Chapter 202: Extra (2)

The He’an Tribe had recently adopted three young winged beasts, all of which were newly weaned.

These little winged beasts were about the size of large Alaskan dogs. Their eyes were round, their bodies chubby with baby fat, and their soft, downy fur was long and silky, making them irresistibly adorable.

The most remarkable thing was that Ying Ao had been training them, and thanks to the consistent socialization exercises, these three young winged beasts had become exceptionally well-mannered and tame. They posed no aggression, allowing the people of the He’an Tribe to freely pet and interact with them.

That morning, the three little fluffballs flew over to Jian Mo’s home, waiting outside for Ying Ao to return and take them flying together.

Ying Ao had gone out to forage for food beyond the tribe’s borders, while Chirpy joined the younglings playing on the open grounds.

The three little ones sat obediently outside Ying Ao’s nest, resembling three fuzzy plush toys as they quietly waited for Ying Ao to come back.

Jian Mo, having prepared breakfast, brought it to the nest to feed Chirpy and Ying Ao. Upon arriving, he immediately spotted the three tiny winged beasts.

The three of them opened their eyes in unison, and upon recognizing the familiar Jian Mo, chirped simultaneously, their movements neat and coordinated, as though specially trained.

Unable to resist their charm, Jian Mo reached out to pat their heads. The little one that was patted affectionately nuzzled his hand with its fluffy head.

Feeling the softness of their fur and the baby fat beneath, Jian Mo scratched one of the tiny beasts under its chin with his fingers and said fondly, “Why are you all so cute?”

The little ones gazed at him with their round, innocent eyes, their expressions as pure as a blank slate.

To Jian Mo, they didn’t feel like winged beasts at all but rather like little puppies—soft, cuddly pups. He picked one up, held it in his arms, and gave it a gentle squeeze.

The other two, seeing this, moved over to nuzzle him as if asking to be held too. “Chirp!” they called. Jian Mo, not wanting to neglect them, rubbed the other two before setting out food for them and starting to play with the trio.

The little ones, entirely unafraid of people, used their soft little paws to playfully tap at Jian Mo.

While playing, Jian Mo impulsively picked up one of the little ones, lowered his head, and gave it a quick kiss on the forehead.

Before he could lift his head, he suddenly heard a sharp “Kreeh!”

Turning toward the sound, he saw Chirpy had returned unnoticed and was now standing on its hind legs, wings spread wide, eyes round with disbelief, as it stared at Jian Mo kissing the tiny winged beast.

Their eyes met, and Chirpy let out another squawk: “Kreeh?!” It seemed to be asking, “How could you kiss another winged beast?”

Before Jian Mo could explain, Chirpy turned around, presenting its back to him in obvious displeasure.

Uh-oh. Kissing another winged beast while Chirpy was watching? This wasn’t going to end well.

Feeling a chill run down his spine, Jian Mo maintained a composed expression and greeted Chirpy in an attempt to cover up. “Chirpy, you’re back! We were just playing around…”

But Chirpy ignored him entirely.

When Jian Mo tried to coax it, Chirpy stubbornly kept its back turned.

After a few failed attempts to placate it, Chirpy flapped its wings and flew off, leaving only its retreating silhouette behind.

Watching the three innocent-eyed little winged beasts, Jian Mo was left feeling helpless and had no mood left to play. He poured food into Chirpy and Ying Ao’s feeding bowls, covered them securely, told the three to stay and wait, and then left.

Meanwhile, Chirpy had flown to where the younglings were playing. It puffed its cheeks and sulked, looking utterly irate.

One of the younglings, Ban Jiu, touched Chirpy’s belly with its tiny hands and asked soothingly, “Chirpy, what’s wrong?”

“Kreeh!” Chirpy replied.

Jiang Xing moved closer and observed, “Chirpy seems angry, but there aren’t any wounds. I wonder who upset it?”

He Feng speculated, “It flew out from home, so maybe Ying Ao made it mad?”

Bai Lu softly countered, “Ying Ao left the tribe early this morning and hasn’t returned yet. It can’t be Ying Ao.”

Ban Jiu asked again, “Then who could it be? Chirpy, don’t be mad. We’ll find you something tasty.”

