As Jian Mo and Wu Jiong came downstairs, they saw a group of people approaching in the distance.
Leading the group were two particularly tall individuals with exceptionally fair skin. They wore fur robes styled like Grecian togas, cinched with belts that accentuated their height and long legs, giving them the appearance of models.
The people of the He’an Tribe didn’t usually dress so elaborately.
At a glance, Jian Mo could tell these two were from the Mengshui Tribe.
As they came closer, Jian Mo recognized the man at the front—it was indeed Yun Long, the chief of the Mengshui Tribe.
Although Jian Mo didn’t have a direct connection with Yun Long, they had crossed paths during a hunting festival, so he knew who he was.
Jian Mo and Wu Jiong stopped in front of their home, waiting for the visitors to approach.
Yun Long’s group soon reached them and began eyeing Wu Jiong’s house.
Beneath the blue sky and white clouds, the stone house stood out prominently with its glass-paned windows, catching everyone’s attention.
Yun Long smiled, revealing a set of neat, white teeth. “Wu Jiong, how are you? Your home has become quite the sight. Doctor Jian Mo, long time no see.”
Jian Mo nodded. “Chief Yun Long.”
Wu Jiong invited, “Not bad. Come in and have a seat.”
Yun Long chuckled. “Let me take a good look first. I’ve never seen windows like these before—they’re amazing.”
Wu Jiong raised an eyebrow. “Want to take a walk around the house?”
“If you don’t mind, I won’t stand on ceremony,” Yun Long replied with a grin.
“Nothing to mind,” Wu Jiong said, leading them around the side of the house.
Jian Mo had been in this world for a while and had made countless modifications to the house.
Living here daily, they didn’t notice how much the place had changed.
But for Yun Long and his group, who hadn’t seen the house in a long time, the transformation of the nearly century-old structure was startling.
The front yard was noticeably tidier, the side of the house was planted with greenery, and the back had been enhanced significantly.
One corner housed a beast pen with a few Tou Tou beasts, while another featured a wooden frame covered with stretched hides, forming a small bathing hut.
Further back, Chirpy was resting under a tree.
Noticing the visitors, Chirpy opened one eye lazily before shutting it again and continuing to nap.
Behind Chirpy were rows of plants. Likely due to Chirpy’s presence, the snow had been swept away, revealing bare stems.
Even on the mountainside, there were cultivated plants. With neatly arranged rows and freshly turned soil, it was evident to Yun Long and his group that these were deliberately planted.
Walking alongside them, Jian Mo noticed their surprised expressions and belatedly realized just how different Wu Jiong’s house had become.
Compared to other homes in the tribe, Wu Jiong’s property—with its penned animals and vegetable patches—felt entirely unlike a beastman’s house.
It had a strong rustic charm.
Yun Long pointed to a drainage ditch behind the house. “You’ve done an excellent job keeping this place so tidy, even digging a trench. Where does it drain to?”
“The river,” Wu Jiong replied.
Yun Long inspected the ditch and clicked his tongue appreciatively. “You even lined it with stones. It’s so refined.”
After the tour, Wu Jiong invited the group inside and led them to a corner of the house.
In the corner by the window stood a small wooden table flanked by fur cushions.
This was another change brought by Jian Mo.
Originally, Wu Jiong’s home had been mostly bare, aside from the fire pit and wooden shelves.
Not being used to sitting by the fire pit all the time, Jian Mo had described a small table to Wu Jiong, who crafted one during his free time. Jian Mo then added fur cushions to make it cozy, creating a space where they could sit, drink tea, and chat.
Today, Wu Jiong gestured for Yun Long and his group to sit there. Yun Long looked at the small table with interest, inspecting it thoroughly before turning to Jian Mo. “Doctor Jian Mo, is this something you brought over from your old tribe?”
Jian Mo nodded.
Yun Long seemed about to say more when Wu Jiong interrupted him. “Yun Long, what’s the purpose of your visit this time?”
