Chapter 37: School Starts
For a brief moment, Yu Beixuan’s mind went blank, as if something had struck him.
At first, he had simply found Si Er cute and interesting. Si Er kept broadening his horizons and repeatedly refreshing his worldview, making him unable to resist following along just to gain more insight.
But after staying by his side for so long, what he wanted seemed to have gradually changed.
He wanted to see Si Er every day.
He wanted Si Er to be a little closer to him.
He also hoped Si Er would trust him a little more.
The shift in his state of mind had happened so naturally that he hadn’t even noticed it.
So… he had taken a liking to Si Er?
Was it that kind of liking—the kind where you want to find a partner?
Yu Beixuan thought about it for a long time but still wasn’t sure. After all, he had never liked anyone before, nor had he seriously considered such matters.
He had always acted on instinct. He knew that sooner or later, he would understand the answer.
So for now, he decided not to think about it. Better to settle Si Third’s matter first.
Taking a deep breath, Yu Beixuan asked directly, “Father, are you willing to help me?”
City Lord Yu couldn’t help but laugh. The boy hadn’t explicitly denied it—that meant his guess was correct.
It was just that this greenhorn had only just begun to understand love and still had too many things he hadn’t figured out, so he didn’t dare give a clear answer.
City Lord Yu thought to himself: since his son had taken a liking to someone else’s child, of course he would help.
But he couldn’t agree too readily. Otherwise, when would this poor old father ever get to see his son again?
“Xuanxuan, my good boy, you have a seven-day break in a month, right? Will you come home then?”
Yu Beixuan didn’t want to go back. But since his father had asked like this, if he refused, his father might not help him.
Left with no choice, Yu Beixuan squeezed out two words through clenched teeth: “I’ll go.”
“Ah! I knew our Xuanxuan misses home. Don’t worry, your old father will be waiting respectfully!”
City Lord Yu was grinning from ear to ear. He could finally see his son openly and properly.
It seemed that now that his son had a boy he liked, he had more leverage over him.
“Our precious Xuanxuan traveled the world for years and got into Black Tortoise Academy on his own merit. Your old father is extremely gratified!”
His voice carried emotion. He had always worried that his youngest son’s solitary nature would only make him lonelier in the future.
Who would have thought the boy would choose academy life—and even have someone he liked? Perhaps he would grow more outgoing.
If only he could become a sunny, cheerful young man.
“Don’t worry, Xuanxuan. I’ll host a seven-day banquet so the entire Northern Region knows my son has been admitted to Black Tortoise Academy!”
Yu Beixuan hurriedly refused. “No, I think—”
“All right, that’s settled. Time is short. I’m going to investigate your future little boyfriend’s matter now.”
“Don’t worry! Since he’s someone you’ve taken a liking to, he’s one of our Yu family now! Anyone who bullied him will pay the price!”
City Lord Yu rattled off a string of declarations and hung up before Yu Beixuan could finish refusing, pretending he hadn’t heard a thing.
Yu Beixuan: …
On purpose! That old man definitely did it on purpose!
But since he still needed his father’s help to investigate Si Third, he swallowed his frustration for now.
Still… a seven-day banquet?!
Could he really go back after all?
Just imagining the scene made his toes curl in embarrassment.
As the youngest son of one of the Four Great City Lords, he had entered the lowest-ranked of the Four Great Academies. There would certainly be plenty of people waiting to mock him.
If his father made such a grand celebration of it, even more people would laugh.
But whatever. Let them laugh. They wouldn’t dare laugh in front of him.
If anyone mocked him to his face, his father could beat them into facial paralysis—so they wouldn’t be able to smile for years.
In serious cases, they might never smile again.
—
The next day was the official start of term at Black Tortoise Academy.
Si Er got up early and squeezed himself a cup of bitter melon juice—made from the energizing little bitter melons.
For some reason, he had felt especially nervous the night before, mixed with excitement—just like when he first started elementary school.
Products from the system space were almost always top quality.
Though the juice was bitter, it left a faint sweetness aftertaste, and its refreshing effect was immediate.
Since the effect was so strong, Si Er didn’t dare drink too much. After finishing a small cup, he took out two little whirlwind cucumbers and nibbled on them as he headed out.
The remaining bitter melon juice he stored in the freshness cabinet in his farm space, saving it for the next time he felt low on energy.
Just as he stepped out, he happened to run into Yu Beixuan, who was also heading out.
“Good morning, Classmate Yu!”
Si Er waved at him, smiling brightly.
“Classmate Yu looks as handsome as ever today.”
“Morning.”
Yu Beixuan couldn’t help smiling. He felt that Si Er was like another sun.
Unlike the sun in the sky, however, Si Er’s radiance was warm and brilliant without being scorching.
He was someone you could look at directly—and approach.
The two naturally walked side by side. Their soul beasts greeted each other and gathered together to chat.
Now that they were neighbors, of course they should maintain good relations.
After only a few steps, Si Er spotted Si Xu at the corner. Si Xu was hurrying toward him.
“Er’er!”
“Second Brother.”
Now that he had acknowledged his father, calling him “Second Brother” came naturally.
Si Er found something strange.
At first, he had felt especially close to Si Xu and thought it was because of character bias—after all, he had liked Si Xu when reading the book.
But he had been indifferent toward City Lord Si as a character, thinking he wasn’t a qualified father, given how his son had repeatedly suffered at Si Ran’s hands.
Yet after meeting City Lord Si, that sense of closeness had appeared again. He had acknowledged him as father without the slightest pressure, as though he truly were his biological father.
Was this the legendary “power of money”?
Because City Lord Si gave so much, he sincerely called him Dad?
Forget it. Si Er wasn’t someone who liked to trouble himself. If he couldn’t figure something out, he would set it aside and focus on school instead.
Leaning closer to Si Xu, he whispered, “Second Brother, you’re planning to major in potion studies, right?”
Si Xu nodded. “Yes. I have a wood-element constitution and have loved tinkering with herbs since childhood. I happen to have some talent in it.”
“What about you, Er’er? What do you like?”
Si Er shook his head. “I don’t know. I grew up in a remote place and never had exposure to much. I want to try everything.”
Si Xu smiled. “That’s normal. That’s why the academy gives us a month.”
“During this month, you can try all the courses before choosing what you like.”
Si Er’s light attribute and Yu Beixuan’s dark attribute were both extremely rare—so rare that even records about them were scarce. Si Xu couldn’t even offer a practical suggestion.
