Transmigrated to the Beastman World as a Veterinarian – CH124

New Ears

Jian Mo quickly realized that when the Bai Zhi Tribe and the Rainrise Tribe argued, it was all bark and no bite. Their attacks on each other were childishly petty, and they never escalated into real fights.

—At most, their squabbles might lead to some fur flying, but they never drew blood. For beastmen, this was almost unthinkable.

Jian Mo couldn’t help but feel that this was just part of the quirky relationship between the two tribes.

After a day of running around, Jian Mo returned feeling a bit drained.

After dinner, Wu Jiong went to attend to matters concerning the He’an Tribe. Meanwhile, Jian Mo lay on his bed with a pen in hand, jotting down notes about the past two days. He had planned to wait for Wu Jiong to return before sleeping, but halfway through writing, exhaustion overtook him. He stuffed his pen and paper into his pack, curled up under the animal hide, and quickly fell asleep.

Jian Mo had no idea when Wu Jiong returned, nor did he wake up the next morning until quite late.

When Jian Mo finally got up, Wu Jiong was already gone—likely off with Yun Long and the others to plan the day’s itinerary.

Yawning, Jian Mo went to freshen up but felt a little lightheaded and unwell. Touching his forehead, he realized he had a fever.

It was probably due to the past few days of overexertion.

He decided to brew some herbal medicine. Retrieving some dried herbs, he intended to ask someone from the Snowfoot Tribe to help prepare a decoction.

After drinking the medicine, he figured he could rest on Wu Jiong’s back for a while, and the fever would subside.

As Jian Mo was thinking this, a sub-beastman spotted him and walked over to check his forehead.

Startled, Jian Mo instinctively pulled back. Looking up, he recognized the sub-beastman as Ah Meng from the Xiong Ying Tribe, who also happened to be Ban Ming’s partner.

Ah Meng remarked, “Doctor Jian Mo, your face looks a little flushed.”

Meeting Ah Meng’s concerned gaze, Jian Mo raised his herbal pouch and offered a raspy laugh. “I have a slight fever. I’ll be fine after drinking some medicine.”

Before Jian Mo could say more, Ah Meng took the herb pouch from his hand. “I’ll brew it for you. Sit down and rest for a while. Should we let the others know?”

Jian Mo, feeling unsteady, sat on a tree stump nearby. “No need. I’ll be fine in a bit.”

Ah Meng nodded. “Wait here. I’ll come back once the medicine is ready. Should I let it boil a little longer?”

Having seen Jian Mo treat his father’s injured leg with herbs before, Ah Meng was experienced in decocting medicine.

Jian Mo nodded. “Thank you.”

Ah Meng smiled and left to get to work.

Sitting on the stump, Jian Mo soon felt drowsy. Curling up slightly, he rested his head on his knees and dozed off.

The morning breeze was chilly, and in his sleep, he instinctively curled tighter.

He wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep when he felt someone touching his forehead. He startled awake, only to see Wu Jiong crouched in front of him, looking concerned and worried.

“I’m fine,” Jian Mo croaked. “I’ve probably just been overworked the past few days. A bit of medicine and some rest, and I’ll be good.”

Wu Jiong gently touched his forehead with his lips. “You’ve never been out for so long before. This was my oversight.”

Jian Mo gripped Wu Jiong’s hand. “Really, I’m okay.”

Soon, others began to gather around, their concern evident:

“Brother Jian Mo, why don’t you stay here for a couple of days and rest properly?”

“Yes, Doctor Jian Mo, stay in our tribe and recover before heading out.”

“You’re burning up. Traveling in this state is too risky—what if the wind makes it worse?”

The voices came from people of the He’an Tribe, the Meng Shui Tribe, and the Snowfoot Tribe, all trying to persuade him.

Just then, Ah Meng returned with the brewed medicine.

The medicine had cooled slightly, and when Jian Mo tried to hold the bowl, his trembling hands couldn’t keep it steady.

Wu Jiong took the spoon and carefully fed him the medicine.

Unable to bear the prolonged bitterness and astringency of sipping it spoon by spoon, Jian Mo waited until the medicine was just warm, then downed it in one go.

Jian Mo wanted to continue traveling with the group, but everyone’s reasoning was sound, and he didn’t have the energy to refute them all. In the end, he agreed to stay behind.

