Chapter 38: Fated
Si Er, Si Xu, and Yu Beixuan were all assigned to Class One of Year One. In this class, they also ran into an old acquaintance—Lu Taiping.
Lu Taiping was delighted to see the three of them and hurried over to greet them.
“Classmate Si Er, Classmate Si Xu, and Classmate Yu—I haven’t seen you for days. I missed you all so much!”
“What bad luck. I’ve been wandering all over the academy these past few days and went into so many shops, yet I didn’t run into you even once.”
The more Lu Taiping thought about it, the more regretful he felt.
“And Classmate Si Xu and I live in the same dormitory area, but we still never ran into each other.”
They both lived in the Honor Students’ High-Level Dormitory Area. Although the environment wasn’t as good as the Elite Students’ Top-Tier Dormitory Area, each person still had their own small courtyard. The courtyards were just smaller, and the houses weren’t as exquisite or beautiful as those in the top-tier area.
Even though Si Xu and Lu Taiping both lived in the high-level dorm area, their courtyards were at opposite ends—one south, one north. If timing wasn’t right, it really was hard to meet.
After all, there were exits at both the north and south ends, and their usual routes rarely overlapped.
Si Xu felt it was perfectly normal not to run into each other and smiled. “Then it must really have been bad luck.”
Si Er also smiled and nodded, though inwardly he couldn’t help but complain.
Of course you wouldn’t run into us! Why does Classmate Lu wander around the academy for days at a time?
Because when we shop, we’re goal-oriented. One day is enough.
But when Classmate Lu shops, he always gets lost. One day is never enough!
When he wants to buy furniture, he gets lost and ends up at the flower shop. When he wants to buy paint, he somehow wanders into a medicinal herb store.
When he wants to buy curtains, he even gets lost into other dormitory districts…
His getting lost feels almost metaphysical. If he wanted furniture and got lost into a paint shop, that would at least help!
But no—he always strays into completely unrelated stores. Sometimes the entire day is wasted.
Sigh. Classmate Lu’s situation is really worrying. If he ends up getting lost straight to the two male leads like in the original story, what’s the difference between that and losing his way on the road to the Underworld?
I wonder if there are spirit beasts that can automatically navigate. If there are, we absolutely have to get one for Classmate Lu.
Oh? There actually are?
Azure Candle Night Fireflies, Guiding Bees, Tracking Butterflies, Skyfaring Geese, and Cloud Doves can all do that? But their ranks seem kind of low.
Ohhh, besides soul contracts, there are ordinary contracts too? So it’s fine to contract lower-grade ones?
Lu Taiping pricked up his ears, listening carefully to Si Er’s inner thoughts. How can those direction-finding spirit beasts be described as low-rank? To him, they were the strongest navigation systems imaginable!
He wondered if the academy sold them. He absolutely had to get one.
The four quickly took their seats. Si Er and Si Xu naturally sat together. Yu Beixuan had no choice but to sit behind Si Er, and Lu Taiping sat beside Yu Beixuan.
Yu Beixuan was used to being alone and wasn’t quite accustomed to having a desk mate.
But after thinking it over, he said nothing.
Since he had chosen campus life, desk mates and team assignments would be common. He should get used to it early.
Besides, Lu Taiping’s personality wasn’t annoying. They could try getting along.
Still… if only he could sit beside Si Er.
After sitting in the classroom, Si Er felt as though he had returned to a university campus. The atmosphere was incredibly immersive.
But once the instructor entered, it suddenly felt like middle school again.
“My name is Wu He. I’m your history instructor and homeroom teacher. If you have any questions in the future, you can come to me.”
“Even if I can’t solve them, I can recommend the appropriate instructor.”
“Now, please introduce yourselves in order of your student numbers. Tell us your age, attribute, hobbies…”
“Um… if you don’t mind, you can also mention your sexual orientation. You’re at the age where romantic feelings begin to sprout.”
“It’s better to clarify early, so some classmates don’t pursue the wrong person and suffer unnecessary heartbreak.”
As soon as he said that, many students in the room burst into laughter.
Si Er laughed as well, thinking this teacher was quite interesting.
Instructor Wu He glanced at Si Er, accepted the silent compliment, and thought: This child may be a little odd, but he has good taste.
He was indeed a humorous and charming teacher.
“Alright, now let’s invite Student Number One, Si Er, to come up.”
Si Er’s brain froze for a second. He quickly pulled out his identity card and realized he really was Class One, Number One. He hadn’t paid attention before.
Resigned, he walked up to the front. Every time school started, what he disliked most was self-introductions.
For some reason, even though he was normally cheerful and outgoing, the moment it was time for introductions, he always went blank.
“Hello everyone, my name is Si Er. ‘Si’ as in common, ‘Er’ as in renowned.”
“I’m sixteen this year. I have a light-attribute physique. As for my sexual orientation…”
Si Er scratched his head.
“I’m not sure what my sexual orientation is.”
A handsome young man in the audience raised his hand. “Student Si Er, do you currently have a partner? Have you ever liked anyone?”
“No.”
“Wooo!”
Cheers immediately erupted from the audience.
After all, a light-attribute physique was extremely rare. It possessed the strongest purification ability and was highly sought after on the Ten Thousand Beasts Continent.
Or rather, because it was so rare, it was the most sought-after physique on the continent—without exception.
Si Er was good-looking and talented, which made him even more popular in the academy.
One could say he was like a piece of Tang Monk’s flesh—many people wanted to take a bite.
But biting him outright might get them beaten to death, so they’d have to choose a reasonable method: pursue him properly first, then bring him home.
Yu Beixuan instantly understood what everyone was cheering for, and his face darkened.
Before Si Er even stepped down, Yu Beixuan had already walked up to the front.
Si Er had originally been nervous, but upon seeing Yu Beixuan, he immediately relaxed.
“Is Student Yu Number Two?”
“Yes.”
Si Er smiled. “Our student numbers are consecutive. We’re quite fated.”
Yu Beixuan nodded in agreement. “One light and one dark. You and I are the two most fated people of this era.”
Si Er raised a brow. “Then what if there’s a third person with light or dark attributes? Are we all fated together?”
Yu Beixuan looked at him and smiled. “Then tell me—is there a third person like that?”
“How would I know? I’m not omniscient.”
After saying that, Si Er returned to his seat.
Forget this era—there wasn’t a third person like this in the previous era or the one before that either.
Me, this cannon fodder, and Classmate Yu, the great villain… we seem to be the only two with these special attributes in this era—one appearing only once in thousands of years.
Looking at it that way… we really are quite fated, aren’t we?