Bai Lu added thoughtfully, “It’s probably Brother Jian Mo. Chirpy doesn’t usually get mad at strangers, but it values Brother Jian Mo highly.”

Since the situation involved Jian Mo, the younglings couldn’t do much but continue comforting Chirpy and invite it to play along.

When Wu Jiong returned, he noticed something was off and asked, “How did you upset Chirpy?”

Jian Mo sighed. “I kissed another little winged beast in front of it, and now it’s like this. I even prepared food for it, but it won’t eat. I called it out to play, and it just wouldn’t budge.”

Wu Jiong chuckled. “Was this in the morning? Wait for it to come back, and then try coaxing it. It might cool off by then.”

Jian Mo muttered, “I doubt it. Chirpy isn’t one to compromise easily.”

Wu Jiong teased, “So, will you stop trying?”

Jian Mo sighed again, resigned. “I have to try. Leaving it like this isn’t an option.”

Feeling the weight of Chirpy’s displeasure, Jian Mo decided not to go out that afternoon. Instead, he prepared a batch of delicious treats to placate it.

By evening, both Chirpy and Ying Ao returned. Holding a newly baked cake, Jian Mo approached Chirpy’s nest, ready to apologize.

Chirpy, who had been lounging lazily, turned its head away dramatically upon seeing Jian Mo approach, deliberately ignoring him.

“Chirpy, are you still mad?” Jian Mo pleaded. “I was wrong. I promise I won’t play with other winged beasts like that again.”

Chirpy refused to engage, its ears flattening in a manner reminiscent of airplane ears, signaling
clear rejection.

Despite Jian Mo’s repeated apologies and coaxing, Chirpy remained unmoved.

Out of desperation, Jian Mo turned to Ying Ao. “Ying Ao, can you help me out?”

Ying Ao looked between Jian Mo and Chirpy, gave a tentative chirp, “Chirp?”

That single sound enraged Chirpy, who immediately flared its wings and snarled, “Kreeh, kreeh, kreeh!”

Startled, Ying Ao pulled its paws close to its chest, ears folding back in submission as it let out a timid, “Chirp?”

Chirpy huffed angrily and drew out its cry, “Kreeh—!”

Reluctantly, Ying Ao retreated, choosing not to interfere in the matter.

Jian Mo sighed, then moved to sit beside Chirpy. “I really messed up. Chirpy is the cutest, and I only
have you two winged companions. I promise I’ll never give attention to others again.”

At that, Chirpy’s ear twitched, and it let out a faint, almost mournful chirp, as if expressing its grievance.

Jian Mo nudged Chirpy with his shoulder. “Really, it’s my first offense. Can’t you forgive me just this once? I promise I’ll never do it again.”

He coaxed Chirpy for a long time, pleading and reasoning with it, until finally, Chirpy seemed mostly appeased. However, it still refused to let Jian Mo touch it. Every time Jian Mo tried, Chirpy would press his hand down with its paw, firmly rejecting the gesture.

Left with no other choice, Jian Mo simply continued to coax it patiently.

Wu Jiong watched the interaction between Jian Mo and Chirpy, his eyes full of amusement. “You won’t dare to mess up next time, will you?”

Jian Mo sighed, “Dare? I wouldn’t even dream of it.”

He let out another sigh. “It’s my fault. Chirpy’s feelings are so passionate and pure, and I let it down.”

Wu Jiong slung an arm around Jian Mo’s shoulder. “Keep making delicious food for Chirpy these next few days and take them out for some fun.”

Jian Mo considered the suggestion and nodded. “Where should we go?”

Wu Jiong suggested, “By the lake, up the snowy mountains, the alpine meadows… or even to another tribe.”

Jian Mo nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll draft up a plan.”

This trip wouldn’t just be to appease Chirpy—they could take the chance to enjoy some time outside. Recently, the He’an Tribe hadn’t been particularly busy. With the weather so nice, it felt like a waste to stay cooped up in the tribe every day.

Before Jian Mo could finish drafting his plan, he saw Ban Ming running to Chirpy’s nest, whispering to Chirpy for quite a while. The sight struck Jian Mo as odd.

Curious, Jian Mo called out to Ban Ming, “What are you doing? Why are you sneaking around like that?”