Wu Jiong decided to stay and take care of Jian Mo, assigning members of the He’an Tribe to move ahead with the larger group.

Although the He’an Tribe members were reluctant to leave, Wu Jiong insisted they stick to the plan, asking Yun Long to keep an eye on them.

Left with no choice, they agreed. Wu Jiong assured them that they would catch up to the main group in a couple of days once Jian Mo recovered.

With everything settled, Bei Ya insisted on staying to help care for Jian Mo.

Jian Mo saw the earnestness in Bei Ya’s face and gently pushed him away. “I’ll be fine. My partner will take care of me. It’ll be more convenient for you to go with the group.”

Bei Ya protested, “I can brew medicine and take over from Chief Wu Jiong if he gets tired. I can look after both of you.”

Jian Mo smiled faintly. “Wu Jiong is very experienced at brewing medicine.”

Bei Ya was adamant. “Let me stay. I’m not interested in the trade caravan anyway, so I can focus on looking after you.”

Unable to persuade him otherwise, Jian Mo finally relented. “Alright, then let’s all stay here for two days and set off together.”

Bei Ya nodded happily and went to inform his companions.

The He’an Tribe members, realizing they couldn’t stay while Bei Ya and his companions could, were somewhat disgruntled.

Wu Jiong quickly put a stop to any complaints, and Ban Ming’s group resignedly prepared to leave.

Hearing that Jian Mo was ill, members of the Bai Zhi Tribe and Yu Qi tribe also came over to offer help, assuring the He’an Tribe members that Jian Mo would be well cared for.

Jian Mo was touched by their concern, finding the situation both amusing and heartwarming.

After much fussing, the caravan finally prepared to depart.

Before leaving, Yun Long came by to check on Jian Mo and Wu Jiong. “Doctor Jian Mo, take your time recovering in the Snowfoot Tribe. If you can’t rejoin us, don’t push yourself. We’ll meet up with you on our return. If you want to come out again, there’s always next year. Your health is the priority.”

Jian Mo nodded. “Thank you.”

After the main group left, Wu Jiong helped Jian Mo back to their quarters to rest.

Chirpy, sensing that Jian Mo was unwell, refused to go out to play and insisted on keeping watch outside their temporary stilted hut.

By midday, Jian Mo’s fever hadn’t subsided—instead, it had worsened.

Wu Jiong hurriedly went to brew a fresh batch of fever-reducing medicine, while members of the Snowfoot Tribe set up a fire to prepare a soft, easily digestible fish porridge for Jian Mo. They encouraged him to eat more and regain his strength.

The porridge, cooked to a tender consistency with pearl millet, was mild in flavor. Jian Mo forced himself to take a couple of sips but quickly lost his appetite. Unable to drink anymore, he felt bad about wasting the Snowfoot Tribe’s kindness and didn’t want Wu Jiong to notice and worry about the leftover porridge.

Pushing open the door, he decided to give the porridge to Chirpy.

Chirpy was lying near the doorway. When it saw Jian Mo emerge, its big eyes fixed on him, and it let out a pitiful, soft cry: “Chirr.”

Jian Mo walked over, gently patted Chirpy’s head, and said, “Good Chirpy, help me finish this bowl of porridge.”

The porridge had already cooled. Jian Mo coaxed Chirpy to open its mouth, intending to pour it directly in.

For the first time, Chirpy wasn’t interested in food. It closed its mouth tightly and refused to drink. “chirp.”

In his raspy voice, Jian Mo repeated softly, “Be good, do me this favor.”

After he repeated it two or three times, Chirpy seemed to finally understand. It opened its mouth reluctantly, letting Jian Mo pour the porridge in. Fortunately, chirpy’s mouth was large enough to manage the bowlful with ease.

In his feverish state, Jian Mo didn’t think to use a leaf or a ladle to help pour the porridge more carefully. Instead, he simply tipped the bowl straight into its mouth.

After Chirpy finished drinking, Jian Mo stroked its head again. “Good Chirpy.”

That it understood perfectly. Chirpy stood up and rubbed its large head affectionately against Jian Mo.

