Chapter 207: Extra (7)

Jian Mo and Wu Jiong rode on their giant wolves for a brief run around the area, eventually making their way up the mountain for a better view.

Night had fallen, and the moonlight bathed the earth, casting a serene glow over everything.

In the distance, the twinkling lights of a small town mirrored the stars above, creating a picturesque scene.

Holding the small, white wolf in his arms, Jian Mo looked out at the town ahead. “No electricity—the lights are oil lamps.” Wu Jiong, stroking the back of the small gray cat in his arms, added casually, “Not as advanced as the world we visited before.” Jian Mo nodded. “I think so too. But maybe it’s because the civilizations here and there aren’t the same, so it’s not really fair to compare them.” Wu Jiong agreed, “That’s possible.”

Neither of them descended the mountain for a closer look. Instead, they chose to stay and observe from above.

By the latter half of the night, dew began to form. Wu Jiong instructed the white wolf to enlarge its form, and then the two of them climbed onto its back to rest.

Jian Mo held the small gray cat in his arms while Wu Jiong held Jian Mo. The two of them slept atop the giant wolf, which curled up with its head tucked in, its eyes vigilantly watching over them.

Jian Mo reached out and petted the furry wolf ears in front of him, unable to resist. He turned to Wu Jiong and said, “This feels like a dream.” Wu Jiong raised a brow. “Sleeping on my spirit beast feels like a dream?”

Jian Mo shook his head. “No, I mean the whole experience feels like a dream. We have a story called ‘A Dream of Noodle Porridge.’ Sometimes, I wonder if my life might just be a dream.”

“What’s the story about?” Wu Jiong asked.

Jian Mo recounted the tale in a way Wu Jiong could easily understand—a story about someone who dreamt they became powerful and had a wonderful companion, only to wake up and realize it was all just a dream.

After listening carefully, Wu Jiong pondered for a moment. “Didn’t you say people can’t dream about things they haven’t experienced before?”

“That’s what people say. Hmm…” Jian Mo trailed off as Wu Jiong leaned in and kissed him.

Their lips met, and a tingling sensation swept over Jian Mo. His breath hitched, and he instinctively tightened his grip on Wu Jiong’s hand.

After a while, Wu Jiong whispered, “See? This isn’t something you could dream up on your own.” Jian Mo took a deep breath. “You’ve got a point.”

Wu Jiong was his first love. Other than him, he had never been this intimate with anyone, so it seemed unlikely he would dream up such vivid details.

Jian Mo smiled and was about to say something more when he noticed that the small gray cat and the giant wolf were watching them intently.

As soon as the wolf caught his gaze, its thick ears twitched. Meanwhile, the small gray cat seemed to feel an itch and scratched its ear with its hind leg.

The two spirit beasts continued to stare at them with an unusual curiosity, making Jian Mo and Wu Jiong feel a little embarrassed.

Jian Mo, knowing he couldn’t do anything about the giant wolf, pulled the small gray cat into his arms and covered its face with his hand, rubbing it gently. “What are you staring at?”

The small gray cat, unlike a real cat, didn’t scratch or bite in response but instead made a soft “meow” sound from under his palm.

Jian Mo released it and gave its back a gentle stroke. As he did, he felt a pleasant sensation along his own spine and couldn’t help but marvel, “So strange.”

It felt as though someone was massaging his back, creating a strangely satisfying experience.

Wu Jiong reached over and stroked the small gray cat as well. “If only we could bring them back to our world.”

Jian Mo sighed, “It’d be tough. They might cause some chaos if we did.”

They continued chatting while the two spirit beasts stayed close. Although their presence felt a little odd, since the spirit beasts were extensions of themselves, it wasn’t something they couldn’t get used to.

When morning came, Jian Mo woke up in the soft glow of the morning sun.

Wu Jiong was already awake, leaning against the giant wolf and gazing into the distance. The wolf was still sound asleep, as was the small gray cat, curled up neatly on its back, its little belly rising and falling rhythmically.

Before Jian Mo could get a closer look, Wu Jiong turned toward him and extended a hand. “You’re awake? There’s a creek nearby. Shall we wash up?”

