Chapter 193: Calling Out by the Window
Seeing Chirpy about to lose its temper and nearly fight Dala, Jian Mo quickly stepped in to stop them. “Don’t rush; here, Dala, have some jerky.”
Dala hesitated, backed off slightly, and grabbed the jerky Jian Mo offered. It then turned to Chirpy and let out a sharp cry, “Screech!”
Chirpy bared its teeth in response, “Screech, screech, screech!”
Beside them, Ying Ao had already finished the food in its bowl. It was now grooming itself leisurely. After that, it restrainedly nudged Jian Mo gently, gazing intently at the jerky in his hand, silently signaling its request.
Jian Mo handed a strip of jerky to Ying Ao. “Eat slowly, okay?”
Chirpy snatched its food bowl back, quickly finished the remaining meat, and turned to look at Jian Mo expectantly. Jian Mo understood immediately and handed it a piece of jerky as well. “Get along with your friends and no fighting, all right?”
Chirpy sat on the ground holding the jerky, chewing on it slowly without replying.
Jian Mo reached out to touch Dala, noticing that it felt softer and plumper than before. Its flesh was surprisingly squishy, and he wondered if it was just his imagination.
After settling the winged beasts, Jian Mo and Wu Jiong finished cleaning up and went back indoors to sleep. They had done so much today, and Jian Mo was utterly exhausted. He didn’t want to think about anything else—he just wanted a good night’s sleep. Whatever needed addressing could wait until tomorrow.
The next morning, Jian Mo was woken by Wu Jiong at the crack of dawn. Half-asleep, he groggily mumbled, “Why are you waking me so early?”
Wu Jiong placed a damp cloth on his face and helped him wipe it clean. “We need to get moving. Let’s finish trading with the people of the Tian Ning Tribe and head back quickly, or we won’t make it home by nightfall. If you’re still tired, you can nap on Chirpy’s back later.”
Jian Mo relented, muttering, “Fine, let’s pay them a visit.”
The Tian Ning Tribe’s leader, Chao Qi, was Peng Xi’s father and Huan Yu’s partner. Jian Mo and Wu Jiong had interacted with them several times and were on familiar terms.
When the two arrived at Chao Qi’s residence, Huan Yu greeted them with a smile. “We wanted to talk to you last night, but it was already too late, and we didn’t want to disturb you. Did you feed Dala for us?”
Jian Mo replied, “I just gave it some jerky. It seems like Dala’s gained weight.”
Huan Yu nodded. “Lately, we’ve been trading dried meat with the Shan Ming Tribe. We’ve been mixing the jerky into their food, and they’ve become much more eager to eat.”
“That makes sense,” Jian Mo remarked. “Dala’s texture even feels different now.”
Huan Yu laughed. “We’ve been trading a lot of pottery recently. Are you here for pottery as well? Would you like to trade for some small jars?”
He brought out a small jar for them to inspect. “The Meng Shui Tribe loves these little jars, and I think you might find them useful too.”
Jian Mo examined the jar closely. It was about the size of a peach, glazed on the outside with a smooth, hard finish. It was robust and emitted a crisp sound when tapped, showcasing exceptional quality. It even carried a refined aesthetic, with black ceramic adorned with white-glaze patterns that looked exquisite—almost ahead of its time.
“This is stunning,” Jian Mo praised.
Huan Yu beamed. “Right? It took us a lot of effort to design these. They’re perfect for storing ointments and prevent them from spoiling.”
Jian Mo chuckled. “No wonder the Meng Shui Tribe loves these. What’s the exchange rate?”
Huan Yu replied, “It depends on how many you need and what you offer in return. We don’t require much.”
Jian Mo suggested trading fabric. “How about these beast-hair fabrics we brought along?”
Huan Yu inspected the fabric carefully and agreed to exchange one piece for three small jars.
Jian Mo also traded some seasoning powders, jerky, and metal pieces to get even more jars.
Huan Yu noted, “Your offerings are much better than what other tribes bring us.”
“Do you trade pottery often with other tribes?” Jian Mo asked.
