After a long day of labor, Jian Mo took a relaxing hot shower, changed into a light, loose-fitting T-shirt and shorts, and tucked himself into a warm bed.
With a roll, he snuggled up against the belly of the giant wolf, habitually wrapping his arm around its front paw. Content and comforted by the steady warmth, he closed his eyes.
Blissful.
Just as Jian Mo was about to drift into sleep, he heard two excited howls outside: “Awooo—Awooo—”
It wasn’t unusual to hear someone calling out at night.
Adjusting his position while resting his head on the wolf’s paw, Jian Mo attempted to return to sleep.
But before he could nod off, the strange calls came again.
The repeated disruptions shattered Jian Mo’s drowsiness, no matter how tired he was. Irritated, he yanked the fur blanket over his head.
The wolf beside him gently patted his chest with its paw. “Don’t cover yourself so tightly—you might suffocate.”
Resigned, Jian Mo pulled the blanket down a bit. “Could it be Ban Ming and his crew making that noise? Why are they so excited so late at night?”
The wolf replied, “I’ll go check it out.”
Before Jian Mo could stop him, the wolf nimbly jumped off the loft and left quietly.
Jian Mo rolled into the spot the wolf had just vacated, staring at the ceiling as he waited for its return.
Soon, the wolf returned, bringing a chill with him. He lay back down beside Jian Mo and pulled him into his embrace. “Ban Ming and the others just received their knives. They’re thrilled.”
“Just now? Were they still working late into the night?” Jian Mo asked.
“They were too eager to wait,” the wolf replied.
“I figured as much!” Jian Mo sighed. “No wonder they were so noisy.”
The wolf reassured him, “I already told them to keep it down. Go to sleep.”
Jian Mo wriggled closer. “I can’t fall asleep now. Let’s chat for a bit.”
In the darkness, the wolf’s eyes glowed softly, focusing on Jian Mo. “What do you want to talk about?”
Jian Mo gazed back at the wolf, unafraid, finding his luminous eyes rather cool. His own eyes sparkled. “Tell me about the beastmen and sub-beastmen. Why did Ban Ming and Ban Jiu inherit Qing Kuo’s beast form instead of Di Ya’s? Is it because Qing Kuo’s beast form is stronger?”
The wolf explained, “In their pair, Qing Kuo is the stronger one. Among beast tribes, the White Wolf Clan has a natural advantage over the Lynx Clan.”
“I thought so!” Jian Mo exclaimed.
Their conversation shifted from the inheritance of beastmen traits to metallurgy.
In the past few days, the He’an Tribe had been forging metal tools, using up all the metal ingots. As their skills improved, they developed techniques like quenching, annealing, and tempering based on Jian Mo’s casual instructions. The resulting knives were becoming increasingly exceptional.
The tribe was eager to visit the Jintu Tribe to exchange for another batch of ore. However, the lack of pottery and glass to trade meant they would need to make a new batch before departing. It would take a few more days.
Jian Mo and the wolf chatted in the darkness for a long while before sleep finally overtook him. Snuggled against the warm wolf, he quickly fell into a deep slumber.
The next day, Jian Mo woke up with massive dark circles under his eyes. Wujiong, who had risen earlier, had already gone to cut grass for Chirpy.
After tidying up his house with a yawn, Jian Mo went to check on the fish traps. Although the traps didn’t always yield much, any catch helped supplement the household.
Upon stepping outside, Jian Mo ran into Ban Ming and his gang of young beastmen. Exhausted from the previous night’s noise, he felt groggy, and his steps faltered.
In contrast, the young beastmen were energetic, their faces radiant and spirits high, exuding an almost cocky vigor. When they noticed Jian Mo looking their way, they flashed bright smiles, revealing rows of gleaming white teeth that somehow made them look a little silly.
Jian Mo quickly looked away, heading toward the river. Yet, the group followed him, tagging along closely.
“Brother Jian Mo!” one of them called out.
“What is it?” Jian Mo yawned, his tone exasperated.
Ban Ming eagerly leaned closer. “Are you checking the fish traps? We’ll help you!”
Jian Mo pushed his head away. “Get to the point. Stop sucking up.”
Though Jian Mo’s words were new to them, the meaning was clear.
Ahu chimed in from the other side. “Brother Jian Mo, would you like to join us for a night hunt?”
“A night hunt?” Jian Mo lifted his gaze.
“Yeah,” Ban Ming said excitedly. “Sometimes, we go hunting at night. The prey is different from the daytime—pretty interesting.”
“And it’s a full moon tonight,” Ahu added. “The snow outside makes everything so bright, even sub-beastmen could hunt easily.”
Ban Ming nodded vigorously. “Exactly! And after the hunt, we can roast meat outside. Brother Jian Mo, bring some seasoning with you! Freshly roasted game is the best.”
Finally, their chatter woke Jian Mo fully. He asked, “Just us?”
Ban Ming grinned. “Not just us. It’ll be a big event. We’re inviting everyone. There’ll be a lot of people tonight.”
After some thought, Jian Mo agreed. “Alright. After dinner, right?”
