Chapter 8: Raw Jade Stones
Chu Feng had spent a few days learning the language from Illya. He expressed his hope to find some local specialties from this world to take back and sell elsewhere—only then would he have enough money to bring back even more useful items.
Illya nodded in understanding but replied helplessly that there wasn’t much of value here—it would be hard to trade for the kinds of treasures Chu Feng had brought with him.
Compared to Chu Feng’s items, everything here seemed practically worthless.
Chu Feng thought to himself, Illya really has no eye for value. How could there be nothing valuable here?
That tiger skin outside alone was worth a lot! Tigers symbolize power and status—many nouveau riche on Earth, once they get money, dream of owning a tiger skin to live out their “jungle king” fantasy.
A regular tiger pelt could easily fetch five to six hundred thousand yuan with the right buyer. But tigers are a protected species in China—if anyone found out, he’d end up in jail. The risk was far too high.
Chu Feng had considered the tiger skin last time. After returning, he’d searched online and came across a news article by accident.
Someone had bought a tiger skin online for 20,000 yuan and found a buyer willing to pay 550,000. But the police caught wind of it, and that person was now probably serving a life sentence.
Getting jailed would be the least of his problems—if someone realized that the tiger species he was selling didn’t exist on Earth, things could get much worse. Not just prison—he might end up in a lab, dissected for research. That was not how Chu Feng wanted to go out.
The wood outside might also be valuable, but it wasn’t easy to find buyers, and it would be difficult to transport. If he got traced, he couldn’t explain the source.
Chu Feng took out his phone and powered it on.
The light startled Illya at first, but he quickly calmed down.
Chu Feng had come prepared this time.
“Do you have this?” Chu Feng showed Illya some pictures of gold. Gold is a universal currency and relatively easy to sell.
Illya leaned in for a look and said that this place did have it, but it was rare and mostly controlled by the nobility. Still, if Chu Feng had enough salt, it might be possible to trade for some.
Hearing that, Chu Feng nearly wanted to rush back and haul over a whole crate of salt.
It’s just salt! One yuan a bag—not a big deal at all.
He looked at the lightning mark on his wrist and sighed. It seemed to be fading even more slowly than last time. He might have to stay in this world longer now, so bringing over more salt would have to wait.
Although a bit disappointed, Chu Feng quickly adjusted his mindset.
He flipped through a few more pictures and showed Illya silver. This world also had silver—Illya even had a few silver coins himself. But like gold, silver was hard currency and not easy to obtain.
Still, Illya said if Chu Feng sold his goods to the nobles, he could probably get a decent amount of silver.
Chu Feng shook his head. He didn’t understand this world well enough yet and didn’t want to deal with the elite just yet.
“What about this?” Chu Feng showed him some pictures of jade.
Illya replied that they had that too—by the lakeside.
Chu Feng got excited and told Illya he wanted to take a look. Illya hesitated a bit but eventually nodded.
Fully geared up with his stun baton, Chu Feng followed them outside. Duoduo and Gray came along too.
The two kids hopped along energetically, and Chu Feng followed behind, realizing just how slow his own pace was.
After walking for over half an hour, they finally arrived.
Chu Feng saw raw jade stones scattered along the lakeside and trembled with excitement.
He didn’t know much about jade, but as the saying goes, “Gold has a price, jade is priceless.” Some people were willing to spend a fortune on good jade, while others didn’t care for it at all. Even so, high-quality jade was never cheap.
Looking at the translucent stones by the lake, Chu Feng was sure they could fetch a decent price.
He took off his backpack and began picking out some stones to put inside. Illya noticed and came over to help.
Gray looked enviously at Chu Feng’s backpack.
He had been eyeing it for a while. But since Chu Feng had promised to bring one suitable for him next time, Gray resisted the urge to snatch it.
Seeing Chu Feng use the backpack for stones, Gray couldn’t help but feel distressed.
He finally blurted out, “Such a waste.”
Chu Feng turned to look at him, puzzled. “What?”
Gray pointed to the bag. “This backpack is so precious—how could you use it for dirty old rocks?”
Chu Feng blinked innocently. This bag really isn’t that valuable—less than 100 yuan. But one of these rocks? If he picks the right one, it could be worth hundreds of thousands, maybe even a million!
