Jian Mo and Wu Jiong crouched amidst the flowers, patiently watching the honey sparrow ahead of them.
The honey sparrow hadn’t noticed them. It flitted leisurely among the blooms, occasionally dipping its long beak into a powdered tube flower to drink the thick nectar inside.
It moved from flower to flower and didn’t seem to be in any hurry to leave.
After observing it for a while, Jian Mo realized the honey sparrow wasn’t as small as he’d imagined.
Though it was called a sparrow, this honey sparrow was as big as a pigeon.
He guessed that the beastmen’s large animal forms made the bird seem much smaller in comparison, leading to its name.
Jian Mo whispered, “Should we follow the honey sparrow back to its nest?”
Wu Jiong nodded. “Yes. Honey blocks are valuable. Let’s see if we can get some.”
Jian Mo glanced around, scanning the surroundings.
Wu Jiong gently pressed a hand on Jian Mo’s shoulder. “What are you looking for?”
Jian Mo lowered his voice. “Seeing if there are any other honey sparrows around.”
Wu Jiong replied, “There aren’t. It’s just this one. Maybe it only recently discovered this patch of powdered tube flowers.”
Jian Mo asked, “Should we follow it later? There’s only one. Can we keep up?”
Wu Jiong nodded again. “It shouldn’t be a problem.”
Jian Mo gazed at Wu Jiong with envy.
The beastmen and sub-beastmen truly had exceptional eyesight. If it were up to him, tracking just one honey sparrow would’ve been a lot harder.
Blissfully unaware it was being watched, the honey sparrow lazily filled its belly with nectar before flapping its wings and flying off into the distance.
Once it was far enough that Jian Mo could only see a tiny black dot, Wu Jiong finally signaled him to climb onto the winged beast’s back. Guiding the beast, Wu Jiong directed it to quietly follow the honey sparrow from afar.
Normally, the winged beast flew recklessly, charging about with wild abandon. But today, under Wu Jiong’s firm control, it flew silently and steadily, maintaining just the right distance. It neither startled the honey sparrow nor lost sight of it.
Jian Mo hadn’t expected the winged beast to be this obedient and efficient, leaving him momentarily amazed.
The honey sparrow kept climbing higher into the sky, like a small balloon ascending into the heavens.
The winged beast followed, climbing steadily higher as well.
The higher they went, the colder it got, and the air grew thinner. The winged beast began to breathe heavily, its sides heaving.
Wu Jiong, seated behind Jian Mo, kept a protective hold on him, monitoring his condition. “You okay?”
Jian Mo felt a slight discomfort in his chest but managed a steady response. “I’m fine. Where do you think the honey sparrow is headed?”
Wu Jiong kept his eyes fixed on the bird. “Not sure. We rarely get to see honey sparrows’ nests.”
Fortunately, the honey sparrow stopped climbing at a certain altitude and began flying straight ahead.
Jian Mo noticed the snowy mountains rising on the horizon and had a sudden realization. “Could it be heading for the mountains?”
Wu Jiong observed carefully. “It’s possible.”
The honey sparrow showed surprising stamina, leading them on a prolonged flight. It wasn’t until almost noon that the little bird finally descended toward one of the vast chain of snow-capped peaks.
From the sky, Jian Mo looked down.
The upper slopes of the mountains were nearly barren, dotted sparsely with withered brambles.
Here and there, long-haired bovine creatures grazed leisurely on patches of grass.
These animals seemed completely at ease, likely because beastmen rarely ventured this high to hunt, leaving them unthreatened.
As they flew further, Jian Mo suddenly noticed small brown patches dotting the cliffside.
He squinted and couldn’t help but exclaim softly, “Nests! I think I see the honey sparrows’ nests.”
Wu Jiong nodded. “I see them too.”
Jian Mo added, “There are so many!”
On the steep cliffs of the snowy mountains, countless bird nests clung tightly to the rocks. At a glance, there had to be hundreds—maybe even close to a thousand.
Had they not flown closer, it would have been unimaginable that such a large colony of honey sparrows could inhabit the desolate, shadowy face of the mountain.
These tiny creatures, sustained by flowers, had made their homes in one of the most inhospitable places imaginable.
As the honey sparrow ahead of them returned to its nest, Jian Mo and Wu Jiong could now hear the soft, melodious chirping of countless birds.
The honey sparrows were calling.
Jian Mo marveled at the sight. “I didn’t expect them to build nests in a place like this.”
Wu Jiong explained, “It’s high up, out of reach for most other birds, and insects can’t survive in this environment.”
