Chapter 200: I Love You
Jian Mo’s students had been carefully selected, and their progress was impressive.
As winter set in, Jian Mo conducted the first formal exam, which he referred to as the “midterm,” to assess his students’ progress. Depending on their results, he planned to adjust the curriculum as needed.
During this period, Jian Mo focused on teaching his students literacy, but they hadn’t learned many characters yet. Thus, the exam primarily consisted of practical tasks, with only a few written questions.
The practical portion covered a broad range of skills, from diagnosing illnesses to harvesting and preparing medicine. Anything Jian Mo had taught was fair game.
His students were incredibly nervous about the exam. Even Ye Luo, usually composed and calm, seized every moment to review, terrified of failing.
The tension was palpable throughout the He’an Tribe. Even the little ones tiptoed past the medical students, careful not to disturb them.
Qing Kuo found it amusing and remarked during a chat with Jian Mo, “Now it’s not just the patients who are afraid of you. Even your students are starting to be wary.”
Jian Mo immediately protested, “That’s nonsense! Since when are my patients afraid of me? I’m so approachable!”
Qing Kuo grinned. “Your gentle demeanor doesn’t change the fact that you look intimidating when you’re treating someone.”
Jian Mo huffed, “It’s the illnesses that are scary, not me. Did someone complain about me?”
Qing Kuo waved his hand. “Not at all. I just thought it was funny. By the way, I ran into Ji Xun while foraging today. He asked me to check if you and the clan leader are free in the next few days. Chuo Zhi’s tribe leader wants to invite you for dinner.”
Jian Mo blinked in surprise but quickly nodded. “I should be free after the students finish their exams. I was planning to give them a short break to visit their families.”
Qing Kuo offered, “I’ll let Ji Xun know tomorrow so he can finalize the time.”
Jian Mo agreed, “Sounds good. If not, Wu Jiong can go and confirm the details.”
Socializing occasionally sounded like fun to Jian Mo. He originally considered inviting Ji Xun and the others to the tribe for convenience, but Ji Xun later replied that they’d like to host the dinner on the mountain instead, making it easier to chat in a more relaxed setting.
Jian Mo agreed after clarifying the arrangements.
The students completed their midterms in no time.
Most of the tests were practical, and Jian Mo only needed a quick glance to gauge his students’ abilities.
As expected, the students performed well, and the teaching methods proved effective. At this pace, they would be ready to return to their tribes as village healers by spring, capable of relieving others’ ailments.
Feeling gratified, Jian Mo finished grading and gave the students a five-day break to visit their families.
In this world, people rarely traveled far from their homes, let alone spent extended periods away. After weeks of lessons, he thought they must be missing home, so the break was much needed.
The five-day holiday also accommodated students who lived farther away, giving them time to make the round trip.
Most out-of-town students quickly left, while Ye Luo and the other local students joined hunting and foraging trips they hadn’t been part of in a long while.
Jian Mo, on the other hand, eagerly dragged Wu Jiong to their dinner invitation.
The day wasn’t ideal weather-wise—gray clouds hung low, and the occasional sunlight pierced through the overcast sky in brilliant beams that split the gloomy early winter landscape.
Although it hadn’t snowed recently, frost covered the ground, and the snow atop the mountain trails hadn’t melted.
Wrapped tightly in a fur coat, Jian Mo hugged the giant wolf’s neck and leaned forward slightly, shielding himself from the biting wind that howled past.
His torso pressed against the wolf’s warm back. Though he wasn’t particularly cold, the sensation of the rushing wind was extraordinary.
The gusts were so strong they made his teeth feel icy.
Eventually, he had to pull his collar up over most of his face, which made things much more bearable.
When they arrived at Ji Xun’s home, they saw that Chuo Zhi and Qi Ming were already there.
Chuo Zhi was as lean as ever, exuding a kind of striking elegance that caught the eye.
Unable to resist, Jian Mo approached and gently hugged him. “Chuo Zhi, long time no see.”
Chuo Zhi smiled warmly. “It’s been a while. Hello, Clan Leader Wu Jiong.”
Wu Jiong nodded in acknowledgment and exchanged greetings with Qi Ming before the polite pleasantries ended.
