Chapter 29: Caught in the Act
When Cheng Cheng heard that Mo Xiu had finally agreed to let Xie Wu join them, he was so excited he nearly jumped up.
Maybe it was just fate between people—Cheng Cheng simply felt that Xie Wu was especially pleasing to his eyes. Just as he was halfway through jumping, Mo Xiu pressed him back down.
“I know you’re happy, but don’t get excited yet.”
Mo Xiu said this because although Cheng Cheng was the kind of person who got wildly excited on his own, they were currently doing something that couldn’t be seen in the open.
Even if they weren’t afraid of being seen holding shovels and coming to such a deserted and barren place—which would already look strange—the spot beside them was where they had just buried a body. Dancing on top of a grave didn’t feel very auspicious.
After returning near the RV, Mo Xiu checked the surroundings again to create the illusion that Xie Wu had never come back today.
He didn’t let Xie Wu drive the RV back near their apartment. Instead, the three of them chose to walk back.
With Mo Xiu’s wind-type ability helping them, they moved very quickly. Still, the fact that they didn’t encounter anyone along the way made Cheng Cheng sigh that their luck was really good.
What the three of them didn’t know was that their not running into anyone wasn’t entirely due to luck. A strand of divine consciousness had been escorting them the entire time.
Divine consciousness had many uses. It wasn’t just for reconnaissance—it could also block perception and even plant subtle suggestions in people’s minds. Although Mo Qi’s people never appeared, they had essentially been busy helping them for half the night.
When they arrived at the doors of the two apartment units, Mo Xiu barely hesitated before telling Xie Wu to go with Cheng Cheng.
Although Mo Xiu and Mo Qi actually had an extra empty room in their apartment—even though the two of them still shared one room after arriving at the base—Mo Xiu remembered that Mo Qi had been unhappy when Bian Tai brought people over earlier.
Mo Xiu didn’t want Mo Qi to misunderstand and think he didn’t care about his feelings because of Xie Wu.
More importantly, he didn’t like anyone disturbing the time he spent alone with Mo Qi. Only when the two of them were together did he feel the most relaxed and comfortable.
Cheng Cheng, on the other hand, didn’t think that far. He also didn’t know that Mo Xiu and Mo Qi still shared a room despite having two rooms in the apartment. He enthusiastically invited Xie Wu in.
Cheng Cheng had grown up in an orphanage. When he was young, many children slept together in one room. Later, when he got older and worked outside, he lived in crowded worker dormitories.
Now that he had a room to himself, he actually felt a little lonely.
“Brother Xie, come stay with me. Our apartment is really spacious. Especially my bedroom—the bed is two meters by two meters, super big. The two of us can definitely sleep there!”
Xie Wu smiled and nodded. After thanking Mo Xiu, he followed Cheng Cheng away.
Left alone at the door of his room, the young man hesitated for a moment instead of going in immediately.
For some reason, just thinking about bringing Xie Wu back tonight made him feel inexplicably guilty.
But he had left quietly, so Mo Qi should still be asleep. He could explain everything tomorrow morning. Mo Qi was such a good person—he would probably understand his decision.
Of course, if he didn’t understand… then he could just give Xie Wu some benefits and let him leave after things calmed down.
Thinking this, Mo Xiu opened the door. But instead of the person who should have been peacefully asleep in the room, he found Mo Qi sitting quietly on the sofa in the living room.
When Mo Xiu entered, the man turned his head and looked at him silently.
The feeling of guilt became even stronger. Mo Xiu suddenly felt like a cheating husband who had just returned home after meeting a lover, only to be caught by his partner.
He knew the comparison was ridiculous, but the feeling was real.
After coughing awkwardly, Mo Xiu asked, “It’s so late. Why are you up? Did you have a nightmare and couldn’t sleep?”
Mo Qi raised an eyebrow and simply folded his arms, silently staring at Mo Xiu without saying a word.
That attitude made Mo Xiu feel uneasy. After hesitating for a few seconds, he decided to confess.
He walked over, sat beside the man, and said, “Mo Qi, I went out just now to deal with something.”
Seeing the other person nod slightly, finally reacting, Mo Xiu continued.
“I went to kill Bian Tai. I also rescued Xie Wu and Cheng Cheng while I was there. Actually, here’s what happened…”
He explained the whole situation from beginning to end. Mo Xiu had no intention of hiding anything from Mo Qi. Of everything that happened tonight, the only thing he worried about was bringing Xie Wu back.
“I was afraid you’d overthink things and worry about something that wasn’t worth it, so I didn’t tell you. I waited until you were asleep before leaving. I didn’t expect you to wake up anyway.
“And about Xie Wu—I know you don’t like him. If you’re unhappy, I’ll have him leave.”
Mo Xiu looked at Mo Qi a little ingratiatingly and squeezed his palm.
Mo Qi sighed softly.
“I understand.”