Jian Mo nodded as understanding dawned. “Right! Honey is irresistible to insects. If they built their nests in warmer areas, they’d be constantly harassed by them.”
Indeed, every species has its survival wisdom.
But if honey sparrows weren’t sustained by the energy-rich nectar they fed on, they probably wouldn’t have the strength to make it to such heights.
Survival of the fittest was a universal truth.
Wu Jiong guided the winged beast to land on a flat clearing, helping Jian Mo dismount. He looked the beast in the eyes and commanded, “Wait here for us.”
The winged beast crouched down like a brooding hen, tucking its claws underneath its body, and softly chirped: “Chirp chirp.”
It seemed to understand.
Wu Jiong slung a basket onto his back and held Jian Mo’s hand. “Let’s go.”
The wind at this altitude was strong, and much of the snow had been blown away, leaving only a thin layer.
As Jian Mo stepped down, his feet met the hard, slick rock beneath the snow.
The rocky surface was slippery, and loose stones wobbled precariously underfoot. It was easy to twist an ankle if one wasn’t careful. Thankfully, Wu Jiong held Jian Mo’s hand firmly, ensuring he stayed safe along the treacherous path.
Breathing lightly, Jian Mo remarked, “The conditions here are so harsh. No wonder the animals living here don’t need to be on guard.”
Wu Jiong glanced back at him. “We should come back up here when we have time.”
After walking a while longer, they reached the honey sparrows’ nesting area.
The sparrows noticed their arrival and swarmed them like raindrops, pecking aggressively at them. “Chirp! Chirp!”
Jian Mo raised his arms to protect his face but couldn’t avoid getting pecked on the back of his head and shoulders, making for a comically disheveled sight.
Wu Jiong shielded Jian Mo and let out a fierce howl at the honey sparrows.
The wolf’s roar echoed through the mountains, momentarily startling the honey sparrows mid-air. But instead of retreating, they redoubled their attacks with even greater ferocity: “Chirp!!!”
Wu Jiong stepped in front of Jian Mo, then suddenly shifted into his giant wolf form. Raising a massive paw, he swiped at the air with a booming growl: “ROAR—”
The sheer force of his roar created a visible shockwave, scattering several honey sparrows mid-flight. Terrified, they flapped their wings and fled upward in panic.
In the blink of an eye, the swarming honey sparrows vanished completely, leaving not a single one behind.
Jian Mo, crouched under the wolf’s belly, stared wide-eyed at the scene.
The honey sparrows had retreated decisively. These tiny creatures didn’t hesitate to abandon their nests once threatened, and none dared to return.
The giant wolf turned its head, grabbed Jian Mo by the back of his coat, and gently tossed him onto its back. “Let’s go take a look.”
Jian Mo clung tightly to the wolf. “Alright.”
The giant wolf began sprinting along the mountainside.
Despite the altitude and thin air, it seemed unaffected by the harsh conditions.
Jian Mo glanced back, seeing the long-haired bovine creatures grazing near the mountaintop reduced to tiny black dots.
It seemed clear now—if wolves wanted to hunt in these heights, it wouldn’t be a challenge for them.
They soon reached the cliff edge.
The honey sparrows had built their nests here on this barren mountainside.
From a distance, the nests didn’t seem overwhelming. But up close, Jian Mo realized the sheer density of the nests was staggering, making his scalp tingle.
The varying colors of the nests suggested that honey sparrows had been building here for generations. Some nests were clean and new, a pale white, while others had darkened and were partially eroded by time and the elements.
Many nests had been abandoned, left as remnants of honey sparrows that had never returned.
The giant wolf stopped at the cliff’s edge and lowered Jian Mo gently to the ground. Then, it shifted back into human form. Donning his fur robe, Wu Jiong said, “Let’s start collecting honey.”
Jian Mo nodded enthusiastically. “Let’s do it!”
Wu Jiong led Jian Mo to the nearest nest.
The honey sparrows’ nests resembled swallows’ nests, with semicircular structures made of clustered materials adhered to the cliff walls.
Inside the nests were layers of dried grass, and atop the grass were glistening, pale yellow sugar blocks.
These were the honey sparrows’ carefully crafted stores of nectar, meant to be consumed slowly or fed to their chicks.
Standing beside the nest, Jian Mo could smell the light, sweet fragrance of the sugar blocks.
It was utterly tantalizing.
To Jian Mo, these shimmering sugar blocks were far more enticing than yellow gemstones.
