Jian Mo grabbed the River Velvet Beast by the scruff and lifted it up.
The River Velvet Beast was clearly a youngling, a fluffy ball resembling a dandelion. It looked bigger than it was—there wasn’t even two liang of meat on it.
No wonder Chirpy had been keeping it alive for now.
Jian Mo tossed the River Velvet Beast into the animal shed housing the long-tailed birds. “Alright, let’s try raising it. If it doesn’t make it, don’t blame me.”
Whether Chirpy understood this or not was unclear. It was crouched with its rear sticking up, staring intently through a window carved into the shed wall.
Jian Mo patted it. “Stop staring and let’s go. Time to hunt and forage.”
Chirpy glanced at Jian Mo, then turned back to look at the shed. “Chirp!”
Now that the wind had finally died down, Jian Mo had packed an extra basket and several bags.
Wu Jiong shifted into his beast form, allowing Jian Mo to ride on his back as they headed out.
When Chirpy saw the giant wolf running ahead, it gave itself a running start, flapped its wings, and took off into the air to follow them. “Chirp chirp!”
They made their way to the eastern mountains to gather supplies.
The eastern mountains were less frequented, offering the chance to collect more food.
Just as Jian Mo had hoped, they gathered a significant amount of mushrooms. The recent storm had brought rain, and the mushrooms had grown plump and enticing. Even if they couldn’t eat them all right away, drying them for later use was a great option.
In addition to mushrooms, they collected a variety of wild greens and tubers.
Wu Jiong also managed to catch two birds and a long-headed beast.
Perhaps because no one had been in the area for several days, their haul was especially bountiful.
By the time the sun was still high in the sky, their two baskets and five cloth bags were filled to capacity.
With no room to collect more, they decided to return home and come back tomorrow. They noted the locations of various wild greens and mushrooms, planning to gather them directly next time.
On the way back, they encountered Qing Kuo and his group.
Qing Kuo’s team also collected a large amount of food. However, the all-sub-beastman group was struggling under the weight of their haul.
The giant wolf slowed its pace.
Jian Mo understood immediately. “Why don’t you carry some of their load back? I’ll walk from here and stretch my legs.”
The giant wolf nudged Jian Mo gently with its snout. “I’ll take this back first and come back for you later.”
Jian Mo waved him off. “No need, it’s just a short walk. I’ll be fine.”
Qing Kuo’s group, clearly exhausted, didn’t resist the offer of help. “These grass buds are so heavy. With the rain we’ve had, the ground was covered in them. Tonight, the whole tribe should be able to enjoy grass bud soup.”
As Jian Mo helped tie the grass buds onto the giant wolf, he examined them closely. The fresh, tender grass buds were sweet and crisp, perfect for soup or stir-frying.
He smiled. “They’d go great in meatball soup too.”
Qing Kuo agreed. “Yes, or fishball soup, with some chopped green onions sprinkled on top.”
By the time they finished securing the goods to the giant wolf, it nodded at them before sprinting back to the village.
Jian Mo carried an extra bag of supplies for Qing Kuo’s group and chatted with them along the way. He brought up Chirpy’s River Velvet Beast. “Has anyone ever raised a River Velvet Beast before? Are they easy to take care of?”
Qing Kuo was unsure. “I don’t think so.”
He glanced at the others.
Ye Luo responded confidently. “No one has. River Velvet Beasts are too small. Even when fully grown, they’re only enough for one meal, so no one thinks it’s worth the effort.”
Jian Mo asked, “But they’re delicious. Wouldn’t someone raise one just because it’s tasty?”
Ye Luo shrugged. “It’s not worth it for just one meal.”
Jian Mo thought about the local productivity levels and conceded that the logic made sense.
Ye Luo added, “Are you planning to raise one? River Velvet Beasts are omnivorous. They eat grass, fish, and clams. They seem pretty easy to care for.”
Jian Mo nodded. “Since Chirpy already caught one, we might as well give it a try. We’ve got an animal shed ready, so it shouldn’t be too troublesome.”
The group continued chatting as they walked toward the village.
Before they reached it, they saw a group of little ones fighting on the other side of the river.
Another large group of little ones was squatting nearby, forming a wide circle and cheering loudly as they watched the brawl.
If it weren’t for the tufts of fur flying in the scuffle, Jian Mo might have thought they were just playing.
Despite their small size, the little ones were fighting fiercely.