“Definitely. Many tribes don’t even bother firing pottery anymore. They think making small quantities isn’t worth the effort and prefer trading with us. Since we enjoy making pottery and aren’t fond of hunting or gathering, trading for things like meat, dried vegetables, fruits, and animal hides works perfectly.”
“That’s great. It’s good for resources to circulate,” Jian Mo commented.
Huan Yu nodded in agreement. “Exactly. The Bai Zhi Tribe even trades our pottery with faraway tribes. As long as we keep producing, we don’t have to worry about demand.”
After chatting for a while, Jian Mo felt that inter-tribal exchanges were increasing, filling him with a sense of satisfaction. The neighboring tribes were improving so much.
Once they wrapped up the trade, Huan Yu asked, “Doctor Jian Mo, since you’re here, would you like to hold a clinic? If word gets out, many people will likely come to you for treatment.”
Jian Mo declined politely. “Not today. Perhaps next time. If anyone is unwell, they can visit us at the He’an Tribe.”
Huan Yu expressed regret. “But the He’an Tribe is so far.”
Jian Mo reassured him, “You can ask the Bai Zhi Tribe to help transport patients. We’ve already spoken to them about it. If you offer enough supplies, they’re willing to help.”
Huan Yu was surprised. “Really? They’re running a pretty extensive business now.”
Jian Mo smiled. “It’s not just about business. They see it as helping others too. Tribes without winged beasts find traveling on land difficult. It’s bumpy and can worsen conditions. The Bai Zhi Tribe’s young ones are willing to help, which is commendable.”
“That’s true,” Huan Yu agreed. “Speaking of winged beasts, our tribe’s young ones are all reserved now. Ever since people saw Chirpy and Ying Ao, interest in raising winged beasts has skyrocketed.”
Jian Mo was taken aback. “Your tribe’s winged beasts have offspring?”
Huan Yu shook his head. “Not yet, but it’s only a matter of time. A few tribes have already reserved some in advance.”
Jian Mo commented, “I can imagine. Soon, the nearby tribes will all start a trend of raising winged beasts.”
Huan Yu agreed. “That’s what we think too. In a way, raising winged beasts began with you.”
Jian Mo said sincerely, “If they raise them well and treat them kindly, it’s a good thing. The winged beasts can even make friends with each other.”
In the wild, winged beasts weren’t particularly strong. If they were, they wouldn’t be omnivores with a diet primarily of plants.
In fact, wild winged beasts like Chirpy were usually timid and harmless, which was considered normal. Ying Ao, however, was a standout—an exceptional case among winged beasts, far tougher than the average.
Jian Mo and Wu Jiong, needing to process the Mien Fruit, prepared to leave after trading pottery with Huan Yu and his tribe. The bird beastmen were also ready to depart.
After a quick breakfast, everyone set out before the sun climbed too high. Jian Mo, still half-asleep, let Wu Jiong guide him onto Chirpy’s back, while Ying Ao carried the supplies in its talons as they flew.
With Wu Jiong there, Jian Mo felt completely at ease. Leaning against him, he drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep.
By midday, they stopped in a grassy plain to rest. They ate some jerky, drank some water, and replenished their energy before resuming their flight in the afternoon.
Having slept all morning, Jian Mo felt refreshed. Nestled against Wu Jiong, he spoke softly, “The young bird beastmen from the Bai Zhi Tribe sure are lively, but they’re surprisingly diligent when it comes to work.”
The bird beastmen, constantly flying between tribes, worked hard for the resources they earned. Their compensation was well-deserved.
Wu Jiong replied quietly, “Their personalities may be lively, but any group capable of forming its own tribe is bound to have solid qualities.”
Jian Mo nodded. “The Pallas Cat beastmen of the Yu Qi Tribe are the same. When they commit to a task, they’re impressively focused.”
Unaware that Jian Mo and Wu Jiong were discussing them, the bird beastmen continued flying in a neat line ahead, flapping their wings tirelessly. Chirpy and Ying Ao followed behind, using the air currents created by the group to conserve energy.