“Sure.” Jian Mo climbed down from the giant wolf’s back. “Should we leave these two here?”

“We could, or we could recall them,” Wu Jiong replied.

Jian Mo thought for a moment before shaking his head. “No, let’s just leave them be.”

He felt that the spirit beasts were more like manifestations of their vast subconsciousness, different from what they usually imagined, and not entirely under their control.

These tangible forms were truly rare. They might lose them once they returned home, so it was best to let them linger a little longer.

Since the creek was nearby, they wouldn’t be too far away.

After washing up, they found it inconvenient to make a fire, so they picked some wild fruits and edible vegetables to get by.

As Jian Mo looked at the food, he sighed, “I’m really starting to miss home.”

Wu Jiong grasped his hand reassuringly. “We’ll head to the lake later. Once the passage appears, we’ll go back immediately.”

Jian Mo nodded, though still uncertain. “I hope we can actually make it back to our world this time.”

Wu Jiong squeezed his hand tightly. “We will—I have a feeling.”

They returned to find the giant wolf and small gray cat already awake.

Since spirit beasts couldn’t eat regular food, they showed no interest in what Jian Mo and Wu Jiong were eating.

After finishing their simple meal, the two set out toward the lake with their spirit beasts in tow.

At the lake, there were no patrols. No one paid them any mind as they waited by the water.

They sat in the woods, chatting and stroking their spirit beasts as they waited.

Finally, by evening, they saw the familiar shadow appear in the lake.

Jian Mo stood up immediately, pulling Wu Jiong to his feet. “Let’s go. We need to move quickly.”

Beside them, the small white wolf and gray cat also stood.

Bending down, Jian Mo gave the wolf and cat one last stroke. “Goodbye.”

The small gray cat let out a soft “meow,” while the white wolf gave a low “woof.”

Wu Jiong gave them a final pat as well. “If we get the chance to come back, we’ll let them out again.”

Jian Mo agreed. “Alright.”

With that, the two spirit beasts turned into streaks of light and disappeared into their bodies.

Without further delay, Jian Mo and Wu Jiong shouldered their belongings, ensured they were properly dressed, and waded into the lake.

This was to avoid the awkward situation of ending up naked if they were accidentally transported to another world again.

This time, Jian Mo and Wu Jiong also held hands tightly as they swam into the shadowy area, dove down, and surfaced again.

The moment they saw the lake’s surface, Jian Mo immediately sensed it—they had returned to the beastmen world.

Wu Jiong noticed it too.

“Quick, let’s not stay here. We need to get ashore,” Jian Mo urged, pulling Wu Jiong’s hand.

“Okay,” Wu Jiong responded. The two of them swam swiftly to the shore and climbed out of the water.

By the lakeside, their baskets, clothes, and even the food inside the baskets were still there, untouched, as though no one had disturbed the place.

It was as if they hadn’t traveled to another world, but had merely taken a casual swim in the lake.

After inspecting their surroundings, Jian Mo suddenly turned to Wu Jiong and asked, “Do you think we’ve returned to the same evening two days ago when we went swimming here?”

“That’s possible,” Wu Jiong replied. “Otherwise, if Qing Kuo and the others saw we didn’t return, they’d definitely come looking for us and take our things back with them.”

Jian Mo wiped the water off his face, looked around, and sighed, realizing that their spirit beasts were indeed gone. “This feels even more like ‘A Dream of Mien Porridge.’”

Wu Jiong took off the basket he was carrying on his back. “It’s not a dream. We brought back food.”

They had two clay-wrapped parcels on their backs, each containing pieces of cloud scorpion breast meat. The clay casings had been baked solid, making them dense and somewhat water-resistant.

Jian Mo inspected the parcels and sighed, “Let’s pick a different lake for swimming next time—this one’s too thrilling.”

“Alright. Wait for me,” Wu Jiong said as he stripped off his wet clothes. After a moment’s hesitation, he transformed into a giant wolf.

Jian Mo climbed onto his back with their supplies, wrapping his arms around Wu Jiong’s neck in a practiced manner. “Let’s go.”

The giant wolf took off at a run, the wind whistling around them.

As they approached the He’an Tribe, the sound of playful laughter from cubs reached their ears, mixed with cheerful chirping noises.

