Chapter 15: Uprooting the Azure Thunder Vines
Lu Taiping hadn’t expected Xiao Bai to move so quickly—and to find so many Stone Fruits at that. He was overjoyed.
This kind of fruit grows inside rocks and is barely affected by baleful energy. Although it’s earth-attributed, anyone who consumes it can benefit from it. It’s considered an excellent low-tier spiritual fruit.
Because the fruit is hard to find, the task only required seven. Lu Taiping had mainly wanted to taste the fruit himself, so he asked the Treasure-Seeking Mouse to find a few extra. He hadn’t expected it to exceed the quota.
Of course Xiao Bai is amazing. Ordinary Treasure-Seeking Mouse are just exceptionally good at finding treasures. They have their own storage space and are great at hiding.
But Xiao Bai is a hybrid—and an excellent one at that. Not only does it have all the advantages of Treasure-Seeking Mice, it also has all the strengths of Gale Mice.
Like wind-like speed, incredibly sharp claws and teeth, and even better stealth than ordinary Treasure-Seeking Mice.
Lu Taiping suddenly understood. A hybrid of a Treasure-Seeking Mouse and a Gale Mouse—no wonder it could resonate with his soul.
He stored away twenty fruits and returned five to Xiao Bai.
“Consider these Xiao Bai’s reward.”
“Chi-chi!”
Tears welling up in its eyes, Xiao Bai pounced into the hollow of his neck and rubbed against him affectionately, making Lu Taiping itch so much he nearly slipped off the cliff.
Fortunately, the Bixi Turtle had been slowly climbing up behind him. If he had fallen, it could have supported him.
Aside from the Stone Fruits, the other spiritual plants on the cliff were fairly easy to find—just difficult to harvest.
The easiest to spot was the Azure Thunder Vine. A massive patch of it covered the cliff wall, so dense that it almost completely blocked the path of the four of them.
The overly lush vines spread lightning over a wide area above. They stopped far from the vines.
“How are we supposed to get through?” Lu Taiping asked nervously. “Classmate Si Xu and Classmate Yu are fine—they can fly over on their eagle and Eagle. But Classmate Si Er and I…”
Si Er smiled. “We’re fine too. We’ll just tear all these Azure Thunder Vines down. That’ll clear the way.”
Lu Taiping felt doubtful. “But—”
“No buts. Let me try first.”
Si Er had great confidence in his strength—after all, he had eaten plenty of Strength Watermelons.
As for getting electrocuted, he subconsciously felt he wouldn’t.
He quickly climbed upward and soon entered the lightning zone. Sure enough, nothing happened to him.
The vines continued crackling and releasing lightning, but when it landed on him, it was only a faint tingling sensation—actually quite pleasant.
He tentatively grabbed a vine. His palm tingled slightly, but there was no painful shock.
Feeling reassured, Si Er gave a strong tug—and uprooted an entire Azure Thunder Vine.
Si Xu and Lu Taiping were stunned. Yu Beixuan, however, was already used to it.
To Yu Beixuan, nothing Si Er did was strange—because Si Er himself was a miracle.
He was a miracle that had descended upon this world; even the world’s rules had to yield to him.
Yu Beixuan felt the thought was exaggerated—but everything that happened around Si Er was just that outrageous.
The vine Si Er had pulled down was very long. It was his first time uprooting one, and he forgot to retract it in time. The vine nearly smacked Lu Taiping in the face.
Seeing Si Er completely unbothered, Lu Taiping assumed the vines here had mutated—looking scary but harmless.
So although he dodged, he did so carelessly, keeping only half an arm’s distance from the vine.
And then…
Fortunately, the Bixi Turtle had climbed directly beneath him in time and held him up firmly. Otherwise, he would have slid straight down the cliff.
He hadn’t fallen—but his hair had all been fried upright. His entire body was blackened, too dreadful to look at.
The Treasure-Seeking Mouse in his arms was quick-witted. Sensing danger, it slipped into the soul-pet space and avoided disaster.
“Classmate Lu, are you alright? That was my fault—I didn’t think it through and ended up shocking you.”
