Chapter 12: The Journey to Find Spirit Plants
After forming a team, the four of them took out their maps and tokens and laid them together for comparison. To their surprise, the four incomplete maps perfectly combined into one complete map—and the overlap between their assigned tasks was remarkably high.
Si Er was a little surprised.
[I didn’t expect my luck to be this good.]
[But I’m just cannon fodder. My luck shouldn’t be this good, right?]
[So is it because of Yu Beixuan’s luck? Big villains usually have a villain’s halo, after all.]
[And sometimes his halo is even stronger than the protagonist’s.]
Si Xu and Lu Taiping couldn’t help glancing at Yu Beixuan a few more times. The latter maintained a sunny and amiable smile the entire time, not looking like an ultimate villain at all.
Lu Taiping even wondered what kind of bizarre novel they were living in.
How could there be morally skewed protagonists, an adorable and radiant villain, and such an innocent yet unlucky cannon-fodder character like himself?
Oh—and someone like Si Er, a cannon fodder with heaven-defying talent and excellent fortune?
With talent and luck like that, how could he still be cannon fodder?
Wasn’t this world a bit too outrageous?
Yu Beixuan interrupted their wandering thoughts and began analyzing calmly.
“According to the map, the closest location to us is Hidden Water Grass—my task and Si Xu’s.”
“Hidden Water Grass grows in Clearwater Pool, about ten li from here.”
“The route appears safe, but the grass itself isn’t easy to find.”
“It’s transparent and can completely conceal itself in water. Those without a water attribute physique will find it difficult to detect.”
Si Er asked, “Wood attribute users should be able to sense it too, right? Si Xu, you can sense plants, can’t you?”
Si Xu shook his head. “Not sure, but we can try.”
“I’m more sensitive to trees. I can hardly sense fungi at all. As for grass, it’s about fifty-fifty.”
“Then let’s go test it first.”
Si Er thought that if Si Xu couldn’t sense it, he could give it a try himself.
[Light attribute seems able to encompass and sense all things. It should work, right?]
Lu Taiping and Si Xu were both shocked.
They hadn’t expected Si Er to possess the rare Light attribute physique—an almost all-purpose constitution in certain aspects.
This was truly genius among geniuses!
Did such a gifted cannon fodder really exist?
They were full of doubts but carefully avoided looking at Si Er, afraid he might sense something off.
The four quickly arrived at Clearwater Pool on their respective mounts—though their mounts were far from uniform.
Si Xu rode a massive green roc flying low above the ground. The roc seemed uncomfortable; it was apparently its first time flying so close to the surface.
Si Er and Yu Beixuan rode a red ostrich and a black wolf, respectively, racing along the ground. Both soul pets were convinced they were faster than the other, so an unspoken competition began.
They ran faster and faster.
Si Xu’s roc could barely keep up.
Lu Taiping’s turtle couldn’t keep up at all.
In the end, Lu Taiping simply hoisted his turtle onto his back and ran himself—it was actually faster that way.
Though lagging behind, he followed the trail of markers Si Er thoughtfully left and eventually reached Clearwater Pool.
By the time he arrived, Si Xu had already harvested two portions of Hidden Water Grass—enough for both himself and Yu Beixuan to complete their task.
Their next destination was Jade Moss Swamp. Si Er’s newly issued task required three Three-Leaf Swamp Lotuses, which conveniently overlapped with one of Yu Beixuan’s tasks.
The four set off again. Lu Taiping, still catching his breath, truly didn’t want to run anymore.
Panting, he asked, “Which of your mounts could lend me a ride for a bit? I really can’t run anymore.”
Si Er enthusiastically replied, “Classmate Lu, hop on! Benben’s back is wide enough.”
“No!” Yu Beixuan refused instinctively.
Si Er was puzzled. “Why not?”
Yu Beixuan couldn’t explain it—but he simply didn’t want to see Si Er sharing a mount with someone else.
So he made up an excuse.
“I’ve never ridden an ostrich before. I’d like to try.”
“How about Classmate Lu rides my Northern Wolf, and I’ll ride the ostrich?”