The cubs’ laughter was high-pitched and distinctive.

Jian Mo glanced over and saw the young lion, the little fox, the small plump bird beastman, and the young giant panda cub playing together. Chirpy was beside them, leading the game.

Since they had brought food back for Chirpy today, Jian Mo called out, “What game are you playing?”

The small plump bird beastman chirped loudly and answered, “Brother Jian Mo, we’re playing ‘Statues.’”

Jian Mo smiled and asked, “How’s it going? Chirpy, it’s time to come home with us.”

Chirpy ran over to the giant wolf, and the other cubs followed, looking up at them expectantly.

Chirpy suddenly stood up on its hind legs and placed its front paws on the wolf’s back, trying to get closer to Jian Mo.

Jian Mo quickly reached out and grabbed its chubby cheeks. “Chirpy, what are you doing? Get down—Wu Jiong can’t carry you.”

“I can carry it,” the giant wolf said calmly.

Chirpy’s bright eyes sparkled as it gazed at Jian Mo. “Chirp!”

The small plump bird beastman stared up for a moment before suddenly remarking, “Brother Jian Mo, your ears look different.”

Jian Mo twitched his beast ears. “Really?”

The young panda cub studied him carefully before adding, “Brother Jian Mo, you look different overall.”

Perhaps the cubs’ senses were unusually sharp. Jian Mo hadn’t expected them to notice something so quickly. Smiling, he brushed it off. “Maybe I’m just tired from being out all day. We’re heading back to take a bath—let’s play again next time.”

As they were talking, Mo Ah came down from the mountain to fetch the cubs.

The small plump bird beastman had been staying as a guest at Ji Xun’s house, so he was going back with the young panda cub and would return to the mountain for lessons tomorrow afternoon.

Now that the cubs were of age, they could start attending classes, and lately, they had been trying to sit through lessons.

The young panda cub, being more reserved by nature, could sit still and adapt well to the classroom environment, even at a young age.

The small plump bird beastman was different. Like the older plump bird beastmen, it was a poor student—lethargic and sleepy during lessons, but bursting with energy and eager to play as soon as class ended.

Even though they were just a group of cubs, their personalities were already distinct.

Jian Mo speculated that the young panda cub might grow up to be a shaman or a scholar, while the small plump bird beastman would likely enjoy joining the tribe’s merchants. With its eloquence and boundless energy, it might even become a successful trader.

Wu Jiong reverted to human form and exchanged a few words with Mo A.

Though Mo Ah wasn’t very talkative, he got along well with Wu Jiong. As they chatted, Mo Ah asked, “Where did you two go? Did you leave the tribe again?”

Jian Mo was puzzled. “No, we were in the tribe this morning.”

Mo Ah eyed them suspiciously. “It feels like you’ve been on a long trip.”

Jian Mo chuckled. “It’s probably just your imagination. We’re really tired today. Let’s talk more tomorrow.”

The small plump bird beastman, holding the young panda cub’s paw, cheerfully waved goodbye. “Goodbye, Brother Jian Mo, goodbye, Brother Wu Jiong!”

Jian Mo laughed. “Goodbye.”

Returning home, they called Chirpy back as well.

Ying Ao had already returned, bringing back plenty of food and filling both its and Chirpy’s food bowls to the brim.

When it saw Jian Mo and Wu Jiong, Ying Ao tilted its head in confusion. “Chirp?”

Jian Mo beckoned it over. “Come out, Ying Ao. We brought something tasty back. See if you like it.”

Ying Ao slowly emerged from its nest. “Chirp?”

Jian Mo quickly retrieved one of the clay parcels from the basket and broke it open with a tap.

As soon as it cracked open, the aroma of the food wafted out. Chirpy couldn’t hold back any longer—it hopped in place twice, nearly drooling. “Chirp chirp!”

“This is cloud scorpion breast meat we brought back from elsewhere,” Jian Mo explained. “One piece for each of you—no fighting.”

Wu Jiong cooperatively took out one piece of meat. Chirpy eagerly snatched it up in its beak and ran off to devour it in a hurry.

Wu Jiong handed the second piece to Ying Ao.

