Chapter 20: The Mobile Fruit Stand
Even now, Zhuang Mingde didn’t think he had done anything wrong. In his opinion, he had simply been tired and taken a quick nap. Who would have thought the man would be so troublesome and disappear in the blink of an eye?
But no matter how unwilling he was to admit fault, he was still afraid. If anything really happened to Mo Qi, Mo Xiu would definitely never let him go.
Thinking of Xi Wenlin’s fate, Zhuang Mingde finally felt a chill of fear.
When he saw Mo Xiu returning with Mo Qi, he immediately went up to greet them in a flattering manner.
However, Mo Xiu ignored him completely and simply led Mo Qi to sit down beside the campfire.
Behind them limped along a punk-looking youth.
“Brother Mo, Brother Qi, dinner’s almost ready,” Lu Pingwan walked over and asked gently. “The chicken will taste better if it stews a little longer. Would you like some soup first to warm up?”
Mo Xiu nodded and took the bowl she handed him, feeding the soup to Mo Qi with a spoon.
Seeing them begin eating, the girl also consciously brought her small bowl and happily drank some soup herself.
After all, things had been like this recently. As long as she worked hard and took initiative, she was allowed to share some of the food.
Not far away, Cheng Cheng limped over step by step, staring at the steaming pot and swallowing hard.
He opened his mouth, wanting to ask if he could have a little hot soup too—but then felt that would be too shameless.
Someone had saved him, and he had almost nothing to repay them with. If he even tried to mooch food now, how could he still become the strongest king of the apocalypse in the future?
So Cheng Cheng sat at the edge, staring enviously, not daring to say a word.
Fortunately, Mo Xiu noticed his awkward situation.
Mainly because the sound of his stomach growling was so loud that it was impossible to ignore.
Cheng Cheng awkwardly rubbed his stomach and smiled sheepishly.
Mo Xiu gestured to Lu Pingwan. The girl immediately understood and brought over a bowl of soup with a big piece of meat.
“Thank you! Thank you!” Cheng Cheng said repeatedly.
After taking a sip of the hot broth—and biting into a large chunk of chicken—he nearly burst into tears again.
Seeing this, Mo Xiu’s eyelids twitched.
The future plant-type powerhouse… is actually such a crybaby?
Mo Xiu had hunted two rabbits and a wild chicken earlier. They were quite plump, probably because fewer people had been around recently to hunt them.
Once the rabbits were roasted, Mo Xiu started distributing the meat.
Naturally, he and Mo Qi took the best portions, but Lu Pingwan and Cheng Cheng also received some.
Since Cheng Cheng had just joined, he only received a roasted rabbit head and a stripped bone rack.
But he was still extremely satisfied. The rabbit had only been sprinkled with a little salt, yet it was incredibly fragrant—far better than anything he had eaten in the past two days.
After eating some rabbit meat and drinking a bowl of soup, Cheng Cheng regained some strength.
He even took the initiative to grow two small potatoes, cut them into pieces, and threw them into the pot to cook.
Seeing that the soup looked good, Mo Xiu added some dried noodles, turning it into noodle soup.
The rich aroma of meat made everyone else in the camp drool.
But none of them—including Zhuang Mingde—dared to come over. All they could do was smell it from afar.
This meal left Mo Qi particularly satisfied.
He unconsciously rubbed his round belly, thinking that if he could eat like this for several days in a row, life would be perfect.
Seeing this, Mo Xiu leaned closer and started rubbing his stomach for him.
“If you like it,” he said with a smile, “I’ll hunt more game whenever I get the chance.”
Mo Qi was deeply moved.
What kind of heavenly meal ticket is this?
If he hadn’t known he was a demonic cultivator in his previous life, he might have suspected he had accumulated great merit—otherwise how could he be so lucky that this person had taken the initiative to pick him up?
After the two big brothers finished eating, Cheng Cheng stared straight at the remaining soup and noodles in the pot.
He exchanged a glance with Lu Pingwan.
The two silently split the leftovers half and half.
Together, the four of them finished every last bit of the two rabbits and the food in the pot.
Cleaning up and washing the pot afterward was all done by Lu Pingwan.
Cheng Cheng scratched his head and stood awkwardly nearby.
He wanted to help, but his injured leg made it difficult, and he didn’t even know what work he could do.
Seeing his nervous expression, the girl comforted him gently.
“It’s okay. You’re still injured. I’ll handle these small tasks.”
Cheng Cheng nodded with a flushed face.
He looked around the camp.
There were quite a lot of people in the team, but none of them had dared to come over earlier while they were eating.
It became immediately clear to him.
These two men he had met were definitely the leaders of the group.
Realizing this, Cheng Cheng became even more determined to follow them.