Ban Ming frowned at the accusation. “I’m not sneaking around! I’m discussing something important with Chirpy!”

Jian Mo couldn’t help but laugh. “Something important, with Chirpy? That just sounds strange.”

Ban Ming hesitated for a moment. “I’ll tell you, but you have to promise to keep it secret.”

Jian Mo nodded solemnly. “Of course. At most, I’ll only tell Wu Jiong. No gossiping with others.”

Ban Ming quickly added, “No! Don’t tell the chieftain either.”

Jian Mo shrugged. “Fine, fine. Out with it—stop beating around the bush.”

Ban Ming took a deep breath. “I want to ask Chirpy to help deliver a token of affection to Ah Meng. I’m planning to ask him to become my mate.”

Jian Mo was taken aback by the bold declaration. He scrutinized Ban Ming. Over the past two years, Ban Ming had matured significantly, shedding his youthful demeanor to become a tall and handsome young man, his striking features now even more prominent.

A young man like him asking his beloved to become his mate wasn’t surprising at all.

Jian Mo thought for a moment and said, “It’s great that you want to become mates, but have you asked his opinion? Does he want to become your mate? If you’re unsure, it’s better not to make a public request.”

Ban Ming blushed slightly. “We’ve discussed it before, and Ah Meng agreed. I just want to make it official this time. Both Ah Meng and I like Chirpy a lot, so I thought it’d be meaningful for Chirpy to deliver the token of affection.”

Intrigued, Jian Mo asked, “How will it deliver it?”

Ban Ming grinned but didn’t reveal the details. “You’ll see when the time comes.”

Jian Mo pressed further, “If you two become mates, where will you live?”

Ban Ming replied, “That’ll depend on Ah Meng. We could live in our tribe, or I could move to the Xiong Ying Tribe. I’ve already discussed it with my family, and they’re okay with it. If we live in our tribe, everyone will help gather materials to build our home.”

Jian Mo waved him off with a smile. “All right. Go on with your preparations.”

With Jian Mo’s approval, Ban Ming happily took Chirpy and left.

Ban Ming even asked Jian Mo for help in calling Ah Meng to the He’an Tribe. “If I ask him to come, he’ll guess what’s going on immediately, and there’ll be no surprise.”

Jian Mo chuckled. “You’re really romantic. If I help, can I watch the proposal?”

Ban Ming generously agreed. “Sure! Ah Hu and the others will be there to cheer me on too.”

Jian Mo grinned. “It’s a deal.”

Ah Meng was one of Jian Mo’s students, visiting the He’an Tribe periodically to report and seek advice. Based on the schedule, it was about time for his next visit.

Jian Mo sent word to Ah Meng, who arrived soon after with a list of questions.

Jian Mo listened to Ah Meng’s report and carefully answered all his questions. Once they were finished, Jian Mo glanced out the small clinic’s window and saw that Ban Ming and the others were ready. Smiling, he said to Ah Meng, “Let’s call it a day, shall we?”

Ah Meng nodded, packing up his things. “Thank you, Teacher. I’ve learned a lot today.”

Jian Mo smiled warmly. “No problem. Come on, let’s head out.”

As they stepped out of the clinic, they saw Ban Ming waiting nearby. Ah Meng assumed Ban Ming had come to escort him, so he approached with a smile, murmuring a polite greeting to Jian Mo.

At that moment, the sound of flapping wings filled the air. Instinctively, Ah Meng looked up and saw Chirpy flying straight toward them, the gust from its wings ruffling his hair.

He reached up to smooth his hair, just as Ban Ming joined him. Chirpy flew directly overhead, releasing a wooden box from its claws.

Ban Ming caught the box expertly, dropping to one knee. “Ah Meng.”

Ah Meng’s eyes widened in realization, his gaze fixed on Ban Ming in astonishment.

Ban Ming opened the box, his eyes bright with emotion as he said, “I love you. Will you be my mate?”

Tears welled up in Ah Meng’s eyes as he grasped Ban Ming’s hands. “I will.”

Beaming, Ban Ming took the items from the box—a pair of circular clasp earrings, made of beautiful, dark blue metal with shimmering fragments of glass embedded within. He fastened one earring onto Ah Meng’s ear, the clasp clicking securely.