Ji Xun emerged from the house, grinning as he greeted everyone. “You’re all here. Let’s have hot pot tonight! Pick what you like and toss it in. We’ve got plenty of ingredients, so feel free to eat as much as you want.”
Both Ji Xun and Chuo Zhi were expecting, so their tastes had shifted slightly. Hot pot, with its flexible and customizable options, was the perfect choice.
Following Ji Xun’s invitation, everyone took their seats around the hot pot setup indoors.
Jian Mo chuckled. “I was going to check on you all first.”
Ji Xun tossed a plate of meat into the bubbling pot. “There’s no rush. Eat first, then check. The meat is fresh—Mo E hunted it early this morning. The dried vegetables and mushrooms were sun-dried by me, and Chuo Zhi brought the fresh greens and tubers.”
Jian Mo surveyed the spread with delight. “The ingredients today are amazing.”
Ji Xun raised a brow. “Of course! We live in the mountains—how could we ever run short on food?”
Mo E arrived with cups of sweetened herbal tea. Since Ji Xun and Chuo Zhi couldn’t drink fruit wine, the group opted for the refreshing tea. Two pots were prepared: one for the expecting parents and one for everyone else.
Taking a sip, Jian Mo exclaimed, “Wow, this tea is incredible—sweet, cool, and refreshing. How did you make it?”
Ji Xun grinned. “It’s a mix of leaves and lots of honey powder. The best part? Your pot was chilled in the stream outside.”
Jian Mo marveled, “No wonder—it’s perfect!”
Ji Xun smirked. “Drink up and dig into the food. If we don’t finish it all, it won’t taste as good tomorrow.”
Chuo Zhi laughed softly. “Don’t worry. The beastmen can clean up the leftovers.”
Qi Ming nodded in agreement. “Exactly. We’ll handle it.”
Hearing this, Jian Mo glanced at them playfully. “Looks like you’ve been getting along well recently.”
Qi Ming beamed with joy. “We’ve decided to become mates. Soon, I’ll move to the Bai Zhi Tribe to live there.”
Jian Mo was a bit surprised, not expecting Qi Ming to move to the Bai Zhi Tribe rather than each of them staying in their own tribe or Chuo Zhi moving to the Yu Qi Tribe.
Jian Mo asked, “Will this make handling your daily responsibilities in the Yu Qi Tribe harder?”
Qi Ming replied, “It’s manageable. The two tribes aren’t far apart, so I’ll make time to return daily for work. After a couple of years, I’ll train a new leader to take over.”
Jian Mo raised his tea cup with admiration. “That’s no small feat. Here’s to both of you!”
Everyone raised their cups and drank.
As the conversation continued, Ji Xun, Chuo Zhi, and their household shared stories about their lives on the mountain. Living in such isolation could be lonely, but recently, the Lin Yan Tribe’s armadillos had moved north, and they’d occasionally stop by for a chat.
Jian Mo found it amusing. “The Lin Yan Tribe speaks so slowly—how do you manage to hold a conversation?”
Ji Xun chuckled. “It’s not that hard. Their words are easy to understand. After two or three words, you usually get what they mean, so you don’t have to wait for them to finish.”
Jian Mo gave him a thumbs up in admiration.
Ji Xun added, “The Lin Yan Tribe is actually really easy to get along with. When we trade with them, they never haggle over prices. They’re much easier to deal with than most tribes.”
Jian Mo nodded. “That’s true. When we visit their territory to forage or gather, they never mind, but we always send over compensation anyway.”
Ji Xun agreed. “Same here. They’re great neighbors.”
The conversation gradually shifted to Jian Mo’s teaching. Jian Mo, feeling proud of his students’ progress, said with a hint of pride, “By next year, we’ll have a whole group of healers here. Getting medical help will be so much easier.”
Ji Xun marveled, “That’s incredible. You’re always praising what we do, but really, you’re the one doing something remarkable.”
Jian Mo smiled, raising his cup again. “Not at all. I just do what I can. Cheers, everyone, to our wonderful lives!”
The hot pot meal stretched from the afternoon into the evening, leaving Jian Mo completely stuffed.