Ying Ao sniffed it, then nudged Wu Jiong’s wrist with its paw. “Chirp!” It was offering the meat to Wu Jiong.

Jian Mo stroked Ying Ao’s wings. “We’ve already eaten. These two pieces are just for you and Chirpy. Go ahead and eat.”

Only then did Ying Ao take the meat and slowly move to the side to eat.

After finishing its portion, Chirpy stared longingly at Ying Ao’s piece.

Ying Ao glanced at Chirpy and seemed ready to share, but Jian Mo quickly intervened. “One piece each, Ying Ao. Eat your own. Chirpy, no stealing!”

Chirpy could only watch wistfully from the side, looking dejected. “Chirp…”

Jian Mo watched Ying Ao finish eating before tugging Wu Jiong to head back home.

They truly needed a proper bath and some relaxation—a good night’s sleep was in order after the exhausting ordeal of the past few days in another world.

Neither of them realized that as soon as they left, Ying Ao immediately spat out the meat it was holding and offered it to Chirpy. “Chirp?” Without hesitation, Chirpy snatched the meat right out of Ying Ao’s mouth. “Chirp chirp chirp!”

After gobbling it down quickly, Chirpy affectionately nuzzled Ying Ao’s head. “Chirp.” Ying Ao lazily sat down, letting it be.

After returning home, Jian Mo and Wu Jiong took a few days off to rest before heading out to gather supplies again.

When they went out, Jian Mo made a conscious decision to avoid Baisha Isle. “I’m not in the mood to visit another world for now—running back and forth is exhausting.”

Wu Jiong suggested, “We could go to the pools in the Ambus Mountains. The water there isn’t as vast as a lake, but swimming there is still quite fun.”

Jian Mo hopped onto Wu Jiong’s back. “Alright, let’s go there.”

“I’ll pack up our things. We can have dinner there,” Wu Jiong said.

“Picnics are my favorite,” Jian Mo replied with a grin.

As they packed up for the swim, Chirpy tried to follow them, but Jian Mo waved it away.

Although Chirpy was adorable, their alone time mattered more. Jian Mo didn’t want to bring such a large Chirpy along on what was essentially a date.

While packing, Jian Mo quietly slipped a box of balm into their bag. The other day, Wu Jiong had been a little too fond of touching his spirit beast form, leaving Jian Mo feeling rather heated. He had a feeling the balm would come in handy today.

After that outing, his beast ears had fully perked up, and now he had a pair of large cat ears.

To them, these ears were a novelty—something they could explore together today.

With many thoughts running through his mind but showing none of it on his face, Jian Mo neatly packed their things and even added an extra change of clothes.

Wu Jiong glanced at him and couldn’t resist stealing a quick kiss.

The two set off together.

The pools in the Ambus Mountains did not disappoint. The water was clear and deep, the night sky dazzling, and even the breeze felt just right.

They swam, ate, swam some more, and washed up until the moon hung high in the sky. Finally, feeling both satisfied and exhausted, Jian Mo sprawled out atop the giant wolf’s back. “Let’s head home.”

The giant wolf carried Jian Mo with a steady gait.

They ran down the mountain, crossed the grasslands, and passed through the forest, making their way back home.

Jian Mo dozed off on the wolf’s back as they traveled.

As they neared the He’an Tribe, Jian Mo suddenly sensed something and stiffened, glancing toward a side path.

The giant wolf noticed and turned its head toward Jian Mo. “What’s wrong?”

Jian Mo hesitated before replying, “I saw that path again.”

“The one leading home?” the wolf asked, immediately understanding.

Jian Mo leaned closer, resting his head against the wolf’s fur. “Yes.”

After a brief pause, he added, “We might have misunderstood something.”

“What do you mean?” the wolf asked.

Jian Mo explained, “Maybe it wasn’t the instability of Baisha Isle that caused us to travel between worlds. Maybe… I’m the one who’s unstable.”

The wolf responded, “Let’s go home first.” Jian Mo tightened his hold on the wolf’s neck. “Okay.”

When they returned home, neither of them felt as light-hearted as before.

Wu Jiong asked, “Do you want to try going back?”

“I’m torn,” Jian Mo admitted.