They flew like this all afternoon. By sunset, they had reached the southern border of the Red Zhen Tribe, near the outskirts of the Meng Shui Tribe and close to the He’an Tribe.
At this point, the two groups parted ways. The bird beastmen headed to the Meng Shui Tribe for trading, while Jian Mo and his group flew directly back to the He’an Tribe.
Wan Zheng called out loudly from the front, “Brother Jian Mo, you guys go ahead! Tonight or tomorrow morning, we’ll come to visit and see how your trading went.”
Jian Mo responded, “Sounds good! Come by anytime—we’ll be at the tribe.”
Wan Zheng grinned. “Alright, see you tonight or tomorrow.”
As Jian Mo and his group flew back to the He’an Tribe, they saw beastmen from the Meng Shui Tribe in their beast forms, carrying their young ones back to the tribe.
Chirpy and Ying Ao were flying low, and the younglings on the beasts’ backs spotted them. They excitedly waved and shouted, “Brother Jian Mo! Chief Wu Jiong!”
Looking down, Jian Mo called back, “Why are you heading back so late?”
The younglings yelled in response, “We had practical training today, and it ran longer than usual, so we’re late!”
Jian Mo nodded. “I see. We’re heading back too. See you tomorrow!”
With no place to hover in the sky for long, Chirpy and Ying Ao exchanged brief farewells before continuing their flight.
The younglings craned their necks, watching them leave. “See you tomorrow!”
Jian Mo’s group returned to the He’an Tribe just as night fell. The younglings saw their arrival and ran together to greet them at their home.
“Brother Jian Mo, Chief, you’re finally back!” they chirped.
Jian Mo smiled as he unloaded supplies from Chirpy and Ying Ao. “That’s right. What’s been happening while we were gone?”
The younglings chattered all at once:
“A brother from the Yi Gu Tribe hurt his tailbone. He came for treatment, but you weren’t here, so he hobbled back.”
“Someone asked if you brought back scar ointment.”
“The past few days, everyone went to the river to harvest a batch of Pearl Algae. Qing Kuo said this would be the last batch for the year.”
Jian Mo listened with amusement. “Our tribe seems lively as always.”
The younglings nodded eagerly. “It’s even better when you’re here, Brother Jian Mo!”
They asked curiously, “What did you bring back?”
Jian Mo showed them the Mien Fruit, vegetables, medicinal herbs, large fish, and other items they had collected, leaving the younglings wide-eyed with amazement.
After tidying up briefly, Jian Mo retrieved the sap from the Kun Zhi tree to start preparing ointment. If he delayed any longer, the Mien Fruit might spoil.
Hearing that ointment was being made, the younglings eagerly ran to the side yard, bringing firewood with their stubby legs. The gray tabby Pallas Cats, who couldn’t yet transform, carried pieces in their mouths.
Since they had gathered a substantial amount of Mien Fruit, they had to process it in two batches.
Whenever Jian Mo made ointments, he meticulously used a small scale to weigh the herbs by firelight before beginning to prepare them. With a proper formula, they no longer relied on guesswork and carefully followed the recipe.
Busy with the ointment-making, there was no time to cook dinner.
Qing Kuo, having prepared food at home, brought it over. “How was the harvest this time?”
Jian Mo looked up. “Quite fruitful.”
Qing Kuo smiled. “Sounds like it went well.”
Jian Mo asked, “Have you heard of the Yu Qi Tribe’s vegetables?”
Qing Kuo shook his head. “It’s so far away; I haven’t. Are they growing vegetables too?”
Jian Mo replied, “Yes, they’re growing them near hot springs. The vegetables are crisp, tender, and sweet—really delicious.”
Jian Mo chatted with Qing Kuo about the vegetables and new pesticides from the Yu Qi Tribe.
After listening, Qing Kuo remarked, “It seems everyone is gradually getting used to farming.”
Jian Mo was curious. “Everyone? Which other tribes have started farming without me knowing?”
Qing Kuo explained, “The Meng Shui Tribe started first. They’re growing pearl rice, Mien Grass, tendon grass, and scallions. They’ve cultivated quite a large field. Other tribes followed suit. I heard they were inspired by what we were growing during the hunting festival.”
