Chapter 115
After the car returned to their residential area, Zhang Su reluctantly compensated Luo Xun and Yan Fei with one meal voucher. Although the damage he caused at the table was far more than what a single voucher could make up for, this thing was precious to everyone. The fact that Zhang Su was willing to give up one was already considered quite generous.
Li Tie and the others were still waiting at home for good news. The three of them bickered and mocked each other as they climbed the stairs.
After they left, when people went around the tables, they realized—the legendary powerful wind-type ability user… had disappeared.
Although Luo Xun and Yan Fei had also left early, aside from those who knew them or those who had carefully counted the metal ability squad members, no one really noticed. Zhang Su’s early departure, however, left quite a few people disappointed, unable to get over it.
Early the next morning, Yan Gexin summoned his trusted subordinate to investigate Liu Xiangyu’s recent activities. In fact, there was no need for deep investigation—just asking around would reveal the “reputation” she had built in the hospital. A thick stack of examination reports and recent case records was placed on Yan Gexin’s desk with a loud thud.
Yan Gexin sucked in a breath and pointed at the pile with wide eyes. “Th-this… all of this is her medical record since arriving at the base?!”
The subordinate lowered his head, suppressing a smile, and nodded. “These are copies of all her examination reports since she arrived. As for her full medical records, those should still be in her possession—we haven’t obtained copies yet.”
Yan Gexin waved his hand impatiently. “Just find me the reports from the last one or two months… The base won’t even cut down a tree, yet she wastes so much paper on all these pointless tests every day?!”
How much paper Liu Xiangyu had wasted, the subordinate didn’t know. But these copies had only been made because his superior suddenly asked for them today—so technically, his superior had also contributed to the waste.
A few selected reports were placed in front of Yan Gexin. When he saw the results, he felt a sharp pain in his ribs from anger. The four bold words “confirmed pregnancy” glared up at him like four loud slaps across his face.
Knowing his wife had an affair and no feelings for him was one thing. Actually seeing such humiliating “evidence” was another.
Their marriage, like many others formed through benefit alliances, had little emotional foundation. Before the apocalypse, they had only been together to produce heirs, living separate lives otherwise. Yet unlike completely loveless couples, they had once had some goodwill between them. In the first half year after marriage, their relationship had been decent. Neither had lovers before marriage, and during the honeymoon period, they had even thought of spending their lives together—it was better than those “model couples” who only maintained appearances.
Unfortunately, after Liu Xiangyu became pregnant, her temperament changed drastically. The mutual tolerance, understanding, and effort to present their best sides all disappeared. After several arguments, it was as if they had torn off each other’s masks—no sweetness, no feelings remained.
So they quickly returned to a “normal” arrangement—maintaining only the basic marital relationship. The child was raised by a nanny, each had their own lovers, and they only appeared together when necessary to maintain the illusion of a family.
But this arrangement had its price. While they could be with others, they absolutely could not have children outside the marriage, nor could they divorce. Yet less than a year into the apocalypse, she had already gotten pregnant.
Looking at the report, Yan Gexin let out a cold laugh and stood up. To the subordinate waiting outside, he said, “Let’s go—to the family quarters.”
Sometimes, maintaining “face” depended on whether the other party cooperated. Given Liu Xiangyu’s current state of mind, Yan Gexin knew that once everything was laid bare, it would be impossible to part peacefully.
Even so, when he confronted her and presented the evidence, her explosive temper, chaotic behavior, and thunderous voice turned the entire family quarters into a spectacle. Almost everyone could hear the commotion from their homes, and countless people came out to watch.
As for the man she had been involved with, the one who lived with her—he never showed his face from start to finish.
Completely losing face, Yan Gexin flew into a rage. He ordered her belongings thrown out of the military quarters and immediately went to process the divorce.
With such solid evidence of infidelity, and with their marriage already known to be a façade, plus no one from Liu’s family stepping in to support her, and Yan Gexin still holding some power—the divorce was finalized in less than an hour. The most time-consuming part was actually removing Liu Xiangyu from the residence.