Yun Long smiled. “I realized it’s been a long time since I last visited your tribe, so I came to see you. By the way, I brought something for you.”
He reached into the basket he was carrying and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped package made of leaves, handing it to Jian Mo. “Doctor Jian Mo, didn’t you mention something about anesthetics before? We found something similar. Take a look and see if it’s useful.”
Anesthetic? Jian Mo’s fingers twitched slightly before reaching for the package. “A substance similar to an anesthetic?”
Yun Long nodded. “Yes, when either a person or a beast ingests this, they fall into a deep sleep and can’t be woken up until half a day or a full day has passed. I thought it might be like the anesthetics you described.”
In the past, Jian Mo had been invited to the Mengshui Tribe to serve as a visiting doctor for a few days during the hunting festival.
During his downtime, he had indeed shared various medical insights with the tribe, including information about anesthetics.
Hearing Yun Long’s description, this substance did seem very similar to an anesthetic.
Jian Mo opened the small package, revealing a bundle of dry, black, crushed material. It was so fragmented that he couldn’t determine its original form.
He carefully fanned the air and sniffed it, picking up a bittersweet scent with a hint of freshness.
This anesthetic seemed to be plant-based.
Looking up, Jian Mo asked, “When someone uses this, do they feel unwell after waking up?”
Yun Long replied, “Those who’ve used it mentioned feeling groggy, like after drinking too much fruit wine. But they recovered after one or two days, and there didn’t seem to be any serious side effects.”
That sounded like a decent anesthetic.
Jian Mo carefully rewrapped the bundle and asked, “How should I repay you for this?”
Yun Long laughed heartily. “No need for repayment! There isn’t much of it anyway. We brought it because we thought you could use it. Just take it.”
Unsure whether to accept it, Jian Mo turned to Wu Jiong for guidance.
Wu Jiong gave him a slight nod.
Only then did Jian Mo express his thanks and take the package.
Yun Long, seated across from them, had been observing their interaction closely. Smiling, he said, “We’ll keep an eye out during our hunts and gatherings. If we find more of this anesthetic, we’ll bring it to you.”
Jian Mo responded, “That’s too much trouble for you.”
Yun Long waved it off. “It’s no trouble. If you feel bad about it, you can come to our tribe to pick it up. Many of our sub-beastmen say they miss you and want to learn more about cooking from you.”
Jian Mo hadn’t interacted much with Yun Long before, and this was their first proper conversation. He was surprised to find the Mengshui Tribe’s chief was exceptionally talkative and had a hearty laugh.
During their chat, Yun Long lavishly praised Jian Mo, marveling at his pottery-making skills and calling it extraordinary.
He even remarked that if Jian Mo were part of the Mengshui Tribe, he’d laugh himself awake every night dreaming about it.
Even though Jian Mo wasn’t particularly skilled at reading between the lines, he couldn’t miss Yun Long’s thinly veiled attempts at recruitment.
Wu Jiong, however, stood by with a stern face, frequently cutting Yun Long off with rebuttals.
Yun Long remained unfazed, keeping his smile intact as though completely immune to Wu Jiong’s cold demeanor.
The group drank tea for a while. By midday, with the sun beginning to set westward, Yun Long and his people prepared to leave.
Jian Mo and Wu Jiong walked them to the edge of the settlement.
Not wanting to owe the Mengshui Tribe a favor, Jian Mo insisted on giving them a pair of glazed jars as a return gift.
Though Yun Long initially declined, Jian Mo’s persistence won out. Yun Long eventually accepted, smiling as he encouraged Jian Mo to visit the Mengshui Tribe sometime.
“If you think the journey’s too difficult, we can send someone to escort you,” Yun Long added.
Wu Jiong’s expression grew colder at that. He told Jian Mo to stay behind, taking it upon himself to see Yun Long and his group out of the tribe.