Jian Mo, used to being nudged by Chirpy, instinctively pushed it away to avoid it’s shedding fur on his face. However, Chirpy must have nudged him in the wrong spot this time because Jian Mo suddenly felt a sharp pain and soreness at the top of his head. Unable to stay on his feet, he crouched down and held his head. “Hiss…”

Chirpy grew anxious and pawed at him lightly. “Chirr!”

It circled him twice, then abruptly ran a few steps, flapped its wings, and took off.

Jian Mo, still reeling from the pain, couldn’t even think about stopping it.

After a while, he gingerly reached up to touch his head. To his surprise, he felt two soft, cool, newly grown patches of flesh.

Completely bewildered, Jian Mo froze. He carefully felt the spots again, finding them less painful than before.

Just as he was trying to figure out what was on his head, a giant wolf came sprinting toward him, with Chirpy circling overhead.

The wolf skidded to a halt in front of him, quickly transforming back into Wu Jiong, who hastily grabbed his animal-hide skirt from the ground and wrapped it around his waist. “What’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Let me see.”

Frowning, Jian Mo looked at Wu Jiong and said, “It feels like something’s growing on my head. Can you check? I can’t see it.”

Wu Jiong hurried over, gently cupped Jian Mo’s face, and examined him closely. “It looks like… new ears.”

“That’s impossible,” Jian Mo said reflexively, touching the sides of his face. “My ears are still here!”

Jian Mo had seen other sub-beastmen transform their ears into beast ears, but their original ears simply changed shape. He had never seen anyone grow an extra pair of ears on their head.

Suspicious, Jian Mo asked, “Are you sure?”

Wu Jiong rasped, “Yes. They’re soft, small, cat-like ears.”

Tentatively tracing the outlines of the soft shapes, Jian Mo realized they indeed felt like cat ears. Doubtful, he asked, “Is this normal? Do sub-beastmen ever grow new ears like this?”

Wu Jiong replied calmly, “You’re not an ordinary sub-beastman.”

“But even extraordinary sub-beastmen should follow the basic laws of sub-beastman biology, right?” Jian Mo muttered as he fiddled with the new ears, trying to make them stand upright. However, no matter what he did, they stayed floppy. “These ears feel like those of a folded-ear cat. Could my awakened sub-beastman lineage be a folded-ear cat?”

Wu Jiong didn’t know what a folded-ear cat was but was confident this wasn’t Jian Mo’s lineage. “You may have awakened a spirit cat lineage. Once you’re feeling better in a couple of days, we’ll go see Qing Kuo for confirmation.”

Wu Jiong then took hold of Jian Mo’s wrists. “Stop touching them. Your ears are red and swollen.”

“Fine,” Jian Mo relented, though he still found it strange.

Wu Jiong kissed his forehead and said, “It’s not strange. They’re lovely. Sub-beastmen have all kinds of beast-like traits. Didn’t you admire the wings of the Bai Zhi Tribe’s sub-beastmen?”

Feeling groggy from the fever, Jian Mo thought for a moment and nodded. “That’s true.”

After Jian Mo’s transformation, members of the Snowfoot Tribe, Bai Zhi Tribe, and Rainrise Tribe all came to see him. They reassured him, suggesting that the ears might not be fully developed yet and would grow properly over time.

The tribes also brought an assortment of delicious meats, nuts, and wild vegetables, encouraging Jian Mo to eat well and rest.

While Jian Mo wasn’t surprised by the gifts from the Bai Zhi and Yu Qi tribes, he was taken aback by the offerings from the Snowfoot Tribe. Their relationship had been primarily transactional, with little personal connection.

The Snowfoot Tribe representative said earnestly, “Development is a crucial matter for every beastman and sub-beastman. You need to eat well and take care of yourself, Doctor Jian Mo.”

Jian Mo, his voice still hoarse, thanked them. “I understand. Thank you.”

The Snowfoot Tribe member emphasized again, “Don’t mention it. If you need anything, just let us know. We’ll help however we can.”

With everyone determined to let Jian Mo rest, they forbade him from doing anything and confined him to bed.

Wu Jiong handled Jian Mo’s personal needs, while Bei Ya helped with other tasks. Jian Mo found himself suddenly idle.

His fever hadn’t subsided, and his new ears remained floppy and unresponsive. No matter how he lay in bed, he couldn’t get comfortable, and the irritation began to weigh on him.