Of course he knew Mo Xiu hadn’t hidden it intentionally. Still, he couldn’t help worrying.
He just felt that if he knew in advance that Mo Xiu was going to do something dangerous, he could prepare himself. Even if he couldn’t act directly right now, he could still watch over him with divine consciousness.
Although both times Mo Xiu went out he had noticed beforehand and secretly protected him, what if one day he didn’t notice?
“I know you’re doing it for my sake. But I still hope that if something like this happens again, you’ll tell me. Or do you think I can’t help you… that I’m useless?”
As he spoke, Mo Qi stared intently at Mo Xiu’s face. He knew Mo Xiu had a soft heart, and he deliberately let a hint of grievance show in his eyes.
Sure enough, Mo Xiu immediately shook his head vigorously.
“How could that be? How could I ever think you’re useless! Don’t think nonsense. Just having you by my side is my greatest support!”
Mo Xiu gripped the man’s hand tightly, hoping to convey his feelings.
Mo Qi was the most important person in the world to him. If Mo Qi wasn’t important, what meaning would his rebirth even have?
Mo Xiu was certain that if Mo Qi hadn’t been here, once he killed all the people who had harmed him in the past, he might have lost the goal of continuing to live in this apocalypse.
But because Mo Qi was here, even this battered and broken world still had someone he cared about. Living on still had something to look forward to.
“Then why don’t you tell me each time? You have to promise to tell me in advance next time. Only then will I believe you.”
The man looked at him expectantly, as if he wouldn’t give up until Mo Xiu agreed.
Faced with such a gaze, how could Mo Xiu refuse? After a brief hesitation, he nodded.
Only then was the other person satisfied.
“I knew you treat me the best!”
Mo Qi hugged him and buried his head in Mo Xiu’s shoulder, breathing deeply the pleasant scent on the young man.
Mo Xiu was already used to this clingy behavior. He instinctively hugged him back and gently patted the man’s back, enjoying the warmth and peace of the moment.
After holding each other for a while, Mo Xiu said softly, “Don’t say those ridiculous things again. Believe me—you’re the most important person to me. It’s still early. It’s dark outside. Let’s go back and sleep a little more.”
Mo Qi felt warmth fill his heart. Without another word, he pulled Mo Xiu back into the bedroom.
Mo Xiu was right—it was still early. Since Mo Qi was going to rest, Mo Xiu should rest properly too.
Mo Xiu watched as Mo Qi unusually put on his coat quickly, smiling as he cooperated. Soon he had stripped down to just a tank top and shorts.
The moment he lay down, the person beside him hugged him.
A warm kiss fell on his forehead.
Hearing the quiet “Good night,” the corners of Mo Xiu’s lips lifted uncontrollably.
The warmth and familiar scent of the person beside him made him feel completely at ease. Before he knew it, he had fallen asleep.
That night, Mo Xiu slept very deeply. The next morning, the sun was already high when Cheng Cheng finished making breakfast and knocked on the door several times before Mo Xiu finally woke up.
When he opened the door, Cheng Cheng and Xie Wu were standing outside. The opposite room’s door was open, and the smell of food drifted out from inside.
Then Cheng Cheng’s somewhat noisy voice rang out.
“Brother Mo, you’re finally awake! Today’s breakfast was helped by Brother Xie—he and Xiao Wan made it together. It’s really abundant! You and the boss should come eat quickly! I’m practically drooling!”
“Clearly you really are drooling.”
Mo Qi rubbed his head and walked out from inside, wearing loose pajamas.
He casually wrapped one arm around Mo Xiu’s shoulder and yawned without much regard for his image.
“Smells pretty good. Let’s go.”
After saying that, he took Mo Xiu’s hand.
Although Mo Qi often pulled or hugged him, they rarely held hands. For a moment, Mo Xiu felt a bit shy and awkward, but he didn’t pull away.
The man’s palm was broad, and his fingertips were slightly cold.
Mo Xiu instinctively clasped his hand tighter and said worriedly, “Why are your hands so cold? Did you wear too little? Don’t catch a cold.”
After saying that, he hurried back into the room to grab a coat for Mo Qi. Only then did the two of them head next door together.
As they passed by Xie Wu, Mo Qi deliberately glanced at him.
Their eyes met for a brief moment.
Instantly, Xie Wu felt an overwhelming sense of pressure—a primal fear that came from instinct. It was something he had never felt from another human being before.
He quickly lowered his head, avoiding Mo Qi’s gaze.
At that moment, he was almost certain that this man named Mo Qi was nothing like the useless pretty boy Xu Liang and the others had described—someone who relied only on his looks to cling to Mo Xiu.
Having already witnessed Mo Xiu’s abilities and the ruthless way he killed last night, a thought began to form in Xie Wu’s mind.
The man standing before him now might actually be even stronger… and far more terrifying than Mo Xiu.