Ban Ming corrected him, “No need for dinner. Once it gets dark, we’ll head out. With so many people, we’re bound to catch a lot. Eating beforehand will just make us too full.”
Intrigued, Jian Mo nodded. “Alright, we’ll gather in the clearing?”
Ahu cheered, “Yes, in the clearing. Oh, and Brother Jian Mo, can you inform the chief for us?”
So that’s why they were being so enthusiastic. Classic flattery with ulterior motives.
“Why don’t you tell him yourself?” Jian Mo asked lazily as the group trailed him to the river.
“The chief might not agree if we ask,” one muttered.
“Exactly,” another added. “But Brother Jian Mo, your words carry weight. If you say something, it’ll get done.”
“Brother Jian Mo, it’s such a rare opportunity! A full moon, our new knives—it’d be such a waste not to go hunting tonight!”
“And I want to bring Xi Lu along. Please help us convince him!”
The young beastmen praised Jian Mo endlessly during the walk, singing his virtues with such fervor it nearly made him blush.
When they reached the river, the group didn’t let Jian Mo lift a finger. They pulled up the fish traps and expertly cleaned the catch with their shell knives. Jian Mo noticed they kept their new metal knives untouched at their waists, likely cherishing them too much to use on fish.
Afterward, they carried the fish and escorted Jian Mo home, ensuring he had no choice but to take their help.
This group was so considerate and enthusiastic that Jian Mo felt obliged to help them out. Agreeing to speak on their behalf, he approached Wujiong. As expected, Wujiong didn’t object. Instead, he remarked that it had been a long time since the tribe had gone on a night hunt and suggested they celebrate their new metal knives with this outing.
Thus, what started as a plan by the young beastmen turned into a collective event for the entire tribe.
The young beastmen didn’t mind the shift. As long as they got to go out at night, they were content.
As soon as dusk fell, they went door to door, urging everyone to gather quickly for departure. It was clear that their excitement was boundless.
Everyone else in the tribe seemed eager too. Without much prompting, they gathered in the clearing, ready to set off.
A significant portion of the He’an Tribe joined the hunt, making the group seem grand and imposing. Qing Kuo and Di Ya counted the participants and then reported back to Wujiong, signaling the start of the journey.
Jian Mo perched on Wujiong’s back, turning his head to take in the surroundings.
The moon had risen, casting its silvery glow over the land as if draping it in frost.
In the distance, the forest loomed dark and shadowy, its trees clawing at the horizon like silent phantoms. Snow atop the mountain peaks shimmered like silver, lending a dreamlike quality to the scene.
The night felt entirely different from the day.
Jian Mo shifted his gaze to the group around him. Beastmen carried sub-beastmen on their backs, running across the plains. Their chatter and laughter, mixed with the rhythmic thuds of their footsteps, disrupted the magical stillness of the night.
Watching them, Jian Mo couldn’t help but lean down to whisper into Wujiong’s ear. “With all this noise, won’t the prey be scared off?”
Wujiong’s thick, soft ears twitched before he turned his head slightly and replied in a low voice, “We’re not at the hunting grounds yet. It’s fine.”
“But won’t the prey hear us from afar?”
“That’s the point,” Wujiong explained. “The noise will scare them, causing them to flee together. That makes it easier for us to hunt.”
Understanding dawned on Jian Mo, who nodded and murmured, “Got it.” However, his eyes remained fixed on Wujiong’s ears.
When they moved, their softness and thickness were especially apparent, and the long fur at the tips swayed invitingly. Jian Mo felt an almost irresistible urge to touch them.
Unable to resist any longer, he politely asked, “Wujiong, can I touch your ears?”
Wujiong agreed.
Jian Mo reached out with both hands, gently stroking the wolf’s ears, his satisfaction evident. They weren’t quite what he had expected. While he’d imagined them to be soft and cool, they were warm and springy. Pressing them down caused them to bounce back immediately.
These ears were far better to touch than those of a Samoyed.
After indulging himself for a moment longer, Jian Mo withdrew his hands with great restraint, his eyes sparkling as he turned his attention forward.
So soft. So cute.
Satisfied.
The beastmen’s pace was astonishingly fast, and before long, they reached an unfamiliar plain.
Under the moonlit sky, the vast expanse seemed endless, devoid of visible prey. Jian Mo widened his eyes, scanning his surroundings for any trace of animals. Despite his efforts, his eyes grew sore, and he still saw nothing.
Ahead, Wujiong let out a long howl. In response, the beastmen split into two groups, charging into the plain from either side.
In their beast forms, they thundered across the ground, creating a cacophony of heavy stomps. The noise was so tremendous that it felt as though an army was traversing the land.
As their steps grew more synchronized, the sound became like rolling thunder, pounding against the earth. The oppressive rhythm struck fear into both hearts and instincts, unsettling even the most composed.
Jian Mo clung tightly to Wujiong’s neck, his wide eyes fixed on the scene ahead.
The synchronized stomping resembled drumbeats. Or rather, the beastmen’s steps were drumsticks, and the earth beneath them was a giant drum. Each beat sent vibrations through the ground, echoing across the plain.