Wu Jiong touched Jian Mo’s forehead gently. “Do you want to go back?”

Jian Mo did want to, but only if it didn’t disrupt their current life.

With a sigh, Jian Mo said, “Back then, when I desperately wanted to return, the passage never appeared. Now that I don’t want to go back, an unstable passage has formed. If we ignore it, who knows if it’ll suddenly take me away?”

The thought of the passage possibly taking only Jian Mo away made Wu Jiong’s grip on his hand tighten. “If we see it again next time, let’s try going back and see what happens.”

“I’ll think about it,” Jian Mo replied.

The passage to Jian Mo’s world seemed rather stable. They saw it again the next day.

And it wasn’t just them—several others in the tribe noticed it too.

Qing Kuo even approached Wu Jiong specifically to discuss it. “I don’t know what’s going on, but it looks like a new path has appeared. Should we send someone to investigate?”

Wu Jiong responded calmly, “We’ll check it out ourselves. We’re not sure where the path leads, so we might be gone for a few days. If we don’t return, please take care of Chirpy, Ying Ao, and our small animals at home.”

Qing Kuo, sensing something was amiss, advised, “If it’s dangerous, don’t go.”

Based on his experience from crossing worlds twice, Wu Jiong reassured him, “It should be safe. If everything goes well, we’ll be back soon.”

“Alright, as long as you two know what you’re doing,” Qing Kuo said.

Wu Jiong rarely smiled, but he did then. “We’ll be fine.”

Wu Jiong seemed more determined than Jian Mo. “Don’t be afraid. Didn’t we end up in the future last time? The future has records and legends about us. Since none of them mention us suddenly disappearing in our youth, it means we must come back soon.”

Jian Mo nodded thoughtfully. “That makes sense.”

Wu Jiong patted his back gently. “So don’t be scared. Let’s go take a look. If we don’t, you might always wonder about it.”

Jian Mo agreed softly, “Alright.”

Wu Jiong gathered Jian Mo’s belongings—the umbrella, keys, and phone that wouldn’t turn on—all things he had brought with him when he first crossed over. His old clothes and shoes were already worn out and unusable.

After informing the tribe and giving instructions to Chirpy and Ying Ao, they set off, hand in hand, toward the unfamiliar path.

The path was right at the edge of the tribe, not far from their home. It didn’t take long for them to reach it.

Stepping onto the path, they felt nothing unusual. The surroundings blurred slightly, the scent in the air changed a little, and then it was over.

Neither of them felt any discomfort.

Holding Wu Jiong’s hand tightly, Jian Mo fixed his gaze on his face, carefully watching his expression.

Wu Jiong asked, “What are you looking at?”

Jian Mo hesitated before saying, “Do you feel like there’s suddenly a lot of extra stuff in your mind? Like memories that don’t belong to you.” Wu Jiong carefully considered it before shaking his head. “No.” Jian Mo took a deep breath. “Let’s go.”

They continued down the path and soon reached a stone staircase. Before long, they saw a city at the base of the mountain—Jian Mo’s familiar city.

This city was entirely different from the one they had crossed into. The buildings were different, the road layout was different, even the roadside greenery, the color of the sky, and the sunlight were noticeably different.

Jian Mo had never experienced this feeling before. Now, he realized that the sky in his old city was a bit gray, the sunlight had a slight orange hue, and the air carried a restless energy.

Noticing Jian Mo’s dazed expression, Wu Jiong gently tugged him. “Is this your original world?” Jian Mo looked down at the city below, listening to the faint honking of cars, and nodded. “It should be.”

“Then let’s go down,” Wu Jiong said.

Jian Mo took a deep breath, took the initiative to grab Wu Jiong’s hand, and said, “Let’s go.”

Jian Mo’s beast ears had already disappeared. Though their clothes looked a bit strange, it wasn’t unusual in a city where plenty of people dressed oddly, so they didn’t attract much attention.

Jian Mo suspected it was Wu Jiong’s height and slightly different appearance that made people take
a second look, but it didn’t matter—he no longer cared about others’ gazes.

Holding Wu Jiong’s hand, Jian Mo descended the mountain step by step.