The black wolf: Oh, so you’re noble and proud. You just want to sit close to that pretty boy and make me carry someone else?
(?????)? Hmph! You think I don’t dare rebel?
…Fine. I really don’t dare. (??`?)
At the same time, Si Er was stunned.
Huh? The big villain wants to share a mount with me?
He panicked for a moment—but then he remembered Yu Beixuan’s cute little tiger fangs and tragic childhood.
Suddenly, he wasn’t panicked anymore.
Well… okay. So far, Yu Beixuan seems easy to get along with. I’m not competing with him for opportunities anyway. It should be fine.
Si Er nodded and scooted forward slightly to make room.
Yu Beixuan jumped directly from the wolf’s back onto the ostrich.
The Wind-Flame Ostrich: Isn’t that a bit rude? Just jumping over like that increases my load, you know?
Still, it was a steady and reliable mount. It quickly stabilized itself without wobbling.
Lu Taiping was delighted. At this point, any mount that could run properly was welcome—especially since Yu Beixuan’s wolf was impressively fast.
He had thought his own Xibi Turtle was already exceptionally quick among turtles.
But being outstanding among turtles was useless.
Compared to the others’ mounts, it was still as slow as a snail. In the end, he had to run himself.
Lu Taiping decided that once his soul power advanced, he would definitely contract a proper high-quality mount.
They soon arrived at Jade Moss Swamp. From afar, they could see a vast patch of Three-Leaf Swamp Lotuses.
Snow-white blossoms contrasted starkly against the pitch-black swamp mud.
Yu Beixuan warned, “There are several Giant-Toothed Crocodiles beneath the swamp. They like to prop up swamp lotuses on their heads to lure soul cultivators. Be careful.”
“Let Qingfeng try,” Si Xu said, patting the roc perched on his arm.
The roc’s original size was enormous, but it preferred shrinking itself and perching on him.
Even reduced in size, it was heavy. Si Xu could only be grateful for his arm strength—perhaps trained from years of carrying it.
The green roc circled above the swamp once, then quickly snatched a lotus and returned.
Upon landing, it presented the flower eagerly before Si Xu.
Si Xu accepted it, stroked the roc’s head, and gently praised it for a job well done.
The roc instantly seemed pumped up and shot off again, soon returning with another lotus.
Wow, Si Xu’s Heaven-Covering Roc is hilarious. It feels so dog-like—like a husky.
The three beside him were puzzled.
They could sense the “dog-like” part—but what was a husky?
And Si Xu’s roc was a Heaven-Covering Roc? That couldn’t be right.
Legend had it that the Heaven-Covering Roc possessed traces of Kunpeng bloodline—considered a mid-tier top-grade beast and extremely rare.
Si Xu and Lu Taiping both believed top-tier beasts only existed in legends—unreachable.
Lu Taiping refused to believe a top-tier beast could act this dog-like.
Si Xu couldn’t believe he had contracted a top-tier beast.
As for Yu Beixuan, he had already sensed that both their soul pets were extraordinary, so he wasn’t surprised at all.
The roc harvested quickly. Soon it had gathered eight lotuses—just two short of completing both tasks.
But at that moment, as it grabbed another lotus, a Giant-Toothed Crocodile burst from the mud, jaws wide open, snapping toward it.
Si Xu was terrified and shouted, “Qingfeng, come back!”
Si Er was startled too—but had no idea how to help.
All three of his soul pets were land-based. In this situation, they seemed useless.
[Er’er, don’t be afraid. Cuicui can do it.]
[Cuicui? It’s just a mushroom!]
[It can. Cuicui has good mushroom affinity.]
[What does that even mean? Are other mushrooms going to jump out and help?]
Just as he thought that, the green mushroom on his head suddenly leapt into the center of the swamp.
Just before the crocodile could bite down on the roc, the mushroom smashed violently into the crocodile’s forehead, knocking it dizzy.
The roc seized the opportunity to flee—dropping the lotus halfway.
It couldn’t be helped.
The lotus was strange. Though it grew in swamp mud, if its petals so much as touched the mud, it would instantly wither.