Jian Mo nodded. “That makes sense. Chief Yun Long always has a good vision. It’s not surprising that the Meng Shui Tribe would follow our example. Once others see them farming, it’s easier for them to join in.”
Qing Kuo continued, “Yes, but even the Bing Jiang Tribe starting to farm is surprising. When I asked their people, they said they’re not relying on it for food, and it doesn’t take much effort, so they’re just planting casually.”
Jian Mo thought about the short-tempered bear beastmen of the Bing Jiang Tribe and couldn’t imagine them patiently tending crops. He shook his head at the idea.
As they talked about the various tribes, Qing Kuo suddenly slapped his forehead. “Oh, right! The Yi Gu Tribe delivered a few baskets of Mien Fruit for you. I left them in the kitchen.”
Jian Mo asked, “Why did they suddenly send Mien Fruit? Are they asking us to do something for them?”
“No, they said it’s nothing valuable. They just happened to gather some while harvesting and sent some over for you to try,” Qing Kuo replied.
Jian Mo nodded. “Got it. In a few days, when we have time, we’ll make a trip to the Yi Gu Tribe to thank them.”
“Do as you see fit,” Qing Kuo said. “Are you making Mien Fruit cake with it? Or brewing wine?”
Jian Mo replied, “Let’s make Mien Fruit cake to eat. Skip the wine. The efficiency of brewing Mien Fruit wine isn’t great. We’ve traded for plenty of pearl rice this year. Once it gets colder, we can brew directly with pearl rice—it’s more convenient for drinking or other uses.”
Mien Fruit wine had an odd taste, and when resources were plentiful, Jian Mo didn’t particularly like it.
Jian Mo and the others worked late into the night, finally finishing the scar ointment.
When they were done, Jian Mo’s back felt like it was about to break.
Wu Jiong reached out his large hand to massage Jian Mo’s lower back. “Rest well tomorrow. Don’t go out.”
Jian Mo sighed comfortably. “I won’t go out. Even if you call me, I’m not going. I need to sleep in tomorrow.”
Wu Jiong cautioned, “Just don’t sleep too late, or you won’t be able to sleep at night.”
Jian Mo found Wu Jiong’s nagging endearing and smiled. “Got it.”
Wu Jiong bent down and kissed him. “Come on, let’s take a bath.”
The weather was cold, so they bathed at home. The bathroom was spacious enough for the two of them to bathe together.
After washing up, drying their hair, and cleaning themselves thoroughly, they snuggled together and drifted off to sleep.
Jian Mo was determined to have a good rest and planned to sleep in at least until noon.
But that plan didn’t work out.
The next morning, the bird beastmen arrived—bringing Yun Long with them, saying they needed to talk to Jian Mo.
Hearing the commotion outside, Jian Mo buried his head under the blanket, pretending he wasn’t home.
Unfortunately, the ever-diligent younglings knew he hadn’t gone out and brought the visitors to his house. They started calling for him from outside.
Jian Mo lingered in bed for about ten seconds. Realizing that if he stayed any longer, the bird beastmen might transform back into their beast forms and fly up to his window, he reluctantly threw off the blanket. Wrapping himself in clothes, he opened the window and called down, “I’m coming! Just wait a moment.”
The younglings cheered happily. “We told you Brother Jian Mo was home!”
The bird beastmen chimed in, “You kids are amazing. With so many people coming and going in the tribe, you’ve kept track of everything.”
The younglings puffed out their chests proudly.
The members of the Meng Shui Tribe standing nearby couldn’t help but smile broadly.
Jian Mo rubbed his forehead in exasperation. It seemed being too familiar with the younglings wasn’t always a good thing.
If he weren’t so close to them, they might not have noticed he hadn’t left the tribe and wouldn’t have brought people to disturb him while he was still in bed.
He decided he needed to assign the younglings some lessons. They had to learn how to temper their enthusiasm, or he’d never get to sleep in again.
Thanks for the chapter!