Wu Jiong rummaged through the nest, selecting four sugar blocks from the thirteen inside. “We’ll take a portion from each nest and leave the rest for them. Let’s not empty them out.”
Jian Mo nodded. “Will they come back?”
Wu Jiong replied, “Yes. Building a nest is no easy task. As long as the nests remain intact, they’ll return.”
That reassured Jian Mo.
They moved from one nest to another, collecting about a third of the sugar blocks from each.
The cold temperature in the area kept the sugar blocks rock-hard.
Placing the blocks in their basket, they quickly accumulated nearly half a basketful.
Jian Mo sniffled, nearly on the verge of catching a cold from the freezing environment, but his heart was brimming with joy.
These were sugar blocks!
After all the effort he’d gone through to extract even a small amount of syrup, discovering such concentrated sugar was like a dream come true.
What a treasure!
As they continued collecting, they came across an abandoned nest.
Jian Mo narrowed his eyes. “This nest…”
Wu Jiong inspected it as well. “It looks like it’s made of honey blocks.”
Jian Mo exclaimed, “Right? That’s what I thought too!”
He reached out, gently tapping the nest and scratching its surface with his nail. “It really is made of honey blocks!”
Wu Jiong confirmed after a closer look. “It is.”
Jian Mo’s jaw dropped. He turned to glance at the mountain dotted with abandoned nests. “Oh my goodness, this changes everything! What a haul!”
Honey blocks!
Such highly concentrated sugar didn’t have a shelf life. It could last not just a hundred or a thousand years but possibly millions without spoiling.
Jian Mo was so thrilled he felt he might sweat despite the cold. “It really is honey! Why don’t they reuse these abandoned nests? Or eat them? Such a waste of a good nest!”
Wu Jiong replied, “Not sure, but these nests must be incredibly tough.”
Jian Mo tilted his head. “What do you mean?”
Wu Jiong suggested, “Try breaking one.”
Unsure of what to expect, Jian Mo tried lightly pulling at the nest. It didn’t budge.
He applied more force. Still, nothing.
Finally, Jian Mo used all his strength, gripping the nest and yanking with all his might. The nest remained stubbornly adhered to the rock, as though it were a part of the cliff itself.
By the time Jian Mo’s hands turned red from the effort, the nest hadn’t moved an inch. Panting, he exclaimed, “Why is it so hard to pull off?!”
Wu Jiong explained, “Probably to prevent strong winds from blowing them away. These nests are made to stick. Let me try.”
Jian Mo stepped aside as Wu Jiong took over.
Even Wu Jiong had to exert his full strength to pry the nest free.
Once the dried grass inside was removed, the entire nest was revealed to be a gleaming, solid honey block. It was stunning.
Jian Mo stared at the nest, his eyes shining as brightly as the honey.
With this discovery, they began pulling down every abandoned nest they could find.
They left the occupied nests untouched, only taking the deserted ones.
Even so, the yield was incredibly satisfying.
After getting the hang of it, Jian Mo managed to pry off a few nests himself.
One, two, three… By the time they finished that afternoon, Jian Mo had pulled down sixty-nine nests on his own, while Wu Jiong’s haul was at least three times that.
Feeling the chill seep into his bones, Jian Mo turned to Wu Jiong. “Let’s head back, or maybe find a place sheltered from the wind to rest. Any more of this, and I’ll definitely catch a cold.”
Wu Jiong nodded. “Let’s go find Chirpy first.”
Carrying the basket, Wu Jiong led Jian Mo back the way they came.
Before long, they found the winged beast waiting for them.
The beast perked up as they approached, its eyes lighting up as it chirped twice: “Chirp chirp!”
Jian Mo spread his arms wide and hugged the winged beast.
The beast shifted slightly, standing up just enough before crouching back down like a mother hen sheltering her chicks, this time covering Jian Mo and Wu Jiong beneath its warm body.
The winged beast’s body heat was remarkably high, enveloping Jian Mo like a giant hot water bottle. He immediately felt warm and cozy.
Content, Jian Mo closed his eyes in bliss. Then, reaching into the basket, he pulled out a sugar block, feeding one to the winged beast, another to Wu Jiong, and keeping one for himself. “Quick, try it—mmm!”
The rich, sweet flavor exploded in Jian Mo’s mouth, overwhelming his taste buds. For a moment, he was at a loss for words.
This honey block was incredible!
So delicious, it made him want to swear.
What a haul, @_@
My mouth will be instantly be filled with honey if I ever gathered that many honey. I won’t even stop eating until my stomach ache LOL