The noise disturbed every living creature. Animals poked their heads out from burrows, alarmed, while those resting on the plains fled in panic. Birds burst from their nests, flapping frantically into the sky.
The noise acted like an invisible rope, herding the prey together.
Under the moonlight, the stampeding animals formed a torrent of movement, while the beastmen at the edges were like waves enclosing the flood. The waves pushed inward, shrinking the prey’s range of motion until they were fully encircled.
In the bright moonlight, Jian Mo watched as the sub-beastmen tightened their posture, their bodies crouched like gallant knights atop their beastmen mounts. Their expressions were solemn, their gazes sharp.
The atmosphere was taut as the beastmen surged forward, pinning down their selected prey with claws and teeth. Startled into silence, the prey didn’t even have time to cry out before succumbing to their captors.
The hunt concluded.
The silence gave way to excited chatter and noise once again.
Jian Mo, perched atop Wujiong, finally relaxed, his tense muscles aching as he let out a long breath.
It had been spectacular.
Like watching a breathtaking performance.
The beastmen, now carrying their hefty prizes, continued onward until they reached the riverbank, where they deposited the prey onto the ground.
In his feline beast form, Ban Ming called out, “That’s enough! We’ve got plenty of game. No need to hunt more. Let’s shift back and start roasting! Meow!”
Everyone reverted to human form, donning robes and boots before gathering by the river.
Sub-beastmen carried bundles of firewood to the center and started a fire with flint.
The orange flames licked at the wood, dancing on the plains like a banner.
Only then did Jian Mo realize he’d been so focused on the hunt that he hadn’t noticed when everyone had already collected firewood.
Without needing instructions, the group naturally divided tasks. Some fed wood into the fire, others piled stones to build a hearth, and a few dragged their game to the river for processing.
Those working on the game wore particularly serious expressions. With sharp metal knives, they cut through the hides with ease—like a hot blade through lard—quickly reducing the meat to manageable chunks.
The efficiency of the new metal tools amazed everyone. Compared to their old ones, these knives were a revelation.
Watching their tools at work, the beastmen’s faces lit up with satisfaction and excitement.
The fresh meat was skewered onto branches and set to roast over the flames.
While the meat was cooking, the group sat around the massive bonfire. Someone started to howl a song.
It was the first time Jian Mo had heard them sing. The voices were robust and powerful. Though the melodies were simple and unadorned, they were moving, perfectly harmonizing with the wild backdrop.
One by one, people stood up to dance, stomping joyfully in time with the music.
It was all so unexpected.
Jian Mo watched, wide-eyed, then picked up a piece of wood and began tapping it rhythmically against another.
The beats joined the singing, adding a drum-like tempo.
As if inspired, one of the singers started following Jian Mo’s rhythm, and the group’s voices swelled even louder. They danced and sang, circling the bonfire.
When the top layer of meat was cooked, it was sliced off with their new knives, sprinkled with salt, and eaten in hearty bites.
The rich, juicy meat, eaten so unreservedly, filled their stomachs and hearts with warmth and joy.
The singing and dancing became even more spirited—a true celebration.
Jian Mo continued drumming on the wood, occasionally taking bites of meat that Wujiong handed him.
He didn’t even bother to use his hands, simply leaning down to grab the cooked meat with his mouth. Wujiong always passed it at the perfect temperature, salted just right, and in manageable portions.
When Jian Mo finally grew tired of drumming, he sat quietly by the fire, knees drawn up, resting his face on one hand as he observed the scene.
Despite not drinking a drop of alcohol, he felt slightly intoxicated, as if caught in a dream.
He watched the dancers while Wujiong watched him.
When Jian Mo turned his head, he unexpectedly met Wujiong’s gaze. He had no idea how long Wujiong had been watching him.
Their eyes locked, and Wujiong leaned closer.
For a moment, Jian Mo thought Wujiong was going to kiss him. His eyes widened, his breath hitched, and his hands clenched into fists on his lap.
But Wujiong only pressed his forehead gently against Jian Mo’s, nuzzling affectionately before pulling back slightly.
Jian Mo froze for a moment. When he recalled the whirlwind of thoughts he’d just had, he couldn’t help silently berating himself. His mind had been wandering all evening, conjuring absurd scenarios.
It had to be because he’d seen beastmen and sub-beastmen kissing earlier. It had muddled his brain, leading to such ridiculous ideas.
Wujiong, still close, watched him intently.
Realizing he’d spaced out again, Jian Mo felt even more embarrassed.
Wujiong chuckled and suddenly pressed his hand against the back of Jian Mo’s neck.
Though they’d shared casual touches many times before, this was the first time Jian Mo noticed how warm Wujiong’s palm was—as if it could draw sweat from his neck.
Feeling awkward, Jian Mo wriggled slightly, worried someone might notice.
But no one was paying attention to them. Those with partners were already kissing passionately, while the rest continued their singing and dancing.
Only Jian Mo knew that in that moment, as he stared at Wujiong, his heartbeat pounded like thunder.
Something was amiss.
Jian Mo clenched his fists, thinking, It seems I’ve lost control of this situation.
And here I am, screaming, “Just kiss already!”