The additional pair of ears made his hearing exceptionally sharp, amplifying every sound outside and flooding his senses. Unable to block out the noise, Jian Mo felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Wu Jiong kissed him, comforted him, and even massaged him, but nothing alleviated Jian Mo’s discomfort. In the end, all he could do was hold Jian Mo close and gently coax him to sleep.

Wu Jiong said, “It might take some time to adjust.”

Jian Mo sighed. “I really can’t get used to this. I don’t want to stay in bed anymore. Can I lie on the small platform outside?”

With his heightened hearing, it didn’t matter whether he stayed inside or went outside—he could hear every sound, wanted or not. He figured that being outdoors, basking in the sun, and looking at the snowy mountains, might lift his spirits.

Wu Jiong agreed, wrapping Jian Mo in a soft animal-hide blanket and carrying him to the small platform outside. Transforming into his wolf form, Wu Jiong let Jian Mo lie on his back.

The giant wolf’s body was warm, soft, and covered with smooth fur. Lying there, Jian Mo finally felt a little more comfortable.

The weather was beautiful, with bright sunshine and a sky full of fluffy clouds. Below, a turquoise lake sparkled, and a group of small creatures resembling otters practiced catching fish.

These little animals were slimmer and more agile than otters, with adorably round faces and big, fluffy tails. They swam back and forth in the water, an endearing sight.

Jian Mo watched them for a while, then lazily waved a hand, beckoning them over.

The otter-like creatures obediently swam over and chirped, “Brother Jian Mo, what’s up?”

Propped up on Wu Jiong’s back, Jian Mo pointed to the area beneath the platform and drawled, “There are some big fish swimming noisily down there. Can you help catch them for me?”

The little creatures looked skeptical, their eyes wide with disbelief. “Brother Jian Mo, you’re joking, right? How could you know there are big fish down there?”

Jian Mo pointed to the pair of cat ears newly grown on his head. “I heard them. Can you check for me?”

Although doubtful, the little creatures still dove underwater to investigate at his request.

Moments later, one resurfaced, holding a large, plump fish in its mouth. Excitedly, it exclaimed, albeit muffled, “There really are big fish down there!”

More of the creatures quickly followed, each emerging with a fish. They exclaimed excitedly:

“No wonder we couldn’t find any fish before—they were all hiding down there!”

“There’s a whole nest of fish down there! As soon as we dived, we blocked them in!”

“Brother Jian Mo, you’re amazing!”

Even the larger otters, who had been standing guard while the little ones hunted, raised their heads in surprise. “Doctor Jian Mo, your hearing is incredible!”

Jian Mo sighed. “It’s been giving me a headache lately.”

Wu Jiong nuzzled his head lightly and said softly, “You’ll feel better in a couple of days.”

Seeing this, the large otters began herding the little ones farther away. “Let’s move over to the other side of the lake so we don’t disturb you.”

Jian Mo waved at them. “Thanks.”

True to their word, the otters swam to the far side of the lake.

Watching them, Jian Mo suddenly remembered something. “Doesn’t Zhou Fu have otter bloodline traits?”

He recalled that Zhou Fu’s round face, round eyes, and fair skin didn’t quite match the typical appearance of sub-beastmen from the He’an Tribe.

Wu Jiong replied in a low voice, “He does. His father is a sub-beastman from the Snowfoot Tribe.”

Jian Mo was amazed. “So the tribes in this area have always interacted. I don’t think I’ve met his father. Is he traveling?”

Wu Jiong explained, “Both his parents live in the Xiong Ying Tribe. Zhou Fu only moved to the He’an Tribe after becoming mates with Jiu Yin.”

Jian Mo said thoughtfully, “I never knew. Zhou Fu has so many friends—I just assumed he was originally from the He’an Tribe.”

The two chatted for a while before Jian Mo dozed off again.

After drinking the fever-reducing medicine, Jian Mo’s fever gradually subsided. Though still slightly feverish, it wasn’t as severe as in the morning, and he hoped he would feel even better the next day.

Feeling optimistic, Jian Mo decided to join everyone for dinner that evening. Wearing a hat to cover his new ears, he ventured outside.