Just as Jian Mo and his group were about to call out, an energetic sub-beastman cub grabbed the three tails of a small red Zhen Beast and performed a clean over-the-shoulder throw.
“Bang!”
The red Zhen Beast hit the ground so hard that dust flew into the air.
Qing Kuo couldn’t hold back any longer. He drew a deep breath and shouted from his core, “What are you doing?!”
The little ones froze mid-action, then, realizing adults were watching, panicked and scattered like frightened birds and beasts. “Awooo!”
The He’an Tribe had prepared themselves for some scuffles when they took in so many young ones for lessons, but they hadn’t expected the fights to get this intense.
“A full-blown brawl!” Qing Kuo fumed. “These little ones are really something.”
Ye Luo added, “And they dare to run after fighting.”
Qing Kuo let out a cold laugh. “What’s the point of running? I’ve memorized their faces. I’m going to drag them back here.”
Jian Mo quickly held him back. “Don’t go. They’re Ban Jiu’s friends. If you go, Ban Jiu might have a hard time making friends. Let De Jiang handle it. Isn’t it his turn to teach this afternoon? He’s the one teaching combat skills.”
Qing Kuo relented. “Fine, I’ll let De Jiang know.”
The commotion had already reached the tribe, and De Jiang had heard it too.
After hearing Qing Kuo’s report, De Jiang frowned and went off to find the culprits.
It didn’t take long for the tall, stern De Jiang to pull out the two ringleaders of the brawl—a young bear cub and a little red Zhen Beast.
Neither cub dared to say a word, looking thoroughly dejected.
Behind De Jiang trailed a crowd of young ones, some in human form and others in beast form. They were the fighters and spectators, all rounded up.
De Jiang spoke coldly, “I’ll be calling your parents.”
The little ones exchanged uneasy glances. The two ringleaders in De Jiang’s grip began to squirm.
The bear cub tried pleading, “Teacher De Jiang—”
De Jiang cut him off. “I’ve already sent someone to fetch them. We’ll settle this today so it doesn’t affect tomorrow’s lessons.”
The little red Zhen Beast covered its face with its paws in despair.
Qing Kuo sneered, “You’re worried now? Too late.”
The little red Zhen Beast muttered, “It’s not—”
The sight of these little ones engaging in a group brawl was both exasperating and amusing, and the entire tribe came out to watch.
Even the beastmen from other tribes, who had come to pick up their young ones after lessons, gathered to see the commotion.
With so many tribes sending their young ones to study together, the He’an Tribe felt the need to uphold a proper academic atmosphere. No one spoke up in defense of the misbehaving cubs.
De Jiang made the little ones assume horse stances as punishment. The bear cub and red Zhen Beast were placed in the front row.
Whether in human or beast form, the young ones soon began sweating under the strain.
Jian Mo watched from the side as little cats, wolves, and foxes balanced awkwardly on their hind legs in slightly crouched positions. It was unnatural and adorable, making him rub his forehead in sympathy.
These little ones were both pitiful and endearing.
However, forcing them to hold horse stances in beast form seemed overly harsh. Jian Mo resolved to suggest a different form of punishment next time.
But for now, there was no changing it. De Jiang was already disciplining them, and interfering would only confuse the little ones.
As the young ones held their stances, Jian Mo checked their injuries.
Their fights hadn’t caused significant harm. Most of them had minor bruises and small cuts, which were easily treated with some ointment.
After treating their injuries, Jian Mo stood back and joined the crowd watching the spectacle.
Chirpy, who had returned from foraging, hovered at the edge of the crowd. It seemed curious about its little friends but too wary of De Jiang to approach, so it crouched quietly on the outskirts.
The He’an Tribe’s beastmen personally ran to fetch the parents of the bear cub and the red Zhen Beast. By the time the sun set, the parents had finally arrived.
However—
“These two are yours?! Both of them?!”
Qing Kuo stared wide-eyed at the bear cub and red Zhen Beast.
It turned out the two cubs were brothers from the same family!
The fathers of the two cubs exchanged a weary glance and nodded in unison.
The cubs’ sub-beastman father, Jing Qin, explained, “They’re twins. One takes after me in beast form, and the other takes after their beastman father.”
Their beastman father, Kong Fan, confirmed, “Yes, they’re biological brothers.”
Everyone was astonished.
De Jiang frowned. “Sibling fights are even more serious.”