Si Er was startled and immediately began climbing down to heal him. But before he could descend more than two steps, the little mushroom on his head jumped down, landing about a meter away from Lu Taiping.
It expanded several times in midair and began spinning in circles.
As it spun, green light particles fell in rings and merged into Lu Taiping’s body, each speck healing a small patch of his skin.
After about twenty rotations, Lu Taiping’s body returned to normal. His skin regained its wheat-colored tone—only his hair remained standing straight up.
“You’re called Cui Cui, right?” Lu Taiping looked at the mushroom gratefully. “Thank you. You’re the most powerful healing mushroom in the world.”
The little mushroom nodded reservedly, then flew back to the top of Si Er’s head.
Si Er happily patted it and began showering it with sweet praise.
“Wow, Cui Cui, you’re amazing! Truly worthy of being the immortal mushroom king who commands the mushroom horde!”
“You’re the most beautiful and strongest mushroom in the world. With you around, who knows how many casualties can be avoided?”
“Cui Cui, I don’t think I could live without you!”
Cui Cui was very satisfied.
But the Big White Rabbit in his arms, Guagua, was not.
[What about me? Could you live without me then?]
“Of course not!”
Si Er was an equal-opportunity lover—so he had to balance things carefully.
“Cui Cui is my favorite mushroom, and Guagua, you’re my favorite rabbit!”
[So your favorite is still Cui Cui! There are so many kinds of mushrooms, but rabbits—]
“Trust me, the difference isn’t that big.”
In his original world, maybe it would be. But in this world, there were thousands of exotic rabbit species.
Guagua fell silent, comparing the number of mushroom-type spirit plants to rabbit-type beasts it knew. It really was about the same.
“Guagua, you have to understand—Cui Cui heals my physical injuries. It’s an irreplaceable healer.”
“But you’re also a one-of-a-kind gossip master!”
[I suspect you’re mocking me! Are you saying I’m good at eating?]
“No, no—I mean you’re knowledgeable!”
“You’re gifted, well-informed, widely read, learned in past and present! Every day you provide me with endless mental nourishment. You’re my indispensable gossip partner. I can’t live without you!”
The other three on the cliff looked at Si Er with complicated expressions.
They couldn’t hear what Guagua was saying—but from Si Er’s inner thoughts, it was obvious he was coaxing the rabbit.
Still… did he have to be that mushy?
Who coaxes their soul pet like that? It sounded like he was sweet-talking a lover.
Lu Taiping couldn’t help reflecting. Was he not as strong as Si Er because he didn’t flatter his soul pets enough?
The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. He had only praised Xiao Bai once—and Xiao Bai had brought back an impressive haul of Stone Fruits.
Although he had coaxed the Bixi Turtle many times, he had never really praised it. His words weren’t nearly as sweet as Si Er’s. No wonder the turtle was always so lazy and unmotivated.
The black eagle beneath Yu Beixuan also turned its head to glance at him quietly. When it met Yu Beixuan’s disdainful gaze, it immediately turned back around.
Forget it. What was it even thinking?
Did it deserve Yu Beixuan’s flowery praise? It did not.
Soon, Si Er finished coaxing Guagua and resumed his vine-pulling endeavor.
The three watched as he yanked one vine after another—sometimes several at once.
Before long, the entire patch blocking their path had been cleared.
There were still plenty of Azure Thunder Vines farther along both sides of the cliff, but Si Er had no interest in uprooting those.
For the mission items, he only needed the required amount, a little extra as backup, and a small portion for himself.
As long as they weren’t blocking the way, he preferred to let them grow wild.
Besides, if he uprooted them all, what would the other examinees do?
“Classmate Si Er is amazing.”
Lu Taiping was full of envy. Was this the brilliance of a light-attributed genius?
Shining like light itself. If only he could—
Wait. What was that?
Lu Taiping turned and used the Bixi Turtle’s beady eyes as a mirror.
Heavens. His hair was still standing straight up? How had he not noticed?
He couldn’t help asking, “Classmate Si Er, about my hair…”
Si Er scratched his head apologetically. “Sorry—Cui Cui can only heal bodily injuries. It can’t straighten your hair.”