After the meal, Jian Mo gave Ji Xun and Chuo Zhi a thorough checkup to ensure everything was fine. Satisfied with their health, he bid them farewell and prepared to return home.
Feeling overly full, Jian Mo decided against riding on Wu Jiong’s back. Instead, the two opted for a leisurely walk, planning to rest when tired.
Although the night air was cold, the warmth from their hearty meal kept them comfortable. The brisk wind barely registered against the lingering heat in their bodies.
As they descended along the mountain ridge, they were surrounded by fields of withered grass. The cold wind rustled the dry blades, and under the glowing sunset, with the blue sky and distant snowcapped mountains as a backdrop, the scene was breathtakingly beautiful.
Jian Mo plucked a long stalk of dry grass from the roadside and held it in his mouth. “This place is stunning.”
Wu Jiong replied, “We should come out for walks more often.”
Jian Mo laughed. “I agree. When we’re tired of heading east, we’ll go west. When the south gets old, we’ll head north.”
Wu Jiong nodded. “When the mountains bore us, we’ll stroll by the river. When the forest feels too familiar, we’ll explore the lakeshore. No paths? Then every place is a path.”
Jian Mo laughed aloud, the sound echoing warmly in the crisp air.
As they walked, Jian Mo suddenly leaped onto Wu Jiong’s back. “Carry me!”
Wu Jiong didn’t mind, easily lifting him and continuing their slow pace.
The quiet journey felt cozy and tender, as if the distance between them and home was shorter than usual—not enough to satisfy their desire to walk.
When they neared the tribe, Jian Mo spotted a strange path beyond some bushes.
Having been busy teaching lately, he hadn’t been out foraging in a while. Thinking it was a newly made trail, he studied it curiously.
At that moment, Wu Jiong’s grip on Jian Mo’s hand tightened slightly. Surprised, Jian Mo looked up and saw Wu Jiong’s face had gone pale.
“What’s wrong?” Jian Mo asked.
Wu Jiong paused before answering, his voice heavy. “That’s not a new path. It’s the path you came from.”
Jian Mo froze, taking a moment to understand. Wu Jiong was referring to the road that led to the modern world.
“That can’t be,” Jian Mo murmured.
Wu Jiong said nothing, leading Jian Mo to the bushes.
Standing at the edge, they peered through the foliage.
There it was: a path with stone steps leading into the jungle. Beyond the trees, Jian Mo could faintly make out the outline of a modern city.
His mouth fell open in shock.
Wu Jiong’s hand loosened slightly but then gripped his tightly again, almost painfully.
His voice was hoarse, as if it had been chilled by winter frost. “Do you want to go take a look?”
Jian Mo turned to Wu Jiong.
The blood had drained from Wu Jiong’s face, leaving it ghostly pale.
Jian Mo squeezed Wu Jiong’s hand firmly. “No.”
“Of course not.”
Wu Jiong opened his mouth to speak but then closed it again.
The two stood before the path until night fell.
The path remained, but mist gradually rose, veiling the road and obscuring the city beyond.
Jian Mo finally turned to Wu Jiong. “Let’s go back to the tribe.”
Wu Jiong hesitated. “Are you sure you don’t need to think about it more?”
Jian Mo’s tone was light and unwavering. “No need. I chose to be with you, to live in the He’an Tribe. My life now feels full, peaceful, and happy.”
Wu Jiong stared at Jian Mo.
Jian Mo tightened his grip on Wu Jiong’s hand and smiled. “My life has moved to a new chapter. I can’t go back, and I don’t want to. That road doesn’t lead to the future; it leads to the past.”
Wu Jiong suddenly pulled Jian Mo into a tight embrace.
Wrapped in Wu Jiong’s arms, Jian Mo paused before patting his back. “You are the love of my life, my everything. Nothing can surpass you, so don’t worry anymore.”
Wu Jiong’s voice was muffled, as if soaked with dew. “I feel the same. I love you.”
[The End]

OMG! OMG! OMG!
Thank you for the update!
Wow! Is it like once a year that the path appears or sth? Would be cool to go together in the future to have a look?