Kong Fan sighed. “It’s our failing as parents. We’re very sorry.”
He turned to the cubs. “What’s going on with you two?”
The cubs were visibly afraid of their father.
The bear cub protested, “Xing Yan hit me first!”
The red Zhen Beast retorted, “Ri Can insulted me first!” (TN: Ri Can is a name)
The bear cub countered, “I only said a few words, and he hit me!”
The red Zhen Beast shot back, “I accidentally hit him, and he called others to gang up on me!”
The two cubs grew increasingly agitated, puffing up their chests, arching their backs, glaring at each other, and clawing the air. It seemed they were about to start another fight.
Their sub-beastman father, Jing Qin, couldn’t take it anymore and smacked them both. “Quiet!”
Qing Kuo couldn’t help but ask, “You all live together, right?”
Jing Qin sighed. “We do, but they’ve been at each other’s throats since they were little. We forbid fighting at home, so they’ve taken their quarrels outside.”
Kong Fan added, “They haven’t been punished enough. We’ll intensify their discipline at home.”
The parents’ expressions were so weary that Jian Mo could almost feel their exhaustion.
Behind him, Zhou Fu muttered, “Looks like having more kids isn’t always a good thing.”
Jian Mo nodded in agreement.
Regardless of whether the two cubs were siblings, their fighting needed to be addressed.
De Jiang spoke sternly with their parents and scolded the two cubs. He warned that if it happened again, they would no longer be allowed to attend lessons.
The two cubs tucked their tails in fear.
De Jiang then turned to educate the other young ones.
As they squatted in horse stances and listened to the lecture, the other young ones all vowed never to do it again.
The disciplinary session stretched into the evening before the young ones were finally sent back to their respective tribes.
Just as a beastman from the Xiong Ying Tribe was about to carry a young one home, Jian Mo quickly stopped him. “Xue Yue, tell your tribe leader to come by tomorrow—I have something to discuss.”
Xue Yue asked, “Should I let him know what it’s about?”
Jian Mo replied, “It’s about planting. Just tell him to come, and he’ll understand.”
Xue Yue nodded. “Got it.”
The beastmen carried their young ones home on their backs.
Wu Jiong turned to De Jiang. “It’s unrealistic to expect the little ones never to fight. We should build a sparring platform in the tribe. That way, if they want to fight, they can do it there.”
De Jiang didn’t seem surprised. “Like the sparring platform at the Meng Shui Tribe? That’s more of a grand arena for organized duels.”
Wu Jiong nodded. “Exactly. We still have leftover stone materials from before.”
De Jiang asked, “Where would we build it?”
Wu Jiong suggested, “Let’s hold a meeting and decide.”
Qing Kuo chimed in, “We have some free time today. I’ll gather everyone for a meeting.”
Jian Mo hadn’t expected them to act so quickly. By the time dinner rolled around, representatives from each family had already gathered for the meeting.
Qing Kuo and the others had shortlisted three potential sites: a clearing in the tribe, the open area in front of the back mountain, and a riverside clearing.
With a tribe of just over three hundred people, decisions were made efficiently. The group conducted a show of hands, with Jian Mo—the only literate person—recording the votes.
Each person could vote for only one of the three options.
During the meeting, Qing Kuo briefly outlined the pros and cons of each location.
The decision was made quickly, with about 70% of the votes favoring the riverside clearing.
Someone joked from the crowd, “The riverside is close to the clinic. If anyone gets injured during a spar, it’ll be convenient to get them treated.”
The comment drew a wave of laughter.
That said, the riverside’s spaciousness and scenic beauty made it an excellent choice.
Jian Mo listened as the group enthusiastically finalized the location. They then seriously discussed the construction timeline and materials still needed. As Jian Mo continued to record the details, his hand paused momentarily.
Noticing this, Wu Jiong leaned closer and asked in a low voice, “What are you thinking about?”
Jian Mo turned to Wu Jiong and replied in a similarly soft tone, “I’m thinking that if we manage to build this sparring platform, not only will we host the Summer Harvest Festival this year, but we might also hold the Hunting Tournament here.”
Jian Mo added, “Our tribe might genuinely reach the same status as the Meng Shui Tribe.”
In terms of overall strength and influence, the He’an Tribe was indeed catching up rapidly.
Thanks for the chapter! Sadly, sibling fight, especially when they have opposing personalities. The trick is not to let the fights last & fester.