Ah Meng took the other earring and fastened it onto Ban Ming’s ear.

Since beastmen often shifted between forms, earrings were more practical than rings for proposals. These earrings stayed firmly attached even when they transformed, causing no discomfort or risk of loss.

With the earrings securely fastened, Ban Ming’s proposal was officially a success.

Behind them, Ban Ming’s friends erupted into applause and cheers, with whistles punctuating the celebration.

Jian Mo also joined in, clapping with a smile.

Wu Jiong appeared out of nowhere, embracing Jian Mo from behind. Together, they watched as Ban Ming and Ah Meng hugged tightly in the center of the crowd, their eyes red but their faces alight with joy.

Jian Mo turned and kissed Wu Jiong’s cheek, murmuring, “This is true happiness.”

Wu Jiong returned the kiss. “I hope they can be as happy as we are.”

Jian Mo chuckled. “You even took the chance to bless yourself, huh?”

Wu Jiong smirked. “Of course.”

As they spoke, Chirpy returned, settling down beside Jian Mo. Jian Mo rubbed Chirpy’s back
affectionately. “Chirpy, you were amazing today!”

Chirpy, now reconciled with Jian Mo, didn’t mind being petted and let out a soft chirp.

Jian Mo smiled, then stood on tiptoe to plant a kiss on Chirpy’s forehead. Wu Jiong followed suit, kissing the other side of Chirpy’s head.

Chirpy’s eyes lit up, and it raised its tiny paw to touch its head, letting out a delighted “Chirp!”

Ying Ao flew over just then, and Jian Mo beckoned it over. Together with Wu Jiong, they kissed Ying Ao as well.

The four of them—Jian Mo, Wu Jiong, Chirpy, and Ying Ao—watched the celebration of Ban Ming and Ah Meng’s new union, smiles gracing every face and beak.

Around them, the crowd continued cheering as Ban Ming and Ah Meng embraced, their teary eyes glowing with happiness.

Jian Mo, after graduating, returns to his small hometown and opens an animal clinic. One night, while he's asleep, he hears a persistent thumping noise on the roof. Assuming it's just a rat, he steps outside with a can of food to lure in a friendly, easily tricked, beautiful kitten. The kitten is indeed stunning, but while Jian Mo is happily hugging and cuddling it, the kitten looks utterly confused. Suddenly, a booming voice interrupts him. Turning around, Jian Mo is startled to find an enormous cat, much larger than himself, standing right behind him. The giant cat glares at Jian Mo with a raspy voice: "Let go of my brother!" Now it's Jian Mo's turn to be confused. As he looks up, he realizes the park, city streets, and cars around him have transformed into forests, snowy mountains, grasslands, and tribal settlements. —He has crossed into a world of beastmen! The only silver lining? He's a veterinarian, so at least his skills are somewhat relevant. Treating animals to treating beastmen... well, with some effort, it’s not entirely impossible. Extra Snippet: One day, Jian Mo and his partner Wu Jiong head out to gather supplies. As they enter the forest, they hear a series of faint, rustling noises. Peeking through the gaps between the leaves, they see a group of fluffy little creatures huddled in a circle, seemingly "complaining" about him. A chubby chick sulks: "Doctor Jian Mo said I overate and have indigestion, so I have to starve for a whole day. Chirp chirp." A little snow leopard with tearful eyes: "Doctor Jian Mo said I have cavities, so I can't eat honey anymore. Waaa." A small beaver sniffles: "Doctor Jian Mo confiscated all my hidden snacks, saying they'd make me sick. I never want to visit his clinic again. Boohoo." A little Pallas's cat glances at its companions and softly squeaks, "But... when I get treated, Doctor Jian Mo always hugs me." The fluffy critters fall silent, lost in thought about Jian Mo. Behind the trees, riding on the back of his partner who has transformed into a giant wolf, Jian Mo listens to the whole conversation: "..." The giant wolf turns to gently lick Jian Mo's newly grown beast ears. "The little ones all came to ask me to put in a good word for them." Blushing from the lick, Jian Mo pushes away the fluffy wolf head, "Pleading won’t help; at most, I'll give them some extra treats to comfort them. And you—stop licking my ears!"
