Chapter 17: Arriving at the Academy
At Black Tortoise Academy, inside a conference room, the principal and a group of elders and instructors were seated around an enormous crystal ball. As they watched the images displayed within it, their expressions grew increasingly indescribable.
The rarely involved Grand Supreme Elder chuckled. “Who’s that child at the front? Quite charismatic—he actually managed to get everyone to climb the cliff together.”
The Second Grand Supreme Elder disagreed. “The four leading children are fine. But the ones following them? That’s outrageous. Isn’t that just taking a shortcut?”
“They walked a path someone else cleared and avoided risks others handled. What’s the point of their assessment? They weren’t tested at all.”
The Third Grand Supreme Elder smiled. “You can’t say that. At least they still gathered the task items themselves—that takes some ability.”
“And I think it’s good. Not many sign up for our academy to begin with. If we eliminate another batch through assessment, how many will remain?”
“This way, at least more can stay.”
The Second Grand Supreme Elder slammed the table. “Do you even understand ‘better none than inferior ones’?”
The Third Grand Supreme Elder shook his head. “I don’t. I only know that baleful beasts increase every year. If the talent we cultivate can’t keep up, we’ll eventually be devoured and trampled.”
On the Ten Thousand Beasts Continent, baleful energy ran rampant. When exotic beasts absorbed too much of it, they would turn into irrational, slaughter-driven baleful beasts.
Baleful beasts spared no one—neither humans nor other beasts—and were vicious beyond compare. They were enemies to be eliminated by both humanity and exotic beasts alike.
In recent years, baleful energy had grown increasingly severe, and the number of baleful beasts continued to rise. Sooner or later, human strength would fall behind.
The Third Grand Supreme Elder believed the academy’s admissions strategy should change. Aside from the top-tier geniuses, they could also admit some upper-middle and even average-level students.
Geniuses were rare. Strengthening humanity’s backbone could also improve overall survival rates.
The Second Grand Supreme Elder actually agreed in principle. Expanding enrollment wasn’t a problem, and they didn’t need to care about other academies’ gossip.
But the students they admitted shouldn’t be this lazy!
The Fourth Grand Supreme Elder laughed. “They may be a bit lazy—but isn’t that our academy’s characteristic?”
“We’re lazy ourselves. How hardworking can we expect the students to be?”
“If they wanted diligence, they’d go to one of the other three academies. Why would they come here?”
“You say they’re opportunistic—but that shows they have a bit of cleverness and value their lives. I think that’s good.”
The Fifth Grand Supreme Elder nodded in agreement. “You can tell the leading few are outstanding.”
“As long as they maintain their current charisma and ability—”
“—perhaps under their leadership, our academy will ultimately be the one that remains most intact.”
Black Tortoise Academy never cared much about reputation, nor about how many top geniuses it could produce.
What they truly hoped was that every student could remain upright, kind, happy—and stay alive.
The principal felt all the elders made valid points. After discussion, they decided to keep all current students’ results and not eliminate anyone for opportunism.
Originally, the Second Grand Supreme Elder wanted to deduct points from all those who had taken shortcuts—but aside from the four leaders, everyone else had done so.
If everyone lost points, then deducting or not deducting made little difference.

Meanwhile, Si Er, boosted repeatedly by Whirlpool Little Cucumbers, was the first to reach the gates of Black Tortoise Academy.
Soon after, Yu Beixuan arrived riding a black wolf. Si Xu and Lu Taiping followed close behind, arriving almost simultaneously.
That “almost” gave Si Xu a sense of crisis—because he had flown on an eagle, while Lu Taiping had run up carrying a turtle.
Even though the turtle had shrunk, it was said to still be very heavy.
A registration desk was set up at the academy entrance. Students registered in order of arrival.
After registration, they could enter the gates and undergo various tests.
They needed to test each student’s current soul power level, as well as each soul pet’s strength level and talent potential.
This test made Si Er slightly uncomfortable.
I was planning to keep a low profile and coast quietly in this academy for several years. But these tests don’t seem to allow that.
The talent test already made me famous. If they test my strength too…
Yikes. Am I going to have challengers lining up every day?
Just thinking about it scared him.
Sure enough, before long, Si Er broke the device used to measure students’ current soul power.
The device resembled a tube, marked with many gradations at the top and a red strip in the center.
Si Er thought it looked a lot like a mercury thermometer.
To test, students had to grip the lower end and see how high the red strip would rise.
To prevent monstrous geniuses from damaging it, the device could measure up to Soul Sect level.
No matter how gifted new students were, they shouldn’t reach Soul Sect yet… right?
The moment Si Er grasped it, the red strip shot straight to the top.
The instructor assumed the device was faulty and was about to replace it—
When it exploded.
Ah. Definitely broken,the instructor thought.
He nervously looked at Si Er. “Student, is your hand alright?”
“I’m fine.”
Si Er extended his hand. Slender fingers, distinct knuckles, skin white as jade—it looked perfectly unharmed.
Not gonna lie, my hand really does look good!”
“……”
The instructor fell silent.
He had been checking Si Er’s hand and hadn’t noticed that Si Er hadn’t opened his mouth. He thought the student was so narcissistic he praised himself out loud.
Still, this was the first student to arrive—likely a genius.
Geniuses having quirks was normal.
He said nothing and handed Si Er a second device.
That one exploded too.
The instructor began questioning his life choices—but still handed over a third.
Si Er quickly stopped him. “Instructor, perhaps you should switch to a higher-grade device? I heard the higher the grade, the harder they are to break.”
“My surname is Huang.”
Instructor Huang considered it reasonable and nodded. He took out a communication device and messaged a colleague, briefly explaining the situation and requesting a higher-level tester.
The colleague replied instantly, asking for the student’s name.
After hearing “Si Er,” the colleague told him to treat Si Er well and continue testing others—they would arrive shortly.
Instructor Huang was puzzled. Looking up at Si Er’s innocent expression, he sighed.
“Student, the advanced device will take some time. Why don’t you sit for a while?”
He even took out a cushioned chair from his storage pouch and placed it beside the desk.
“Thank you, Instructor Huang.”
Si Er smiled obediently and sat down.
It’s even a soft chair. Quite comfortable. Instructor Huang is pretty nice.
Instructor Huang felt a bit embarrassed. The kid was quite sincere—just a little too blunt.
Even if you’re going to say it, you shouldn’t say it in public like that…
Wait.
He hadn’t opened his mouth just now, had he?
Instructor Huang looked over again. Sure enough, Si Er sat there smiling sweetly, lips pressed together, eyes curiously examining the other testing devices on the table.
Yet the same voice continued echoing outward.
If I can crush the tester, Classmate Yu probably can too. I wonder what level he’s at now.
Though I’m getting a little hungry. If only there were some tea and snacks on this table.
Instructor Huang looked around in confusion. Everyone else seemed perfectly normal.
Could it be that only he could hear this strange voice?
Was he the chosen one?
He shook his head vigorously, tossing the thought away.
If he were truly the chosen one, wouldn’t he be able to hear everyone’s thoughts?
Why only this student’s?