After eating their fill and seeing that it was getting late, Mo Xiu brought Mo Qi back to the off-road vehicle.
But just after they got inside, they heard movement behind them.
Turning around, they saw that Cheng Cheng had followed them.
Since he had just joined the team, he indeed needed to be arranged somewhere.
Mo Xiu pointed toward Lu Pingwan.
“Follow her.”
Then he took out two cans of luncheon meat from the car and asked Cheng Cheng to deliver them to her. He also tossed him a box of medicine before closing the door.
Now the off-road vehicle contained only Mo Xiu and Mo Qi.
Mo Xiu reclined the seat so the man beside him could lie comfortably and covered him with a blanket.
Then he lay down next to him and quietly watched Mo Qi’s face.
“What’s wrong? Can’t sleep?” Mo Qi asked, turning to look at him.
Mo Xiu hesitated for a moment before taking his hand.
“Next time… don’t make me worry like that again, okay?”
Hearing this, Mo Qi realized that wandering into the forest alone earlier without saying anything had indeed been inappropriate.
For many years he had always been alone.
Even though he had been with Mo Xiu recently, he still hadn’t developed the habit of informing someone before doing things.
He had made the person beside him worry. That was his fault.
“Sorry. If something comes up in the future, I’ll tell you beforehand.”
Mo Qi had never been someone who made excuses.
If he was wrong, he admitted it. He apologized, learned from it, and would remember to correct it next time.
Most importantly—Mo Xiu was someone worth caring about.
As he spoke, Mo Qi held Mo Xiu’s hand.
These days he was used to holding him while cultivating at night.
Although it wasn’t convenient to hug in the car tonight, holding hands was good enough.
Mo Xiu wasn’t surprised at all by the gesture.
Seeing how easily Mo Qi acknowledged the problem, he nodded and didn’t press the matter further.
He tucked the blanket around him naturally, and the two closed their eyes together.
When they woke up the next morning, breakfast had already been prepared.
Cheng Cheng seemed much better. Early in the morning he had grown some cabbage and potatoes, which were thrown into the pot to cook.
Since Lu Pingwan had received two cans of luncheon meat yesterday, she was still smiling widely.
So she contributed some of her own dried noodles to help prepare breakfast.
Soon cabbage and potato noodles were ready.
In the apocalypse, such hot and fragrant food was already an excellent breakfast.
Cheng Cheng had slept in a place Lu Pingwan found for him last night.
To thank her, he had grown several small fruits in the morning and gave them to her.
However, after all that work, his ability was once again completely exhausted.
A few days later, Cheng Cheng’s leg injury fully healed.
He had only sprained it while escaping. Young people recovered quickly, and ability users had even stronger physiques.
After applying ointment daily, he was already bouncing around again in no time.
Once he recovered, he began following Mo Qi everywhere, constantly calling him “Boss,” trying to take over every odd job.
This left the others in the team confused.
If someone wanted to curry favor, shouldn’t the target be Mo Xiu, the leader?
Did this punk kid have something wrong with his brain?
But soon they realized something strange.
Ever since Zhuang Mingde had been careless that day, he had fallen out of favor.
By flattering Mo Qi, Cheng Cheng had replaced Zhuang Mingde’s original position.
Who would have thought this seemingly brainless punk kid could climb the ranks so quickly?
Zhuang Mingde was furious.
But no matter how unbalanced he felt, there was nothing he could do except regret his earlier laziness.
At first he hadn’t thought the benefits he received from Mo Xiu were important.
But now, watching someone else enjoy all the good food and treatment that used to be his, the bitterness was unbearable.
Yet no matter how greedy he felt, he had no powers and wasn’t even among the strongest physically.
All he could do was watch.
Two days later, they finally arrived at a fairly large town.
The first thing Mo Xiu did was lead everyone to a large supermarket.
Besides collecting supplies, they specifically searched for vegetable and fruit seeds for Cheng Cheng.
After all, the guniang fruit had already run out after the second day.
Since then, their meals had been nothing but cabbage and potatoes.
Although potatoes could be endlessly multiplied by planting pieces of them, eating the same thing every day was still monotonous.
Fortunately, after searching the supermarket and killing more than a dozen zombies, their efforts weren’t wasted.
The section selling flower and seed packets had barely been touched.
Seeing this, Cheng Cheng rushed over excitedly and gathered every edible seed he could find.
When he found strawberry seeds, he immediately grew more than a dozen strawberries and distributed them to Mo Xiu, Mo Qi, and Lu Pingwan.
Mo Xiu never expected that in the apocalypse he would be eating fresh, large, sweet strawberries so soon.
Beside him, Mo Qi tasted one and happily narrowed his eyes.
At that moment he deeply felt that keeping this rainbow-haired kid had been an absolutely correct decision.