On the way down, he saw a familiar face from the neighborhood out buying groceries. The acquaintance seemed a little confused upon seeing him holding Wu Jiong’s hand.

Jian Mo didn’t say anything, merely nodding in acknowledgment before continuing to lead Wu Jiong home.

Standing at the door, Jian Mo introduced, “This is my old home. There’s a small clinic downstairs, and the second and third floors are living spaces.”

Wu Jiong observed the small building in front of him. “It’s a lot better than my old home.”

Jian Mo smiled. “No, your old home was beautiful too.”

Taking a deep breath, Jian Mo said, “Come on, let me show you inside.”

He used his key to unlock the door with ease, pulling Wu Jiong in.

The floor he had mopped before crossing over was still clean, and the air inside was fresh.

Jian Mo casually plugged in the phone charger at the entrance.

Moments later, his phone powered on, displaying the current time. Despite how long he had spent in the other world, only a single day had passed here. There were barely a few new messages in his chat groups.

Everything seemed exactly as it had been before.

But—

Jian Mo turned to look at his lover standing beside him, his eyes growing warm. Everything was different now—he had a home.

Sensing Jian Mo’s gaze, Wu Jiong looked over and locked eyes with him. Noticing the emotions in Jian Mo’s expression, he leaned down and gave him a quick kiss. “What’s wrong?”

Jian Mo replied softly, “I just feel really lucky to have met you.” Wu Jiong responded by holding his hand tightly.

Jian Mo sniffed, not giving Wu Jiong a chance to say more. “Come on, let’s go upstairs. I’ll show you my room. After that, we’ll head out for shopping and food. Since we’re back in this world, I need to spend the money I saved up. It’d be a waste not to use it!”

Jian Mo, after graduating, returns to his small hometown and opens an animal clinic. One night, while he's asleep, he hears a persistent thumping noise on the roof. Assuming it's just a rat, he steps outside with a can of food to lure in a friendly, easily tricked, beautiful kitten. The kitten is indeed stunning, but while Jian Mo is happily hugging and cuddling it, the kitten looks utterly confused. Suddenly, a booming voice interrupts him. Turning around, Jian Mo is startled to find an enormous cat, much larger than himself, standing right behind him. The giant cat glares at Jian Mo with a raspy voice: "Let go of my brother!" Now it's Jian Mo's turn to be confused. As he looks up, he realizes the park, city streets, and cars around him have transformed into forests, snowy mountains, grasslands, and tribal settlements. —He has crossed into a world of beastmen! The only silver lining? He's a veterinarian, so at least his skills are somewhat relevant. Treating animals to treating beastmen... well, with some effort, it’s not entirely impossible. Extra Snippet: One day, Jian Mo and his partner Wu Jiong head out to gather supplies. As they enter the forest, they hear a series of faint, rustling noises. Peeking through the gaps between the leaves, they see a group of fluffy little creatures huddled in a circle, seemingly "complaining" about him. A chubby chick sulks: "Doctor Jian Mo said I overate and have indigestion, so I have to starve for a whole day. Chirp chirp." A little snow leopard with tearful eyes: "Doctor Jian Mo said I have cavities, so I can't eat honey anymore. Waaa." A small beaver sniffles: "Doctor Jian Mo confiscated all my hidden snacks, saying they'd make me sick. I never want to visit his clinic again. Boohoo." A little Pallas's cat glances at its companions and softly squeaks, "But... when I get treated, Doctor Jian Mo always hugs me." The fluffy critters fall silent, lost in thought about Jian Mo. Behind the trees, riding on the back of his partner who has transformed into a giant wolf, Jian Mo listens to the whole conversation: "..." The giant wolf turns to gently lick Jian Mo's newly grown beast ears. "The little ones all came to ask me to put in a good word for them." Blushing from the lick, Jian Mo pushes away the fluffy wolf head, "Pleading won’t help; at most, I'll give them some extra treats to comfort them. And you—stop licking my ears!" Wow this is basically a Quick-Transmigration medley…
And they are finally exploring his home world. Though I wonder if the time discrepancy will be a problem when they return to the beastman world?
Also I’m curious if we’ll get to read about Jian Mo’s gestational sac finally developing fully and them having kids before the extras end hmm.