Jian Mo agreed. It was too chilly to wander any farther, and he didn’t mind stopping here.
As Wu Jiong and the others disappeared from view, Qing Kuo approached Jian Mo and said, “Don’t be fooled by Yun Long’s polished appearance. His beast form is a giant armored beast, with thick scales, curved tusks, and a belly that nearly drags on the ground.”
Jian Mo blinked, confused.
He knew Yun Long’s beast form was a giant armored beast and had seen one before. The contrast between Yun Long’s beast and human forms was striking, but he didn’t see why Qing Kuo was bringing it up. “What about it?”
Qing Kuo sighed, patting Jian Mo on the shoulder. “Nothing.”
He glanced briefly at Yun Long’s departing figure and muttered under his breath, lamenting Yun Long’s flashy demeanor and choice of handsome beastmen companions. Then he walked off.
Jian Mo was left baffled. “Why the strange look?”
Turning, he saw Ye Luo standing nearby.
Ye Luo smiled and tapped his forehead. “Still don’t get it.”
Jian Mo was even more confused. “Get what?”
“Never mind,” Ye Luo replied. “By the way, can you show me the anesthetic Yun Long gave you?”
Ye Luo and Qing Kuo had been present during the tea session but hadn’t said much.
Since Jian Mo was friendly with Ye Luo, he agreed readily. “It’s in the house. I’ll grab it for you.”
Ye Luo followed him inside. “I might know what it’s made from.”
“Really?!” Jian Mo’s excitement surged.
If Ye Luo recognized it, that would make things much easier!
He quickly retrieved the package. “Here, take a look!”
Ye Luo didn’t hold back, unwrapping the package and inspecting the dry, black herbs. He rubbed them between his fingers and sniffed carefully.
His expression grew serious. After a moment, he picked a thin sliver, placing it on his tongue for a taste.
Alarmed, Jian Mo quickly poured him a glass of water. “Be careful! Don’t let it knock you out.”
Ye Luo rinsed his mouth and reassured him. “It’s fine. I know what I’m doing.”
After careful examination, Ye Luo finally said, “This seems to be a type of moss. I can detect its faint, distinct flavor. It’s quite unique, though I’m not entirely certain.”
Jian Mo immediately asked, “What season does this moss grow? We could gather some to compare.”
“It should be around this time,” Ye Luo replied. “I remember seeing similar moss on the rocks of Leigong Pond during the autumn. I’m not sure if it’s still there now.”
Wu Jiong returned from escorting Yun Long just in time to catch this. “Leigong Pond on Mount Leigong?”
Ye Luo nodded. “Yes.”
Jian Mo looked between the two. “You both know exactly where it is?”
“I hadn’t paid much attention before,” Wu Jiong said. “But Ye Luo’s mention reminded me.”
Ye Luo added, “The water at Leigong Pond is different from other places. It stays warm, even in winter, and gives off mist. The rocks around it are covered in moss, and this anesthetic moss seems to be one of them. I’ve gathered moss from there before for food and noticed a similar smell, though I never tasted it.”
Wu Jiong nodded. “Let’s check it out.”
“Tomorrow,” Ye Luo suggested. “I’ll guide you.”
Jian Mo agreed eagerly. “Great! Is Leigong Pond far?”
Ye Luo smiled. “About the same distance as the trip to the Upper South Canyon, but in the opposite direction.”
“Then we’ll need to leave early,” Jian Mo said. “I’ll prepare some food for us to take. We can eat lunch on the way.”
“Sounds good. See you tomorrow,” Ye Luo replied.
Thank you for the update!!!
Thanks for the chapter! Doc lives in clueless land, lol. Poor ML needs a lot of patience.
Hmm although he hasn’t done anything, I’m very suspicious of that Yung Luo guy. Especially his attitude, that type of attitude come from cunning villains and i don’t like it. Also, as always our mc is so oblivious lol