Yan Gexin had wanted to handle this quietly, but he simply didn’t have capable subordinates. The only person working under him was an ordinary man without abilities. Even if he wanted to silence Liu Xiangyu and dump her outside the base in the middle of the night, he didn’t have the manpower.
Yan Fei knew nothing of this. That morning, when he reported in, Yan Gexin was still reading the reports. By the time Yan Gexin took action, they had already gone out with a convoy to reinforce the outer wall.
On the way, Captain Guo was shrouded in a gloomy aura, as if possessed by some lingering spirit.
“What… happened to him?” Luo Xun knew it was a bit shameless that they had slipped away early yesterday, so he didn’t dare ask directly. Instead, he quietly pulled the deputy captain aside.
The deputy captain glanced at Captain Guo and whispered, “Last night, after you left, that young lady… stared at Captain Guo for ages like they were having a staring contest. Then her father came, and she actually…” His expression twisted. “She grabbed Captain Guo’s arm and said, ‘Even if mountains crumble and heaven and earth unite, only then would I part from you.’”
…
“And… what was her father’s reaction?”
The deputy captain struggled to suppress laughter, clutching his chest as he trembled. “He… Commander Zhu probably knows his daughter’s temperament well. His face didn’t look good, but he just took her away. Though before leaving, he gave Captain Guo a glare.”
Would Captain Guo get demoted? Targeted? Or even sent out of the base as cannon fodder?
Luo Xun’s face twisted. He cast a deeply sympathetic look at Captain Guo. This whole mess had been caused by Zhang Su—should he just sell him out to help Captain Guo vent? After all, Captain Guo had treated them quite well. If it were someone else leading, who knew how much trouble they’d have faced as outsiders?
Captain Guo didn’t need comfort. Somehow he had gotten hold of a bag of tobacco leaves. After the team reached the city wall, he found a corner and smoked for most of the day. When he came back, his mood had clearly improved—unhealthy or not, it helped relieve stress.
Seeing this, Luo Xun even started wondering if he should find some seeds and try growing tobacco at home to sell.
By three in the afternoon, everyone packed up and prepared to leave the wall. Before going down, a few people casually glanced outside. In the distance, scattered zombies were still slowly approaching. With so many people gathered in the base, the scent alone was like a feast to them—just like how, if someone cooked meat in the base, the aroma would draw people in, eager to find the source and grab a share.
Since the siege, the number of zombies around the base had returned to normal—not especially many, but not particularly few either.
Captain Guo came up to urge everyone to leave. Seeing two soldiers still leaning over the wall, he kicked each of them. “What are you looking at? Are you leaving or not?”
One soldier rubbed his backside and pointed to the moat. “Captain, I think we just saw fish in the water!”
“Fish? Where?” Captain Guo leaned over to look. The moat was quite far below—if they were just tiny fry, how could they see them?
After staring for a long time, even borrowing binoculars, he found nothing. He smacked both of them on the head. “Was it just a rock splashing? Didn’t they just refill this moat recently? How could there already be big fish?”
The two soldiers shrank back, not daring to argue. They had only seen some ripples and thought it might be fish.
After the previous battle, who knew how many zombie corpses had soaked in that moat. For safety, the base had drained the water completely, cleared out all the zombies, and then refilled it from a nearby river. Maybe some fish fry had come in—but from this distance, who could see them?
By then, Luo Xun and Yan Fei had already climbed into the truck, waiting for the others. Once everyone boarded, the vehicle started moving again. Nearing the camp, Luo Xun suddenly heard a ringtone from his backpack.
He pulled out the phone and handed it to Yan Fei. “Yours.”
They rarely received calls—most communication was done through messages. Calls were usually only for urgent matters.
It was an unfamiliar number. Yan Fei glanced at the screen, one eyebrow lifting slightly. After a brief pause—He hung up.