Chirpy was still waiting nearby. Seeing that Jian Mo seemed better, it hopped around excitedly. Even Ying Ao looked visibly pleased.

Jian Mo patted Chirpy, then Ying Ao. “Thank you both. I’m fine now. Let’s eat.”

“Chirp!” Chirpy cried happily.

Jian Mo smiled. “Really, I’m fine now.”

Together, he and Wu Jiong went to dinner.

To accommodate Jian Mo’s recovery, the Snowfoot Tribe had prepared a light soup and tender fish stew, both easy to digest.

Having slept for most of the day, Jian Mo found it refreshing to sit among the group and listen to their lively conversations. Though the ambient noise was still overwhelming, as long as no one shouted, it wasn’t unbearable.

As Jian Mo listened, a sound caught his attention. He turned to look at the lake.

To his surprise, Chirpy and Ying Ao had somehow ended up in the water, swimming joyfully with the little otters.

It wasn’t surprising that Ying Ao could swim—he seemed like the kind of all-capable winged beast who could master anything.

But seeing Chirpy, with its large size, not only floating but also paddling the water with its enormous wings, was nothing short of a miracle.

Jian Mo’s eyes sparkled with astonishment.

The Snowfoot Tribe members followed his gaze and burst into laughter when they spotted Chirpy and Ying Ao in the lake. “Your two winged beasts are great swimmers!”

“They’re even better than those Bai Zhi Tribe beastmen when they swim in their beast forms,” another added.

Curious, Jian Mo asked, “They swim in their beast forms?”

The Snowfoot Tribe members laughed heartily. “Yes, they had a swimming competition with the Yu Qi tribe once. Their strokes were a mess, but the two tribes tied in the end.”

Recalling the competitive nature of the chubby Chirpies, Jian Mo gave them a thumbs-up. “Impressive.”

Jian Mo, after graduating, returns to his small hometown and opens an animal clinic. One night, while he's asleep, he hears a persistent thumping noise on the roof. Assuming it's just a rat, he steps outside with a can of food to lure in a friendly, easily tricked, beautiful kitten. The kitten is indeed stunning, but while Jian Mo is happily hugging and cuddling it, the kitten looks utterly confused. Suddenly, a booming voice interrupts him. Turning around, Jian Mo is startled to find an enormous cat, much larger than himself, standing right behind him. The giant cat glares at Jian Mo with a raspy voice: "Let go of my brother!" Now it's Jian Mo's turn to be confused. As he looks up, he realizes the park, city streets, and cars around him have transformed into forests, snowy mountains, grasslands, and tribal settlements. —He has crossed into a world of beastmen! The only silver lining? He's a veterinarian, so at least his skills are somewhat relevant. Treating animals to treating beastmen... well, with some effort, it’s not entirely impossible. Extra Snippet: One day, Jian Mo and his partner Wu Jiong head out to gather supplies. As they enter the forest, they hear a series of faint, rustling noises. Peeking through the gaps between the leaves, they see a group of fluffy little creatures huddled in a circle, seemingly "complaining" about him. A chubby chick sulks: "Doctor Jian Mo said I overate and have indigestion, so I have to starve for a whole day. Chirp chirp." A little snow leopard with tearful eyes: "Doctor Jian Mo said I have cavities, so I can't eat honey anymore. Waaa." A small beaver sniffles: "Doctor Jian Mo confiscated all my hidden snacks, saying they'd make me sick. I never want to visit his clinic again. Boohoo." A little Pallas's cat glances at its companions and softly squeaks, "But... when I get treated, Doctor Jian Mo always hugs me." The fluffy critters fall silent, lost in thought about Jian Mo. Behind the trees, riding on the back of his partner who has transformed into a giant wolf, Jian Mo listens to the whole conversation: "..." The giant wolf turns to gently lick Jian Mo's newly grown beast ears. "The little ones all came to ask me to put in a good word for them." Blushing from the lick, Jian Mo pushes away the fluffy wolf head, "Pleading won’t help; at most, I'll give them some extra treats to comfort them. And you—stop licking my ears!" Thanks for the update, but it’s a bit confusing how the tribe names keep alternating between Chinese names and inconsistent English names. Whatever program you’re using to translate this clearly can’t stay consistent with that, so maybe worth double checking it yourself.
