That’ll do.”
Kuang Ning stood up eagerly. “I’ll get them for you right away!”
Jian Mo originally planned to stay in the Qin Hai Tribe for only one more day to treat people, but by the third day, he still hadn’t left.
In a tribe this large, people had all kinds of minor ailments.
Toothaches, skin conditions, chronic cold legs, insomnia, hair loss—while Jian Mo couldn’t solve most of these issues completely, he could alleviate some symptoms.
Despite the limitations, the Qin Hai Tribe was immensely grateful, treating him with utmost respect.
That afternoon, after finishing consultations, Jian Mo pulled Wu Jiong aside and approached Shu Guang, the chief of the Qin Hai Tribe, to inform him they were preparing to leave the next day since there were no more patients.
Over the past two days, Shu Guang had sought Jian Mo’s help with a massage to ease his back pain and was deeply thankful. He repeatedly offered to see them off the next day.
Jian Mo politely declined. “We’ll fly back on the winged beast, so there’s no need to escort us.”
Chirpy was thoroughly enjoying itself, feasting on food shared by the Qin Hai Tribe and playing daily with the tribe’s bear cubs. Its belly round and full, Chirpy seemed quite pleased with its carefree days.
Since the winged beast had learned to properly tuck in its claws and tail without hurting anyone, and the agile bear cubs were capable of dodging even if necessary, Jian Mo let them play after cautioning them to be careful.
By now, the two sides had developed a friendly rapport and were getting along quite well.
After checking on Chirpy, Jian Mo returned to their temporary cave and began organizing the supplies he had collected over the past few days.
Although he hadn’t asked much from each patient, the accumulated pile of materials had become substantial. Tomorrow’s journey home would be a challenge for poor Chirpy.
As Jian Mo and Wu Jiong were sorting through the items, someone called out from outside, “Doctor Jian Mo? Chief Wu Jiong?”
The voice sounded familiar, so Jian Mo responded directly, “We’re here. Come on in.”
It was Kuang Ning who entered, his face beaming with excitement. “Doctor Jian Mo! It turns out my bumps really were caused by the soft-spiked fruit. I haven’t eaten any of its shells these past two days, and not only have I stopped getting new bumps, but the old ones have almost disappeared!”
Jian Mo stood up. “That’s fantastic news. Let me take a look.”
Kuang Ning immediately rolled up his sleeve. “See? The bumps are much smaller now.”
Jian Mo observed Kuang Ning’s smoothened arm. The previous bumps had receded to a texture no worse than goosebumps, and the scratch marks had vanished, indicating the itching had subsided. Pleased, Jian Mo said, “It seems you are allergic to soft-spiked fruit. Try to avoid it in the future.”
“I definitely won’t eat it again!” Kuang Ning declared firmly. “These past two years have been miserable—always itchy and looking terrible.”
Jian Mo patted him gently on the shoulder in silent consolation.
After rolling down his sleeve, Kuang Ning fixed his bright eyes on Jian Mo and said, “Doctor Jian Mo, didn’t you come here to collect giant garlic leaves? I know how to get rid of most of their bitterness!”
Jian Mo looked at him in surprise.
Kuang Ning grinned. “You helped me solve this problem, and I don’t have much else to thank you with, So I thought I’d teach you this.”
Jian Mo asked, “Isn’t this your secret method?”
“It’s no problem, as long as you don’t share it with others,” Kuang Ning replied cheerfully. “Why don’t you and Chief Wu Jiong come to our cave, and I’ll teach you?”
Jian Mo hesitated briefly. He truly liked the aroma of giant garlic leaves, and this was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He agreed, “Alright, thank you.”
“No need to thank me! Come on, let’s go to our cave. I’ll also treat you to some grilled meat seasoned with giant garlic leaves,” Kuang Ning said enthusiastically.
Kuang Ning led Jian Mo and Wu Jiong to his cave.
Although Kuang Ning had been partnered with a beastman for years, they had no cubs yet and lived an easy-going life for two.
Their cave was large, clean, and very tidy.
As soon as Jian Mo entered, he noticed fabric decorations hanging on the cave walls, embroidered with various patterns. He couldn’t help but exclaim, “Your cave looks amazing!”
Kuang Ning immediately started taking down one of the pieces of fabric. “I’ll give this to you.”
Jian Mo quickly stopped him. “Oh no, that’s too much!”
“It’s fine,” Kuang Ning insisted. “We traded cured meat for these from another tribe. We’ll just get more next time. Besides, while hanging fabric may get smoky, it’s easy to wash. Better to have the smoke on the fabric than the cave walls—smoky walls are much harder to clean.”
Jian Mo admired his practical wisdom but still declined firmly. “That’s clever. But no need to give us any—I’ve got plenty of fabric back home. I’ll decorate once we’re back.”
Seeing Jian Mo’s insistence, Kuang Ning didn’t press the matter. Instead, he remarked with a smile, “I like to make the cave beautiful. When your home is lovely, you feel happier too.”
The conversation brought them closer, and Kuang Ning led them to the hearth to sit, then fetched some frozen meat from outside. “Some of our meat is cured and then frozen. It’s extra flavorful and delicious when grilled.”
Jian Mo gave him a thumbs-up. “I sometimes do that too.”
Kuang Ning beamed. “Right? You don’t even need to defrost it sometimes—just grill it straight. The meat juices stay in, and it turns out super tender.”
While Kuang Ning’s partner placed the meat on a stone slab to grill, Kuang Ning retrieved a pot and a bundle of frozen giant garlic roots.
Showing the roots to Jian Mo, he explained, “We wash and freeze the giant garlic roots beforehand. I prefer to prepare them right before use since the aroma is stronger that way. If you process them and then leave them for too long, the fragrance fades. I don’t know why.”
“That’s due to evaporation,” Jian Mo explained. “The aromatic compounds escape into the air after processing, essentially dissipating.”
Kuang Ning didn’t quite grasp the explanation but chuckled. “In any case, fresh is best. Getting rid of the bitterness is simple: just fry the roots in oil. Once they’re golden and crispy, strain them out—the bitterness stays in the oil, and the roots are ready to use.”
Jian Mo’s eyes lit up. “So that’s the trick!”
Kuang Ning added, “There’s one more tip: chop and rinse the roots before frying. If you skip this, the frying process brings out a different, unremovable bitterness.”
“Burning them would make them bitter too,” Jian Mo noted.
“Exactly!” Kuang Ning confirmed.
Preparing fried giant garlic roots wasn’t particularly technical—cleaning, chopping, and frying patiently in oil was all it took.
As they fried the roots, a rich, mouthwatering aroma of garlic and scallions filled the cave.
Watching the process, Kuang Ning remarked, “When the weather is warm, we fry outside. But in winter, we have to make do inside. Once we’re done, we just open the window to air out the smell.”
Like the He’an Tribe, their cave also had a window covered with a large wooden plank. Even when closed, it provided some ventilation.
When the roots were fried to perfection, Kuang Ning scooped them out and placed them in a stone mortar. Adding a pinch of coarse salt, he ground the still-hot roots into a fine powder. “Here, this is the garlic seasoning we use.”
Jian Mo took a pinch of the freshly made powder to taste and exclaimed, “This is incredible—it’s the flavor I’m familiar with!”
Kuang Ning grinned. “Right? You can even mix in other spices to make it better. When you dip grilled meat in it, the taste is unbeatable.”
Jian Mo gave him an admiring thumbs-up. “I’ve learned something new today.”
Yesss, you cam never have too much garlic <3
